SURVIVALIST SCRAPBOOK: INTRO

Because I get a good amount of survivalist information, and it gets lost amongst the other postings here, today I am declaring a day for starting an easy to find assortment of information, urls, philosophy, explanations, and a place of others to place their helpful comments.

I have already signed up to distribute what I think is some very fine information on surviving the coming economic crash - how to live when your financial troubles tap you out. I'm just waiting until I get my own ducks in a row before I paste that on here. Hopefully, it will prove useful to people coming by the blog (or for those who know someone it CAN help) .. if nothing else, as in any good win-win, it will help ME to consolidate all this.

We often talk about sustainability - BUT helping humans survive is part of sustainability. Not being totally humancentric, I am not talking about articles that insist on us as merely the MOST important species that needs to survive obviously. But I have noted that during the past year lots of people have some pretty strange ideas about how to go about surviving in the tough times ahead, as they simply do not take into account such things as shortages in ammunition, as they grow hysterical about gun control. What possible good is a shotgun if you don't have any ammunition to shoot! So this is a survivalist scrapbook with a DIFFERENCE. It's going to be about how do you survive where you ARE, wherever you may find yourself.

There's PLENTY of good information on this blog already, and it's nifty to have the search box so you can find it, but I thought today is the day when I go to it full tilt and set this information aside. George Ure (peoplenomics.com, your first stop in the survivability game!) has special cut and clip sections now. This is a sane person's first $40 investment in their future. A subscription can easily pay for itself in a matter of DAYS. They also have a great book you can buy - How to survive on $10,000 a year.

So all this said (and there is plenty more TO say) - I hope you can get where I think 2008 is taking us as a species .. as Greg Palast quoted the elder as saying after the sinking of the Exxon Valdez:

We are all natives now

but how to live well, with a distinct change in our "lifestyle" is going to determine whether as a species we make it or no.

This is my attempt to HELP.

For inspiration, just go to CRAVE ..

(Credit: Neiman Marcus)

Luxury retailer Neiman Marcus sells this wacky $50,000 tent that hangs in a tree. No joke. I thought the only thing you hung in a tree when you were camping was the "bear bag" of food so that Yogi and Boo-boo couldn't get into your pic-a-nic basket.

Apparently not. The "Treetent," designed by Dutch designer Dre Wapenaar, looks kind of like something out of Sleeper, and did I mention it hangs in a tree and costs $50,000? It also comes with a 9-foot-diameter wooden floor (um, OK) and a "groovy round mattress" that sleeps two adults.

Mr. Wapenaar, Crave has a few questions for you.

One, how are you supposed to get the tent into the tree?

Two, how do you get into the tent once it's in the tree?

And three, how the heck are you supposed to, um, partake in activities that may shake the tent up a bit? Will you fall out of the tree? Come on, dude, if you say it "sleeps two adults" and mention a "groovy round mattress," you have to keep that in mind.

A great little website that seems to be aware REAL change, not green consumerism is the answer.

If they had a widgit, I'd post it on the blog - maybe you'd like to volunteer to help them out?

About This Site

This site is dedicated to individuals and families who live in North America and want to change their behavior to pollute less, waste less, and consume fewer resources. You will find practical advice that will result in less pollution or consumption of resources to a lesser or higher degree in many different areas. This site will not attempt to explain why change is necessary. If you want to know you need to go somewhere else and get informed. This site will also not explain how to make energy yourself. It is just not practical for most people.

Is this site for you?

If you came here because you are just curious but don`t really care about human influences on the environment please go here.

If you are not sure whether you pollute of not, answer these 20 questions and you will find out.

For all others, let us assume you arrived because you would like to live a life less damaging to the environment and need some ideas on how to do this best.

If you DO NOT live in North America, you are already polluting less. However, you are not perfect just because you do not live where the biggest polluters live. If you live in Europe, or a modern large city in any other country you are not polluting much less than the average North American and most certainly could improve how you impact the environment. You may discover that much of the advice here will apply to you as well.

Check the Practical Advice menu to the left to learn what you can do to pollute less.
