Subject: Seismic activity off the coast of OR
What is your take on all the 4-5's off the coast of Oregon? I have a
friend who lives in Portland area who can tell before they hit - She
gets extreme migranes just before and is quite concerned about them.
These have evidently been going off for over a month now and she is a
complete wreck. Any input appreciated.

MWM: It is a very complex geology. It combines strike slip action of the Pacfic Plate sliding Northwesterly against the North American Plate with a Spreading Rift Zone which extends from the Queen Charlotte Islands to basically Cape Mendocino in North Cal. At least three small plate frags hugging the coast line of North America, two of which Cascadia is over-riding very very slowly. These repeat Oregon quakes are largely associated with the Rift, involving both transform slips (nearly east and west) between the plate frags and actual Rift spreading. Strongly associated with them is major underwater volcanism. These repeat quakes (tectonic oscillations) have been reocurring in the area for the past couple of years, most noticably since early 2007. Most likely several megaplumes of very large quantities of hot water have been generated by this activity during the past many months. Where this heat is going to is not clear, it may be the source of the heat which is appearing in the North Pacific Gyre Hotspot, but this takes our thinking out on the limb quite aways. Each quake may be an indicator of another bursting of the "pipes" and another sudden surge of heat. I think this is a very good demonstration of "Global Warming" at work.
P.S. Please have your friend contact me ASAP directly. I am still watching for a complex chain of events which will begin off the coast of Oregon, create major damage in Southern California, and end up with catastrophic volcanic eruptions in Mexico.
Potential for Strong Earthquake in Pacific Northwest
Idaho Earthquakes |
Boise, Idaho -- A series of shallow earthquakes have been startling residents from Oregon to Idaho and even as far way as Alaska.
In the Gem State, the strongest shaking was felt just east of Pocatello.
The tremors, all of which are a 4.0 magnitude or less, have been occurring along the Blanco Fracture Zone off the Oregon Coast.
Emergency managers say the quakes are no cause for alarm but shouldn't be handled with absolute complacency either.
"Future activity cannot be predicted, however people living anywhere in the Pacific Northwest could potentially experience a magnitude 5 or 6 earthquake. Planning is not a prediction, but planning for the worst and hoping for the best is good advice in the disaster preparedness profession," said Susan Reinertson, FEMA's regional administrator.
Emergency managers say all Americans should have a 72 hour disaster preparedness kit with food, water, prescription medication and first aid supplies in their homes.
