ACTIVISM: Anti Star wars defense update

JUNE 22 PHOTOS AND AN EMAIL FROM THE COLONEL

Folks met in Brunswick, Maine on the town green for an hour of sign
holding, writing letters to Condi Rice (who goes to the Czech
Republic on July 10 to sign the Star Wars radar agreement), and we
closed with a circle and everyone shared why they had come. Most
of those in the photo fasted on June 22.

In dozens of cities all over the world the June 22 global day of
fasting brought people out onto the streets in creative displays
of solidarity with the 70% of the people in the Czech Republic who
are working hard to reject U.S. plans to deploy a Star Wars radar
facility in their country.

Thousands of signatures were gathered for the petition at
http://www.nonviolence.cz/ In many places statements were written
on paper plates to Secretary of State Rice and will be sent to her
before her visit to Prague in early July.

You can find many more photos, and reports, at this web site.

At the end of the day I received an email from Col. Robert Suminsby,
Jr. in which he said, "The point I made, and will continue to make,
is that the country is on an unsustainable course. The growth of
entitlement spending, left unchecked, will eventually crowd out all
other parts of the federal budget."

Col. Suminsby worries that people like me are taking a fixed position
of hands off entitlement spending ........"You see, I'm prepared
to make sacrifices to fix national problems. I think others should
expect to make sacrifices as well," he said.

I want to assure the Colonel that I too am ready to see "sacrifices"
made for the good of the nation. I'd like to see the $14 billion
of month we are wasting in Iraq and Afghanistan brought home to
build rail systems, solar, and windmills. I'd like to not see us
attack Iran. I'd like to see an end to tax cuts for the rich and
the corporations. I want an end to the NSA's "warrantless wiretapping"
of American citizens and people all over the world.

I'd like to see at least a 50% cut in military spending for starters.
(Just yesterday an article was sent around about the increases in
funding for the Pentagon's high-tech black "secret" budget. I'd
like to see the black budget shut down.) I'd like to see the 750
plus U.S. military bases around the world shut down.

Living at a time where we face increasing corporate media consolidation
many of us have to rely on email, websites, and blogs to get our
messages out to the general public. Newspapers are now in dire
financial straits, in part, because people rely on the Internet as
their primary source of information.

Col. Suminsby concluded his email to me by saying, "Therebs precious
little difference between you and any number of right-wing blowhards
on talk radiob&on either end of the ideological spectrum, if you
insist on creating your own version of someonebs position and then
attacking it, youbll succeed only in making yourself feel good, and
convincing those who already agreed with you."

I would thank Col. Suminsby for sending me the email. He should
know that increasing majorities of the people in the U.S. and around
the world are now quite uncomfortable with the escalating U.S.
military empire. There is a growing backlash against U.S. militarism
both here at home and abroad.

I noticed that the Colonel is soon to be transferred to Germany. I
lived there in the mid-1960's when my Air Force father was stationed
in Wiesbaden. One day our middle school class was taken to the Rhine
River to view the ruins of a castle. The tourist guide informed us
that the stone slab we were standing on had once been the barracks
of Roman soldiers. I remember wondering to myself, "What were those
soldiers doing so far from home?" Even at that young age I intuitively
understood that empires are a contradiction and in time can not
stand. They are destined to fall.

In our case the U.S. empire is now collapsing. One clear sign is
that in the U.S. there is growing competition for the federal tax
dollar. Will we fund the Pentagon or social progress? We can't serve
two masters.

It appears that the debate will go on.

On Bruce Gagnon's hunger strike agaInst US missile shield

Czech mate: Gagnon goes on hunger strike Times Record (Brunswick,
Maine) 05/30/2008 BRUNSWICK - Bruce Gagnon of Bath spends about an
hour on the Brunswick Mall each day waving signs and distributing
flyers, hoping to call attention to the U.S. deployment of what he
calls "Star Wars technology."

Though he spends only an hour or so there each day, his commitment
to the cause goes around the clock. Gagnon is in the midst of a
hunger strike that he said will last as long as his friends in the
Czech Republic continue theirs. At issue is the United States' plan
to build a radar base there in support of a missile defense system
in outer space.

Gagnon said since May 24, he has consumed nothing except water with
lemon, orange juice in the morning and herbal tea in the evening.

"I've already lost 10 pounds," he said Thursday while protesting
on the Mall and handing fliers to passing motorists. "I've researched
it and I know you can go 30 or 40 days without medical problems."

The Prague Monitor reported earlier this month that the radar base
would facilitate ten interceptor missiles which are designed to
shoot enemy missiles out of the sky. The Czech government reported
at the time that two treaties on the system were expected to be
signed in June or mid-July at the latest, the Monitor said. Gagnon
has joined other strikers worldwide, including Jan Tamas and Jan
Bednar of the Czech Republic, both leaders of the No to Bases
Coalition, which opposes the deployment of the radar system.

Bednar is showing signs of liver failure as a result of the strike,
but has vowed to continue, said Gagnon. Asked if he'd take his own
strike that far, Gagnon said he would.

According to Gagnon's Web page, for more than two years 70 percent
of the Czech people "have repeatedly expressed their opposition to
the proposed base through mass demonstrations, opinion polls and
petitions, the Czech government has refused to allow a public debate
on the issue. Time is running out, as Secretary of State Condoleeza
Rice is expected to travel to Prague in June to sign the agreement
between two countries."

Gagnon is a widely known activist for a host of causes including
the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, which
he coordinates. He and his supporters - some of whom are joining
him in this week's protest - are regulars on the Brunswick Mall
speaking out mostly against the War on Terror. Opposing "Star Wars"
technology is not a new endeavor, though this time, his protest and
hunger strike are spurred by loyalty to his Czech friends. He knows
he's just one man, but hopes his message will spread.

"Most people know nothing about any of this," he said. "By doing
this we take a leap of faith that's like planting seeds in a garden
and we hope the seeds grow."

He said his mission is complicated by an apathy in the United States
that's the result of consumerism and overstimulation from the media.

"The American people have become sheep when it comes to political
action," he said. "Just about everywhere else in the world, people
are more engaged than we are. For me, being out here is as important,
if not more important, than the issue. It's a way to make eye contact
with people when they're trying to look away. I'm not going to let
that do that as long as I'm on this planet."

ACTIVISM: Hunger strike against

HUNGER STRIKE MUST SPREAD TO U.S.

Tell A Friend

On May13 Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar started a hunger strike in Praque. "The issue of the U.S. military base is not only an issue of international security for us, but also an issue of democracy. It is about whether we will once again allow a small group of elite politicians to ignore the wishes of the majority of the population on an issue of great importance to their fate. These methods remind us of times before 1989 -- times we don't want to be repeated," they said.

Now the hunger strike is spreading throughout Europe. The photo above is from Berlin were supporters have joined in solidarity with the hunger strikers.

Now the task is to spread the hunger strike to the U.S. which is only right since our country is the one who is trying to deploy these so-called "missile defense" systems in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Europeans clearly remember the 1983 deployments of nuclear cruise and Pershing II missiles in Europe by Ronald Reagan. These missiles were aimed at the former Soviet Union and made Europe the battleground stuck in the middle of the superpower conflict.

Europeans don't want their lands to get stuck in the middle again as the U.S. now is forcing an expansion of NATO eastward to surround Russia who has the world's largest supply of natural gas.

This simple hunger strike is creating energy and movement in Europe. The time has come for us in the U.S. to step away from the plate and join the effort.

I will join this hunger strike starting Saturday morning. Please let me know if you will join it as well in solidarity with our friends Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar.

On Oct. 6, 2007, the day of Annual Peace Conference co-sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Omaha School of Social Work and Nebraskans for Peace in Omaha, Nebraska, U. S. A., Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the “Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space,” and Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, Emeritus Auxiliary of the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit had the joint speeches on “StratCom's Role in the Militarization of Space: An Update and Christian Response.” At the First United Methodist Church, Omaha, Nebraska. Both speeches contained more details following the speeches on the same theme on Oct. 5, 2007.

As the Nebraskan for Peace noted, “U.S. Strategic Command's mission of militarizing and dominating the heavens” was the focus of the conference. It says, 'As the theme of the 2008 Global Network conference bluntly asserts, StratCom today is “the most dangerous place on the face of the earth.”

The event was 'As part of the “Keep Space for Peace Week” commemoration hosted by the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space'. 'The October 6 gathering was officially endorsed by United for Peace and Justice and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, as well as the Iowa Peace Network and the Omaha and Des Moines Catholic Worker Communities'.
