NEW GOVERNMENT TERRORISM DATA EXCLUSIVELY ON TKB.ORG

The National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) is the primary center for US government analysis of terrorism. NCTC releases its terrorism incident data exclusively through TKB.org. Since July, TKB users could analyze all government incident data for 2004. Now, NCTC has begun releasing its 2005 terrorism incident data via TKB.org. TKB users can now access new NCTC incident data through March 31, 2005, as well as all data for 2004. The NCTC Worldwide Incidents Tracking System (WITS) dataset is available at http://www.tkb.org/NCTCAdvancedSearch.jsp.

The National Counterterrorism Center will be releasing subsequent incident data for 2005 on a per quarter basis. Stay tuned for the next release of additional 2005 NCTC data on TKB.org after January.

NCTC DATA PORTAL TO BE RELEASED IN JANUARY 2006

In more exciting news, NCTC and TKB will release a brand-new component of the TKB portal focusing exclusively on NCTC data. The new NCTC data portal will offer additional tools to allow users to graph and chart official federal terrorism data. Users will also be able to conduct advanced searches.

As with data from the RAND Corporation, TKB users will have access to a powerful GIS mapping capability to plot official NCTC incident data in relation to dozens of geographic, political, environmental, and infrastructural characteristics. Watch for the new portal in early January.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES AND ANALYTICAL TOOLS

TKB continuously expands the terrorism data and features freely available on TKB.org.

The TKB team also works to add new and innovative analytical tools, often based on recommendations by TKB users like you. As one new feature, TKB has compiled and centralized data methodologies for all of its terrorism datasets. The TKB team hopes that the updated and expanded methodologies will assist researchers as they explore the multiple datasets housed within the TKB system. Researchers are encouraged to review the data methodologies, located at http://www.tkb.org/Methodologies.jsp.

In terms of new analytical tools, TKB now offers a Statistical Incident Report by Group Classification.

This new feature is available through the analytical tools section at http://www.tkb.org/AnalyticalTools.jsp.

If there are additional tools you would like to see on TKB.org, please let us know.

HAVE YOU SEEN ME?

With all of the evolving features and tools available within the TKB system, it is easy to overlook some of them. The TKB team would like to call your attention to some key system features you might have missed. One item we would like to remind you of is the Group Comparison Report. Available in the Group Reports section of the Analytical Tools page, the Group Comparison Report allows users to look at terrorist group statistics side-by-side. This tool offers detailed comparisons between up to four groups at once, and more general comparisons for up to twelve groups. You can access the Group Comparison report directly at http://www.tkb.org/GroupComparisonReport.jsp.

YOUR FEEDBACK MATTERS

We need your help to keep the TKB thriving.

As mentioned above, the TKB team often finds the best ideas for new innovations from users like you. To improve the accuracy of data from NCTC or RAND, we must rely on your collective wisdom and vigilance. Finally, we need to know how you use the TKB to carry out your own professional duties or support your research needs. Without your input and help in spreading the word about TKB, we can’t continue to serve you as you have come to expect. Let us know how you use the TKB to stay prepared and to stay informed. Thank you for your continuing interest in the MIPT Terrorism Knowledge Base.
