Chelsea Clinton: President by Inheritance?

Irina Andreychenko

Pravda

"At the Senate’s pre-election meeting in New York, Hillary appeared wearing a button saying “Chelsea in 2016”

Translated By Elena Aranovych

In the United States a presidential dynasty begins to take shape. "Chelsea for president". The “first daughter” has a political future, ensures the former American president Bill Clinton, who nominates his daughter as a candidate in the next decade’s presidential elections.

The twenty-eight-year old Chelsea didn’t gain the minimum experience required for candidacy yet, but she is working on it by participating in the election campaign of Hillary Clinton, the former First Lady of the state and the wife of Bill Clinton. “The rising star” helps her mother to win the votes of American youth and as it turned out, has absolutely nothing against continuing her political career.

According to Bill Clinton himself, at some point Chelsea realized that the cause for Hillary’s loss in Iowa was the lack of interest of the American youth, which is why Chelsea entered the battle to strengthen her mother’s support on the part of the young voters. According to the Italian “La Stampa”, Clinton admits that his daughter is doing quite well and is capable of following in the footsteps of her parents.

In fact, Hillary’s isn’t the first election campaign that Chelsea has taken part in. The first time was when the 12-year-old Chelsea was telling the Americans in a taped commercial how great her father Bill Clinton was. When Ms. Clinton for the first time ran for the Senate, her 20-year-old daughter was traveling along with her mother in the State of New York holding meetings with voters. It seems, that at about that time Hillary began to think about her daughter’s political future. At any rate, at the Senate’s pre-election meeting in New York, Hillary appeared wearing a button saying “Chelsea in 2016”.

Chelsea Clinton truly enjoys her role as a slightly glamorous political princess. According to “The New-York Times”, Jill Kargman, a friend of Ms Clinton said "This is The Truman Show” referring to the movie about a person whose whole life was a reality show. Chelsea competes for the title of the World's Sexiest Vegetarian; goes to Philadelphian gay bars reminding the guests whom they should vote for; criticizes the current president; gets ready for the upcoming marriage with her boyfriend Mark Mezvinsky and looks forward to having children.

By the way, there were rumors that a member of the municipal corporation of a small Kenyan town, Nakuru Godwin Kipkemoi Chepkurgor, were making a pass at Chelsea Clinton. In 2000 he sent a letter to the Clintons in which he admired the presidential family and vowed to love and cherish their daughter. There was no reply to the letter, but the African man didn’t despair and during Bill Clinton’s visit to Kenya, he gave the president another letter offering a bride price of 40 goats and 20 cows. Needless to say, not having bothered to think about the young girl’s opinion of his proposal, the African gained nothing from this incident; although, considering the current rivalry between Hillary and the black Obama, this kind of a black and white alliance could increase the Clinton’s chances to be elected.

But Chelsea has chosen a banker of Jewish origin whose parents Marjorie Margolis and Edward Mezvinsky, are former sitting members of the United States Congress. It’s unlikely though that there won’t be any surprises in this relationship either. In 2002, Mezvinsky was suspected of swindling millions of dollars and turned into an antihero of a serious scandal.

Anyway, we can talk about the formation of presidential dynasties in the USA, which is of course the Bush family. Moreover, some biographers assert that George Bush Sr. is a descendant or a relative of Franklin Pierce, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln and Gerald Ford. Other examples: The president James Madison was a close relative of George Washington. Zachary Taylor was Madison’s first cousin. John Quincy Adams was the son of John Adams. Grover Cleveland was a distant relative of Ulysses S. Grant. Benjamin Harrison was the grandson of President William Henry Harrison. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a cousin of Martin Van Buren, the second cousin of Ulysses S. Grant, the third cousin of Zachary Taylor and the fifth cousin of Theodore Roosevelt. Harry S. Truman was a distant relative of John Tyler. Richard Milhouse Nixon was William Taft’s and Herbert Hoover’s distant relative.

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

Jerusalem — The building stands at the centre of the city, its curved façade looming like a question mark. Older than Israel itself, and with a history nearly as tormented and complicated, the Sansur Building will witness the celebrations unfolding on the adjacent Zion Square this week as the Jewish state celebrates its 60th anniversary.

But if the grimy pedestrian shopping plaza that is Zion Square – at the heart of the newer, western half of this ancient city – is synonymous with Israel, the three-storey Sansur is a reminder of why Palestinians refer to Israel's birth on May 15, 1948, as the naqba, the catastrophe. And of why the fighting for this land has never stopped since that day.

A small plaque on the outer wall tells passersby that the three-storey edifice with the neoclassical touches was erected by the Sansur Brothers of Bethlehem in 1929. Like much of the history here, that's a matter of opinion. The building's real story mirrors that of a country still wrestling with both its past and its modern identity. The tales of those who built it, those who lived and worked in it and even those who were merely passing by all follow the tragic, violent course that this country and its peoples have taken.

Lives ordinary and extraordinary – Arab and Jew, Holocaust survivors and suicide bombers – have been colliding here since the moment the Jewish state was born. They crashed, clashed and left each other changed – and almost always for the worse. Together, their stories pose an existential question that Israel, on the eve of its 60th birthday, has yet to answer.

The pioneer

Sixty years ago, a young woman named Batya Bornstein was among the hundreds of revellers who surged onto Zion Square to celebrate Israel's declaration of independence. The 24-year-old watched gleefully as dozens of youths danced the hora and sang as they spun around a bonfire in the middle of the plaza.

Even then, tensions were high. War was clearly on the horizon and in a sense already under way. Ben Yehuda Street, which meets Jaffa Road at Zion Square, still bore the scars of a triple car-bomb attack carried out by Arab fighters just three months earlier, killing 52 Jewish civilians.

Ms. Bornstein had served as a medic in the Haganah militia that was one of four main Jewish paramilitary organizations battling Arab fighters in the run-up to Independence Day. All four would soon be folded into the Israel Defence Forces to combat the combined armies of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, which invaded immediately after the declaration of independence.

The war was to last a year, and Israel not only survived, but expanded its territory significantly beyond what it had been allotted under the United Nations plan for the partition of Palestine into Arab and Jewish halves.

Ms. Bornstein had arrived in what was then the British mandate of Palestine in 1934, after her father decided that the rising anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe – and neighbouring Germany – meant that their native Poland was no longer a safe place to raise a family.

“We left Lvov on a stormy day, it was December, and when we came to Israel it was still December, but the sun was shining. I remember seeing a lot of oranges,” the frail but sharp-minded 83-year-old says, recalling the day she and her family landed in Haifa.

Today, she lives in a photograph-cluttered apartment in Katamon, an Arab neighbourhood that was seized by Israel – and emptied of its former inhabitants – during the fighting of 1948-49.

For Ms. Bornstein's family, Israel provided a refuge from the horrors that were unfolding in Europe. Her beloved grandmother and most of her extended family disappeared into the Nazi concentration camp of Belzec in eastern Poland. Her husband, Shmuel, whom she married in 1951, emerged from years of internment in both Belzec and Bergen-Belsen, racked with diphtheria, but alive.

Like many Holocaust survivors, he went straight from Europe's war to Palestine's. Mr. Bornstein served in the Haganah unit that fought first in the Galilee and then later in the battle for the southern port of Eilat that was the last major combat of the war.

Court Approves Anti-Israel Independence Day Ceremony

(IsraelNN.com) A court in Nazareth has approved a ceremony to be held this coming Independence Day that will commemorate the "catastrophic" nature of the day for Israel's Arabs.

The Nazareth District Court has allowed the radical anti-Israel Islamic Movement to conduct a Naqba (Catastrophe) ceremony on Israel's Independence Day, next Thursday. Many Arabs believe Independence Day actually marks their own Naqba, and commemorate it as such.

The ruling was handed down today (Thursday) after the authorities of the Arab town of Kfar Kana refused to allow the ceremony, claiming it was political in nature. The court rejected this claim, and the anti-Israel ceremony will be held on Independence Day in the Kfar Kana stadium.

MKs Saar, Orlev, Livnat
"Such a decision on the day we remember the Holocaust," said MK Gideon Saar (Likud), "is shameful, and it shows total Zionism and moral bankruptcy."

MK Zevulun Orlev, chairman of the National Religious Party, agreed, saying, "The court's decision makes a mockery of the Declaration of Independence, and of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state."

Likud MK Limor Livnat, a former Minister of Education, demands that the government file a request for an appeal of the court ruling. "The brain refuses to accept that on Holocaust Day, a court in Israel could come to such an incredible ruling," she said. "Now, more than ever, we must remember that the State of Israel is primarily the State of the Jews."

Saar added, "The Naqba ceremony will most definitely be a stage for incitement against Israel. It shows that our national authorities have no national respect or self-respect."

In Gaza, the crisis goes on as the Imperial President arrives

Please circulate widely!! -

**************************

End the siege of Gaza – End Israeli occupation

PSC calls on its members and supporters to take urgent steps to highlight the crisis in Gaza.

The siege being imposed on Palestinians is making life a living hell in Gaza. The World Food Programme has said that food imports only cover 41 per cent of demand. Palestinians are suffering from hunger and malnutrition, and those seriously ill are being prevented from accessing essential medical treatment outside Gaza by Israel sealing the borders. Israel is cutting fuel and electricity supplies, and 210,000 people are able to access drinking water for only 1-2 hours a day.

Over 40 Gazans have died as a direct result of being denied medical treatment by the Israeli authorities. Twenty per cent of essential drugs and 31 per cent of essential medical supplies are no longer available inside Gaza .

The Israeli, EU, US and British governments are systematically attempting to overturn the results of the last Palestinian parliamentary elections, declared free and fair by the international community. This siege is punishing Palestinians for simply exercising their right to choose their own representatives.

But an even greater assault is on the horizon, with senior Israeli figures making clear that if their policy of imposing a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza does not succeed in ensuring that Palestinians submit to the will of the state of Israel , they are preparing for massive military action inside Gaza .

We therefore ask everybody to write to your MPs urging the British government to immediately:

- Demand the Israeli government lift the siege and ends all collective punishment imposed on the civilian population of Gaza

- Demand the EU restores funding to Gaza

- Respect Palestinian democracy and engage with elected Palestinian representatives

- Ensure Israel release the Palestinian elected representatives it has abducted and imprisoned

- Support the suspension of the EU/Israel trade agreement until Israel ends its occupation.

To publicise the End the Siege of Gaza campaign, PSC has produced leaflets for the public and postcards for the Foreign Secretary which are now available from the PSC office.

Ethnic Cleansing Goes on and Israel Wants You to Accept It

Ilan Pappe: the peace process means what piece of Palestine Israel is supposed to annex and what Bantustan is supposed to be given to the Arabs

Ethnic Cleansing Goes on and Israel Wants You to Accept It

AUTHOR: Emanuela IRACE

Translated by Diego Traversa. Revised by Mary Rizzo

Ilan Pappe arrived in Italy without causing any sensational uproar. He is IEMASVO’s guest [1], at the ISIAO’s Roman venue [2], for a conference over Israel-Palestine. Title: “One land, two peoples”.

After having denounced in recent months the impossibility of working peacefully in a hostile milieu, namely at Haifa University, Pappe moved to Britain where he now teaches at Exeter University. Historian of dissent, “revisionist”, born in 1954 in Israel son of Jews who fled from the Germany of the ‘30s, he has published a half dozen books. Amongst the most recent works there is “The ethnic cleansing of Palestine”, not yet translated into Italian. The core of the exploration by the great historian is the Zionist policy comprised of deportations and compulsory expulsions carried out against the Palestinians during and after the 1948 war, when some 400 villages were evacuated, razed and destroyed in the space of five years.

Professor Pappe, you write of ethnic cleansing, in 1948, as the foundational moment of Israel. In this way you shatter the “topos” of the voluntary exile of the Palestinians.

“The Palestinians were driven out in 1947-48, even though the official historical record speaks about pressure from the Arab leaders who ostensibly persuaded them to flee. The idea of finding a refuge for the Jewish community, persecuted in Europe and annihilated by Nazism, clashed with a native population who was in a phase of redefining itself. A colonial project that practiced ethnic cleansing, tackling the demographic problem beforehand: the existence of 600 thousand Jews against one million Palestinians. In February 1948, before the Arabs decided to oppose it in a military manner, the Israelis had already expelled over 300 thousand native people.”

How was the ethnic cleansing carried out and why had everyone kept silent?

“It lasted eight months and only in October 1948 did the Palestinians start to defend themselves in any serious way. The Zionists’ response to this were the slaughters in the province of Galilee, the confiscation of houses, of bank accounts, of lands. The Israelis erased a people and its culture. Nobody denounced the situation because the World War had just ended. The UN couldn’t admit that one of their resolutions (note of the author: the resolution 181, about Palestine’s partition) was ending up with ethnic cleansing. The Red Cross had already been accused of not having impartially reported what happened in the Nazi concentration camps and the most important media wanted to avoid a clash with the Jews.”

A guilt complex and “diplomacy” in the governments’ actions: and what were the consequences?

“During the Holocaust, the countries that are today criticizing Israel, either were accomplices or they kept silent. These are the reasons why the international community has renounced its right to judge us. It bears guilt which it can no longer find a remedy for. Thus losing, still today, the right to criticize Israel’s government. The consequence is that when the state of Israel was established, nobody blamed it for the ethnic cleansing which it had been founded on, a crime against humanity carried out by those who planned and fulfilled it. From that time on, ethnic cleansing has become an ideology, an infrastructural decoration of the state. A matter that is still topical, since Israel’s primary target is demographic: to seize as much territory as possible with the least number of Arabs living in it as possible.”

By what forms and means does the ethnic cleansing go on?

“Through ‘cleaner and more presentable’ systems. The Minister of Justice has been trying for a month to legitimize the illegal settlements by leaving the outposts in place. We’ve learnt that the High Court of Justice is pondering whether to authorize the government to make a cut-down on fuel supplies, thus leaving Gaza without electricity, where there are a million Palestinians who would find themselves in the situation of not being able to have access to drinking water, since the water-bearing stratum is polluted with sewage and people can drink it only if there is an electrical water purification system. Yet, there are many other ways and examples to annihilate the Palestinians, in primis the Wall, accepted by the US and the EU.”

What is Israel asking from its allies?

“It wants them to accept its model as such. During the 1967 war, 300 thousand Palestinians were expelled from the West Bank, in the last seven years ethnic cleansing has become ‘building the Wall’, that pushes the Palestinians back towards the desert, outside the area of Greater Jerusalem reserved for them. The problem is that the Israeli leadership thinks of its own state by ethnic, racial yardsticks and therefore it is racist by all means. All of this is perceived by the Palestinians and this fact embodies the biggest hindrance to peace between Palestine and Israel. The so-called ’peace process’ is thus reduced to deciding what part of Palestine has to again be annexed by Israel and what tiny part can perhaps be given to the Palestinian population.”

What can be done to reverse this process?

“First of all, we have to change our terminologies. It’s not about a clash between Jews and Palestinians. It’s matter of colonialism. It’s incredible how a colonialist policy can be still accepted in the 21st century. We have to force Israel to comply with the same measures that were imposed on racist South Africa in the ‘60s and the ‘70s. Today there are opinion movements of young Jews, in Europe and in the US, who point the finger at Israel’s colonialist policies and accuse it as a colonialist and racist state, not because it is a state founded by Jews.”

In France and in other European countries there are laws that place restrictions on the right to express “revisionist” opinions towards Israel, yet there are no steps taken against the continuous violation of the UN resolutions.

“I underwent such an experience about two years ago. One of my lectures was interrupted by a group of extremists, composed of Jews like me, who prevented me from continuing. The police came in, to protect rather than to accuse me. As to keeping silent, it’s by far easier for people to think in a conventional manner. One has to have a lot of energy and originality to act in non-conformist ways. For instance, UN Resolution 194 states that the Palestinian refugees have the right to return to their land. Yet it’s much easier to do nothing and keep thinking in the usual identical formula.”

Are these the very reasons why the Italian left goes on proposing the “two peoples, two states” model?

“Certainly, the Italian left isn’t courageous. Yet it has no choice but to change, since the situation on the ground is becoming catastrophic. If Israel invades Gaza, as it’s quite likely to do, many Palestinians will be killed and yet the situation won’t change. Gaza is a big prison, and what might happen, just as in many prison uprisings, is: the army will restore the ’law and order’ by beating and killing. It’s bound to be a slaughterhouse but as soon as they leave the situation will remain exactly the same.”

What would the outcome of a “two peoples, one state” formula be instead?

“It’s necessary that the populations accept one another, that the Jews acknowledge their Arab neighbours and brothers and vice-versa. Not before they both recognize history for what it has been and only after they both shoulder their own responsibilities. Recognition, responsibility and mutual acceptance. Only by following this way a single state may be fulfilled, one depending on the “one person, one vote” principle and where citizens, in spite of not loving each other, may coexist. It’s a project that can be achieved if we are allowed to continue to criticise and prevent the crimes Israel is continuously carrying out and if the disinvestment campaign goes on being applied as was done with South Africa.”

David Swanson, the "pocket veto", 2008 election and THE LEFT

All of it, all of it, is too true.

Here it is election year, and BuZh just "vetoed"/torpedoed the budget, using lies and crookiness as USUAL .. saying CONgress is on holiday! when in fact, the Senate is sitting in order to prevent him from making recess appointments (one coming is the replacement of CHERTOFF, with a Col. Bart Johnson. This is not your common, ordinary everyday garden variety of pocket veto. (More like a bouquet of nightshades.)

Like (most) everyone on the blogosphere is saying, he fears oversight because it would mean his and his entire administration's ass, which we all want on a platter...

Bush has

rejected a pay raise for the troops, VA care for wounded veterans, a new “Truman Commission” to fight fraud and waste by military contractors, and expanded job protections for family members of severely wounded troops.

And we are discussinsg the timber of Barak Obama's speech, Mike Huckabee's latest fantasy interlude, what rating we give Rudy Giulani in drag, how Many (not if) lies HiLIARy is telling,

Man, it is to LAUGH, if we're so damned sad.

Why are these candidates getting away with NOT DISCUSSING IMPEACHMENT??????

And, David, is there someone, anyone who can take a court challenge over this "veto", which is NOT a veto under the Constitution, to put to rest his friviolous claim? Isn't there SOMEONE with standing under the law (any of the candidates!) who can challenge this??

Why didn't BuZh call back the House to fix whatever he found wrong?? Why is no one attacking what he has done???

Is discussing what is happening taboo, or .. just a thought crime???

I am serious, can you give me any ideas??

Death By Election

Tell A Friend

There must be a Star Trek episode (if there's not, there should be) in which all the best minds in the leftist political opposition on some planet are diverted into an obsession with a virtual reality game, leaving all the right-wingers free to drive the planet into inevitable war and destruction. A game is a harmless thing when not put to such use. Elections are a fundamental pillar of democracy when not put to such use. That makes the case I want to argue all the more difficult. My thesis is that, if we do not change our thinking, elections are going to be the death of U.S. democracy.

How can that be? Without elections, there can be no democracy. And participating in elections is the principal, if not sole, duty of the citizens of a democracy. The health of our democracy can be measured by the wide range of candidate choices we've been offered. We've even got a woman and an African American. What in the world can you be talking about?

Well, I would make a slight modification to one of the claims above: Without HONEST AND CREDIBLE elections, there can be no democracy. We have not had anything approaching those in the past 8 years, and we have left in place a system that will deny us those again in November 2008: http://www.freepress.org/departments/display/19/2007/2920 Citizens who are busy working to create a credible election system in certain states, and perhaps someday in the entire United States, are doing crucial work. They should be encouraged, joined, and supported.

I would make another slight modification: Without honest and credible elections and an INFORMED ELECTORATE, there can be no democracy. The corporate media that dominates the U.S. information system does not provide useful electoral information. While we are developing an independent, web-based, and radio communications system, much of that system currently, voluntarily, and self-destructively submits to the frames of the corporate media, serving as critic rather than educator, boosting cynicism rather than participation. Leftists, liberals, and progressives, and those who share their views but run in fear from their names, have more than enough money to create honest democratic television news. In fact, every election cycle, we dump that much money into election advertising that funds the destructive corporate media. It's as if we're hooked on the game and keep feeding it quarters without stopping to think.

I could go on modifying the claim about elections to rule out systems that have legalized massive bribery, imposed undemocratic primaries, locked out new parties and movements, developed election seasons that last from one election to the next, or in the immediate instance already weeded out any truly decent candidates. (Yes, you should vote for Kucinich. Yes, you should believe anything is possible. But you're going up against the televised voices in everyone's heads.)

Well, what are we supposed to do, ignore elections until we can fix them? That'll just get us more elected officials less likely to fix them, won't it?

That depends. Certainly focusing on the elections will do that, given that the elections are now routinely stolen. And I wouldn't want you to ignore elections in order to watch football. I would ask you to ignore elections in order to fix the election system now and in order to fix other pressing problems that you don't need elections to fix. I would modify this claim:

"And participating in elections is the principal, if not sole, duty of the citizens of a democracy."

to read:

Participating in honest, credible, informed elections is one of the LESS IMPORTANT of the many necessary duties of the citizens of a democracy. Participating in non-credible elections is a DISTRACTION. Of course, in the current system, the primaries offer more real choices, less fraud, and many fewer voters than the general election. They also don't put anyone in office.

Have you ever noticed that the U.S. Constitution doesn't mention primaries? Or political parties? Or corporations? Or churches? It provides no right to vote. Instead, it mentions the freedoms to speak, to assemble, to publish news, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. And it goes on repeatedly, at some length, to establish the power of the people's representatives in the House of Representatives to hold an outlaw executive or judiciary in check through impeachment.

O.K. But how do we petition our government for a redress of grievances except by waiting until the next election and voting it out?

Is it possible we really have to be told this again? We do it by assembling, by speaking, by publishing news, and by drawing on the traditions of Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr., the tradition of suffragettes and labor, the lessons of abolitionists and populists. We resist injustice here and now through creative nonviolent action. In early January, the peace movement will announce a series of major actions in March 2008. Resistance to the new American policy of torture is planned for January 11: http://www.witnesstorture.org A growing list of members of the House Judiciary Committee is pushing for hearings to begin in January on Dick Cheney's impeachment: http://impeachcheney.org On January 26, we can join the world for World Social Forum events: http://www.wsf2008.net On January 31, we can all help end global warming: http://www.focusthenation.org/nationalteachin.php On February 15, we can demand an end to the occupation of Iraq: http://www.iraqmoratorium.org By the time March comes around, we can build the activist culture needed to revive a democracy that is wilting under the heat of election madness.

And not a moment too soon. Scientists agree that we have a limited number of years to reverse the current climate change, or we will be past the point of no return. The common acceptance that we must waste the next year before acting is evidence, I think, of greater self-destructive tendencies than ever surfaced during the Cold War. We do NOT have to wait another year. We have to impeach Cheney and Bush. We have to work at the state level. We have to work internationally. We have to educate and mobilize, pressure, resist, and sacrifice. The occupation of Iraq is worse every year. The attack on Iran is still a threat. Pakistan, a nation that really DOES have nuclear weapons, is in turmoil. And where is the so-called progressive online media? Where is the blogosphere? Why, it's got its nose so far up the ass of the November 2008 elections it can taste the inaugural champagne.

Is it really true that the health of our democracy can be measured by the wide range of candidate choices we've been offered? Take this 1-minute test, and then tell me if you still believe that: http://www.dehp.net/candidate

How closely did any of the candidates come to agreeing with you? Did those who came closest fall into the category of corporate-acceptable "viability"? Why can't you find anything about this situation or any substantive reporting on candidates' positions at all? Because for some politics is a sport, and the fascination lies in the techniques and maneuvers, not in what it might mean for the world. For others, politics is a soap opera, an excuse to obsess over whether in the next episode Obama will take his shirt off or Giuliani's ex-wife's ex-husband will claim to have Hillary's child. Think I'm exaggerating? Not much.

The political blogs, like MyDD are all election, all the time. Firedoglake gets credit for being 2/3 election, all the time. Huffington Post is 3/4 election, and 3/4 of that is election fluff and refuse. On New Year's Eve, this was the top HuffPost story, with two big photos: "Edwards: Obama Too "Nice" For The Presidency." It was followed by these edifying tracts:

Some of those articles are by people I greatly admire, and in some cases know and like. But if they were in that Star Trek episode I mentioned, my concern would be that their abilities were being wasted when we needed them most. Here is the complete set of headlines that the otherwise wonderful website BuzzFlash Emailed out in a New Year's Eve Email:

Awhile back there was a rumor buzzing around that McCain was pleading with the NYT not to post an article revealing his extensive -- and hypocritical -- tie to lobbyists. Turns out it was the WP working on the article, and they posted it on Dec. 31.

Latest MSNBC-McClatchy Poll: Dem Race Still Too Close to Call, With Shifts of One or Two Percentage Points Day by Day. "Where Edwards previously had lagged slightly behind Clinton and Obama, the poll showed him at 24 percent, compared with Clinton at 23 percent and Obama at 22 percent."

Over on Dailykos on New Year's Eve, the top story was "Huckabee's Imaginary Conception." Below it were posts like these: "More failed 'leadership,' please! On white toast with mayo," and "Mike Huckabee's incisive grasp of foreign policy." The top recommended diary was "MSM Continues Blackout of John Edwards." It was followed by "The Iowa Edwards Surge -- first-hand, on the ground," and "Barack Obama will change the system part 2."

I guess it's a relief to know that WE don't have to be the ones to change the system. Over on Alternet, the top story on New Year's Eve was "GOP Mess in Iowa: Romney Stalls, Giuliani's Flailing, Huckabee Scares the GOP Establishment." It was followed by these gems:

Despite Media Hype, Iowa's Democratic Caucuses Will Have No True Winner
Huckabee: 'I Don’t Know' If People Are 'Born' Gay, But It’s a 'Choice' to Act Gay [VIDEO]
Election 2008: Huckabee has a record of using the power of government to discriminate against the choices that gay Americans make in their private lives.
Iowa: Edwards Takes on Corporate Greed
The Imperial Presidency: The '08 Candidates Weigh In
Behind the Edwards Surge: Right Message at the Right Time
The Best Moments in Mike Huckabee's Extremism
Iowa Caucuses: Not the Battle of the Century

Oh, and that "Imperial Presidency" one - contributed by Huffington Post - is a column arguing that we should address through an election, a year away, exactly what the authors of the Constitution told us to address through impeachment.

Better than average on the awaking-from-eternal-election-daze count is Common Dreams, which on New Year's Eve ran the top headline: "FROM IOWA CORNFIELDS, A LEFT-TILTING TRADITION, MOST DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES VOTE FOR NUCLEAR POWER," but which carried below it a relatively small percentage of election headlines, including these:

An Endorsement from the Wilderness
Behind the Edwards Surge: Right Message at the Right Time
What Hillary Hasn’t Done in Foreign Policy
Mitt Romney’s Pursuit of Tyrannical Power, Literally
Candidates Split Along Party Lines on Healthcare

Truthout.org does relatively well too, tending to run 50% or less election coverage. OpEdNews is superb, making election coverage far less than half its news. On New Year's Eve, it featured two election-related top headlines, but one of them was about preventing election fraud and the other about Ron Paul's refusal to support impeachment.

Democratic Underground is pretty far gone on most days, running lots of election blogs and even more election videos. Video websites are easily dominated by election fluff, but video-heavy Crooks and Liars tends to keep election nonsense to a relatively low level.

I mention all of these websites, because they are the ones I like and would like to see focused on the work needed to restore our democracy, not a year from now, but immediately. My goal is not to leave the business of elections to those who will steal what we break our necks preventing them from winning. My goal is to shift the political discussion in ways that, among many other things, compel better political candidates.

I know there are tender feelings involved here. I know John Edwards is cute, and even Hillary seems measurably less insane than Huckabee. I know Gravel has more heart than Biden. I know you adore Ron Paul more because you think he'll shut down the empire than because he's a xenophobic bigoted moron. I get that there are differences and intrigues, personalities, and tons of money and hard work at stake. My point is that we need not lower our standards so far that supporters of the last invasion who refuse to forswear the next one count as the best we can do.

But we cannot raise those standards through electoral work. If we want John Edwards to promise never to launch an aggressive war, we will impeach the people who launched the last one. If we want Hillary Clinton to commit to not spying on Huckabee (or any of us) without a warrant and probable cause, we will put behind bars the architects of the current spying programs. If we want the world to understand that Bush and Cheney and the current Congress do not speak for us, we will raise our voices now, not next November. Focusing on the choices presented to us in a two-year electoral campaign leads to insufficient pressure on Congress (with disastrous results in 2007), not to mention independent billionaire campaigns.

If we want credible elections and palatable candidates, we will break the electoral spell and start behaving like the citizens of a democracy.
