Now here's a post about NEOCON Robert D. Kaplan !!

This is from In the Wilderness ..

[This is a sharp-eyed look at the madness of a major neocon talking-head regarding China policy. But for perspective-by-analogy, let me ask you a question about Iran. Ever wonder what would have come about in Iran had the Central Intelligence Agency not fomented an illegal coup d'etat against democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh? He moved to nationalize the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, triggering the wrath of the American economic hitmen who engineered his sudden overthrow in 1953. That clever piece of finesse brought the bitter ordeal of the bogus Shah of Iran, his notorious Savak secret police, the 1979 Shiite revolution, and the eventual sabotage of the entire Carter Presidency - which was, let's remember, the last hope for a timely mitigation of Peak Oil. And now they're in something called the Axis of Evil.

The Iranian example is just as relevant for Venezuela, where Uncle Sam recently tried and failed to repeat the trick, as it is for China, where he can't. In every case, guys who haven't read Verse 61 of the Tao Teh Ching take it upon themselves to intervene in other people's affairs in the pursuit of their own short-term advantage. They do so in the name of "realism," because that category acts like a mirror to those who would operate under its cover: my policy reproduces an existing world of scarcity and danger and resentment; by comparison, yours is unrealistic - therefore, I'm the credible adult in charge, and you're the dreamer on the margin.

The Realist's low expectations of others are a mask for his desire for their goods. He wants to raid his neighbors, so he laments aloud that they are such a hostile people, it will be necessary to destroy them. In wrecking the place, the Realist makes the world match his vision of it, then boasts that he was right. --JAH]

China in America's cross-hairs:
Robert D. Kaplan and neocon hawks clamor for new Cold War

June 20, 2005 1100 PST (FTW) The feature story of the June 2005 issue of The Atlantic Monthly is Robert D. Kaplan's "How We Would Fight China: The Next Cold War". This inevitable war, according to Kaplan, "will link China and the United States in a future that may stretch over several generations." By comparison, "the Middle East is just a blip."

Kaplan's provocative China piece, detailed below, coincides with increasingly confrontational rhetoric by the Bush administration, the growing influence of neocon hardliners, growing concern about China within the elite cadres of the New World Order (from the G-7 to the Bilderberg Group), tensions between China and Japan (the US proxy in the region), and more East-West trade bickering (currencies, etc.). In February 2005, new CIA Director Porter Goss issued a warning to China regarding its military modernization. One day later, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld issued a similar warning.

Does the militaristic Kaplan article, afloat upon the growing hostilities between the US and China, mark the beginning of a dangerous new phase of conflict and superpower war?

Who is Robert D. Kaplan?
In a post-9/11 political landscape crawling with warmongering policymakers and military-utopian intelligentsia, Kaplan deserves singling out. It is not Kaplan's wild views, but his influence - the fact that he has the ear of top military and intelligence brass, and enjoys a symbiotic relationship with elites at the highest levels - that is of greater importance.

Kaplan is a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly and the author of nine books on international affairs, including Warrior Politics: Why Leadership Demands a Pagan Ethos, and international travel books with distinctly political biases, such as Balkan Ghosts and Eastward to Tartary.

Fascinated (some would say obsessed) with military/intelligence and war, Kaplan's upcoming book, Imperial Grunts: The American Military on the Ground is one of several books he is writing about the US armed forces.

Kaplan's essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. He has appeared on C-SPAN and CNN. New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman calls Kaplan among the "most widely read" authors defining the post-Cold War (along with Francis Fukuyama and Harvard's Samuel Huntington).

Kaplan is a favorite of both George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. According to U. S. News & World Report, "President Clinton was so impressed with Kaplan, he ordered an interagency study of these issues, and it agreed with Kaplan's conclusions." Kaplan was invited to meet with George W. Bush in the White House - and brief Bush on foreign policy.

Kaplan is also a consultant to the US Army's Special Forces Regiment, the US Air Force, and the US Marines. He has lectured at military war colleges, the CIA, the National Security Agency (NSA), and the FBI. Kaplan has lectured at the State Department. More recently, Kaplan was embedded with US forces during the attack on Fallujah, and has spent considerable time with the US military over the past three years. In other words, Kaplan is a military-intelligence insider.

Kaplan has a reputation for being one of the first American writers to forecast (from as far back as the 1980s) the Clinton-Bush administration wars in the Balkans and Central Asia, and the current 9/11 War (Afghanistan, Iraq).

Another example of NEOCON insensitivity in Canada

Only comments: Nothing could be worse for Canada then these neocons. Rude, brutish, ignorant, arrogant and major ripoff artists themselves.

This minister never worked hard a day in his life; he's just a TAKER.

Tory MP apologizes for 'hurtful' remarks about natives

OTTAWA — A swift apology from the Conservative MP who said native people need to learn the value of hard work more than they need compensation did little to shine the tarnish on his boss's historic outreach a day earlier.

A chastened Pierre Poilievre stood in the House of Commons on Thursday to fully retract remarks which were shocking both for their content and timing.

He drew intense outrage Wednesday with comments on an Ottawa radio show made just hours before Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered a moving apology for generations of racist policy in residential schools.

"Yesterday, on a day when the House and all Canadians were celebrating a new beginning, I made remarks that were hurtful and wrong," he said.

"I accept responsibility for them and I apologize."

Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl switched seats to be next to Poilievre and shook his hand in a show of support that further riled opposition MPs.

In his radio interview, Poilievre questioned the value of residential schools compensation.

"Now, along with this apology, comes another $4 billion in compensation for those who partook in the residential schools over those years," he said.

The Information Warfare against We the People continues

by Virginia Braddock Simson

Each night at midnight, my computer freezes. The spellchecker goes out; the pics don't upload; and I sit in my apartment and imagine the guy who screens my entries getting paid far more than I do. The information warfare against We the People continues.

I am in SURVIVAL mode, same as everyone else, sitting on the edge of my chair since November.

Will there be a false flag operation, before our We the People campaign succeeds ?

Will the earth changes hit the West Coast of the United States before our We the People campaign suceeds?

What will everyone do if martial law is declared?

As the DoD emails have been released due to the excellent work of the EFF Foundation and Scott McClellan's book has come out (and taking that in after seven long years of fighting against torture is no easy task: he simply puts all the torture references on Abu Ghraib into a single paragraph on p. 217) It's a spiritual deflator despite the fact we know that legal teams are toiling away matching the DoD emails to the content of the book. When I flip the pages, my eyes want to dissociate from the information !

It's a shock knowing that after fifteen years of exile, something is about to snap.

Each day I get up and watch the election news on the internet. (Refusing to watch anything on the infowarfare television screen for a very long time .. ) Now that OBAMA has won the nomination, will people finally wake up and see for themselves it's high time he began to LEAD ?

Let's see this CHANGE we have been promised now. He's the LEADER, right ?? How about suggesting that all election machines are scrapped and we have paper ballots. Let's see him come forward (putting down the corporate-paid Remy Martins), face the television cameras and say: Time for impeachment ! Now THAT would be change. Otherwise, we are likely to see him come to power saying: "Time to heal, folks! Here is the elixir - we'll give pardons to the republicans so that the "peace" can be bought."

But we know that this is not going to happen. We the People are going to stand up and say - ENOUGH.

No more torture, no more killing, no more kangaroo courts, no more detainee facilities .. no more threats to United States soldiers. It's time for We the People to say (and that includes Ron Paul and his followers and the Nadar's Raiders) we support these Nuremberg hearings as we love our children.

I still have agents up in Canada crawling all over my person, calling me psychotic, taking my printers away !! My blog cannot be fixed until I figure out how to BEAT the information warfare! It's our fundamental RIGHT to have our information left alone, despite DoD interference ..

http://ladybroadoak.blogspot.com/search?q=information+warfare

America's best commentator is Jon Stewart. Can we all write him and ask him to ask the hard questions about information warfare? Are you filing your complaints as citizens with the International Criminal Court? Now is the time ..

Come to my blog, leave your comments on internet inference ! Let's make history together by showing we still stand up for our rights ! The US and Canada both need to rally round the detainees; it's become so obvious that we must act now ..

(and I volunteer to make the orange jumpsuit to fit Condi Rice !)

The Psychology of Propoganda and Elite Control (excellent)

I don't agree with the first part of this. Jeremiah Wright is being used by the Ford Foundation, as Webster Tarpley points out - to keep people divided when the TIME COMES for more depopulation !!

I do agree with the second part. But I don't think the coup came with 9/11 - I think it came with the computer chips being programmed to STEAL the election. The plan was already in place prior to 2000. The essay is totally on the mark.

Edward Encho is always INTERESTING.

V

Hillary Clinton's win in the WVa primary was not, it seems, a surprise.

MichaelP

But the report of her win was accompanied by press garbage which went
beyond the statement that the results showed her getting 67 percent of the
vote while Obama took 26 percent of the vote. I've not yet found whether
this was an "open primary" - which means I don't know how many of the
voters were republicans , in the sense that I don't know how many of the
67% who voted for Clinton yesterday would vote for McCain in the
presidential election

My sense of press-generated garbage comes from reports like this:

"(Obama) had difficulty attracting white working-class
voters who have flocked to Clinton's side in the past few months.

" Exit polls showed Obama, who would be the first black president,
won support from less than one-quarter of white voters without a
college degree. < http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=4850922>

As I look into the "blue-collar" issue I learn that Int. Herald Tribune
<http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/05/12/america/politicus.php> reports
that if McCain captures " 20 percent of the Democratic blue-collar vote
nationally" he'll win the presidency.

And I'll add that from the press reports the blue-collar vote in WVa is a
white vote, so I'm able to conclude that the primary vote yestarday was
won by a racist majority. And that lets me believe that if the Dem. elite
thinks they can't win an presidential election with a black candidate then
they'll easily ignore the primaries and their own rules by picking Clinton
or some other person as candidate regardless of whether Obama wins the
nomination according to the rules

Hopefully only by concidence, web pages for yesterday and today provided
several pieces on the theme of "coup d'etat" - where the state exercises
power without recourse to legitimate procedures, and I'm asking if the
eventual choice of the next US President is being made by an elite rather
than by the people.

Certainly the view today expressed by Gore Vidal on DemocracyNow!
<http://www.democracynow.org/2008/5/14/legendary_author_gore_vidal_on_the>
is that the coup has already occurred. Vidal leaves open the question of
WHO owns the US; the answer to that one doesn't really matter in deciding
on who will be the next president because the elite is more concerned with
blocking the "wrong" candidate than with endorsing the caandidate who has
jumped succesfully through the hoops.

I'm jumping into the "coup d'etat" thesis largely becase of a character -
Edward Luttwak - who's been around longer than me and who first came to my
attention 50 years ago when he was advising the Brits how to block
insurgency ( freedom movements) in what was then left of the British
Empire. And he wrote a book called "Coup d'Etat" which is decribed below.

Luttwak - and the NYTimes yesterday -- came up with
the thesis that Obama has been a Muslim, and that Muslims are forbidden
from changing religion under pain of being offed -
<http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/12/opinion/12luttwak.html> apostasy has
connotations of rebellion and treason against Islam and is the worst of
all crimes that a Muslim can commit, worse than murder (which the victim's
family may choose to forgive); it leaves the apostate subject to execution
at the hands of any Muslim cleric.

So there's an additional reason being peddled by the media for not having
Obama for president -- not only do the bluecollar whites disfavor
blacks, hence may desert the Obama for McCain, but
also Obama is subject to assassination as the child of a
lapsed Muslim.

Sounds hoky ? but even hoky goes if it may serve the purposes of an elite.

So here please read a couple of relevant pieces:

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PROPAGANDA AND ELITE CONTROL By Harry R. Davidson, Ph.D.

The use of propaganda was historically associated with communist regimes.
{ Not true - propagands was devised by Hitler's colleague Goebbels -= but
he probably learned it from the success of commercial spin (Public
Relations to you) associated with the name of Bernays in the 1920's --
michael)

Today, the attack on Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Senator Obama and the Black
Church demonstrates that Americas propaganda machine is working to
manipulate the masses into accepting the rule of the elitists. The elites
are using psychology, the media and the pseudoscientific of polling to
manipulate and take advantage over an unenlightened citizenry.

Following his speech to the National Press Club, media contrived questions
where fed to Rev. Wright, questions designed to create sound bites for the
propagandists use to demonize Rev. Wright. White folks and Blacks who
adhere to White Supremacy then saturate the public with the thoughts of
the elitists. White Supremacy is employed to establish the parameters of
Black freedom of religion and speech. The racist White Supremacists
maintain the right to control and determine Black thought, to be the
experts on the education of Black children and all things related to Black
people.

Those who seek dominance and control seek to undermine and destroy
organized religion. Elitism has become the new religion. It is one in
which man not only strays from God; but ultimately positions himself as
God. The Churchs opposition to capitalistic colonialism, exploitation,
and expansionism and stands out in history. The power brokers resented the
Churchs authority and proposed the abolition of all religions. They
believed that man and not God should rule man, that the end justifies the
means and that the elite should take any means, moral or immoral, to
achieve their goals. Religion was opposed because religion taught that
only moral means might be used to achieve a moral end.

Secret societies have been formed to create an organization strong enough
to destroy the Church, to free man from religion and to establish elite
dominance over man. These ultimate goals have been passed down through the
ages. Murder, looting, war all become acceptable behavior to the real
believers of this new religion.

The secret societies empowered today are the continuation of the
underlying skullduggery. The historic influence of the secret societies
has been played down as a baseless conspiracy theory. The overthrows of
religious, political and the orders were primary objectives. Abraham
Lincoln is quoted as saying: The money powers prey upon the nation in
times of peace and conspires against it in times of adversity. It is more
despotic than monarchy, more insolent than autocracy more selfish than
bureaucracy. I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves
me, and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. Corporations
have been enthroned, an era of corruption will follow, and the money power
of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the
prejudices of the people, until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands,
and the republic is destroyed.

Lincoln's assassination was the result of his unwillingness to accept the
establishment dictates. The conspirators use artificially created
depressions, recessions, panics and even wars to seize control of the
minds of the masses.

SUBVERTING AND UNDERMINING RELIGION

Religion has historically been a source of organized resistance. All
religions exalt obedience to a power that is higher than man. Hence, the
conspirators need to undermine or subvert the major religions. In an
article titled Mans Upward Reach, New American, December 27, 2004, Dennis
Behreandt suggests that the innate tendency for man to seek domination
over other men is regulated by religion. Hence, the laws of God must
supersede those of the state and the state must not violate the God-given
rights of each individual. According to Behreandt: Freedom itself is an
extension of sound religious principles recognizing the proper
relationship among God, man, and the state; and free societies The author
concludes that there are those who see religion as the foe of progress.

The conspirators see religion as standing in the way of their progress.
Religion as a form of organized resistance must be crushed so that there
is no organized protest to economic expansion. It follows that, as stated
by Rev. Wright, the Black Church is also currently under assault. The
Black church has historically led the way in the liberation of Americas
and the worlds oppressed. Hence, the Black churches mission is far greater
than Senator Obama becoming the president of an oppressive nation. To
paraphrase Rev. Wright, if Obama becomes president he too must be
scrutinized.

The will of the American people is based on alleged opinion polls. Most
pollsters have an agenda and are more interested in shaping public opinion
than in reporting it; and inordinate importance is attached to polling
results. Pollsters report their findings as if the views of the few
individuals surveyed represent the thinking of the nation as a wholeand
then the nation is supposed to adopt that thinking as national policy.

In truth professional pollsters contrive polls to produce the desired
results. In America, the prevailing attitude is that the opinion of the
majority is more important than whether are not that opinion is based on
sound evidence or moral correctness. Polls are just another way of
assuring that the will of the elite over all of us. The decisions
affecting the important issuesthe so-called war on terrorismare being made
by a handful of individuals who are personally economically invested and
stand to reap significant profits.

The goals of the secret societies empowered today are the continuation of
the underlying skullduggery. Having been successful in creating wealth, a
select group of men whoonce unhindered by religionwill be able to dominate
covertly. They along with their colleagues have created
conflictsincluding world warsas part of a dialectical process of
consolidating global power.

President Bush and John Kerry have acknowledged their membership in the
secret society, Skull and Bones, Hillary Clinton has been associated with
the powerful group the Bilderbergers, who meet in secluded places,
arrogantly plotting the subversion and silent takeover of constitutional
governments everywhere. Their goal is a World Government ran exclusively
by their hand-picked puppets. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Ephesians 6:12

There is a reason Senator Hillary Clinton has stayed in the race. Hillary
Clinton the chosen one of the elites. Dont be surprised if Senator Hillary
Clinton, their predetermined choice, is nominated as the Democratic
candidate and ultimately becomes president. The elite have a strategy to
demonize Rev. Wright and to use him to discredit Senator Obama.

Obama the Muslim, 9/11 and Luttwak's Coup

Diary Entry by Ed Encho
*Ed Encho is a free lance writer, activist and consultant who
resides in West Central Florida.

It was brought to my attention this piece in the New York Times by
Edward Luttwak that drags out the Barack Obama as a Muslim story in the
most legitimate MSM forum yet. The piece is entitled "President
Apostate?" <http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/12/opinion/12luttwak.html> and
continues to spread the neocon whisper campaign that greatly benefits the
campaigns of the win-win scenario of McClinton in November.

Who is
Edward Luttwak?

Suffice it to say that he wrote the manual on how to execute a Coup d'etat
and in the piece that I am going to excerpt from by Maurizio Blondet from
the collection of essays in the book "Neoconned Again" you will get a
good idea on exactly where I am coming from.

:::::::

The link to the New York Times article is here
<http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/12/opinion/12luttwak.html> and it has been
picked up and run with through the seamier corners of the
right-wing blogosphere. In fairness to Mr. Obama who I personally would
not care one iota if he were a Muslim (actually I prefer a
constitutional amendment that requires every politician to be an atheist
in order to keep religion where it belongs which is completely out of
politics) but the neocons continue to insinuate, terrorize and
spread the dastardly little rumor that he may or may not be a secret
al Qaeda mole since it works so well with the rubes.

Here is a review on Luttwak's book in Time Magazine from 1969
appropriately entitled How To Seize A Country
<http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,844868,00.html> from
which I excerpt the following:

Unlike a revolutionary assault from the outside, Luttwak notes, a coup is
an inside job, done by a government's own members.

It involves minimal manpower and bloodshed. As in judo, the secret is to
use leverage and make a state overthrow itself. Bureaucracy facilitates
this by severing the loyalties that once personally bound rulers and their
servants.

A modern bureaucrat follows impersonal orders; if his immediate boss is
subverted, the bureaucrat tends to obey orders blindly, even orders
designed to topple his own government.

Now from the collection of essays Neoconned Again I excerpt a large
portion of Blondet's contribution on Luttwak
<http://www.amazon.com/Neo-Conned-Again-Hypocrisy-Lawlessness-Ra
pe/dp/1932528059> (there is another included in the book as well
that would allow one to put the motivations of the latest Obama as
Muslim story in context). I Just thought that I'd bring this out in the
interest of fairness since the Luttwak piece in the NYT is starting to
make the rounds. Consider it a public service.

Postscript to Chapter 3:
Luttwak's Coup D'Etat: A Practical Handbook
Maurizio Blondet

It is not a recent book. Published by Harvard University Press in 1968, it
is entitled Coup d'Etat: A Practical Handbook. Its author is Edward
Luttwak, the well-known military expert who was an adviser on National
Security to Ronald Reagan. He is Jewish, an ultra-conservative and a
militarist with known links to the CIA, to friends in the Pentagon, to the
military-industrial complex and, naturally, to JINSA.

[ About JINSA --The Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs
(JINSA) is a non-profit, non-partisan and nonsectarian educational
organization committed to explaining the need for a prudent national
security policy for the United States, addressing the security
requirements of both the United States and the State of Israel, and
strengthening the strategic cooperation relationship between these two
great democracies.]

We will seek to present crucial passages from this old book,
limiting ourselves to underlining in bold the ideas which could have
been in the minds of those - if our hypothesis is correct - who
orchestrated the tragedy of September 11.

CHAPTER 1: WHAT IS A COUP D'ETAT?

A coup d'tat is not necessarily assisted by either the intervention of the
masses, or, to any significant degree, by military-type force. The
assistance of these forms of direct force would no doubt make it easier to
seize power, but it would be unrealistic to think that they would be
available to the organizers of a coup.

If a coup does not make use of the masses, or of warfare, what instrument
of power will enable it to seize control of the State? The short answer is
that the power will come from the State itself.

A coup consists of the infiltration of a small but critical segment of the
State apparatus, which is then used to displace the government from its
control of the remainder [JINSA infiltrated the Pentagon in precisely this
manner].

CHAPTER 2: WHEN IS A COUP D'ETAT POSSIBLE?

First of all, Luttwak lists the necessary "preconditions": 1. The social
and economic conditions of the target country must be such as to confine
political participation to a small fraction of the population [this is the
case in America where non-voters are the majority].

2. The target State must be substantially independent and the influence
of foreign powers in its internal political life must be relatively
limited" [the United States is the only State remaining that enjoys these
conditions].

3. The target State must have a political centre. If there are several
centres these must be identifiable and they must be politically, rather
than ethnically, structured. If the State is controlled by a
non-politically organized unit [like the CFR, the representative of
business] the coup can only be carried out with its consent or neutrality.

Already in the Preface, Luttwak underlined as essential the fact that the
perpetrators of a coup must be able to count upon "the absence of a
politicised community," upon the apathy of the public.

"The dialogue between the rulers and the ruled [upon which democratic
legitimacy is founded] can only take place if there is a large enough
section of society which is sufficiently literate, well fed and secure to
'talk back.'" But "without a politicised population, the State is nothing
other than a machine.

Then the coup d'tat becomes feasible because, like every machine, one can
take control of everything by grasping the essential levers." [Now
Luttwak identifies this "machine" in the Bureaucracy.]

The growth of modern bureaucracy has two implications which are crucial to
the feasibility of the coup: the development of a clear distinction
between the permanent machinery of State and the political leadership
[which changes], and the fact is, like most large organizations, the
bureaucracy has a structured hierarchy with definite chains of command....

The importance of this development lies in the fact that if the
bureaucrats are linked to the political leadership, an illegal seizure of
power must take the form of a 'Palace Revolution,' and it essentially
concerns the manipulation of the person of the ruler. He can be forced to
accept policies or advisers, he can be killed or held captive, but
whatever happens the Palace Revolution can only be conducted from the
'inside' and by 'insiders' [in these pages, we have seen nothing but the
work of insiders surrounding a weak President].

The State bureaucracy has to divide its work into clear-cut areas of
competence, which are assigned to different departments. Within each
department there must be an accepted chain of command, and standard
procedures have to be followed. Thus a given piece of information, or a
given order, is followed up in a stereotyped manner, and if the order
comes from the appropriate source, at the appropriate level, it is carried
out.... The apparatus of the State is therefore to some extent a 'machine'
which will normally behave in a fairly predictable and automatic manner.

A coup operates by taking advantage of this machine-like behaviour; during
the coup, because it uses parts of the State apparatus to seize the
controlling levers; afterwards because the value of the 'levers' depends
on the fact that the State is a machine.

Who are the best conspirators? Here is how Luttwak describes them: All
power, all participation, is in the hands of the small educated elite, and
therefore radically different from the vast majority of their countrymen,
practically a race apart. The masses recognize this and they also accept
the elite's monopoly on power, unless some unbearable exaction leads to
desperate revolt.... Equally, they will accept a change in government,
whether legal or otherwise.

After all, it is merely another lot of 'them' taking over" [this is
precisely the case of American society: a great mass of badly educated
people, remains passive because of need, accepts the new capitalist
flexibility so as to hold on to or find work].

Thus, after a coup...the majority of the people will neither believe nor
disbelieve.... This lack of reaction is all the coup needs on the part of
the people to stay in power.

The lower levels of the bureaucracy will react - or rather fail to react -
in a similar manner and for similar reasons: the 'bosses' give the orders,
can promote or demote and, above all, are the source of that power and
prestige.... After the coup, the man who sits at district headquarters
will still be obeyed - whether he is the man who was there before or not -
so long as he can pay the salaries....

For the senior bureaucrats, army and police officers, the coup will be a
mixture of dangers and opportunities. For the greater number of those who
are not too deeply committed, the coup will offer opportunities rather
than dangers. They can accept the coup and, being collectively
indispensable, can negotiate for even better salaries and positions.

As the coup will not usually represent a threat to most of the elite, the
choice is between the great dangers of opposition and the safety of
inaction. All that is required in order to support the coup is, simply, to
do nothing - and that is what will usually be done.

Thus, at all levels, the most likely course of action following a coup is
acceptance ...This lack of reaction is the key to the victory of the coup.

CHAPTER 3: THE STRATEGY OF A COUP D'ETAT

If we were revolutionaries, wanting to destroy the power of some of the
political forces, the long and often bloody process of revolutionary
attrition can achieve this. Our purpose is, however, quite different: we
want to seize power within the present system, and we shall only stay in
power if we embody some new status quo supported by those very forces
which a revolution may seek to destroy.... This is perhaps a more
efficient method, and certainly a less painful one, than that of a classic
revolution [this is a perfection description of the neo-conservative coup
d'tat].

Though we will try to avoid all conflict with the 'political' forces, some
of them will almost certainly oppose a coup. But this opposition will
largely subside when we have substituted our new status quo for the old
one, and can enforce it by our control of the State bureaucracy and
security forces. We shall then be carrying out the dual task of imposing
our control on the machinery of State while at the same time using it to
impose our control on the country at large.

As long as the execution of the coup is rapid, and we are cloaked in
anonymity, no particular political faction will have either a motive, or
opportunity, to oppose us.

CHAPTER 4: THE PLANNING OF THE COUP D'ETAT

Whether it is a two party system, as in much of the Anglo-Saxon world,
where parties are in effect coalitions of pressure groups, or whether they
are the class or religion-based parties of much of continental Europe, the
major political parties in developed and democratic countries will not
present a direct threat to the coup.

Though such parties have mass support at election time, neither they nor
their followers are versed in the techniques of mass agitation. The
comparative stability of political life has deprived them of the
experience required to employ direct methods, and the whole climate of
their operation revolves around the concept of periodic elections.

Though some form of confrontation may be inevitable, it is essential to
avoid bloodshed, because this may well have crucial negative repercussions
amongst the personnel of the armed forces and the police.

CHAPTER 5: THE EXECUTION OF THE COUP D'ETAT

With detailed planning, there will be no need for any sort of headquarters
structure in the active stage of the coup: for if there is no scope for
decision-making there is no need for decision-makers and their apparatus.
In fact, having a headquarters would be a serious disadvantage: it would
constitute a concrete target for the opposition and one which would be
both vulnerable and easily identified.... We should avoid taking any
action that will clarify the nature of the threat and thus reduce the
confusion that is left in the defensive apparatus of the regime....

The leaders of the coup will be scattered among the various teams.

[As we can see Luttwak is theoretically discussing an invisible coup
d'etat: the infiltrated coup participants speak with the voice of the
legitimate government, of that which they have seized. On September 11,
let's remember, the immediate entourage of President Bush were not
thinking of an Arab attack, but of a military coup d'tat. It is for this
reason that the President was taken to a secure location for 10 hours].

In the period immediately after the coup, they [the high level Civil
Servants and Military Commanders] will probably see themselves as isolated
individuals whose careers, and even lives, could be in danger. This
feeling of insecurity may precipitate two alternative reactions, both
extreme: they will either step forward to assert their loyalty to the
leaders of the coup or else they will try to foment or join in the
opposition against us. Both reactions are undesirable from our point of
view.

Assertions of loyalty will usually be worthless since they are made by men
who have just abandoned their previous, and possibly more legitimate,
masters. Opposition will always be dangerous and sometimes disastrous.
Our policy towards the military and bureaucratic cadres will be to reduce
this sense of insecurity. We should establish direct communications with
as many of the more senior officers and officials as possible to convey
one principal idea in a forceful and convincing manner: that the coup will
not threaten their positions in the hierarchy and the aims of the coup do
not include a reshaping of the existing military or administrative
structures [this appears to be exactly the task of JINSA].

The masses have neither the weapons of the military nor the administrative
facilities of the bureaucracy, but their attitude to the new government
established after the coup will ultimately be decisive. Our immediate aim
will be to enforce public order, but our long-term objective is to gain
the acceptance of the masses so that physical coercion will not longer be
needed.... Our far more flexible instrument will be our control over the
means of mass communication.... In broadcasting over the radio and
television services our purpose is not to provide information about the
situation, but rather to affect its development by exploiting our monopoly
of these media. [This is exactly what the American mass media has done
since September 11.]

[The action of the media] will be achieved by conveying the reality and
strength of the coup instead of trying to justify it [the emotional blow
of the collapse of the World Trade Centre was presented with plenty of
"reality" and "force" by CNN]. We will have fragmented the opposition so
that each individual opponent would have to operate in isolation. In these
circumstances, the news of any further resistance against us would act as
a powerful stimulant to further resistance by breaking down this feeling
of isolation. We must, therefore, make every effort to withhold such
news. If there is in fact some resistance...we should strongly emphasize
that it is isolated, the product of the obstinacy of a few misguided or
dishonest individuals who are not affiliated to any party or group of
significant membership. The constant working of the motif of isolation,
and the emphasis on the fact that law and order have been re-established,
should have the effect of making resistance appear as dangerous and
useless.

There will arise, Luttwak says, "the inevitable suspicions that the coup
is a product of the machinations of the Company [American slang for the
CIA]. This can only be dispelled by making violent attacks on it...and the
attacks should be all the more violent if these suspicions are in fact
justified.... We shall make use of a suitable selection of unlovely
phrases [for example, anti-Americanism? Anti-Semitism?]. Even if their
meanings have been totally obscured by constant and deliberate misuse,
they will be useful indicators of our impeccable nationalism."

It seems to this author that these paragraphs describe, with shocking
precision, all that has taken place in America since September 11.

ACTIVISM: No war, No Warming ! Stop the RNC !

No War, No Warming - No Mas, No More - Stop the RNC!

Come to the Twin Cities, Minnesota To Take Action at the Republican National Convention

Sept. 1-4, 2008. Come Early!

With the occupation of and war in Iraq continuing and escalating--with more Iraqis and US soldiers dying--with the suicide rate of vets hitting record numbers--and with the costs of war spiraling out of control with hundreds of millions being spent in Iraq every day that is badly needed here at home for housing, jobs, schools, health care and clean energy--we must resist!

We are also experiencing climate disruption on a major scale as carbon emissions keep going up and up. People all over the world, especially low-income people and people of color, are feeling the global warming impacts in the form of super-destructive tornadoes, cyclones, hurricanes and drought. Our climate is spiraling out of control because of the power of the oil, coal and automobile companies who have put their profits before human lives and our threatened ecosystem.

The US drive toward empire and global domination of all people in order to control and exploit the earth's resources is being led by the violent neoconservatives who dominate the Republican Party.

This drive toward death must stop! We must let the country know that large numbers of us reject their plans to keep wrecking our ecosystem, wage wars for oil and make a mockery of democracy. We must rise up and put our bodies in their way.

No War, No Warming is calling for people to join in nonviolent direct action to disrupt the opening proceedings of the RNC.

We will be working in coordination with Twin Cities activists and progressive groups who are organizing RNC actions to successfully implement a diverse action strategy. No War, No Warming's plan is to establish public assembly sites to help facilitate mass participation in marches to the Xcel convention center where the RNC is meeting in order to reclaim strategic areas around it. Our intention is to occupy that space--to swarm, sieze and stay--using creative acts of direct action and nonviolent civil disobedience.

This is an open cluster and we encourage people to start organizing affinity groups now. We will be participating in spokescouncil meetings in the days before the convention and hold cluster meetings and trainings as well!

There are many action camps this summer and NWNW will be hosting one in Washington DC July 20-25. The camp -an Urban Action Training - will focus on mobile tactics including marches, blockades, swarms and more!

We urge support of the actions at the RNC. We must stop the RNC's drive for permanent war and deeper and deeper climate disruption!

What is the LAST straw? The Pen says HELP SHIRLEY GOLUB

Are you as outraged as we are?

The Senate just waved through another 163 billion dollars in war
profiteering, and they were all crowing about how they snuck in a
couple billion dollars of life and death social funding. The last
time anyone claimed such a victory it was Neville Chamberlain in
Munich. They aren't even bothering to pretend with lame non-binding
benchmarks anymore. It's just full speed ahead surrender to the
lunatic hawks.

What the hell are we going to do about this Congress run amok with
cowardice?? When are we going to stop apologizing for gutless wonders
who think they can just completely ignore their constituents on the
BIG issue that is destroying our country, emergency appropriation by
emergency appropriate. What would you give to stop them in their
tracks RIGHT NOW!??

There is a courageous candidate in the congressional primary in the
8th District of CA named Shirley Golub, who is challenging Nancy
Pelosi for the Democratic party nomination there. If we do EVERYTHING
we could have done to support her she will win, and in doing so
Congress will get the coldest wake up call they ever had. It's the
only message we can send now that matters at all.

If Shirley wins we can stop the occupation before it takes our entire
country into the abyss of endless generational religious war.
Otherwise they attack Iran before the general election and we all
need fallout shelters again. Friends, those are the stakes.

Shirley Golub Contributions:

Shirley Golub is the ONLY other Democrat in the CA 8th Congressional
District primary. Cindy Sheehan is not running until the November
general election, and as an independent. ONLY Shirley Golub can stop
the senseles death and mutilation of thousands more of our brave
service men and woman, the squandering of whatever is left of our
children's future, by defeating Nancy Pelosi on June 3. And she can
only do it with your help.

Primary election day is just 10 days off. In the next 10 days we need
to pull out all the stops. Shirley needs your valiant contribution to
run the biggest display ad she can in the last Sunday San Francisco
chronicle before then, to articulate the real choice we have. Please
read the definitive statement below and consider making a donation to
make this possible.

Text of Proposed S.F. Chronicle Ad:

We Have A Choice

Nearly every day in the Congress of the United States, those we have
designated as our representatives cast votes on the policies that
will control our lives in matters great and small. And it is our
right, indeed it is our duty, that when those representatives
persistently disregard the will of their constituents, that we cast
our votes on election day for someone else who would represent us
more faithfully.

When our founders created this grand experiment in self-government,
enshrined in our Constitution, they did not do so in the name of we
the media barons, or we the campaign consultants, or we the giant
corporations. This nation was founded for the good of "We The
People", and perhaps we should all take pause, to appreciate the
truly awesome responsibility with which that endows each of us.

It is not always the case that those who have failed us will even
have a challenger, who will step forward to present a positive
alternative. Too many times, we people have been beaten into
submission, by those who tell us that our voices don't count and will
not be heard. Too many times we have allowed those who have not acted
in our best interests to escape accountability. But when we do have a
choice, a real choice, there is no more urgent task than to cast our
votes in favor of that choice.

I am Shirley Golub, and I am challenging Nancy Pelosi for the
Democratic party primary nomination on June 3rd. If I receive the
most votes on that day, I will become the congressional nominee
representing the 8th Congressional District for the Democratic party.
If not, Nancy Pelosi will be that nominee. But one way or another,
YOU, the citizens of my district, have the absolute power to
determine the result, by coming out to vote on election day, and by
voting your conscience.

This very week, Nancy Pelosi again defied us as the Speaker of the
House, to push a war occupation funding bill opposed by the majority
of her own party. This bill would never have even come to vote in the
House of Representatives, but for her obstinate determination to
disregard the will of her people. And, in the grandest act of
hypocrisy of all, when put to vote, she herself voted against the
very bill she was trying to force on the rest of us.

But if anyone thought the failure of the House bill was a victory,
the Senate waved through the same thing a couple days later. And if
this bill were to pass back in the House and be signed into law, we
would be surrendering our brave men and women in our armed forces to
yet another year of senseless mortal danger in Iraq, with no
prospects for actual strategic success, with no hope of making
America any safer in the world. This is exactly what we the
constituents of the 8th Congressional district do NOT want.

So what is this charade where Nancy Pelosi votes against her own
bill, as if she had no choice in the matter of bringing it up in the
first place? Well, WE do have a choice. And if we accept our
responsibility of exercising that choice, we can change the dynamic
in the Congress of the United States in a way that will affect every
other district in the country. People all over the country will take
note that the citizens of San Francisco have finally had it.

Great social movements in our country's history have been founded in
the struggle to win the right to vote. The civil rights movement, the
women's suffragette movement, were for the very soul of our nation.
Even today the struggle goes on, with reactionary elements in some
states pushing to curtail the right to vote with various voter ID
schemes, poll restrictions, and other devices, some already rubber
stamped by an undeniably right wing Supreme Court.

But for the moment, we of the 8th Congressional District of CA retain
our unrestricted right to do as we always have, to take a couple of
minutes on election day, to make our voices heard, in the most clear
possible way, to turn thumbs up or thumbs down on the current
incumbent.

And that is why I am asking you, if you are as unhappy about the war
funding put forward by the Speaker that we have endured for going on
the last two years, that you must come out and support me in that
very simple and fundamental way. I would not have entered this race
unless I believed that I would be the faithful representative that
Nancy Pelosi most decidedly is not.

I am asking you to believe that you CAN make a difference, and to
believe that change is possible, long enough for that change to
actually happen.

Thank you for your kind attention, and I will see you at the polls on
election day.

Here is an interesting account of how the cancongov spins

Spin Cycles: Calling Dr. Spin

Interview with Dan Miles

Director of Communications to the Minister of Finance

February 2, 2007

IB: Was there something about your experience as a TV journalist that you thought you could bring to the table when you switched over to political communications?

DM: No question about it! As a journalist you learn the system, you learn how to grab a sound bite, you look for things, you recognize what a story is! What makes a story, and what is important, the important elements of a story. And quite frankly those are elements that are quite valuable when you get to the government's side of the table. I think that the biggest thing that the communications on the government's side can bring to the table and what they try to focus on is anticipation. You have to be able to anticipate the question, and then you have to be able to anticipate the issue and then you can go from there to try to craft a message to try and get you message out… "put out the fire" so to speak.

IB: Take me through the process of what happens when you are about to roll out a major policy announcement.

DM: Clearly I mean, to me the foundation has got to be the policy and it's got to be a good policy. I've had in the time that I've worked in government I've seen the challenges posed by trying to communicate a bad policy. And it is very difficult if you have a good sound policy to work with then you know, you are ahead of the game so to speak. But that is only the beginning! You could have the greatest policy in the world but if it is not communicated properly, or not communicated at all people are not going to know about it, and it is not going to serve the purpose and the people of the province or the country and it certainly its not going to serve the government or the party well! You start with a good solid policy and then you dissect that policy and see what are important to people because that is was really resonates. What is important to folks in Ontario, or out in rural Ontario whatever your policy might be. And then you cease on those, and its not unlike a journalist, you ask yourself; what is the lede* . You know, as a journalist you never bury the lede. That is a cardinal rule. You take the opposite side and you want to lede with the lede. Basically what you are trying to do for journalist is to make it easy, and make your lede their lede. That is a crucial part of what we do.

[*Editor's note: "lede" is common shorthand for the "lead" as in "the lead or first story in the newscast." It is spelled that way to avoid confusion with the metallic element called lead.]

IB: It's interesting that you should say that because in the press release you issued at the time of the income trust announcement your lead was about tax fairness. I can see why you would want that to be the headline because it is a better headline for you, but it struck me that you had buried the lede there.

DM: Well I mean, income trust, there was a lot of focus on it as simple stand-alone issue. But I mean from our prospective this is about tax fairness! The whole idea, the whole reason minister Flaherty did what he did was to level the playing field between trusts and corporations and also to provide tax relief to some of the senior folks who have invested in income trusts and would have been affected by this announcement. To us, the whole idea, the headline of this is tax fairness that is the motive behind the policy here

IB: Well that's what you wanted the headline to be. You wanted to steer reporters in that direction.

DM: Well clearly, if I may from my perspective is to be good at what we do, we have to make it as easy as possible for journalist. They shouldn't have to be reaming through reading pages and pages and paragraphs of material to try and find what we are trying to tell them. What it is that you are trying to communicate to the people of Canada. If I can go back to tax fairness for a second, it was about the package! Ultimately, a lot of people focus on one component of the package. But tax fairness is about the package of items including income trust, including leveling the playing field, including corporate tax cuts, including pension splitting for seniors, and including a reduction in the age credit for seniors. So it was more than just one thing but obviously reporters and business reporters have focused on just one element of the package.

IB: What about preparing the Minister for the questions he is going to be asked and other preparations for the rollout?

John Baird

DM: Well once you have the policy, then you have identified the components of the policy you that you think are front and centre and are important to people and what are going to resonate with people. Then you determine what it is that is going to help portray that; what is going to help paint the picture in the minds of Canadians. What will help you paint that picture? Then you develop an event. And this depends on the gravity and importance of the policy, as there are a number of factors that determine what your event is going to be. And then if it is deemed that is to be of great significant then obviously you are going to develop and event and what is the picture of that event going to be? This is crucially important because at the end of the day it is going to be the picture that is painted that will be in the minds of Canadians. If I can use our drug treatment event as an example; on any given day we are competing with 100's of news items coming in from around the world especially in the world that we live in today where everything can come from satellite and online so competition is quite fierce to gain attention in the media and with the drug treatment even that we did, clearly it was a controversial policy and it was something that wanted to portray to get across to people of the importance, and we wanted to grab their attention, and that Is exactly what we did. It is something that to this day people are talking about. And minister Baird wondered how the conversation went, it was a Sunday morning if I recall correctly and I was in the office and he was on the phone, and he said we needed to do something with needles because this was obviously the instrument creating the problem. So we had a chat about it, and basically I said we cannot use needles it's just not fees able! Because of disease so we couldn't do it, so we used brand new hypodermic needles and I said you've got to paint the picture, you've got to reach your hands into the box and grab a 2 big handful of these needles and deliver your lines, deliver the message and then just drop them and they would scatter and flow all over the table. That is something to this day that people remember.

IB: You knew that would be a powerful image that it would be on all the newscasts.

DM: Yea! Well I didn't know it would be on all the newscasts but I knew that it would grab their attention I knew it was something they could not ignore. And it was something that was a startling image but I think it got the message across, it basically allowed people to see how serious we were. About the policy but also about the problem, how serious the problem was and it was a groping visual image

IB: What about the wallpaper, the image we see behind the Minister?

DM: Well I mean wallpaper, whether you are watching the football game on Sunday or newscast or event newscast; it's within your picture. It provides another element. So in this day of instant news and instant media, you know you can look at the picture and know exactly what it is about

IB: And a lot of people watch TV with the sound off anyway.

DM: Well that's true, it's absolutely true! But in this day when people are really really busy and we've got competing news papers and competing internet and we've got competing wires and so on and so forth, you know people don't have the time to sit down and spend hours reading through stuff. People quite often skim and, and look at pictures and read headlines and the whole point is so that when someone looks at that picture they know exactly what it is about. They don't have to spend a whole lot of time about it. They can look at the picture and say yea ok! It is about the giants, I see their logo in the background.

IB: And sometimes you have to get complex issues down into 2 or 3 words.

DM: You are talking about the headlining, yea right? And quite frankly its important to be able to communicate something in terms that resonate with people but also simply and effectively and that comes down to not a lot of verbiage something that you can boil down into something that they can remember, something that grabs them. Certainly you want to provide more information, but you want to catch their interest initially. And if you don't catch their interest initially, they are never going to read about your policy anyway. But you've got to grab them and then they'll go "oh, maybe I'll read more about that! That sounds interesting!"

IB: What about the talking points? How do you come up with the talking points and how are they used?

DM: Again it depends on your event, on how significant your event is. Lately, in the current job that I have been doing, the talking points could be anything from 10-minute brief remarks to the budget speech and those are what I have had to work on lately in the coarse of my responsibilities here. Basically what you want to do is to articulate the policy and you want to weave in some of those lines that are going to grab people's attention. Some of those lines that when you guys are out there and you hear a recording and you say "wow, that is my sound bite" I mean you actually identify some of those, and you say ok, here I am going to explain the policy and then I am going to throw in a nice sound bite because I know that is what you are looking for and that is what I am looking to get on the news to try to articulate our policy.

IB: And so you help the Minister craft the sound bites?

DM: Yea, there is no question! The minister and all the ministers I've worked with they were all very effective at it and they recognized what a sound bite was and quite frankly it comes back to from my perspective, the job of the journalist that much easier. That is my job, to make your job easier. And if I can make your job easier then you can look at our policy look at our event, look at what we do a little more favorably

IB: You say you want to make our job easier, but you don't get much appreciation for that. You get called a spin-doctor and what not. Not much thanks for that.

DM: You know I was on your side of the fence for quite some times and you are a little cynical, there is no question about it! But you know I've got my job and you've got your job and my job is to communicate a policy and your job is to try and determine if I am feeding you a bill of goods or trying to get to the bottom of the policy and let people know if it is a good policy or if there are flaws in it or whatever. My job is to try and articulate to Canadians the benefits of our policy. Your job is to in a fair and balanced way to extend that to Canadians and perhaps provide them with a bit of commentary.

IB: Going back to the drug policy announcement, did it come off the way you wanted it to?

DM: That was reported in the wall street journal. It was reported on the national news right across the country on every channel. It made it in the newspaper! So you know the policy it self was a first it was controversial so obviously the policy was very controversial to journalists so we positioned in a way that certainly grabbed everybody

IB: People who do what you do are commonly called spin-doctors. How do you react when people call you that?

DM: I laugh, spin-doctor? No I don't consider myself a spin-doctor really you know the fact is that we are about communicating government policy. My job is to insure that Canadians understand and that they get the benefit what we are doing. I am a member of the government but at the end of the day it is about articulating. If we cannot got Canadians to A) learn about the policy and know about the policy then how at the end of the day are they going to measure our success as a government so we have to try to effectively communicate a policy to people so that at the end of our mandate they know that we have done something.

As Britain declines, food prices go WAY up

Family budgets set to rise again as production costs climb at fastest pace for more than 20 years

Soaring food prices have sent household bills rocketing

Factory gate prices surged at their fastest pace since records began more than 20 years ago during April, official figures showed today.

Soaring petrol costs, Budget tax hikes on alcohol and tobacco as well as rising steel scrap prices pushed up output prices 1.4 per cent between March and April, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This is the highest monthly increase since records began in 1986 - likely to fuel inflation concerns among Bank of England policymakers and jolt hopes of interest rate cuts.

The price hikes lifted the annual rate of increase to 7.5 per cent in the 12 months to April - also a record - as surging food product costs added to the pressure.

Most economists expect rates to fall to 4.75 per cent next month, but the gloomy figures add to fears that the Bank's hands will be tied by its inflation-watching mandate.

Howard Archer, chief UK economist with Global Insight, said: "This raises serious questions as to whether the Bank will be willing to cut interest rates as soon as June despite current signs that the economic downturn may be deepening and widening."

Meanwhile, millions of families are having to spend almost £1,000 a year extra on food after more punishing price rises.

The annual increase in the price of a basket of essentials surged to 19.1 per cent in May, according to the Daily Mail Cost of Living Index.

The rate has jumped alarmingly from 15.5 per cent in April – a 3.6 per cent rise – and there is no sign of the pressure easing.

There is now a worldwide crisis over supplies of key crops such as corn, wheat and rice. It has triggered food riots in some countries. And in the UK it has brought the biggest rises in bills in a generation.

A family which spent £100 a week on food last year now has to find another £19.10 for the same products, equivalent to £993 a year. Once "must-pay" bills for petrol, mortgages, power and council tax are added, the extra cost is more like £2,200.

Yet the official inflation rate is just 2.6 per cent. Experts say a worldwide drive to produce biofuels – made from corn, wheat and soya as an alternative to oil – is a major factor.

Farmers have switched from food production to biofuel crops.

Last month, the EU agreed the biofuel content of all petrol and diesel should be 2.5 per cent.

This is set to rise to 10 per cent by 2020. But the Government's two most senior scientists, Professor John Beddington and Professor Robert Watson, have called for a rethink on the rush to biofuels.

Scroll down for more...

Professor Beddington said: "It's very hard to imagine the world growing enough crops to produce renewable energy and at the same time meet the enormous demand for food."

Gordon Brown is understood to be preparing to call on the EU to scrap the plan.

The effect of biofuels on food prices has been dramatic. A litre of corn oil has more than doubled in a year, to £1.38, in one of the big supermarkets. Fusilli pasta, made from wheat, is up 81 per cent, a baguette by 41 per cent and Weetabix cereal 21 per cent.

Farmers are also facing huge increases in feed bills, leading to dearer meat and dairy products. Milk is up 16.6 per cent, English butter by 62 per cent and mild cheddar by 25.6 per cent.

Free-range eggs, which come from hens fed a corn mix, have leapt in price by an alarming 47.4 per cent in a year to £2.58 a dozen.

Basmati rice is up more than 60 per cent in 12 months and Britain's biggest supplier, Tilda, has warned of a further rise of around 30 per cent in the coming year.

Chancellor Alistair Darling has called on his EU counterparts to take radical steps on food prices. He wants "fundamental reform" of the controversial Common Agricultural Policy.

The soaring price of oil is the second major factor battering consumers. Figures from the AA show the cost of diesel has risen by a quarter in the past year, while unleaded petrol is up 15.4 per cent.

The organisation says motorists are the victims of international oil speculators and UK taxes.

Spokesman Luke Bosdet said: "The oil companies tell us there is no shortage, but market speculators are having a field day gambling on prices.

"It is a pantomime. The Government is threatening to add another 2p in duty in October. We think the Chancellor needs to announce as soon as possible that this will be postponed."

The higher price of oil is dragging up the cost of both gas and electricity.

Householders who have seen a 15per cent increase so far this year face another 25per cent rise by September.

The Daily Mail Cost of Living Index is compiled in association with the price comparison websites MySupermarket. co.uk and uSwitch.com.

MySupermarket offers price comparisons across the big three chains – Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's.

Many families, however, are changing to budget stores such as Aldi, Lidl and Netto.

Sales of fresh produce at Aldi are up a remarkable 40 per cent year-on-year. The Government's official inflation rate, the Consumer Prices Index, is expected this week to put inflation at around 2.6 per cent.

The Office for National Statistics argues that falls in the price of electrical gadgets, clothes and furniture offset the increases in food. But critics say that fails to reflect real life.

Tim Wolfenden of uSwitch said: "Consumers must be feeling like the rug is being pulled out from under their feet. Every time they regain their balance another set of price hikes knocks them over again.

"However you look at it, 2008 is shaping up badly for British consumers."

But I don't buy any of those every week and I can't eat them.

- Bernard, Edinburgh Scotland

This is not just in Britain. Global food prices have rocketed recently. However, people have made so much on their houses in the last few years, that this rise is easily affordable.

- Graeme Carter, London, UK

And where are we supposed to find this extra money?
They are making billions in profit.
Something has to be done soon. Or we will be the country that is going to need food aide!
Or this country is going to become a land of homeless starving paupers!

- Colin, Essex

The Consumer Price Index is very accurate. I buy furniture, clothes and electrical gadgets once a week, but only buy food, gas, petrol etc once a year. If only...

- Marlene Dietrich, Bradford

At the care home I work for, the residents' food allowance has only been increased by 4% since last year which means that we keep having to cut back on what we buy and serve. The company does not want to spend any more on the residents and denies there is a problem.

- David Jessop, Newcastle, UK

I have yet to see something that has gone up by just 2.5% which is what this bunch of shysters tell us is the rate of inflation. The Labour party is around 20 million pounds in debt and has not been in the black for years yet we are told to trust these people with our economy. Look around the world and you see Governments reducing, suspending or stripping various forms of tax and VAT to help their people. What does our lot do, why the only thigh this sad bunch know how to do and that's put up tax again. The fact that our pathetic chancellor is still considering upping the fuel tax says it all. He should have announced weeks ago that this was not to happen. With the extra vat he is getting due to the rising price of crude he could reduce the cost of fuel by 9p a litre but this is the Government of take take and take.

- Duncan Walker, London England

What a ridiculous statement in a market economy.

Spokesman Luke Bosdet said: "The oil companies tell us there is no shortage, but market speculators are having a field day gambling on prices."

If there was enough for the World's needs then the price would come back down - that's how the market economy works. In reality, the oil price is on a one way trip to $200 a barrel and beyond, and in fairly short measure. The only thing that might hold it back is the likely recession in the developed world but that's only going to act as a slight brake, it won't stop the relentless rise. We need to adjust to the fact that over the next generation or so, our living standards are going to drop - the free ride on the back of the petro economy is over for good.

- Kevin Phelps, UK

For decades food has got cheaper in real terms. This is the first significant increase I can remember. Maybe it'll make people buy more cheap vegetables and stop wasting so much food.

- Marty, Altrincham

Expect Gordon shortly to suggest 'let them eat cake'!

- Graham, St Albans

It's much the same over here, I have one good meal a week - as in steak and 5 forms of veggies.

- Caval, Melbourne, Australia

So inflation is at 2.5% is it! in Nu Labour La, La land it may be, but in the real world with us mere mortals it is 18% and rising.

- D Brown, Solihull

Nu Labour government is driving this country to the brink of poverty, where do they think you get the money from for all these extras, my daughter now goes food shopping with twenty pounds to feed three of them.

- Jean Hartell, Wolverhampton England

The government will still tell us inflation is below 3%.

- Robert Morgan, Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne & Wear

When will the public be told the real facts about the EU? It has been responsible for ADDING at least £20/week to the food bills of the average British family for years. In addition our budget contributions ALONE since we joined are worth about £500 Billion at today's values. Yet we are not even being given the opportunity to vote on the EU Constitution which will destroy the UK as a nation.

- Jerry, Croydon, England

When fuel costs increase, so to does the cost of food. It's time for the fuel levy to be reduced, in an effort to bring down food prices.

- Michael, Bedfordshire

How many families drink a bottle of Jacobs Creek Chardonay each week at 64% up and frozen peas up 67% (when you can substitute for veg in season, broccoli, lettuce and tomatoes are all the same as last year)? Take these out of the equation and the statistics are more realistic. Methinks the Mail doth protest too much!

- Sk, East Sussex

The food crisis is caused by the European Union, for three reasons. First it stupidly follows all the fads about green foods and it insisting that grain is converted to petrol rather than being used as food. Secondly, the Common Agricultural Policy is notorious for encouraging and rewarding inefficiency. And thirdly, by preventing a free world market in food it makes food from outside the EU expensive. Remember when we used to have all that lovely butter, cheese and other products from New Zealand? The sooner we leave the EU the better.

- George, Bolton, England

The sooner there is a General Election the better.
New Labour has taxed us all to death especially childless couples and single people who cannot claim tax credits.

- Stephen Holmes, Withington Manchester

2.6%... what a joke. Of course the true inflation figures could not possibly be published as this would have an immediate knock on effect on inflation linked pay claims. Just goes to show that how easily the figures can be manipulated to try con the minions. We can see through you Mr Brown (and cronies).

- Eric Hall, Chester le Street, Co. Durham

Gordon Brown's measure of inflation, the CPI, says it is only 2.4%, do NuLabour really think the public are stupid enough to believe them. To say that "falls in the price of electrical gadgets, clothes and furniture offset the increases in food" is ludicrous - I don't buy these every month, but I do need food, water, gas and electricity on a daily basis. What world do they live in?

- Mo, London

The extra £19 per week could be saved by dropping the alcohol alone. It could be further cut by dropping the chocolate biscuits, extra varieties of breakfast cereals and bread. It is also unnecessary to purchase bottled water when you already buy from the tap! I live on a low wage but get by on food from my allotment and only a few luxuries once in a while.

- Louisa, Winchester

Britain now has the most disreputable, tax thieving government ever. McBean would have us believe that the cost of living increases are down to world finances. Not so! Much is down to stealth taxes, council tax, fuel duty. Hope the electorate of Crewe consider this next week.

- Terence, Hereford, UK

Why are the public constantly been bombarded with price hikes. What was once an essential has now become a luxury full of packaging and surplus tax. Shame on those companies who are starving the public while they can eat all there alarming profits. It just doesn't make sense!

- Suzan Gumush, Kent

'victims of international oil speculators and UK taxes'.
There are no shortages, their GREED is the problem.

- Mickey V, Manchester UK

The official index of inflation needs to be scrapped and replaced urgently with something realistic. The same must be said of Gordon Brown.

- Tom Katz, Weybridge, UK

Re: your price index. Please tell me where you can buy bread at £65p. We pay £1.15 at our supermarket.

- Dennis, Sunderland UK

Brown wants to save the poor of the whole world, why doesn't he resign and grab a job at the UN instead, then maybe we can have a strong PM geared to raise the UK standard of living, where we can all feel secure enough to give generously voluntarily.

- George, London, UK.

So what are this government using to set the less than 3% inflation figures? Luxury goods should NOT be included in these mythical figures, essentials that we can't do without are the answer, but that would really set the cat among the pigeons, the truth might come out!

- Katie, Stoke

And, how on earth do you expect pensioners and retired people, those on fixed incomes and all those paid the minimum wage to exist?

- Kenneth, Suffolk, England

The CPI is a fiddle because the ONS does not reflect how consumer goods prices work.

Yes flat screen TV have dropped in price but they have now effectively replaced the old cathode ray tube TV. The price of a TV has therefore stayed the same not dropped.
When any new technology is introduced it is only the early buyers who pay the ridiculous prices asked.

- Dee Bee, Bournemouth

"We think the Chancellor needs to announce as soon as possible that this will be postponed."

No, the "chancellor" should ABANDON this theft, and REDUCE fuel tax by at least 20p/litre. He will still probably be laughing all the way to the bank even if he did this.

- David, UK

The great drive to save us from global warming is now costing people their lives. Stupid politicians in America and Europe thought Biofuel was part of the answer - tell that to the starving and dying throughout Africa. The EU should prevent the use of Biofuels and put pressure on the USA to do the same. I know I would rather eat than drive my car!

- John, Manchester

Perhaps people will now think twice before wasting food and flying to New York for the weekend. The winner is the environment.

- Anna, Brighton, England

The government would move the "goal posts" if it was appliances costing more and something not on the list costing less.

- Donald A Merritt, Watford Herts

Please do a like for like comparison (historical and current) with the U.S. and others in Europe eg: France, Germany. Then we can see whether the rises are the result of global influences or policies implemented by our current government.

- M Jeffs, Bucks UK

But there's no need to panic - inflation is running at only 2.5% - that's official.

- Martin, Newmarket, Suffolk

Thick sliced white loaf - 65p? Where do you shop? They are £1.20 in my local supermarket.

- Davep, Liverpool, UK

With prices going up hopefully it will stop people throwing out perfectly good food. Should balance out the wastage people have each year.

- Lol, UK

""must-pay" bills for petrol,"

That is LUXURY not "must pay.

You have problems paying for petrol, get rid of the car and take a bus.

- Ragnar Vagmornasson, UK

This country was self sufficient as far as food is concerned, then we joined the EU and they told us what we could and could not grow and how much we could grow. This shambles is the result of ten years of Labour bending its knee to any rubbish dictate from Europe and its destruction of our fishing and farming industry.

- John Phillips, Derby

A 20 kg Basmati rice bag used to cost less than today's price of 10 Kg bag.

- Di, London

I don't believe it - our wonderful Government tells us that inflation is only 2%.
Would they lie? Answers on a postcard please to Gordon McBroon, Temporary PM, Holyrood House (sorry, Downing Street.)

- Mike Randall, Worcester England

This is the time to get Labour OUT.

- Carol, Swansea Wales

It used to be the case that in third world countries people ate mainly rice and cycled everywhere. If things continue as they are in the UK,it won't be too long before we're all eating mainly rice and cycling everywhere. I suppose veggies and environmentalists will think this is progress!

- Mike, Dunstable England

The problem with bread, in particular, is that in this country it is rated as a premium product and so costs more in the first place. In other countries bread is rated as a basic staple and so costs less. My 'granary' loaf costs me anything from 1.48 to 1.60 unless it is on a special offer. I have cut bread now almost out of my life which has not only helped towards the cost of things I like but has helped also to reduce my waistline.

- Joe, Guildford, England

I'd like some of that 65p bread too! Haven't seen it at that price for a very long time...

- Harry Adams, Powys

I have said it all along, "This country is being held to ransom with a gun to its head' by the Macmafia and the Brussel Sprouts!

Their single intention is to close UK Plc down and turn into a prison colony!

- Neil Robinson, Hartlepool, England

Whilst I agree that the western world is being held to ransom by the oil producing States, it must be remembered that initial cost of crude oil is the same to all other nations of the western world. Why, then, is Britain more severely hit in prices at the pump than any of our European partners. The price we pay for diesel and petrol is directly reflected on the price we pay in the supermarkets for our essential food produce. Everything arrives on the supermarket shelves courtesy of road freight and diesel. If the British government’s economic and financial policy had not been so flawed over the last 10 years they would not need to take 65% in pump prices as tax, thus swelling the family shopping trolley by £1000.

- Michael Nye, Colnbrook, England

We now have a really big Tesco Extra in Shrewsbury, we also have Aldi, Netto and Lidl.

I have been round all of them, and Tesco come out cheapest for food on all accounts. So where are these shoppers getting these really cheap prices from when they mention these 'cut price' stores?

I think that these so called cheaper supermarkets have put out signals to people and conning them into thinking that they are cheaper.

Maybe it's where these shops are situated. Is Shropshire more expensive then?

- Jc, Shropshire

Let get back to valuing food. Why can't the young wives make wholesome food from leftovers just like we did in the 30s/40s/50s. The throw away society is in decline, and about time to.

- Peter Pyett, Rhodes Greece

In Morrisons two weeks ago green peppers were 78p, two weeks later they are now 99p, that's around a 27% increase in two weeks. How can inflation be around 2.5%?

- Frank Sloane, Durham

Brown the saviour who has taken a million children out of poverty and a million pensioners out of poverty, who has made five million benefit scroungers the new middle class (they seem to have all the latest mod cons and plenty of beer and cigarette money in my area). The taxpayer has been watching these sneaky tax rises going on for 11 years, and I hope those idiots who voted in this shower three times, feel thoroughly ashamed at their stupidity.

- Carol, Bideford, north Devon

Dennis, Sunderland UK;

Welcome to the planet Earth, Dennis, traveller from another world! Go in any Tesco, Sainsbury, Summerfield, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons etc and you will get a 800g loaf of bread for between 38p to 40p. It's called CHEAP VALUE own brand.

I rarely buy anything else and don't contribute 1p to the 10 Billion pounds of food wasted by all the 'wasters' in the UK. 'Wasters' who are daft enough to pay dear for their food, and then throw a lot of it away cause it makes them feel they're rich!

- Sean Hamerton, York

To Graeme Carter, London, UK - I fail to follow your rational about the increase in house prices cushions the home owners against the rising cost of living - you only realise the added price when you SELL your home, and then you either buy another at an inflated price - or live in "box city" and stuff the cash in your back pocket.

- Michael Nye, Colnbrook, England

Bread at Aldi is currently 37p a loaf.

- Cww, Suffolk

Sadly this something that will inevitably get worse. Fuel, food, travel, cars and household goods are going to get much more expensive. Every week there are millions of new consumers in China and India all wanting a similar standard of living to the West. The problem we have in the UK is that we are no longer self sufficient in anything.
