This reflection has two parts, both concluded on Saturday, March 22nd

Part I

In this reflection I will go by the news received from different sources, including international cable services, –without specifically recognizing any of them as the information source, but strictly abiding by the text of the news– books, documents, the Internet, and even questions asked to well-documented sources.

There is a big hustle and bustle everywhere, as if we lived in a mad house. Our very well-known characters continue on their hectic tour.

After visiting Brazil and Chile, Condoleezza flew to Moscow to sound out the new President. She wants to know his mind. She traveled with the chief of the Pentagon. With a dislocated arm after a fall on February, he said: “With a broken arm, I won’t be nearly as difficult a negotiator.” A typically Yankee joke. You may figure out the effect this had on the proud ears of a Russian, whose people suffered the loss of so many millions of lives in their struggle against the Nazi hordes which claimed for vital space –what we could call today cheap oil, raw materials, and guaranteed markets for surplus goods.

We have known of the adventures of McCain and Cheney in Baghdad; one of them hopes to become head of government, and the other, being already the deputy head of government, issues more orders than his boss. They were both welcomed with the most unexpected and violent predictions. They devoted less than two days to that, enough time to flood the world with sinister forecasts.

Bush was delivering speeches in Washington while the prices of gold and oil were sky-rocketing.

Cheney didn’t stop. He rushed for the Sultanate of Oman -774,000 oil barrels per day in 2005 and 780,000 in 2004. Last year Oman revealed its plans to invest 10 billion dollars during the next five years to increase its oil production to 900,000 barrels per day and reach the figure of 70 to 80 million cubic meters of gas per day. This is what the Sultanate authorities reported on January 15, 2007.

Cheney, accompanied by his family, sailed on board of the Sultan’s yacht “Kingfish I” on a fishing tour nearby the maritime boundaries between Oman and Iran. How bold! Nobel awards should also be given to those super-brave who run the risk of death or mutilation after a sumptuous private lunch with a fishbone stuck in the throat. The absence of the owner of the luxurious yacht spoiled the hero’s party.

McCain doesn’t stop either. He jumps into a helicopter to move around the territory where the Israeli soldiers, while chasing Palestinian leaders, continue to kill women, children, teenagers and youth in the West Bank with the use of sophisticated technical means. The Republican candidate is an expert on that.

He traveled to Jerusalem and there he promised to be the first to recognize that whole city as the capital of Israel, which the United States and Europe turned into a sophisticated nuclear power, whose satellite-guided missiles could fall in Moscow, more than 5000 kilometers away, in a matter of minutes.

There will be no oil or gas producing State that Cheney would not visit before he returns to attest to the happiness of the world before the President of his country.

Bush, for one, speaks on the 17th for one reason, then on the 18th for another reason, and on the 19th to mark the beginning of his fantastic war. Cuba, as it was to be expected, has not ceased to be at the crosshairs of his invectives.

In the midst of the chaos created by the empire, wars become inseparable sidekicks. It’s been five years since the beginning of the Iraqi war. Profound thinkers have estimated the amounts of persons who have been affected, and have calculated that this war’s total cost amounts to trillions of dollars. Four thousand army soldiers have lost their lives; for every soldier that is killed thirty more are wounded due to the kind of war that is being waged. White phosphorous and cluster bombs are the feed that nurtures this war on a daily basis. Anything goes, except for living.

Cheney and McCain compete with one another, one of them as the father of the creature, the other as the stepfather. They both meet with heads of State and exact compromises: oil and gas production should be increased, with the use of Yankee technology, Yankee inputs, and Yankee weapons from the industrial military complex. Yankee military bases should be allowed.

From Jerusalem, McCain jumps into London to talk with Gordon Brown. Before that, while speaking in Jordan, he made a mistake and asserted that Iran, a Shiite country, was helping to train Al Qaeda, a Sunnite organization. It’s all the same to him; he didn’t even apologize for his mistake.

Cheney jumps into Afghanistan. The war waged by NATO and the Yankees has turned the country into the largest opium exporter of the world. The USSR had worn itself out and plunged into a similar war. Bush launched his first belligerent blow there, supported by NATO.

They are doing all that needs to be done to convene two parallel meetings: one to discuss the fight on terrorism and a NATO meeting.

One thing is certain: Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General, and Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, NATO’s top official, will meet with Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan on April 1, 2 and 3 in Bucharest to participate in the Trans-Atlantic Forum to be held in that city. At the same time there will be a conference convened by the GMF (the German Marshall Fund of the United States), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, and Chatham House which will gather a great number of strategists and politicians to address topics of vital interest for NATO. According to the GMF Chairman, the conference will be attended by 9 Heads of State, 24 Prime Ministers and ministers, and 40 presidents of research institutions from Europe and the Americas, which make up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) which dissolved Tito’s Yugoslavia and carried out the war in Kosovo. Anyone could understand that any similarity with the interests pursued by the Yankee imperialism is a mere coincidence. The situation in the Balkans, the anti-missile defense system, the energy supply and weapons control are unavoidable issues.

Since Bush needs to perform his main character role, he has already drafted his own schedule: he would be in the city of Neptun, in the Black Sea, to attend a meeting with Traian Basescu, President of Romania, on the eve of the opening of the conference. The fate of humankind which contributes surplus value and blood, are in those hands.

Chavez offers "oil for food"

Venezuela's president has offered Caribbean and Central American nations the option to pay for oil supplies with local products, such as bananas and sugar.

Speaking in Cuba at a meeting of Petrocaribe, his regional energy alliance, on Friday, Hugo Chavez also lambasted the US and other rich nations for squandering world resources.

"We have begun to create a new geopolitics of oil that is not at theservice of the interests of imperialism and big capitalists, "

Chavezsaid in his speech.

He dismissed Americans and "Yankees" and pledged Venezuela's oil and gas would "always be at the service" of its "brother nations".

The Petrocaribe alliance, which grew to 17 countries on Friday with the admission of Honduras, has bolstered Chavez's influence in the region since it started in 2005.

But the debt of Petrocaribe members to Venezuela has reached $1.16bn in little more than a year of supplies, and is estimated to rise to$4.6bn by 2010.

Recognising this, Chavez proposed debts be offset with local products and services.

Services for oil

He did not say how local products would be used to pay down debt, but he said it would be the same method used by Cuba, which pays for oil supplies with medical and other services."

We propose adding to the financed portion of the oil bill a method of payment that includes the supply of a series of local products and services, "

he said.

The Petrocaribe deal allows members to defer payment on 40 per cent of their Venezuelan oil bill for up to 25 years, with interest of only 1per cent.

Dan Erikson, from the inter-American dialogue, told Al Jazeera that Petrocaribe had won Chavez friends in the Carribean, but that its impact was relatively small.

"Chavez tends to get much greater defference in the Carribean today than he did in the past, however, the Venezuelan president has various outreached programmes,"

Erikson said.

Outreach

He added that the Carribean states were still often "charting their own course" on the world stage.

"If you look at most of the states engaged with this - aside from Cuba- they tend to be quite small states that relly on a variety of international partners,"

he told Al Jazeera.

The outreach to Venezuela is part of this overall strategy of trying to globalise relations for Carribean states who need all the friends they can get.

Critics say Petrocaribe is increasing the indebtedness of small Caribbean states still reeling from the loss of preferential markets for bananas and sugar in the EU.

While in Cuba, Chavez is also due to open a revamped Soviet-era refinery that will supply diesel, gasoline and jet fuel to members of Petrocaribe. Chavez has helped keep Cuba's battered economy afloat with 92,000 barrels per day of oil that Havana pays for with the medical services of thousands of doctors treating Venezuela's poor.

Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Friday cited a report carried in a Spanish daily as saying leaders of the United States and Britain and Spanish had met for a "plot" to start the 2003 war on Iraq to get rid of its former leader Saddam Hussein.

U.S. President George W. Bush, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar had met for the plot at Portugal's Azores islands on March 16, 2003, three days prior to launching the war on Iraq, he cited Spanish daily El Pais as saying.

The article carried in El Pais narrates how the leaders of the three countries unilaterally decided to launch the aggression, said Castro in his weekly "Reflections" published by local press.

The three men had infringed on the functions of the UN Security Council by so doing, he added.

Castro, 81, temporarily handed over power to his younger brother Raul Castro, Cuba's vice president and defense minister, on July 31 last year, due to an intestinal hemorrhage. He has rarely been seen in public ever since.

Castro’s thoughts on the British Astute

Check out this speech that Fidel Castro gave to the Cuban press providing his thoughts on the newest addition to the British navy - see my post on the Astute. Isn’t he supposed to be recovering in the hospital somewhere? Seems odd that with all that’s going on in the world this is what he chooses to enlighten the masses about.

The press dispatches bring the news; it belongs to the Astute Class, the first of its kind to be constructed in Great Britain in more than two decades.

“A nuclear reactor will allow it to navigate without refuelling during its 25 year of service. Since it makes its own oxigen and drinking water, it can circumnavigate the globe without needing to surface,” was the statement to the BBC by Nigel Ward, head of the shipyards.

Someone says that “it can observe the movements of cruisers in New York Harbor right from the English Channel, drawing close to the coast without being detected and listen to conversations on cell phones”. “In addition, it can transport special troops in mini-subs that, at the same time, will be able to fire lethal Tomahawk missiles for distances of 1,400 miles”, a fourth person declares.

El Mercurio, the Chilean newspaper, emphatically spreads the news.

The UK Royal Navy declares that it will be one of the most advanced in the world. The first of them will be launched on June 8 and will go into service in January of 2009.

It can transport up to 38 Tomahawk cruise missiles and Spearfish torpedoes, capable of destroying a large warship. It will possess a permanent crew of 98 sailors who will even be able to watch movies on giant plasma screens.

“BAE Systems, the armaments manufacturer, will build two other submarines of the same class,” AP reported. The total cost of the three submarines, according to calculations that will certainly be below the mark, is 7.5 billion dollars.

What a feat for the British! The intelligent and tenacious people of that nation will surely not feel any sense of pride. What is most amazing is that with such an amount of money, 75 thousand doctors could be trained to care for 150 million people, assuming that the cost of training a doctor would be one-third of what it costs in the United States. You could build 3 thousand polyclinics, outfitted with sophisticated equipment, ten times what our country possesses.

Cuba is currently training thousands of young people from other countries as medical doctors.

In any remote African village, a Cuban doctor can impart medical knowledge to any youth from the village or from the surrounding municipality who has the equivalent of a grade twelve education, using videos and computers energized by a small solar panel; the youth does not even have to leave his hometown, nor does he need to be contaminated with the consumer habits of a large city.

The important thing is the patients who are suffering from malaria or any other of the typical and unmistakable diseases that the student will be seeing together the doctor.

The method has been tested with surprising results. The knowledge and practical experience accumulated for years have no possible comparison.

The non-lucrative practice of medicine is capable of winning over all noble hearts.

Since the beginning of the Revolution, Cuba has been engaged in training doctors, teachers and other professionals; with a population of less than 12 million inhabitants, today we have more Comprehensive General Medicine specialists than all the doctors in sub-Saharan Africa where the population exceeds 700 million people.

We must bow our heads in awe after reading the news about the English submarine. It teaches us, among other things, about the sophisticated weapons that are needed to maintain the untenable order developed by the United States imperial system.

We cannot forget that for centuries, and until recently, England was called the Queen of the Seas. Today, what remains of that privileged position is merely a fraction of the hegemonic power of her ally and leader, the United States.

Churchill said: Sink the Bismarck! Today Blair says: Sink whatever remains of Great Britain’s prestige!

For that purpose, or for the holocaust of the species, is what his “marvellous submarine” will be good for.
