The station was built in Belgium, and aboard the Russian ice-class cargo ship Ivan Papanin, the Princess Elisabeth polar station left Antwerp on November 6th at 2 pm local time. In total, 106 containers, 4 Prinoth tractors and 2 cranes were loaded onto the ship during the three days prior to the ship's departure.

By providing state of the art facilities for a maximum of 16 scientists, the research station will contribute to the worldwide understanding of climate change.

Not only will it be running fully on renewable energy, heat recovery system has been installed.

The Belgian Federal Government has commissioned the International Polar Foundation, founded by Alain Hubert and Professors André Berger (UCL) and Hugo Decleir (VUB), to build a new research station, the "Princess Elisabeth" Station, to be constructed during the “austral summer 2007-2008”.

It is called the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica station. It will use eco friendly materials, and will operate only on renewable energy, and it is now being shipped to Antartica.

The station will be located in a small ridge near the Utsteinen nunatak and a few kilometers from the Sør Rondane mountain range. The team will install eight wind turbines on the ridge, as well as approximately 380 square meters of solar panels on and nearby the station.
