Important FLU and atypical antipsychotic information

Two things to keep your elderly parents away from: Being drugged at their elderly facility and the flu shot that has high levels of mercury, causes dementia and actually does not work which in some facilities are required.
If so, demand the flu shot without Thimerosal but not the live virus vaccine called "Flu mist". Eileen

Doctors Say Medication Is Overused in Dementia
By LAURIE TARKAN
June 24, 2008

Ramona Lamascola with her mother, Theresa Lamascola.
Ramona Lamascola thought she was losing her 88-year-old mother to dementia. Instead, she was losing her to overmedication.

Last fall her mother, Theresa Lamascola, of the Bronx, suffering from anxiety and confusion, was put on the antipsychotic drug Risperdal. When she had trouble walking, her daughter took her to another doctor — the younger Ms. Lamascola's own physician — who found that she had unrecognized hypothyroidism, a disorder that can contribute to dementia.

Mrs. Lamascola no longer takes antipsychotics.
Theresa Lamascola was moved to a nursing home to get these problems under control. But things only got worse. "My mother was screaming and out of it, drooling on herself and twitching," said Ms. Lamascola, a pediatric nurse. The psychiatrist in the nursing home stopped the Risperdal, which can cause twitching and vocal tics, and prescribed a sedative and two other antipsychotics.

"I knew the drugs were doing this to her," her daughter said. "I told him to stop the medications and stay away from Mom."

Not until yet another doctor took Mrs. Lamascola off the drugs did she begin to improve.

The use of antipsychotic drugs to tamp down the agitation, combative behavior and outbursts of dementia patients has soared, especially in the elderly. Sales of newer antipsychotics like Risperdal, Seroquel and Zyprexa totaled $13.1 billion in 2007, up from $4 billion in 2000, according to IMS Health, a health care information company.

Part of this increase can be traced to prescriptions in nursing homes. Researchers estimate that about a third of all nursing home patients have been given antipsychotic drugs.

The increases continue despite a drumbeat of bad publicity. A 2006 study of Alzheimer's patients found that for most patients, antipsychotics provided no significant improvement over placebos in treating aggression and delusions.

In 2005, the Food and Drug Administration ordered that the newer drugs carry a "black box" label warning of an increased risk of death. Last week, the F.D.A. required a similar warning on the labels of older antipsychotics.

The agency has not approved marketing of these drugs for older people with dementia, but they are commonly prescribed to these patients "off label." Several states are suing the top sellers of antipsychotics on charges of false and misleading marketing.

Ambre Morley, a spokeswoman for Janssen, the division of Johnson & Johnson that manufactures Risperdal, would not comment on the suits, but said: "As with any medication, the prescribing of a medication is up to a physician. We only promote our products for F.D.A.-approved indications."

Nevertheless, many doctors say misuse of the drugs is widespread. "These antipsychotics can be overused and abused," said Dr. Johnny Matson, a professor of psychology at Louisiana State University. "And there's a lot of abuse going on in a lot of these places."

Dr. William D. Smucker, a member of the American Medical Directors Association, a group of health professionals who work in nursing homes, agreed. Though the group encourages doctors to conduct a thorough assessment and prescribe antipsychotics only as a last resort, he said, "Many physicians are absent without leave in the nursing home and don't take an active role in the assessment of the patient."

Some nursing homes are trying a different approach, so-called environmental intervention. The strategies include reducing boredom, providing intellectual and physical stimulation, exercise, calming music, bringing in pets for therapy and improving how the staff approaches and talks to dementia patients.

At the Margaret Teitz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Queens, social workers do life reviews of patients to understand their interests, lifestyle and former occupations.

"I had a patient who used to be in fashion," said Nancy Goldwasser, the director of social services. "So we got her fabric samples. And she'd sit and look through the books, touch the fabric, and it would calm her."

But such approaches are time consuming, they do not help all patients, they can be prohibitively expensive and they will be more difficult to provide as Alzheimer's continues to increase.

"Our health care system isn't set up to address the mental, emotional and behavioral problems of the elderly," said Dr. Gary S. Moak, president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry.

Nursing homes are short staffed, and insurers do not generally pay for the attentive medical care and hands-on psychosocial therapy that advocates recommend. It is much easier to use sedatives and antipsychotics, despite their side effects.

The first generation of antipsychotics, like Haldol, carry a significant risk of repetitive movement disorders and sedation. Second-generation antipsychotics, also called atypicals, are more commonly prescribed because the risk of movement disorders is lower. But they, too, can cause sedation, and they contribute to weight gain and diabetes.

Used correctly, the drugs do have a role in treating some seriously demented patients, who may be incapacitated by paranoia or are self-destructive or violent. Taking the edge off the behavior can keep them safe and living at home, rather than in a nursing home.

If patients are prescribed an antipsychotic, it should be a very low dose for the shortest period necessary, said Dr. Dillip V. Jeste, a professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego.

It may take a few weeks or months to control behavior. In many cases, the patient can then be weaned off of the drugs or kept at a very low dose.

Some experts say another group of medications — antidementia drugs like Aricept, Exalon and Menamda — are underused. Research shows that 10 to 20 percent of Alzheimer's patients had noticeable positive responses to the drugs, and 40 percent more showed some cognitive improvement, even if it was not noticeable to an observer.
"Sometimes, it's enough to take the edge off the behavioral problems, so the family and patient can live with it and you don't expose people to much risk," said Dr. Gary J. Kennedy, director of geriatric psychiatry at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.

Other experts cite a lack of research backing these drugs for behavioral problems.

If patients begin showing behavioral symptoms of dementia, doctors said, they should have complete medical and psychiatric workups first, especially if symptoms develop suddenly.

"Just because someone is 95 does not mean one should not do a workup, especially if she's been healthy," Dr. Kennedy said.

Common causes of the symptoms include ministrokes, reparable brain hemorrhage from a mild bump on the head, hypothyroidism, dehydration, malnourishment, depression and sleep disorders.

Some doctors point out that simply paying attention to a nursing home patient can ease dementia symptoms. They note that in randomized trials of antipsychotic drugs for dementia, 30 to 60 percent of patients in the placebo groups improved.

"That's mind boggling," Dr. Jeste said. "These severely demented patients are not responding to the power of suggestion. They're responding to the attention they get when they participate in a clinical trial.

"They receive both T.L.C. and good general medical and humane care, which they did not receive until now. That's a sad commentary on the way we treat dementia patients."

To family members looking at a nursing home for an aging parent, experts recommend seeking out homes with low staff turnover, a high ratio of staff members to patients, and programs with psychosocial components.

The Medicare Web site has basic information on individual homes at www.medicare.gov/NHcompare. The National Citizens' Coalition for Nursing Home Reform, at www.nccnhr.org, offers a consumer guide to choosing a nursing home.

If medications are necessary, a family member should communicate with the prescribing doctor, learn the goal of each medication and be involved in making the decision.

Dr. Moak, of the psychiatry association, emphasized seeking out the doctor. Family members, he said, "often speak through the nursing staff, and that's a huge mistake."

Family members who are not convinced that a relative is receiving the best care should get a second opinion, as Ramona Lamascola did.

The physician she consulted, Dr. Kennedy of Montefiore, stopped her mother's antipsychotics and sedatives and prescribed Aricept.

"It's not clear whether it was getting her hypothyroid and other medical issues finally under control or getting rid of the offending medications," he said. "But she had a miraculous turnaround."

Theresa Lamascola still has dementia, but she went from confinement in a wheelchair — unable to sit still and screaming out in fear — to being able to walk with help, sit peacefully, have some memory and ability to communicate, understand subtleties of conversations and even make jokes.

Or, as her daughter put it, "I got my mother back."

US Navy research lab under microscope in Indonesia

JAKARTA (AFP) — The future of a major US Navy research laboratory in Indonesia is in doubt amid allegations, dismissed as "crazy" by US diplomats, of espionage and secret experiments.

Negotiations between Washington and Jakarta over the renewal of the operating contract of US Naval Medical Research Unit-2, or Namru-2, have stalled over a range of issues including diplomatic immunity for its US staff.

Established in Indonesia in 1970 and charged with researching infectious diseases of military importance, the facility employs 19 Americans and more than 100 Indonesians and is based in Indonesian health ministry grounds.

Its operations have attracted suspicion from a number of quarters in the world's largest Muslim country, from anti-US religious hardliners to outspoken Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari and Defence Minister Juwono Sudarsono.

"We'll conduct some checks on their presence in Indonesia," Vice President Jusuf Kalla said after Friday prayers last week.

Supari, whose ministry has worked with the US laboratory on projects including malaria research and bird flu early warning systems, has thrown fuel on to the diplomatic fire.

"Until today there have been no significantly useful results for the people (from Namru-2's research)," she said last month.

"Problems with contagious diseases such as malaria and dengue fever are still relatively the same... My people ask me why is there a health laboratory working together with a foreign military?"

Some parliamentarians have demanded the laboratory's operating contract, which expired in 2005, be torn up and its facilities taken over by Jakarta.

Parliamentary foreign affairs commissioner Mutamimul Ula called Thursday for an "investigation into allegations that Namru-2 staffers were involved in intelligence operations."

"There is this flavour of intelligence activities... This can't be avoided in the eyes of the public. It is part of the defence organism of a foreign country," Ula said.

The controversy and the delays in the renewal of the contract appear to be causing a degree of angst among US officials in the departments of health and state, reflecting the importance Washington attaches to the facility.

Namru-2 has been a major point of US-Indonesian cooperation over the years, including times when relations over other issues were strained. US President George W. Bush mentioned the facility in a joint statement with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when he visited Jakarta in 2006.

Apparently stung by the latest whirlwind of allegations, some of which stretch back several years, the US embassy has issued a statement entitled "The Truth About Namru-2."

"There's been rumours over the last 10 years that we had to respond to," US embassy deputy chief of mission John A. Heffern told AFP.

"It's just crazy," he said of the allegations of spying and secret experiments, adding that Namru-2 was "totally unclassified, totally transparent."

"If the Indonesian ministry of health wants the raw data, it's totally open to them," he said.

"Hopefully we will resume our negotiations. This doesn't help."

Sticking points in the negotiations have included the US's insistence that all American staff at the laboratory be given diplomatic immunity.

Complicating matters is a separate dispute between Washington and Jakarta over bird flu samples.

Jakarta is insisting on "the recognition of sovereign rights of states over their biological resources," and fears the flu samples will be used by foreign companies to make vaccines, which will be too expensive for Indonesians.

US officials have slammed the position, with US Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt recently stressing the importance of international cooperation to tackle the bird flu threat.

"The United States has very important relationships here in Indonesia, that involve joint work in laboratories in various levels of research, and we have pledged to continue that," Leavitt said after meeting Yudhoyono last month.

Indonesia has the highest number of human bird flu victims, with 108 people known to have died in the sprawling archipelago from the disease.

The World Health Organisation, which has designated Namru-2 as a Collaborating Centre on disease research, has warned that Indonesia is putting its own population in danger by failing to share its samples.

DoD to 'augment civilian law' during pandemic or bioterror attack --By Lori Price, www.legitgov.org

Is Bush is getting ready to play the Bioterror Card? The GOP cannot steal an inevitable Democratic landslide in November 2008. Will the Bush regime continue its illegitimate rule and empire by implementing a full-blown police state, in the aftermath of an avian flu pandemic or (Bush-engendered) bioterror attack?

DoD to carry out 'military missions' during pandemic, WMD attack By Lori Price 23 Oct 2007 On Thursday, the Bush administration issued a directive which 'establishes a National Strategy for Public Health and Medical Preparedness (Strategy), which builds upon principles set forth in Biodefense for the 21st Century (April 2004) and will transform our national approach to protecting the health of the American people against [with] all disasters.' HOMELAND SECURITY PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE/HSPD-21 states that within one year of the directive's date, 'the Secretaries of Health and Human Services and Defense, in coordination with the Secretaries of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security, shall establish an academic Joint Program for Disaster Medicine and Public Health housed at a National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences... Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Defense authorities will be used to carry out respective civilian and military missions within this joint program.'

From the 'people' who brought you the response to Hurricane Katrina (blown levees): US military begins planning for avian flu pandemic 10 May 2007 The US military has begun to plan for a possible avian flu pandemic that could kill as many as three million people in the United States in as little as six weeks, a Pentagon planning document said. The Defense Department's "Implementation Plan for Pandemic Influenza," which was posted Wednesday on a Pentagon website, lays out guidelines and planning assumptions for US military services and combatant commands. Possible scenarios include US troops being called in to put down riots, guard pharmaceutical plants and shipments, and help restrict the movement of people inside the country and across its borders. "When directed by the president, DoD will provide support to civil authorities in the event of a civil disturbance," the document said. "DoD will augment civilian law enforcement efforts to restore and maintain order in accordance with existing statutes." The military also may assist civil authorities in "isolating and/or quarantining groups of people in order to minimize [foment] the spread of disease during an influenza pandemic," it said. [Bye bye, Posse Comitatus! And suddenly, the US is going to control its borders? Gag me with a chainsaw! This newfound 'border control' ability is to keep people from *leaving* the US. KBR's $385M detention center contract will be expanded and renewed.]

CDC wants to test 107 air passengers; TB patient stayed in NYC 31 May 2007 Health officials around the world were scrambling Wednesday to find about 80 air passengers who sat near a man who spent three days in a New York City hospital with a form of tuberculosis so dangerous he is under the first U.S. government-ordered quarantine since 1963. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Julie Gerberding said Wednesday that the CDC is working closely with airlines to find passengers who may have been exposed to the rare, dangerous strain. Health officials in France said they have asked Air France-KLM for passenger lists, and the Italian Health Ministry said it is tracing the man's movements. [Did the US allow the TB-infected man to travel so that a media-engendered 'outcry' for safety would 'force all international departures heading to the U.S. to submit information about all the passengers aboard the plane prior to take off?' See: DHS wants early passenger info 14 Jul 2006 The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has submitted a proposal that will force all international departures heading to the U.S. to submit information about all the passengers aboard the plane prior to take off. Through the new plan, airlines could send the entire list of information on the flight and the people onboard up to 60 minutes before departure or through a constant relay system as passengers check in... The new proposals may also end the practice of international airlines having to screen their passengers against governmental "no fly" lists during check-in or boarding. Privacy laws in the European Union (EU) have prevented similar legislation being introduced before. In May, the highest court in the EU struck down a proposal to allow airlines to provide the DHS with extensive passenger information, such as fare payment details, phone numbers, and addresses. This directive is currently being redrafted.]

Report Says TSA Violated Privacy Law --Passengers Weren't Told That Brokers Provided Data to Screening Program in '04 22 Dec 2006 Secure Flight, the U.S. government's stalled program to screen domestic air passengers against terrorism watch lists, violated federal law during a crucial test phase, according to a report to be issued today by the Homeland Security Department's privacy office... TSA Administrator Kip Hawley said that he supports the use of Secure Flight and that his agency is working closely with other government officials to ensure it protects privacy. "We are working in a transparent way," Hawley said, adding that the agency's "challenging" goal is to roll out the program in 2008.

Secret DHS Agreement to Share Passenger Data in Violation of Agreements Is Confirmed (ACLU) 25 Apr 2006 The text of a secret agreement that the Department of Homeland Security executed with the Centers for Disease Control to share airline passenger data confirms...that the U.S. government is distributing information that it explicitly promised it would not share... In 2003, the United States and the European Union reached an agreement under which the EU would share Passenger Name Record (PNR) data with the U.S., despite the lack of privacy laws in the United States adequate to ensure Europeans' privacy. In return, DHS agreed that the passenger data would not be used for any purpose other than preventing acts of terrorism or other serious crimes. It is now clear that DHS did not abide by that agreement.]

Canadian authorities locate 16 of 28 passengers sought from TB exposure flight 30 May 2007 Public health officials in the United States and Canada revealed Wednesday they have narrowed down to roughly 70 to 80 the number of people on two recent transatlantic flights who were seated in close proximity to a man infected with a rare and potentially deadly form of tuberculosis. Canadian health authorities are trying to find anyone who sat in Row 12 - plus the two rows ahead and behind - of Czech Airline flight 0104 to Montreal from Prague on May 24. The man, who is infected with extensively drug resistant tuberculosis or XDR-TB, was seated in 12 C.

TB patient's father-in-law works at CDC lab --Infected man ID'd, taken to Denver hospital; others on 2 flights sought 31 May 2007 The father-in-law of the tuberculosis patient under the first federal quarantine since 1963 works as a microbiologist at a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory that studies TB and other bacterial infections. Bob Cooksey said he gave his 31-year-old son-in-law, attorney Andrew Speaker, "fatherly advice" [!] when he learned he contracted the disease.

Authorities seeking those on flight 29 May 2007 A man with a rare and exceptionally dangerous form of tuberculosis has been placed in quarantine by the U.S. government [!] after possibly exposing passengers and crew on two trans-Atlantic flights earlier this month, health officials said Tuesday. The infected man flew from Atlanta to Paris on May 12 aboard Air France Flight 385. He returned to North America on May 24 aboard Czech Air Flight 104 from Prague to Montreal. The man then drove into the United States. He cooperated with authorities after learning he had an unusually dangerous form of TB. He voluntarily went to a hospital and is not facing prosecution, officials said.

U.S. Government Issues a Quarantine Order --CDC Order is First Since 1963 29 May 2007 A man with a rare and exceptionally dangerous form of tuberculosis has been placed in quarantine by the U.S. government after possibly exposing passengers and crew on two trans-Atlantic flights earlier this month, health officials said Tuesday. This marks the first time since 1963 that the government issued a quarantine order. The last such order was to quarantine a patient with smallpox, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Report: National Guard May Be Needed to Enforce Quarantine in Flu Pandemic 09 May 2007 Military and civilian health facilities will be overwhelmed if a nationwide flu pandemic hits the United States, and the National Guard may have to be called out to provide medical help and even enforce a quarantine, the Defense Department warned in a report released Wednesday. ...The 86-page report report is dated August 2006 and titled "The Department of Defense Implementation Plan for Pandemic Influenza." According to the report, in the event of a pandemic or a [Bush-engendred] bioterror attack, the Defense Department may be called by the president to assist civilian authorities in minimizing the spread of disease by placing restrictions on interstate transportation.

Scientists Recreate 1918 Flu and See Parallels to Bird Flu --In 2005, U.S. Army scientists reconstructed Spanish flu virus by extracting genetic fragments from the bodies of victims exhumed from the Alaskan permafrost. 18 Jan 2007 Scientists infected monkeys with a virus that caused the 1918-19 influenza pandemic and said in the Jan. 18 issue of the journal Nature that it caused an illness like that suffered by patients with the bird flu now spreading in Asia.

Killer flu recreated in the lab 07 Oct 2004 UK Scientists have shown that tiny changes to modern flu viruses could render them as deadly as the 1918 strain which killed millions. A US team added two genes from a sample of the 1918 virus to a modern strain known to have no effect on mice. Animals exposed to this composite were dying within days of symptoms similar to those found in human victims of the 1918 pandemic.

KBR awarded $385M Homeland Security contract for U.S. detention centers 24 Jan 2006 KBR, the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton Co., said Tuesday it has been awarded a contingency contract from the Department of Homeland Security to supports its Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in the event of an emergency. The maximum total value of the contract is $385 million and consists of a 1-year base period with four 1-year options. The contract, which is effective immediately, provides for establishing temporary detention and processing capabilities to expand existing ICE Detention and Removal Operations Program facilities in the event of an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs, KBR said. The contract may also provide migrant detention support to other government organizations in the event of an immigration emergency, as well as the development of a plan to react to a national emergency, such as a natural disaster, the company said.

OLDIES FROM THE TIME CAPSULE UPDATED: Avian flu
When researchers decided to exhume bodies of victims from the 1918 pandemic, a wise mind would assume it won't be long before we have another great plague. That was back in 1997. The avian flu made its appearance in 1997 too. Co-incidence? No there were other less publicized missions to Alaska in the 1950's as well. And wasn't the next great flu plague an avian flu in 1957 and then 1968.

The recent edition of the medical journal The Lancet has stated that the 1918 virus appeared to be "an entirely avian-like" flu that adapted to humans and shares eerie similarities with the H5N1 strain that swept Asia . However, where we are fortunate is that three of the genes had to be replicated. Obviously they weren't entirely successful.

The United States will spend another US$4-billion on the flu-fighting drug Tamiflu to boost coverage to 20 million people, from 4.3 million.

The previous posting about Tamiflu reveals that Donald Rumsfeld was the CEO of Gilead the maker of Tamiflu. The Dept. of Defense has control of the 1918 replication that is posted on the internent site of the CDC in minute detail. Mr. Rumsfeld is the Secretary of Defense.

We tolerate conflicts of interest for some reason. If they get their sequencing right, we'll see the great pandemic that has been forcasted just like in the 1950's.

Scientists who have reconstructed the deadly 1918 Spanish flu virus using tiny pieces of genes taken from the lung tissue of victims who died 87 years ago believe the virus was a pure bird flu virus -- like the "avian" flu now spreading in Southeast Asia, but completely unlike most flus that infect humans.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta is holding the reconstructed virus and officials say they will not release it for study in other labs, at least in the short term. But the virus sequences will be available in GenBank, a public online archive of genetic information. "A molecular biologist with the facilities and the skills could regenerate that virus anywhere," said University of Ottawa virologist Earl Brown.

"It is certainly possible that if you had the appropriate skills you could do that," Dr. Taubenberger said in an interview. But he said sequences for both the Ebola and Marburg viruses, which cause hemorrhagic fever, are also on GenBank. The 1918 virus contains eight gene segments, five of which had already been reported. The remaining three -- the biggest pieces that together make up more than half of the 1918 flu strain -- bear striking similarities to those of flu viruses found only in birds.
In the world's last two pandemics, the Asian flu in 1957 and the Hong Kong flu in 1968, a bird flu is believed to have swapped genes with a human flu before morphing into a new virus to which people had no immunity.
Avian flu is looking scarily like 1918 Spanish flu pandemic: Reconstructed bug shows similarities to current strain

I think you're getting the picture.

The sufferers were "tortured" by the virus, as it consumed their life force. Victims bled from their eyes, mouth, nose and ears. Skin, starved of oxygen turned blue, so that doctors were unable to distinguish between Europeans and Afro-Americans.
Now, in October 2005, scientists claim they have found that the avian flu that's emerging in the Far East shares some of the same genetic characteristics as the flu virus that caused the 1918 pandemic.

Dr Jeffrey Taubenberger

The Next Pandemic --THE SCRIPT--
There had been prior expeditions to Alaska in the 1950's to exhume frozen bodies of victims of the 1918 flu with the attempt to culture the virus.

In the 1950's influenza viruses could be cultured and characterized in the laboratory, but molecular genetic analysis like we're doing now was not possible.

"Scientific medicine has taken credit it does not deserve for some advances in health. Most people believe that victory over the infectious diseases of the last century came with the invention of immunizations. In fact, cholera, typhoid, tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough, etc, were in decline before vaccines for them became available – the result of better methods of sanitation, sewage disposal, and distribution of food and water." ~ Dr. Andrew Weil, Health and Healing

A Canadian comedy troop did a very funny bit on flu shots a while ago. They listed the ingredients in the typical flu shot, as they put them in a blender. During the bit they also polled people "on the street" and asked them some pretty basic questions about flu shots. Most people couldn’t list the ingredients. The level of ignorance displayed made for great comedy. Funny stuff!

Which brings me to the question posed by this essay – why do people get those shots?

The Upside of Vaccinations – Dubious?

A good bit of freely-available information paints a rather cautionary and contrary-to-mainstream-orthodoxy picture of vaccinations. According to Vaccination Debate, a private website based in Australia, there is little, if any data-based support for the belief that vaccination is as important as it is often portrayed to be. This is evident when one examines the timing between the introduction of most vaccines and the decrease in death rates for the diseases they supposedly fight. While there are several examples of this phenomenon, I’ll only include a couple below; note that year is plotted on the X-axis.

I’m neither an epidemiologist nor an immunologist, but this data – even though taken from Australia – seems instructive on a number of levels. Notice when the vaccine was deployed. Contrast that with the slope of the curve. It seems pretty obvious that vaccination had little, if any, effect on death rate. Then again, that’s exactly what Dr. Weil says in the quote that heads this essay above. He’s far from alone; but wait, there’s more.

Andrew Saul, over at DoctorYourself.com stated in a recent newsletter:

"There is plentiful evidence that vaccinations are less than beneficial. The venerable British Anti-Vaccination League (and, incidentally, George Bernard Shaw) was vociferously against them. Homeopathic medical writers frequently include passages in their texts on how to treat vaccinosis, or the side-effects of vaccinations (Clarke, 1972). Certainly the U.S. Government cannot say without qualification that shots are either safe or essential. After all, this is what was said about the infamous Swine Flu vaccine in a 1976 FDA Consumer Memo in my possession: ‘Some minor side effects – tenderness in the arm, low fever, tiredness – will occur in less than 4% of (vaccinated) adults. Serious reactions from flu vaccines are very rare.’ So much for blanket claims of safety. Many persons well remember the very numerous and very serious side effects of Swine Flu vaccine that forced the federal immunization program to a halt." [Boldface added.]

Dr. Joseph Mercola, over at Mercola.com asks in a not-so-recent piece:

Do you want any of the following vaccine constituents in YOUR bloodstream?

  • Ethylene glycol (antifreeze)
  • Phenol, also known as carbolic acid (this is used as a disinfectant, dye)
  • Formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing agent
  • Aluminum, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease and seizures and also cancer producing in laboratory mice (it is used as an additive to promote antibody response)
  • Thimerosal (a mercury disinfectant/preservative) can result in brain injury and autoimmune disease
  • Neomycin and Streptomycin (used as antibiotics) have caused allergic reaction in some people.

Vaccines are also grown and strained through animal or human tissue like monkey kidney tissue, chicken embryo, embryonic guinea pig cells, calf serum, and human diploid cells (the dissected organs of aborted human fetuses as in the case of rubella, hepatitis A, and chickenpox vaccines).

That thimerosal has been banned in several countries while continuing to be used, and in fact, promoted by some doctors’ groups in the U.S. is also rather interesting.

From NewsTarget, we have a piece that speaks to the "modest benefit" one can expect from getting a flu shot:

"In their review of 71 studies, Dr. Daniela Rivetti of the public health department of Asti, Italy, and colleagues found that flu shots prevented 45 percent of flu-like illnesses, hospital admissions and flu-related deaths among nursing home and long-term care patients. Flu vaccinations prevented only 25 percent of these outcomes in older adults still living in the community."

NewsTarget also recently reported on the results of a new British Medical Journal analysis, which showed why, "Flu Shots are Virtually Worthless." That article states:

"Dr. Tom Jefferson, coordinator of the Cochrane Vaccines Field in Rome, Italy, conducted an extensive review of previous studies on the effectiveness of inactivated [dead virus] flu vaccines on hospital admissions, death rates and time off work."

Dr. Jefferson reports that while vaccine recommendations have actually increased in recent years, the data shows that they are largely ineffective in the populations for which they are most highly recommended. Not surprisingly, others have written about this report, as well.

Even the more mainstream media reported that flu shots were "much ado about nothing." Interestingly, the same Dr. Jefferson as quoted by NewsTarget was quoted in an article originally linked (but not freely-available) by Medline. I found the article on HealthCentral.com, entitled "Study Questions Value of Flu Shots" via another source. That article states:

"We've got an exaggerated expectation of what vaccines can actually do," said study author Dr. Tom Jefferson. ... "I'm hoping American and European taxpayers will be alerted and will start asking questions."

The article goes on to say:

"Overall, Jefferson concluded, influenza vaccines have little or no effect on many influenza campaign objectives, such as hospital stay, time off work, or death from influenza and its complications." [Emphasis added.]

After all this information, there can be little doubt that the usefulness of flu shots is, at very least, questionable. That is the objective data about the shot itself. Yet the establishment continues to push them. Since I do not readily subscribe to the paradigm of random evil in people, there must be some reason, other than ignorance, that drives those with power and influence to support widespread flu shots for the US population.

The Downside of Vaccinations – Obvious?

The FDA recommends vaccinations. Given my impression of that organization, their recommendation alone is almost tantamount to a suggestion to the contrary. The socialist paradigm by which the FDA operates virtually guarantees that its decisions won’t be in the best interest of "the customer." As Manuel Lora and I said in that previous column:

"The difference, however, between the market and the state is that the latter lacks a negative feedback mechanism. In the market, if a company makes a mistake, it can be severely punished by the customers. With the government, no such thing happens. When the FDA makes a mistake, it doesn't go away or downsize; it cannot be boycotted or legally bypassed; one cannot seek alternate quality control and certification systems. In fact, we are perpetually tied to the FDA and any state agency through taxation. The state has no incentive to be more effective by controlling cost or increasing quality because it can always rely on a constant influx of funds."

We are virtually assured that even demonstrably bad decisions will not be punished, because externalization of risk is one inevitable outcome of a coercive state.

The CDC advises everyone to get a shot, including both the young and the old. Yet I cannot find much information that backs this need up with data. Medline showed some positive data about flu shots and their effectiveness. An article entitled, "Studies Support Flu Vaccine’s Effectiveness" states:

"Using surveillance data, the researchers predicted what the peak week of influenza season would be. They also had parents answer questionnaires about what symptoms, if any, they and their children were experiencing, what medications they had purchased, and any doctor visits, missed school or work days they had logged."

The article goes on to say:

"The team found a significant reduction in influenza-like illnesses in both adults and children from households with a vaccinated child compared to the non-vaccinated households. The researchers also saw significantly fewer numbers of medical office visits, lowered use of prescription and over-the-counter medications and a reduction in missed school days by elementary and high-school children in the vaccinated households."

Certainly this is a positive recommendation, but a lukewarm one at best, given the contrary data presented by The Lancet, et al. Not even all mainstream news sources paint a rosy picture, as evidenced by "Universal Flu Shots Urged" published on-line a few years back in by the National Women’s Health Resource Center. That article states:

"The rationale for universal vaccination comes from the concept of ‘herd immunity,’ which posits that with more people vaccinated, less overall virus circulates and people, especially frail people, have less chance of contracting the illness."

The article goes on to say:

"But this argument comes on the heels of a study in The Lancet that showed that even with people for whom the vaccine is most recommended (the elderly), protection can be as low as 30 percent." [Boldface added.]

So while one can find some positive data from some of the mainstream, there exists a not insignificant amount of data from both the mainstream (e.g., The Lancet) and the not-so-mainstream (e.g., Dr. Mercola) that question the usefulness and efficacy of flu shots. At best it appears that one is opting to inject a foreign substance with likely only 25–45% effectiveness while hoping that no side-effects occur. (Anyone care to pay for the chance to play Russian roulette?)

Another researcher in the article linked from HealthCentral.com says, "My message is definitely go out there and get the flu vaccine if you're an older individual."

But the CDC also reports that only 36,000 people die from the infection each year. Contrast that number with this little tidbit, found at Medical News Today:

"An average of 195,000 people in the USA died due to potentially preventable, in-hospital medical errors in each of the years 2000, 2001 and 2002, according to a new study of 37 million patient records that was released today by HealthGrades, the healthcare quality company."

It appears pretty clear that anything one can do to stay out of the hospital is a good first step. I still can’t find any reason to think vaccinations are a critical component of a healthy lifestyle, unless we conclude that something is better than nothing. That doesn’t sound like an effective immunization strategy.

Using the numbers above we see that over five times as many people will die because they happen to be in the hospital and are unlucky enough to experience a preventable error than will die from getting the flu, if the vaccine itself doesn’t put them in the hospital. Seems to me your chances are better on your own anyway, particularly given the performance data.

According to Mercola the myths about vaccination have more efficacy than the vaccines themselves. For example:

Myth: Vaccines are safe.

Truth: "Vaccination causes significant death and disability at an astounding personal and financial cost to uninformed families."

Myth: Vaccines are effective.

Truth: "Evidence suggests that vaccination is an unreliable means of preventing disease."

Myth: Vaccines are responsible for the low incidence of disease in the US.

Truth: "It is unclear what impact, if any, that vaccines had on 19th and 20th century infectious disease declines." (The graphs above reflect this truth.)

Until these types of myths are exposed for what they are – over-statements at best, lies at worst – people will, I suspect, continue to line up for flu shots and other vaccinations. Worse yet, many will opt for voluntary vaccinations such as HPV, which is also unwise in my view. The bulk of this behavior is due to heavy propagandization from agents of the State. (Even as reports of deaths from vaccine side-effects start to roll in, Merck continues to lobby.) Why does this occur? It occurs for the same old reasons. People continue to use the power of the State to enrich themselves.

The Promotion of Vaccinations – Profitable?

According to Barbara Fisher, who served for ten years on the US National Vaccine Advisory Committee:

"We have bad science and bad medicine translated into law to ensure that vaccine manufacturers make big profits, that career bureaucrats at the Public Health Service meet the mass vaccination goals promised to politicians funding their budgets, and pediatricians have a steady flow of patients…As the drug companies have often stated in meetings I have attended, if a vaccine they produce is not mandated to be used on a mass basis, they do not recoup their R&D costs and do not make the profit they want. In the medical literature official studies of vaccine risk are published purportedly proving there is no cause and effect. What the reader does not know is that often the studies have been designed and conducted by physicians who sit on vaccine policy-making committees at the Centers for Disease Control…some of whom receive money from vaccine manufacturers for their universities and for testifying as expert witnesses in vaccine-injury cases. And others are federal employees with an eye on career advancement within HHS and a future job with a vaccine manufacturer after retirement from public service. Many of these same physicians sit on the peer review boards of the major medical journals such as Pediatrics and JAMA, where they refuse space for studies or letters from the few brave physicians who dare to challenge their assertions that there is no cause and effect."

From my own experience in regulated medical device research and development, I know that it is not uncommon for a manufacturer of diagnostic tests to decide which tests to develop with an understanding (or in fact, an expectation) that the State will mandate the use of the new tests, and thereby furnish the manufacturer with a steady stream of income. And let us be clear, this behavior is not unethical, it is good business planning! (Now if one lobbies on one end while developing items to sell as a result of that lobbying on the other, well…) Still, this behavior is the inevitable result of statist policies – regulation, mandates, etc. – distorting the market.

For another – if unrelated to vaccinations – example of the interplay that exists between state control and misplaced incentives, one need only gaze upon this tidbit: the AMA is raking in about $70 million per year on licensing CPT codes. CPT codes – current procedural terminology – are explained in a Wiki entry which states:

"The CPT code set accurately describes medical, surgical, and diagnostic services and is designed to communicate uniform information about medical services and procedures between physicians, coders, patients, accreditation organizations, and payers for administrative, financial, and analytical purposes."

The AMA holds a copyright on the codes and licenses their use.

Basically, the scam works like this. The CPT system is mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and HIPAA, and the data for it appears in the Federal Register. In order to associate the Relative Value Unit (RVU) – the common scale by which practically all physician services are measured – with CPT codes, a fee must be paid to the AMA. In other words, the State requires that the CPT system be used, and the AMA scoops up the profits as a direct result. (Nice work if you can get it.)

By controlling access to the market, agents of the State simultaneously drive the available offerings down and profits – for a select few – up. Now certainly this all has little to do with flu shots specifically, but misplaced statist incentives always lead to these types of outcomes. This is but one example.

Further down the text found at the CPT code citation above, under the heading, "CDC Refuses to Deny Conflict of Interest on Vaccine Policy Committee," we find that a doctor was giving "pro-vaccination" lectures in exchange for money, money supplied by Merck, a vaccine vendor. (What a surprise.) If Merck and the CDC can be asked directly if such an arrangement is a conflict of interest, which they were, and they refuse to answer that question, which they did, I suspect we have all the answer we need.

Conclusion

We’ve uncovered yet another place where data, logic, and common sense go directly against the information spit out by the agents of the State. (Really, it wasn’t that hard.) Of course this discovery is not surprising, since basic logic virtually guarantees that the coercive powers of the State will always be used to enrich some at the expense of others. History is an unerring teacher in this regard. As Bastiat so aptly put it, "The State is that great fictitious entity by which everyone seeks to live at the expense of everyone else." Indeed.

I’m not qualified to advise anyone about their health choices. The reader is invited to decide for himself. It just strikes me as a little strange and a little hazardous for anyone to place too many of these decisions in the hands of the State or more accurately, its agents, particularly for so little obvious benefit.

This is particularly true when it appears that very little about your or my health and wellness drives many, if not most, of their actions.

To MSM about 'bird flu'--SHUT UP!
by Disclosure staff
Disclosure NewsMagazine Monthly

October 19, 2005

The ridiculousness of this past week’s rampant coverage of the “avian flu” (“bird flu,” H5N1, etc.) has finally annoyed the staff of Disclosure to the point that we determined an opinion column about this subject is now imperative.

For some reason, all major mainstream media (MSM), at the end of their incessant coverage of the horrors following hurricanes Katrina and Rita, determined that all of a sudden the subject du jour would become avian flu. One after another, all MSM outlets were spouting about this flu, what everybody should do to “prepare,” and what our president Shrub (Bush minor) was intent upon doing should there be a pandemic in the U.S.

What is NOT being reported are the basic facts about H5N1, what people can really do to prepare, and, generally, what the “flu” basically is.

(Note: Nothing in the following column is meant to be construed as medical advice and should not be taken so, but only as guidelines learned from experience and culled from common-sense sources.)

What is the flu?

An “influenza” is a viral infection that has a relatively short lifespan and causes problems for its victim in the form of several minor effects (chills, high fever, aches and pains, headaches, sore throat, mucosal irritation). These actual “flu” conditions may make someone feel like they want to die, but the influenza virus generally does not kill a person—nor an animal.

What kills are the side-effects that stem from these conditions, if people don’t take care of themselves while suffering from this virus. These are primarily bacterial (and sometimes fungal, other viral and even parasitic) infections that set in during the lowered immune condition a person experiences when suffering a flu.

Ordinarily, these secondary infections are pneumonia and/or a range of gastrointestinal problems (parasites) that cause diarrhea, which, with attendant dehydration, can be fatal.

When animals get a flu, if they die at all, they usually die from parasitic or lung infections. When humans get a flu, if they die at all, it’s usually from pneumonia or dehydration from diarrhea.

Health professionals love to attribute human deaths from “the flu” to the flu, not to the secondary, opportunistic infections; it’s too much work to find out exactly which bacteria or parasite dealt the fatal blow. In other words, it’s easier for them when filling out paperwork.

The flu doesn't kill you

The fact is that “the flu” doesn’t kill. So what, say you detractors, was all this fuss about the “Spanish flu” epidemic in 1918? Didn’t practically everybody in great-grandpa’s family (with the exception, of course, of great-grandpa) die from that?

No. There are two reasons why the “Spanish flu” (which was misnamed because of the inaccurate premise that it originated in Spain—more on that in a minute) killed so many people, and they are very, very simple—the outbreak of this flu came on the heels of two new treatments: aspirin, and a “flu vaccine.”

Careful research by medical investigators over the years has uncovered that the 1918 flu actually had a “ground zero” of Fort Riley, Kansas (specifically Camp Funston, where quarantined soldiers were eventually kept). This was the military base where the soldiers, having been brought back from duty in Spain and other locales after World War I, were taken and were subject to new inoculations that were being mandated for soldiers before release into the general populace. (Spain was a relatively neutral country in the war, and had no compunction against publishing ongoing information about the spread of this flu, causing it to be cause “Spanish flu” by default and misperception.)

These inoculations were a new practice; previous versions of “the flu” had made the rounds and done their damage; this was the first time a “vaccine” had been developed that would hopefully stave off the spread of the virus.

Taking the 'vaccine' home

These boys took themselves and the germs with which they were inoculated home with them and spread a live (and probably mutated) version of the virus to their friends and family. When people started getting sick, others ran out and received the vaccine in hopes that they wouldn’t be next.

They were.

In fact, records indicate that the people who didn’t get vaccinated (poor people who couldn’t afford it, and then, when vaccinations were being considered “essential” and basically given without cost, those with some intellect who refused to be inoculated) were the ones who survived the “epidemic.”

Aspirin: bad idea

Secondly, the development of salicylic acid (aspirin) came along at the same time. This product was widely available and was recommended by physicians in order to control the fever that came along with the flu. In taking it, peoples’ fevers went down and aches and pains subsided, but they died anyway. Why?

This is because any influenza virus is naturally attacked by the body’s own defenses. This “attack” is marked by a high fever, a sign that your body is doing what it’s supposed to do when an invading germ is threatening. It slows you down, makes you take it easy, and generally causes you to take the rest you need to get past the harshest stage of the virus.

However, people who took aspirin found their fevers lowered and aches and pains eased, and went on about their business, spreading the virus and weakening their systems as they worked (which was more strenuous activity back then) and opening themselves up to the other opportunistic infections that would eventually kill them.

Mainstream medicine will screech to high heaven that these two factors—vaccinations and aspirin—were not the reason why millions of people worldwide died during the Spanish flu outbreak. But the sad fact is that all the research points to these being exactly why the flu A) spread so rampantly and B) became so lethal—people had no idea what they were doing to themselves.

And now on to H5N1—‘bird flu’

This virus, found in the digestive tracts of certain Asian birds (which, along with pig digestive tracts, is generally where most “flus” originate), was isolated and named in 1997. Read that again: 1997. Eight years ago.

Since H5N1—“bird flu”—has mutated, as most influenza viruses invariably do, to a human form in 2003, it has been contracted by (to date) exactly 116 people. Read that again: 116 people. These are mostly bird farmers (and/or their family members), with not the most sanitary of career choices, in Asian countries.

Since 2003, H5N1—“bird flu”—has killed (to date) exactly 60 people. Read that again: there have been only 60 deaths from bird flu worldwide, most of these isolated to Asian countries where sanitation isn’t exactly first-world quality.

When stretched out over the time period containing it, bird flu, mutated to human form, has, on the average, stricken 58 people per year; it has killed, on the average, 30 people per year.

That’s two-and-a-half people a month, or, if you want to get really specific, .08 people per day.

Incidentally, with 60 of 116 people dying after being infected with it, the avian flu has barely a 52 percent mortality rate. Anthrax did better in 2001.

The infection rate is virtually infinitesimal, since a huge portion of the world’s population lives in Asian countries.

There have been no known cases of human-to-human transmission in any of the countries to which the virus has spread.

So the bottom line: bird flu is hardly at pandemic levels, and is really nothing to worry about. It does not warrant even a second of what MSM has been giving it over the past couple of weeks.

Avoid the flu with no shots

To keep from becoming a victim of the bird flu or any other influenza virus, there are a couple of things to remember.

Immunizations are nothing but a way for drug companies to make money. Annually, “health experts” touting the “flu shots” for everyone explain how they determine what to put in their immunizations: a dead version of whatever virulent strain of flu is anticipated to make the rounds of the globe, generally for the U.S., between November and April.

The sad fact is that while every “virulent strain” generally originates in Asia in the springtime, by the time it gets to the U.S. in the winter, it has mutated so much that the current brand of immunization being given is completely useless. It would take scientists and medical personnel working round the clock and flying in fresh batches at the speed of light to combat a current version of influenza from one country to the next. It’s just not possible to pinpoint and combat every virus per season.

There is NO BIRD FLU vaccine!!

And this point must be emphasized: There is currently NO ‘bird flu’ vaccine available!! In order for there to be a vaccine specific to H5N1, development must start with the human form of the virus—which does not yet exist, except perhaps in military-biomedical-pharmaceutical labs.

According to Leonard G. Horowitz, DMD, MA, MPH, “a human version of H5N1 must be cultured for lengthy periods of time in human cell cultures, then injected into monkey and ultimately humans to see if these experimental subjects get the same feared flu.”

Only then may a vaccine be prepared—maybe—if one can be created at all.

Remember: a vaccine must require specificity to be effective. Unless it’s already surreptitiously being developed, moving at the speed of light is the only way such a vaccine will be available to help against this particular kind of flu and all the mutated forms it may take before spreading to the general populace and becoming an “epidemic.”

Yes, the shot can make you sick

And for people who don’t think a flu shot can make them sick because it’s a “dead virus” and not a live one, well, that’s partly true; the dead version can’t give you that version of the flu.

However, what a lot of people don’t realize is that raw eggs are used in the incubation process to create the virus, and a lot of people are allergic to raw eggs (many people are allergic even to cooked eggs and don’t know it, suffering stomach distress upon eating them and just passing it off as “gas”; comparatively, raw egg products, injected into the body, can create violent illness).

Further, mercury, in the form of thimerasol, is used in every vaccine suspension as a preservative. Thimerasol isn’t good for anyone, but it’s particularly bad for people who are sensitive to heavy metals. For some people, the thimerasol alone in a vaccine can kill them if they don’t know what their sensitivities are.

Bottom line: Getting a flu shot is exceptionally risky and should be avoided. There is no necessity for a “flu shot” whatsoever.

Natural precautions

So how do you keep from getting the flu when whatever mutated version finally comes around? Simple: natural precautions.

It is said that vitamin C is a good prevent-all; that’s not exactly the case. It’s the ascorbic acid in C that helps the body’s defenses. Ascorbic acid can be purchased in powder form and diluted with a baking-soda-and-water drink for fast absorption (find the recipe and ingredients in any health food store.)

The other very important “immune boosters” available are also very simple: colloidal silver, garlic, oil of oregano and olive leaf.

All of these ingredients, taken as directed on packaging, will keep anyone, even an immune-compromised person, healthy enough to fight off not only the flu but the other opportunistic infections that attend it, making it absolutely unnecessary to get a flu shot.

Otherwise, keep your home and possessions very clean. Ensure that you wash your hands and that everyone in your household does the same, several times a day. Avoid crowds and going into and out of hot/cold conditions (in and out of a heated building, as an example. Being cold causes you to shiver, shifting the body’s defense resources toward making you warm. With defenses down, bugs can enter and set up housekeeping in your body more readily. So yes, going in and warming up after playing in the snow, then going right back out to it, can make you sick.)

What if you get the flu?

The answer to this is very simple.

Don’t fight it. Go ahead and run a fever; it’s your body’s way of destroying the virus. (Note: don’t let the fever get above 102; and watch very young, very elderly and chronically ill patients with fever. Tylenol is better to give than aspirin, but do so in low enough doses so that the fever has a chance to destroy the virus.)

Stay away from people who might be carrying another virus, bacteria, fungus or parasite that can strike your weakened immune system in combination with the flu virus.

Drink lots of liquids so that the body, in a fevered state, stays hydrated.
And rest, rest, rest. Do NOT exert yourself at all. Your body is doing the work it’s designed to do—let it.

Very bottom line—bird flu and all the attendant press is just hype. Don’t allow yourself to get pulled in by the crap and the fearmongering. It is minimally infectious and has low mortality, and really poses no risk to anyone in the U.S.—unless, of course, it is brought in on purpose. Even then, it is possible to avoid it. Don’t go mainstream, and you’ll be fine.
