"Successful intersept" makes it sound like a video game, it's NOT.

Gen. James Cartwright says the Navy was successful in its effort to shoot down an inoperable spy satellite. The shooting down of the satelite will cost up to $60 million.

The fuel tank probably would have survived re-entry if the satellite had fallen to Earth on its own. It could have dispersed harmful or even potentially deadly fumes over an area the size of two football fields. Hydrazine is similar to chlorine or ammonia in that it affects the lungs and breathing tissue.

The Chinese military destroyed an aging weather satellite last year, prompting questions about whether the United States is merely flexing its muscle to show an economic and military rival that it can destroy satellites, too.

James Jeffrey, deputy national security adviser, denied such allegations this week. "This is all about trying to reduce the danger to human beings," he said.

But Beijing appears to have doubts.

"China is continuing to closely follow the possible harm caused by the U.S. action to outer space security and relevant countries," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Thursday.

This article may appear long, but it's leaving out the crucial information about hydrezine and berrilium threats to civilian populations.

Nor does it mention the plans to declare martial law if "things go wrong". They went wrong the minute they planned this satellite, the reasons they built the satellite are wrong, and this could conceivably go much more wrong, wrong, wrong.

WASHINGTON - High seas in the north Pacific may force the Navy to wait another day before launching a heat-seeking missile on a mission to shoot down a wayward U.S. spy satellite, the Defense Department said Wednesday.

Weather conditions are one of many factors that U.S. military officers are taking into account as they decide whether to proceed with the mission Wednesday or to put it off, according to a senior military officer who briefed reporters at the Pentagon on condition that he not be identified.
The officer said the assumption had been that the mission would go forward Wednesday night, unless conditions are determined to be unfavorable. Earlier in the day, bad weather in the north Pacific was causing high seas, which may be a problem for the USS Lake Erie, a cruiser armed with two SM-3 missiles, and the USS Decatur, which has one missile. According to NBC News sources, the Lake Erie will likely fire first, with the Decatur "shadowing" the other cruiser in case of trouble with the launch.

"We don't anticipate the weather being good enough today," the officer said, adding that conditions could improve enough in the hours ahead to permit it to go forward. A final decision would be made by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The Pentagon had been waiting until the space shuttle Atlantis returned to Earth before launching the missile.

"We're now into the window," the senior military officer said minutes after the shuttle landed.
He said the mission could go forward on any day until Feb. 29, when the satellite is projected to have re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, making it infeasible to attempt to hit it with the Navy missile.

"We're watching weather today," he said. The ground rules of the news conference were that the official could not be quoted by name.

The military will be making decisions each day on whether to proceed with an attempt or not — and criteria could change several times each day, he said.

The attempted shootdown was approved by President Bush out of concern that toxic fuel on board the satellite could crash to earth, the Defense Department has said.

Officials will know nearly immediately whether the missile has hit the satellite, but it will take a day or two to know whether the fuel tank has been destroyed, officials said. About an hour after the attempt, the Pentagon will release a written statement, followed by a briefing on the situation the following morning.

The attempted shootdown was approved by President Bush out of concern that toxic fuel on board the satellite could crash to Earth.

An attempt to blast a crippled U.S. spy satellite out of the sky using a Navy heat-seeking missile — possibly on Wednesday night — would be the first real-world use of this piece of the Pentagon's missile defense network. But that is not the mission for which it was intended.

The three-stage Navy missile, designated the SM-3, has chalked up a high rate of success in a series of tests since 2002 — in each case targeting a short- or medium-range ballistic missile, never a satellite. A hurry-up program to adapt the missile for this anti-satellite mission was completed in a matter of weeks; Navy officials say the changes will be reversed once this satellite is down.

The government issued notices to aviators and mariners to remain clear of a section of the Pacific beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, indicating the first window of opportunity to launch an SM-3 missile from a Navy cruiser, the USS Lake Erie, in an effort to hit the wayward satellite.

Having lost power shortly after it reached orbit in late 2006, the satellite is well below the altitude of a normal satellite. The Pentagon wants to hit it with an SM-3 missile just before it re-enters Earth's atmosphere, in that way minimizing the amount of debris that would remain in space.

Adding to the difficulty of the mission, the missile will have to do better than just hit the bus-sized satellite, a Navy official said Tuesday. It needs to strike the relatively small fuel tank aboard the spacecraft in order to accomplish the main goal, which is to eliminate the toxic fuel that could injure or even kill people if it reached Earth. The Navy official described technical aspects of the missile's capabilities on condition that he not be identified.

Also complicating the effort will be the fact that the satellite has no heat-generating propulsion system on board. That makes it more difficult for the Navy missile's heat-seeking system to work, although the official said software changes had been made to compensate for the lack of heat.

The Pentagon press secretary, Geoff Morrell, said Defense Secretary Robert Gates was briefed on the shootdown plan Tuesday by the two officers who will advise him on exactly when to launch the missile — Gen. Kevin Chilton, the head of Strategic Command, and Gen. James Cartwright, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who held Chilton's post until last summer.

"We all have an agreed-upon series of steps that need to be taken for this launch to be given the go-ahead," Morrell said, adding that no final decision has been made on when to make the attempt.

"The secretary is the one who will decide if and when to pull the trigger," the spokesman said, adding that Gates was departing Wednesday morning on an around-the-world trip that will include a stop in Honolulu, Hawaii, where a military command center will be monitoring the satellite operation.

Left alone, the satellite would be expected to hit Earth during the first week of March. About half of the 5,000-pound spacecraft would be expected to survive its blazing descent through the atmosphere and would scatter debris over several hundred miles.

Known by its military designation US 193, the satellite was launched in December 2006. It lost power and its central computer failed almost immediately afterward, leaving it uncontrollable. It carried a sophisticated and secret imaging sensor.

Morrell said the cost of adapting the Navy anti-missile system for the shootdown mission was $30 million to $40 million.

China and Russia have expressed concern at the planned shootdown, saying it could harm security in outer space. At the State Department on Tuesday, spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters that the U.S. action is meant to protect people from the hazardous fuel and is not a weapons test.

China was criticized last year when it used a missile to destroy a defunct weather satellite.

The Navy ship-based system, which includes a command-and-control and radar system known as Aegis, as well as the SM-3 missiles, is just one segment of a larger, far-flung missile defense system that has been in development by the American military for more than three decades.

Managed by the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency, the program includes interceptor missiles sitting in underground silos at Fort Greely, Alaska, and at Vanderberg Air Force Base, Calif., as well as radars around the world that are used to track an enemy missile and help the interceptor hit it.

As currently configured the missile defense system is designed mainly to counter a threat from North Korea. The Bush administration, fearing an emerging missile threat from Iran, is in talks with Poland and the Czech Republic to place interceptor missiles in Poland and a tracking radar in the Czech Republic. Russia has objected strenuously, saying such bases would be a threat to Russia.

A satellite update from this morning

THIS MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT THREAD YOU'VE EVER READ! THIS IS NO JOKE AND THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IS 100% ACCURATE AND HONEST.

I started a thread about two weeks ago giving updates on the falling satellite. For some unknown reason people didn't pay attention, so I am asking you to please read what I have to say here. I am going to discuss a couple of different concerns along with updates on usa-193'S 'strike-zone'. I have an extremely reliable & trustworthy source for inside information. This info is coming from a family member (1st cousin) who is a very high-ranking official with the New York JTTF (Joint Terrorism Task Force). USA-193 is currently the greatest known threat/risk to our country!

The only reason my cousin is willing to share this information is because of the extremely high threat risk associated with USA-193. I don't have any 'shocking' news, but I have news that confirms a lot of speculations.

First I will give an update on who's 'at-risk' as of my last briefing given to me at 0900, 2.17.08. The following info doesn't account for a missile strike, this is strictly where US-193 is due to land with no intereference. The area of concern still remains the Pacific Northwest. The current warning ranges from Eugene Oregon to Kamloops BC (Canada). That's just the north-south range. Current models show less than .005% chance of a harmless water strike (currently a land strike is imminent). The models show that there is a warning for Western Idaho and parts of NW Nevada. These warnings only show the current crash zone for USA-193, not the anticipated debris field! Obviously debris can come down hundreds if-not 'thousands' of miles away. Currently there are no parts of Northern California in the 'red-zone'.

This is info that the govt follows and believes. I am told by my cousin that if something goes wrong with the missile strike or there remains a 'high-risk' after the missile strike that the govt will ONLY give us a 26-28 minute warning! Obviously this is unacceptable.

I do have some info that I cannot share, but it is the most important info and you must pay attention closely! We are going to play a very simple 'read-between-the-lines' game here as I'm sure it will reveal the info I can't share. Please take notice that this info was confirmed to me this morning and isn't speculation. I swear to everyone out there, that this is quite possibly the most important thread on GLP!!!

Here it goes...

We all know that the Pentagon has listed 'Hydrazine' (rocket fuel) as being onboard the satellite and a major concern. They have also listed a second substance/material as being a major concern and that's 'Beryllium'. Now this is extremely odd as beryllium isn't a harmful material and is used in making shuttles & satellites, so why list it as a major concern?

Nuclear

Beryllium is used in nuclear weapon designsas the outer layer of the pit of the primary stage, surrounding the fissile material. It is a good pusher for implosion, and the best possible neutron reflector, reducing the critical mass needed for a fission chain reaction and increasing the proportion of fuel that fissions, while itself adding little mass to the weapon. It is a poor tamper because of its low mass, but this is unimportant in fusion-boosted fission weapons. As a light element with few electrons, the fission explosion completely ionizes it quickly, making it transparent to X-rays and letting the energy from a primary fission explosion escape for radiation implosion of a secondary fusion stage.

I have noticed that some news articles pertaining to the 'Beryllium' factor have been removed from the web. In particular one that was directly from an AirForce General who stated on 1/29/08 that the satellite could hit the USA. There are still articles and videos that show the Pentagon stating that the beryllium is a grave concern. It ONLY makes sense with the above pasted Wikipedia article.

Obviously the US Govt would NEVER admit to the beryllium being on-board for the above mentioned reason, as we have already gotten heat from Russia and China.

It also explains why they are taking a shot at the satellite WAY earlier than previously stated. The originally wanted to take a shot 'MOMENTS' before it hit the atmosphere so the debris would cause troubles in space. They are now planning on taking their first shot 10-14 days sooner than planned. I do believe it is however going to hit sooner than March (as they stated), but this is just a feeling from tracking it live online. There are a couple of great sites for tracking it. My favorite site was working beautifully, but now only works about 40% of the time (geez wonder why that is!). Make sure you sign up for both these sites and really explore them, as you can track and map 'visible passes' for your exact location. I have posted the links at the bottom of this thread.

Thousands of satellites have fallen from the sky, hell thousands have fallen from the sky in the past 5-years. NEVER has a single satellite gotten this type of attention, especially from the President of the United States (and other countries). The government is doing 'just enough' to make us aware that there 'may' be danger, but once again are keeping huge secrets from us. The bottom line is that there is a great chance for substantial loss of life and people need to know the truth. I beg of you to keep a close eye on this! I will post updates as soon as I get them.

Spy Satellite Not the First to Fall

As reported in the press, a Navy Aegis missile cruiser in the Pacific Ocean will try an unprecedented shoot-down of the out-of-control, school-bus-size U.S. spy satellite loaded with a toxic fuel as it begins its plunge to Earth. Marine General James E. Cartwright, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the Navy missile will be fired as the satellite re-enters the atmosphere and "has a reasonably high opportunity for success." The Navy has been developing -- and has successfully tested -- a ballistic missile intercept capability aboard several of its Aegis cruisers and destroyers.


Aegis is an advanced radar/fire-control system that was originally developed to destroy incoming anti-ship cruise missiles. The Navy has 22 cruisers and some 60 destroyers with the Aegis system and between 90 and 122 vertical-launch cells for surface-to-air and Tomahawk land-attack missiles. The Navy is upgrading several of these ships for the ballistic missile defense role.

The three previous spy satellites that fell to earth with nuclear reactors on board were Soviet Radar Ocean Reconnaissance Satellites (RORSAT). The RORSAT was part of the world's first satellite system orbited for ocean surveillance to detect warships on the high seas. The Soviet Union began tests of the system in 1967 and the first operational RORSATs went into orbit in 1974.

Two types of satellites were used in tandem: Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) satellites that were "passive" and sought to "lock on" to electronic signals emanating from ships, especially radar transmissions. The 18,400-pound EINT satellites became operational about 1970. Pairs of ELINT satellites were coordinated with a single RORSAT, guiding the latter to a suspected target ship. The 10,000-pound RORSAT could then use active radar to precisely locate and target Western warships. Later RORSAT satellites could send targeting data directly to missile-armed ships, surface ships, and submarines as well as to ground stations (as did the early RORSATs).

The power requirements for the RORSAT's radar was provided by a small nuclear reactor that carried some 110 pounds of enriched uranium (U235) to produce up to ten kilowatts of power for some 90 to 120 days in space. When the service life of these Kosmos-series RORSATs was complete the reactor section carrying the radioactive fuel and weighing about one ton was designed to be boosted into higher orbits -- more than 550 miles -- where they would circle the earth for more than 500 years and then cause no danger when they did come down and burn in the atmosphere. (They normally orbited at an altitude of about 130 miles.)

But three reactor sections malfunctioned and plunged into the atmosphere: Kosmos 954 in January 1978, with portions of the craft landing in Canada; Kosmos 1402 in February 1983, which fell into the Indian Ocean; and Kosmos 1990 in February 1989. Apparently no significant pieces of the last survived reentering the atmosphere.

No attempt was made to intercept those SPYSAT reactor sections when they plunged to earth.

Seems to me less a case of saving "2 football fields" of dangerous hydrazine vapour. Gasp - the terror! and more a case of we'll show them we can do it too!

Whats so hard to understand here it called follow the money. The Navy last week place an order with Raytheon for $1.4 Billion for 75 more Standard SM-3 Block IV's and 27 for Japan.

The Navy is asking for 19 CG(N)2000's, Missile Defense is the largest single item in the budget.

This will demonstrate to the Russians and Chinese that on call now we can intercept an ICBM in orbit before it re-enters and dispenses its warheads. This could put bach Russian and Chinese ICBM and SSBN misslile development a generation or more.

I miss some details in this article:


1) U.S. officials announced plans to use a single modified "S.M.-3 Standard Missile" launched from a group of three ships in the North Pacific to shoot down the failed re-entering U.S. American satellite "U.S.A. 193". They stated that their intention was to "reduce the danger to human beings" due to the possible release of the toxic hydrazine fuel carried onboard that satellite. But what spot on the globe exactly is threatened by this entering satellite, to justify such a Space-War-like measure? Without ANY concrete names of places, this whole thing sounds to me just as more unbearable "me too" whining from the U.S. Americans, because the Chinese recently and successfully shot down an obsolete satellite of their own (= U.S. American superiority complexes).


2) If the "S.M.-3 Standard Missile" is going to be used, then according to this Web-site here

the "S.M.-3 Standard Missile" has a speed of 9.600 kilometers / hour (6.000 miles / hour), but according to Wikipedia

the typical re-entry speed of spacecraft (at 60 kilometers altitude) is of 7,8 kilometers / second (= 28.080 kilometers / hour). But that alone is 2,925 times (= almost three times) faster than the "S.M.-3 Standard Missile" chosen to intercept it, and that doomed satellite is even to be shot down at 240 kilometres altitude = out there in Space, where it surely flies even faster than that! (The typical re-entry speed for example of large = non-evaporating meteorites is ~ of 50 kilometers / second, that's 180.000 kilometers / hour. I'll take my hat off to any country's Armed Forces who manage to hit those somehow directly, tip to tip - anyhow - and on very short notice too!)

Empirically, that almost begs the next question...: How does a turtle catch a rabbit? By accurately predicting its more or less linear flight path and putting itself in the hyperbolic target's way, although with scant hopes for a final precision approach? Could even work, but then how comes that a few days ago I still read in the news that it would take even MONTHS before the precise impact point of this uncontrolled satellite on the Earth's surface became predictable? How many "S.M.-3 Standard Missiles" exactly do the U.S.A. want to spend on this experiment? Or is this whole thing nothing but a validation of the anti-missile-missile concept, one of many different "Star Wars" weapon technologies?

3) For the Trekkie-minded poster "Nessuno": 3 arguments AGAINST plinking at satellites just for da kicks, unless it's absolutely imperative:

a) It contravenes the "Outer Space Treaty" (not that U.S. American politicians give a wet damn about any "treaties"...),
b) the debris from successful hits spreads out and becomes harder to track, while also presenting a hazard to other satellites and spacecraft,
and
c) the net result of a hit would be that you still had the same amount of mass at exactly the same speed going in roughly the same direction, but after one or two (or centuries of...) orbits it would all be coming down in lots of different places, depending on the drag coefficient of each fragment.

Don't you remember any caricatures about the constant rain of "Mir" space station parts here on the ground while it was STILL IN ORBIT ?

Let's also make clear that the satellite target is NOT nuclear powered. The danger is posed by a tank full of frozen rocket fuel which might survive reentry. As for the implied logic of "we didn't shoot down falling Soviet satellites during the Cold War, so we shouldn't shoot down our own satellite when it poses a danger now" well...wow. There are reasons not to think this is a good idea or warranted by the risk, but this version is weak.
