Toronto 18 case takes strange twist!!

ANDREW WALLACE/TORONTO STAR
Isabel Teotonio Jun. 19, 2008
In a stunning turn of events, a Crown prosecutor yesterday accused his star witness in the Toronto 18 terror case of fabricating some of the evidence about a so-called terrorist training camp.

Police mole Mubin Shaikh was caught off guard by prosecutor John Neander's suggestion that he had lied when he said the youth on trial did not know the true purpose of the camp.

Neander called some of Shaikh's testimony "an invention" designed to protect the defendant.

Neander called some of Shaikh's testimony "an invention" designed to protect the defendant.

Although Shaikh agreed that he considered himself "a protector of the vulnerable" – a reference to the youths who attended the December 2005 camp – he rejected any notion that he had been untruthful on the witness stand.

Neander pointed to inconsistencies in three areas of testimony given by Shaikh during this trial and in previous proceedings.

One of the crucial discrepancies involved why the teens were told they had to clean up the campsite when leaving.

During a preliminary hearing, Shaikh testified "we did a sweep to conceal" and cover up "anything that would give away the nature of our activities."

But during this trial, he testified the youths were given a cover story and told to clean up the camp to protect the "chipmunks and squirrels" from choking on what they'd left behind.

Neander reminded Shaikh that he had described the nature of the camp as "nefarious" and questioned why they would've needed a cover story when its true purpose was evident since they had participated in firearms training and listened to terrorist rhetoric.

"Every fibre of your being as a loyal Canadian and a devout Muslim recoiled at what (the alleged ringleader) was doing to corrupt them, isn't that correct?" Neander charged.

"Yes," Shaikh replied.

"That's why now you maintain this incorrect pretext that there was some effort ... to mislead the youths as to the purpose of the cleaning up the camp," shouted Neander.

But Shaikh remained steadfast yesterday that alleged ringleaders had concocted an innocent explanation for the camp and that the teens had no idea its intended purpose was to prepare jihadi warriors.

Defence lawyer Mitchell Chernovsky pointed out to Shaikh that the Crown had suggested he lied under oath.

"I seek refuge with Allah for such an implication," said Shaikh, denying the charge.

Another area of dispute revolved around who was present during a speech by the alleged ringleader in which he said "we're not officially part of Al Qaeda but we share their principles and methods."

Initially, Shaikh testified that everyone at the camp was present during the Al Qaeda comment, yet later said he wasn't sure who was listening.

Yesterday he changed his tune again, saying the Al Qaeda comment may not even have been part of the inflammatory speech and said he didn't know who heard it.

Shaikh was a police informant who infiltrated the group before it was busted in a massive police sweep in the summer of 2006, when 14 adults and four youths were arrested. Of the original 18, only 11 still face charges.

Time to move demos out of Washington DC

Cops with rifles to hit streets this summer

By David C. Lipscomb
May 9, 2008

Metropolitan Police Department officials said yesterday patrol officers will be issued assault rifles by the summer, after policies on their use are released this month.

The Washington Times reported Wednesday that the department is arming the officers with the rifles as part of a national trend to protect them from criminals with increasingly powerful weapons.

Assistant Chief Joshua Ederheimer said the department has spent the past year converting 500 AR-15 rifles from fully-automatic to semi-automatic and drafting training curriculum and policies governing the weapons.

"We didn't want to rush these out on the street," he said. "I think the department acted prudently."

Police in Miami and Los Angeles already use the weapons, and Chicago police have plans to use them in the near future.

Prince George's and Montgomery counties also give officers the option of carrying them.

Chief Ederheimer said the department has 352 officer trained to use the weapons and is prepared to train more, despite criticism from the police union that some tactical officers who already carry the weapons have been unable to get re-certified to use them.

Officer Scott Fike, a canine handler, said his certification for the AR-15 expired in the past three months and was told he cannot re-qualify because the department does not have ammunition.

Officer Fike, speaking for the union that represents D.C. officers, said he is concerned about special police units, which already have the weapons, because if those officers cannot get re-certified they must surrender their weapons.

"If [special units] don't have them, that just cuts deeper into them not having them in the streets," he said.

Kristopher Baumann, chairman of the labor committee that represents D.C. officers, also expressed concern about the department's repeated delays in distributing the weapons.

Chief Ederheimer acknowledged the department has no practice ammunition, but said higher-quality street ammunition is instead being used and that no certifications have been cancelled. He also said the program started more recently than five years ago, with the military-surplus guns arriving in spring 2007.

D.C. Council member Phil Mendelson, at large Democrat, said he would not oppose the decision to use assault rifles, but is skeptical that criminals are using more powerful weapons."I don't think the firepower has gotten much higher," said Mr. Mendelson who heads the council's committee on public safety.
"I think it's an easy argument to make to justify more armaments."
The department did not respond for a second day to a request for data on the types of weapons used in crimes in the District.Concerns about D.C. officers using excessive force surfaced after the city lowered standards in police recruiting in 1989 and 1990.City officers fatally shot 12 people in 1998, and the department led the country in fatal shootings in the 1990s.

However, the number of fatal police-involved shootings was five or fewer each year from 1999 to 2006, according to a report from the D.C. police department.

Last month, the department qualified to end a seven-year, voluntary Justice Department oversight of incidents in which officers used their weapons or other forms of force in the line of duty. The department is now investigating the conduct of two officers who this month were exonerated by federal investigators in the fatal shooting of 14-year-old DeOnte Rawlings, whom they suspected in the theft of a mini-bike.

Evidence That Stun Guns May Stimulate The Heart

Evidence That Stun Guns May Stimulate The Heart

Science Daily
Posted: 2008-05-02 17:52:03

On the eve of the British Columbia inquiry into the death of Robert Dziekanski, a review of scientific data in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) finds that in some cases, stun guns may stimulate the heart in experimental models. This evidence is contrary to current views that stun guns only affect skeletal muscles.

"The frequency and the shape of the pulses generated by stun guns are designed to incapacitate the target by electrically overwhelming his or her control of these muscles," state Dr. K. Nanthakumar and colleagues. "In principle, these pulses are designed to act only on skeletal muscles and to not affect internal organs such as the heart." The evidence that stun guns do not stimulate the heart is based on "...theoretical studies [that] suggest that stun guns cannot deliver the amount of energy required to stimulate the heart or cause ventricular fibrillation."

Dr. Nanthakumar and collegues point out that most theoretical and some experimental studies reveal that cardiac stimulation does not occur with stun gun discharges. However, experimental studies on pigs by 3 independent groups of investigators found that "a stun gun discharge can stimulate the heart" depending on the location of the stun gun barbs. Barbs that are located such that they form a vector across the heart have greater effect than those focused on the abdomen. In one study, swine blood pressure was abruptly lost after discharge of a stun gun, and another study "reported the deaths of 2 animals caused by ventricular fibrillation immediately after the stun gun discharge....This suggests that sufficient current density was produced by the stun gun to stimulate the heart, which according to theory should not and could not occur."

The researchers caution against applying data from pigs to humans, although "most of the basic mechanistic concepts in cardiac fibrillation and defibrillation are derived from animal studies, not humans."

Recently, there have been several deaths after the use of stun guns, including Robert Dziekanski in Richmond, British Columbia, a Montréal, Quebec man and 24 year-old Chicago, Illionois resident, Kevin Piskura. More than 300 deaths following stun gun use have been documented, 20 of them in Canada.

Regarding arrhythmias long after the discharge of the stun gun, Dr. Nanthakumar, Dr. Paul Dorian and colleagues conclude "...there is no conclusive evidence to show whether stun gun stimulation (under certain electrophysical conditions) can result in cardiac arrhythmias late after stun gun discharge. With regards to deleterious effects on the heart during the discharge they state "In our view, it is inappropriate to conclude that stun gun discharges cannot lead to adverse cardiac consequences in all real world settings."

On March 11 a new documentary was aired on French television (ARTE – French-German cultural tv channel) by French journalist and film maker Marie-Monique Robin, The World According to Monsanto - A documentary that Americans won't ever see.

The gigantic biotech corporation Monsanto is threatening to destroy the agricultural biodiversity which has served mankind for thousands of years.

How to Order "The World According to Monsanto/Le Monde Selon Monsanto"

Everyone in the organic and anti-GMO movement has been raving about the film "Le Monde Selon Monsanto/The World According to Monsanto," by Marie-Monique Robin.

But recently it was taken off of YouTube and Google Video with the explanation that the Film Board of Canada's copyright was being violated. Anybody feel kind of funny about that?

Anyway, sites keep popping up where you can watch the film, sometimes whole, sometimes in pieces. The latest place to view the film is here, but this might not last too long.

In order to not break any laws, and to support the film's makers, the best way to get to see this film is to order it. And here's how:

Click here to visit ARTE Boutique, a French website. This is the only place to buy this film. This website is in French and you will be ordering in Euros. The film costs 14,99 euros, or around $22. This seems a little daunting if you don't know how to speak French, but it's really not too hard.

Once you have found the film on this site, click on the button that says "Ajouter au Panier." This means the same as "Add to Cart" on English-speaking websites. This will take you to your shopping cart. You will have to choose the country you want it delivered to. "Etats-Unis" is United States. "Royaume-Uni" is United Kingdom. Then you must click the button that says "Terminer ma Commande" for checkout.

This takes you to another page. You are most likely a new customer on this site, so select "Je suis un nouveau client" and hit the button "m'inscrire."

This will take you to a registration page. This is pretty similar to an English-language website, so you can figure it out pretty easy.

"Nom" means name, specifically your last name. "Prenom" is your first name. "Votre courriel" is your email. "Mot de passe" is your password, and you have to confirm both. Everything else should be pretty self-explanatory.

"Adresse de Facturation" is your billing address. "Adresse de Livraison" is delivery address.

You probably don't want to subscribe to their newsletters unless you know French, so don't check the boxes at the bottom of the page.

The next page will be where you enter your credit card information.

Good luck! This may seem like a lot of work to buy a film, but we assure you, it is completely worth it. This film is highly educational, and showcases many of the hardworking folks in our movement who have been campaigning for years against Monsanto. The OCA isn't specifically mentioned, but every time Marie-Monique does an internet search we are listed in the results she is finding because we have such a huge compilation of articles on our website.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has requested nearly $2.3 billion in federal earmarks for 2009, almost three times the largest amount received by a single senator this year.
The Democratic presidential candidate’s staggering request comes at a time when Congress remains engaged in a heated debate over spending federal dollars on parochial projects.

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION

It is frightening these days in Ontario to keep up a blog with integrity.

The Conservative Party bigwigs have been here to visit - I've seen them come and read the items.

Garth Turner continues to stick up for the Canadian in his open webblog where I often post.

I've called my MP's office and got the brush off - but I will be calling her again TODAY and explaining why I am afraid, very afrad.

Garth Turner has big friends and money and HE's afraid and has moved into hiding. I am a sitting target having posted there. I know it is so too.

Please read all this thoroughly and try to digest it. This is the state of Canada today. Totally fascistic and the Conservative Party bully boys are still handling all "national security" issue. You are basically taking your own life in your hands if you criticise them, imho.

Sad to say, but posting publically on this blog is no longer an option until such time as the Liberals have these crooks arrested and EXPOSED.

The party in New Orleans against the SPP, I hope, was a good one when Harper went to pay his respects to the grand scheme of the Neocons.

Until I definitely know that someone is watching my back here in Canada, I am not posting anymore and to me that is a crying shame.

To the Conservatives who come by here and the security agencies, I say shame on you.

This is not the way to spend taxpayer dollars and your children will be ashamed of you. Whoever in Thornhill that drops by using an anonymous ISP to threaten me, I say, you will be sorry in the end when there is no one left to defend YOU and YOUR CHILDREN.

Canadian Politics

As this is a current affairs blog, written and moderated by a politician, you have to expect people will be frank and forceful in what they say. Some will be mindlessly critical and blindly political.

Because I am a politician who was re-elected as a Conservative, was kicked out of his lifelong party by the prime minister of Canada, sat for months as an Indie, who 14 months ago joined the Liberal caucus, and so far has survived all attempts on his political life, well, expect a crap storm.

And I do. Regular readers see posted in the long, daily comments sections a variety of opinions, many of them passionately held and sharply critical of me and my colleagues. What you do not see, however, is what I do not post.

I’ve made every attempt possible not to censor what Canadians want to say, but that task grows increasingly difficult. Since I am the only MP who runs a daily blog with a wide-open comment section, the temptation is great for political foes to show up, don a blanket of anonymity and then spew. Most of that, I allow. When it becomes a mere ad hominen dump, shredding me for just being lovable me, and not advancing the argument, the comment is not posted. When it tells me what to do with the various orifices in my body, no post. When it talks about my house, wife, dog, car, there is no post.

But I do aggregate blocked comments and store them by date and IP address. I checked this morning, and currently have 320 pages’ worth which have been set aside in just a few months. Some are massively disturbing, and they’ve been provided to the RCMP and the Halton Regional Police Force. I did so with reluctance and sadness. But when increasingly violent words are used against me by identifiable individuals, well, screw it. Those who abuse digital democracy and turn it into digital bullying need a serious whack.

I might add that after photos of my home in Campbellville were published several times on a Halton-based anti-Garth web site run by local Conservatives, accompanied by email threats to my dog, Cheka, I moved. My current address in the riding is a secret, even from Esther. It’s just a regrettable reality such an action was necessary.

Well, all this is just to alert you that if you send in a comment calling me a dickhead, it will not appear, unless you give a reason why I am a dickhead. And I’d naturally prefer “Honourable Dickhead.” Thanks.

Canada Post seeks bigger subsidy to compensate for free MP mailouts

OTTAWA — Canada Post launched a project last year that tracked the burgeoning number of free mailouts enjoyed by members of Parliament to help bolster the corporation's claims for a bigger government subsidy.

Newly released documents show the project, dubbed Six Sigma, was designed to demonstrate that the post office is losing millions of dollars as MPs and political parties crank up the controversial mailouts.

Canada Post "is now in a position to more accurately quantify the volumes and foregone revenue associated with government free mail," says an internal discussion paper, obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.

But precise figures on rising post-office volumes and the mounting losses have been carefully removed from the documents, to protect "commercial confidentiality."

Opposition MPs have recently accused the Conservatives of abusing the privileges - and bending the rules - to carpet-bomb ridings with party messages, all on the taxpayer's dime. But the Liberals also acknowledge their own members are not entirely blameless.

Since 1986, Canada Post has received an annual subsidy to compensate the corporation for stamp-free mail sent to or from the Governor General, senators, MPs and officers of Parliament. The subsidy also covers free mailing of materials for the blind.

The initial $14-million annual subsidy was fixed until 2000, when repeated complaints from the post office about an $8.7-million annual shortfall prompted Treasury Board to boost the level to $22.2 million a year.

Cost-conscious postal officials are back again, saying they have proof of more large shortfalls that have grown over the last eight years.

The corporation carefully tracked the number of items MPs sent out to Canadian households through the House of Commons post office over the period January to July 2007.

The project did not try to capture all free mail, such as letters sent by constituents directly to MPs' riding offices. But the results nevertheless demonstrated a dramatic and costly rise in no-charge mailouts from parties and MPs.

A spokesman for Canada Post declined to provide any information about mail volumes, about the Six Sigma project, or about the negotiations with government for a fatter subsidy.

"Volume figures of our customers are proprietary information," said John Caines. "Any discussions we have with our customers, including the government, would be confidential."

But Caines did confirm the post office is pressing for compensation.

"We will be reviewing our findings with the government to establish the actual amount of foregone revenue and come to a resolution as how to deal with that."

Relief will not arrive soon: Transport Canada, which oversees the post office, has budgeted another flat $22.2-million subsidy for 2008-2009.

The internal documents show that the initial $14 million subsidy in the late 1980s was split, with $3 million for materials for the blind and $11 million for so-called government free-mail.

Caines declined to say how the current $22.2-million subsidy is split but if the 1980s ratio held, more than $16 million would be currently earmarked for government free-mail.

The documents also reveal a rise in mail volumes processed by the House of Commons mailroom, from 48 million pieces in 1997 to almost 75 million in 2005.

"Volumes have been increasing steadily year over year," says an internal analysis. "(It) fluctuates depending on number of days Parliament is in session, and whether an election is held in the year."

The House of Commons postal service does not make its annual reports public, and a spokeswoman referred questions about volumes to Canada Post, which has declined to release them.

The secretive Commons panel that polices mail-room rules plans to examine the free-mail policy.

"I absolutely would defend to the death a member of Parliament's right to talk to, communicate with and get feedback from their own constituents," said Liberal MP Karen Redman, a member of the Board of Internal Economy which is reviewing the practice.

"But you don't blanket a postal walk. It's a shotgun approach that I think is being abused."

Tory House Leader Peter Van Loan notes that his party normally uses bulk mail - "unaddressed admail," in post office parlance - that costs less than a penny an item to send. The other parties have confirmed they tend to use addressed "franked" mail, using mailing lists, which costs 54 cents for each piece.

"You do the math on which party is the most cost effective in its external mailings," Van Loan said.

The released post-office records show that in 2004-2005, an estimated 65 million pieces of cheap bulk mail moved through the House of Commons mailroom, compared with 9.4 million pieces of addressed regular mail in the same period.

Liberal MP Garth Turner has claimed the Tories posted between 30 million and 50 million pieces of bulk free-mail in the first three months of this year. Conservative spokesmen say the numbers are inflated and that, in any case, all the rules have been respected.

The name Six Sigma was borrowed from a standard business methodology that reviews customer relations and other factors to boost profits.

And here’s the story…

On Sunday afternoon at 3 pm I told you that Conservatives would be meeting quietly with selected media later in the day to spin their side of the RCMP raid and (I was told) spill some of the contents of the 700-page Elections Canada search warrant. My sources were correct, and a handful of reporters did in fact speak with party brass, the most notable official being Doug Finley, the director of political operations and Stephen Harper’s right-hand guy when it comes to spin, control and campaign. (He is also the husband of Immigration Minister Diane Finley.)

Below are some of the stories which resulted. Conservatives have tried to soften the blow of Monday’s headlines, which report that Elections Canada is indeed alleging the party broke the country’s electoral law in the narrowly-won 2006 election. Tories overspent by more than a million dollars, the regulator says, and sought to bury national money in local campaigns, yielding 67 riding associations larger taxpayer-funded reimbursements than would otherwise have been the case.

Senior Conservatives are not disputing the investigation, the allegations or the scandal itself. Instead, they are attacking the law.

Just what you’d expect from the law-and-order party. One rule for us, another for them.

Tories on defensive over Elections Canada raid

Conservatives held secret meetings with select reporters Sunday to reveal details about why Elections Canada officers raided their Ottawa headquarters — and to give their side of the story before court documents are released this week. The party showed CTV News the court application for a search warrant, which confirmed that Elections Canada officials and RCMP were looking for evidence of an “alleged scheme” by Tories to spend more than allowed on election advertising.

The document alleges the Conservatives violated the Elections Act “by incurring election expenses that exceeded the election expense spending limit” by $1.1 million. It also alleges that 67 Tory candidates “improperly” sought taxpayer-funded rebates on expenses they did not incur.

An Ontario judge ordered the application to be unsealed last Friday, but court officials had said they would be unable to make the document public until Monday at the earliest. Conservatives obtained their own copy of the application and contacted a limited number of journalists to discuss the search warrant Sunday.

They scheduled briefings at an Ottawa hotel, but when word of the meetings leaked out to other media organizations, the party moved the briefings to another hotel next to their party headquarters. Party officials then spoke about the search warrant for roughly 45 minutes, saying the party did nothing wrong and that they had followed all regulations in election spending, before showing reporters the court document.

RCMP conducted the search on Tory headquarters last week, seizing a long list of financial and correspondence records that included invoices, receipts and emails. Conservatives insisted Sunday that other parties had acted in a similar way during federal elections and they followed all regulations in election spending.

The party has alleged the raid was a reaction to a civil lawsuit against Elections Canada, and that it was possibly timed to delay Conservative lawyers from questioning Elections Canada officials. Elections Canada has refused to reimburse the Tories for more than $1 million in advertising spending during the last election. The agency contends that the Tories surpassed their national advertising allowance and refused to accept the Tory claims that local ads were not national in scope.

Damage control

Looks like the Harper party is about to attempt some damage control this sunny Sunday.

Selected media folks were summoned to a closed-door session with Conservative poohbahs to discuss the RCMP raid, the elections financing fiasco and the contents of the 700-page search warrant due to be officially released to the world tomorrow. The location: Ottawa’s Lord Elgin hotel, just a few steps south of the Langevin Block, home of the PMO. The time: 4:30 pm.

Speculation has it that the party will be leaking the guts of the warrant, putting the best spin on it, and trying to mute the wall-to-wall coverage that this thing will get when all reporters secure a copy. It’s an old news trick - easing the negative media blow by giving the worst news to the most supportive journalists.

But, it may backfire. Earlier this afternoon, word of the clandestine briefing leaked out as key reporters like CBC’s Keith Boag and CTV’s Mike Duffy suddenly became aware they’d be on the wrong side of a locked door. That’s when the Conservative switchboard lit up, and the last I heard, the Tories were mousing around frantically for a new secret location.

Just another day of your open, accessible and accountable government at work.

My letter to Garth tonight. And no I am not kidding.

Garth, you can take this comment off if you like, but I am asking you for some kind of immediate attention. Due to posting here I have Conservative Party hacks crawling all over my blog. I see them come and go on my sitemeter.

I want to be able to post my comments openly with the intent of making Canada a better place, but now I am truly scared to death. I called my MP’s office, Carolyn Baker, and asked for an appointment and got no return call, but due to my circumstances in coming to Canada in the first instance and the subsequent things that have happened, I really need FEDERAL level support when I get into trouble. I am disabled and don’t have funds to move. I am being prevented from moving.

I am asking that you help me, seriously.
The people in power are total beasts as I have said so many times.

I am hoping for some true HONESTY to emerge on Monday, but who knows how long that will take with a press that swiftboats Stephane Dion?

I have a phone number but would really Party who is going to care. Believe it or not, I am internationally known for telling the TRUTH.

I was orginally given protection by Doug Peters, but now I have no one. I really have suffered enough indignity to last a life time. And I NEED HELP not apathy as I face this perilous chapter of my life.

Thanks,
Virgina
and yes, I have a phone number but no job and can’t move away. As of today, I have taken my blog down entirely - so much for free speech in Canada. The minority fascists in residence in Ottawa must be fought tooth and nail. They are a menace to all of mankind.
See that these guys get marched off to jail.
Their police state apparatus must NOT be set up in Canada.
I’d post your last columns to OpEd News, but my computer strangely went on the blitz this weekend and posting anything in North America about Canada or the US has been impossible on certain websites for me. I could not post comment on the NYT either! First time THAT has happened. I do not wonder why that has happened. I happen to KNOW about GENEVA and have called WAR CRIMINALS by their true name many many times.
Please remember, I have stood up internationally for Stephen Dion in publications outside Canada; I am known for such. It is frightening to see just how things have been maniopulated that the freedom of North America rests on this one man, Stephane Dion and those who support him; but there you go, it is so.
I pray for him and you daily. Please do not let all of us “little people” down.
I truly hope The Harper annd Bush got a nice warm greeting in NOLA. Who’s to know? Ya can’t trust the press.
I fear martial law may be declared tomorrow with the TTC strike being calle, I am that paranoid and have Blackwater guys all over my back for the past two weeks.
Seriously, I am begging to hear from you.

John McCain on the NAU (worse than BuZh)

McCain Supports North American Integration,

League of Democracies

Published on Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

Source: IntelStrike - Daniel Taylor

“Ours can be the first completely democratic hemisphere, where trade is free across all borders, where the rule of law and the power of free markets advance the security and prosperity of all.”

Republican Presidential candidate John McCain has openly declared his supportive stance on the Security and Prosperity Partnership in a March 2008 speech to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.

An article by Kat McConnell on The Conservative Voice website comments on McCain’s statements,
“McCain’s World Affairs speech must rightfully be considered his “coming out” speech in which he unflinchingly revealed his true globalist nature and his mission as a foot soldier in the New World Order.”

McCain’s March 2008 World Affairs Council speech stated in part,
“With globalization, our hemisphere has grown closer, more integrated, and more interdependent. Latin America today is increasingly vital to the fortunes of the United States. Americans north and south share a common geography and a common destiny. The countries of Latin America are the natural partners of the United States, and our northern neighbor Canada.
Relations with our southern neighbors must be governed by mutual respect, not by an imperial impulse or by anti-American demagoguery. The promise of North, Central, and South American life is too great for that. I believe the Americas can and must be the model for a new twenty-first century relationship between North and South. Ours can be the first completely democratic hemisphere, where trade is free across all borders, where the rule of law and the power of free markets advance the security and prosperity of all.”

John McCain’s globalist stance also came to light in a speech he gave to the Hoover Institution. A transcript for this speech is carried on the Council on Foreign Relations website. Going further than just a more “integrated” and “interdependent” North America, McCain stated in the May 2007 speech that he desires a
“…worldwide League of Democracies”
that would form an
“…international order of peace based on freedom.”
The new league would accompany the United Nations. He stated,
“This League of Democracies would not supplant the United Nations or other international organizations. It would complement them. But it would be the one organization where the world’s democracies could come together to discuss problems and solutions on the basis of shared principles and a common vision of the future. If I am elected president, I will call a summit of the world’s democracies in my first year to seek the views of my democratic counterparts and begin exploring the practical steps necessary to realize this vision.”

A McCain presidency will surely bring more globalist policy and a further move towards North American Integration and world governance. These policies are becoming increasingly unpopular, however. Globalist think tanks have admitted that the United States remains the largest obstacle to building a North American Community. Will a new president succeed in selling these plans to America?

Operation Falcon and the Looming Police State

By Mike Whitney

02/26/07 "ICH" --- - On 29th June, 1934, Chancellor Adolph Hitler, accompanied by the Schutzstaffel (SS), arrived at Wiesse, where he personally arrested the leader of the Strum Abteilung (SA), Ernnst Roehm. During the next 24 hours 200 other senior SA officers were arrested on the way to Wiesse. Many were shot as soon as they were captured but Hitler decided to pardon Roehm because of his past service to the movement. However, after much pressure from Hermann Goering and Heinrich Himmler, Hitler agreed that Roehm should die. At first Hitler insisted that Roehm should be allowed to commit suicide but, when he refused, Roehm was shot by two SS men. (Spartacus.schoolnet.co)

Later, Hitler delivered a speech at the Reichstag in which he justified the murders of his rivals saying:

"If anyone reproaches me and asks why I did not resort to the regular courts of justice, then all I can say is this: In this hour I was responsible for the fate of the German people, and thereby I became the supreme judge of the German people. It was no secret that this time the revolution would have to be bloody; when we spoke of it we called it 'The Night of the Long Knives.' Everyone must know for all future time that if he raises his hand to strike the State, then certain death is his lot."

The Night of the Long Knives is seen by many as the turning point where Hitler made it clear that he was above the law and the supreme leader of the German people.

Operation Falcon: Blueprint for removing dissidents and political rivals

The Bush administration has carried out three massive sweeps in the last two years, rolling up more than 30,000 minor crooks and criminals, without as much as a whimper of protest from the public.

Operation Falcon is the clearest indication yet that the Bush administration is fine-tuning its shock-troops so it can roll up tens of thousands of people at a moment’s notice and toss them into the newly-built Halliburton detention centers. This should be a red flag for anyone who cares at all about human rights, civil liberties, or simply saving his own skin.

Operation Falcon was allegedly the brainchild of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and his counterpart in the US Marshal's office, (Director) Ben Reyna. But its roots go much deeper into the nexus of right-wing Washington think tanks where fantasies of autocratic government have a long history. The name, Falcon, is an acronym for “Federal and Local Cops Organized Nationally.” It relates to the more than 960 state, local and federal agencies which are directly involved in the administration’s expansive criminal dragnets.

Typically, law enforcement agencies are protective of their own turf and wary of outside intervention. The Falcon program overrides these concerns by streamlining the information-sharing processes and setting up a chain-of-command structure that radiates from the Justice Department. This removes many of the traditional obstacles to agency interface. It also relocates the levers of power in Washington where thy can be manned by members of the Bush administration.

Dictatorships require strong centralized authority and the Falcon program is a logical corollary of that ambition. It creates new inroads for Bush to assume greater control over the nationwide police-state apparatus. That alone should be sufficient reason for alarm.

The first Operation Falcon took place during the week of April 4 to April 10, 2005. According to the US Marshal’s official website, “The emphasis centered on gang related crimes, homicides, crimes involving use of a weapon, crimes against children and the elderly, crimes involving sexual assaults, organized crime and drug related fugitives, and other crimes of violence.” More than 10,000 criminal suspects were arrested in a matter of days. It was the largest criminal sweep in the nation’s history and, according to U.S. Marshall chief Ben Reyna, “produced the largest number of arrests ever recorded during a single initiative.” The Washington Times noted, “The sweep was a virtual clearinghouse for warrants on drug, gang, gun and sex-offender suspects nationwide.”

The emphasis was clearly on quantity not quality.

Still, this doesn’t explain why state and federal agencies had to be integrated with local law enforcement simply to carry out routine police work.

More importantly, it doesn’t explain why local police ignored their duty to protect the public just so they could coordinate with outside agencies. According to one report “162 accused or convicted of murder” were picked up in the first sweep. That means that the police knowingly left murderers on the street and put the public at risk while they orchestrated their raids with federal agencies.

That’s irresponsible. It also suggests that there may be a more sinister motive behind the program than just ensuring public safety. The plan appears to have been devised to enhance the powers of the “unitary” executive by putting state and local law enforcement under federal supervision. Once again, it’s an attempt by the administration to extend its grip to the state and local level. We saw a similar strategy unfold after Hurricane Katrina when the Bush administration used the tragedy to seize control of local police and National Guard units so they could establish de facto martial law. Troops, armored vehicles and mercenaries were deployed to New Orleans to fight lawlessness and looting even though desperate people were still stranded on their rooftops waiting for food, water and medical attention.

Operation FALCON II was another massive dragnet which covered the western half of the country and focused primarily on “violent sex offenders”. The raids took place from April 17-23, and succeeded in apprehending 9,037 alleged fugitives. The US Marshals web site boasts that the operation “took some of the country's most dangerous wanted criminals off the streets and made America's communities safer”.

Nonsense. Despite the claims of success, only 462 “violent sex crime” suspects were arrested, along with 1,094 “unregistered sex offenders” and other minor “sex crime” suspects. That leaves 7,481 suspects who were rounded up for other unrelated reasons.

Who are they and what crime did they commit? Were these drug violations, dads who were delinquent on child-support payments, traffic tickets, jay-walking?!?

7,481 people who were incarcerated are unaccounted by the government’s estimate. This means that the bulk of them were probably undocumented workers who were shunted off to the INS (Immigration and Naturalization) or dispatched to Cheney’s tent-city gulags in western Texas. (See: Democracy Now “Human Rights Groups Call for Closure of Texas Jail Holding Undocumented Immigrants” 2-23-07)

Similar inconsistencies appear in “Operation FALCON III, which covered the eastern half of the country from October 22 - 28, 2006.” State, local and federal police-units arrested 10,773 fugitives; including 1,659 sex offenders, 971 unregistered sex offenders, 364 gang members, 140 homicide suspects, and 3,609 drug violations. Once again, the US Marshal’s official tally doesn’t pencil out. This time, 4,030 extra people were rounded up without any further explanation.

Who are they and have they been charged with a crime?

Furthermore, sex offenders, drug users and gang-bangers are not what we normally consider “some of the country's most dangerous wanted criminals”. In fact, there are indications that the great majority of these people are not violent at all. For example, of the 30,110 total fugitives who were apprehended in all three Falcon sweeps, a measly 586 firearms were seized.

Clearly, the people who were arrested for the most part were not “armed and dangerous” nor were they a serious threat to public safety. They were probably just the unwitting victims of an overzealous US Marshals office and an ideologically-driven Justice Department.

So, what was the real impetus for the Falcon raids? Was it just a bean-counting exercise to see how many people would fit in the back of a Paddy-wagon or are they a dress rehearsal for future crackdowns on potential enemies of the state?

Bogus News Reports

The Falcon operation illustrates the incestuous relationship between the media and the state. They are two wings on the same plane. The Justice Department provided the TV networks with official footage of policemen and government agents raiding homes and handcuffing suspects; and the media dutifully aired the video on stations across the country. The scenes were accompanied by a reassuring commentary lauding the administration’s new crime fighting strategies and linking homeland security with the nebulous war on terror.

Attorney General Gonzales told reporters, “Operation FALCON is an excellent example of President Bush’s direction and the Justice Department’s dedication to deal both with the terrorist threat and traditional violent crime.” He added, “This joint effort shows the commitment of our federal, state, and local partners to make our neighborhoods safer, and it has led to the highest number of arrests ever recorded for a single initiative of its kind.”

So far, not one of the more than 30,000 victims has been charged with a terror-related crime.

The media-hype surrounding the raids has been celebratory and uniform; cookie-cutter articles appeared throughout the US press (most of them unsourced) highlighting the cooperation between the divers agencies while providing an upbeat account of what amounts to police repression. Thousands of nearly identical articles appeared in the nation’s newspapers which seem to have been authored by high-ranking officials at Homeland Security and protĂ©gĂ©s of George Orwell; although the difference between the two is far from certain.

Even stranger, most of the articles in the mainstream media can no longer be retrieved via a Google search. They seem to have vanished into the black-hole of Homeland propaganda.

No matter. If the media was supposed to make Gestapo-like crackdowns look like normal police operations; they succeeded admirably. Mission accomplished.

Former Governor of Louisiana, Huey Long once opined, “When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in an American flag.” Indeed, he could have added that the corporate media will gladly provide the flag and the public relations campaign as they have with Falcon.

Falcon; new drills for a new world order

The Falcon operations can only be understood in the broader context of the ongoing assault on the constitutional system of checks and balances; including the repeal of habeas corpus, warrantless wiretaps and searches, and the use of torture.

For the last 6 years, the Bush administration has been busy dismantling the legal safeguards which protect the citizen from the arbitrary and, oftentimes, ruthless actions of the state. To that end, detention camps are being prepared by Halliburton within the U.S., secret courts have been established which deny due process of law, American citizens are arrested without charge, law enforcement is increasingly militarized, and the media has strengthened its alliance with the central government.

Additionally, in October 2006, George Bush quietly changed the Insurrection Act, which prevented the President from deploying troops inside the United States. Bush’s revision effectively overturns the Posse Comitatus Act which put strict limits on the executive’s power to use US troops in domestic situations. Just days earlier Bush signed a similar bill, "The John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" which gives Bush the power to take command of National Guard units across the country which are traditionally under the control of the state governors.

Without fanfare, Bush has taken control of all armed forces and militias inside and outside of the country and now has a monopoly on all the state-sanctioned tools of organized violence. It’s a coup that could never have succeeded without the tacit cooperation of the media.

Bush is now free to declare martial law in response to a natural disaster, a pandemic or a terrorist attack. The congress is powerless to stop him.

Also, Bush recently signed the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which allows the president to arbitrarily declare citizens and non citizens “enemy combatants” and imprison them indefinitely without charge. The new law gives Bush the authority to disregard the Geneva Conventions and the 8th amendment’s ban on “cruel and unusual” punishment and apply “harsh interrogation” which may include torture. The act effectively repeals habeas corpus, the cornerstone of American jurisprudence and the Bill of Rights.

The Military Commissions Act cannot coexist with the US Constitution; the two are mutually exclusive.

The Military Commissions Act, The John Warner Defense Authorization Act, the Homeland Security Act, the Patriot Act, and the myriad presidential signing statements have conferred absolute power on George Bush. The question is whether or not some incident will arise that will persuade Bush to use his extraordinary new powers.

General Tommy Franks predicted that a “massive, casualty producing event” might cause “our population to question our own Constitution and begin to militarize our country;” a scenario that many see as likely now.

Is that it? Will another terrorist attack provide the rationale for overturning republican government and declaring martial law?

If so, then we should know what to expect.

According to FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) it would mean “the suspension of the normal functions of civilian government, implying the cancellation or postponement of state and federal elections.” (Global Research) It would also “close public and government facilities not critical for continuity of essential operations.” (FEMA)

Northern Command would assume control and under “the classified 'Continuity of Government” (COG) Operations Plan' a secret 'shadow government' would become functional, redeploying key staff to secret locations.” (Global Research)

Also, “all forms of public gatherings or citizen's protests which question the legitimacy of the emergency procedures and the installation of a police state” would be banned. The military would be deployed to carry out “police and judicial” functions.

Martial law in the US would be applied with the utmost attention to public sensibilities and perceptions, avoiding the garish display of force we see in Iraq. It would be a “kinder and gentler” martial law with a limited number of military personnel on the streets (just enough to remind us that things have changed) and an emphasis on “preemptive” policing operations. (Expect Falcons’ 4, 5 and 6 etc) It would probably be disguised by a carefully crafted public relations campaign and a predictably cheery moniker, such as, “The Security Enhancement and Homeland Fortification Act”. The possibilities are limitless.

The Bush administration is also prepared if some unforeseen tragedy befalls congress, like another anthrax attack.

In fact, the American Enterprise Institute, to which the Bush team is closely aligned, has already "issued proposals for the operation of Congress following a catastrophic terrorist attack". They advocate the "APPOINTING" of individuals to the House of Representatives "to fill the seats of dead or incapacitated members, a first in American history" "The Continuity of Government Commission is self-commissioned', its members being neither elected nor appointed by any government body and mostly made up of professional lobbyists". (Read the whole article: http://www.conservativeusa.org/cog-ronpaul.htm) (Coincidentally, Newsweek article “White House Rehearses for Domestic Attack” 2-23-07; “The White House is staging a high-level exercise Saturday to test responses to the prospect of a massive domestic terrorist attack.” These drills are a critical part of the C.O.G. regimen dating back to the Reagan administration)

According to the AEI’s plan, the future United States congress will be comprised of lobbyists and industry representatives. What else would one expect from an organization that believes that corporate interests should determine policy?

These are the chilling precedents which have paved the way for further government lawlessness and abuse. They foreshadow the ominous transition from representative government to autocratic rule; from inalienable rights to martial law.

The Falcon operations are just a small part of this larger paradigm. The program is not designed for rounding up minor crooks and drug dealers, (which no one really cares about anyway) but for removing leftists, dissidents and political rivals. These are the real targets. The power of the state is measured in terms of how effectively it defeats or eliminates its enemies. And, the Bush administration has shown a remarkable aptitude for crushing its rivals.

The Crawford Fuehrer

One day, after a particularly savage domestic purge; we can expect President Bush to stride to the presidential podium and reiterate the same words that were uttered by his German predecessor 60 years ago:

"If anyone reproaches me and asks why I did not resort to the regular courts of justice, then all I can say is this: In this hour I was responsible for the fate of the American people, and thereby I became the supreme judge of the American people….Everyone must know for all future time that if he raises his hand to strike the State, then certain death is his lot."

Spy-in-the-sky drone sets sights on Miami

By Tom Brown

MIAMI (Reuters) - Miami police could soon be the first in the United States to use cutting-edge, spy-in-the-sky technology to beef up their fight against crime.

A small pilotless drone manufactured by Honeywell International, capable of hovering and "staring" using electro-optic or infrared sensors, is expected to make its debut soon in the skies over the Florida Everglades.

If use of the drone wins Federal Aviation Administration approval after tests, the Miami-Dade Police Department will start flying the 14-pound (6.3 kg) drone over urban areas with an eye toward full-fledged employment in crime fighting.

"Our intentions are to use it only in tactical situations as an extra set of eyes," said police department spokesman Juan Villalba.

"We intend to use this to benefit us in carrying out our mission," he added, saying the wingless Honeywell aircraft, which fits into a backpack and is capable of vertical takeoff and landing, seems ideally suited for use by SWAT teams in hostage situations or dealing with "barricaded subjects."

Miami-Dade police are not alone, however.

Taking their lead from the U.S. military, which has used drones in Iraq and Afghanistan for years, law enforcement agencies across the country have voiced a growing interest in using drones for domestic crime-fighting missions.

Known in the aerospace industry as UAVs, for unmanned aerial vehicles, drones have been under development for decades in the United States.

The CIA acknowledges that it developed a dragonfly-sized UAV known as the "Insectohopter" for laser-guided spy operations as long ago as the 1970s.

And other advanced work on robotic flyers has clearly been under way for quite some time.

"The FBI is experimenting with a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles," said Marcus Thomas, an assistant director of the bureau's Operational Technology Division.

"At this point they have been used mainly for search and rescue missions," he added. "It certainly is an up-and-coming technology and the FBI is researching additional uses for UAVs."

SAFETY, PRIVACY CONCERNS

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been flying drones over the Arizona desert and southwest border with Mexico since 2006 and will soon deploy one in North Dakota to patrol the Canadian border as well.

This month, Customs and Border Protection spokesman Juan Munoz Torres said the agency would also begin test flights of a modified version of its large Predator B drones, built by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, over the Gulf of Mexico.

Citing numerous safety concerns, the FAA -- the government agency responsible for regulating civil aviation -- has been slow in developing procedures for the use of UAVs by police departments.

"You don't want one of these coming down on grandma's windshield when she's on her way to the grocery store," said Doug Davis, the FAA's program manager for unmanned aerial systems.

He acknowledged strong interest from law enforcement agencies in getting UAVs up and running, however, and said the smaller aircraft particularly were likely to have a "huge economic impact" over the next 10 years.

Getting clearance for police and other civilian agencies to fly can't come soon enough for Billy Robinson, chief executive of Cyber Defense Systems Inc, a small start-up company in St. Petersburg, Florida. His company makes an 8-pound (3.6 kg) kite-sized UAV that was flown for a time by police in Palm Bay, Florida, and in other towns, before the FAA stepped in.

"We've had interest from dozens of law enforcement agencies," said Robinson. "They (the FAA) are preventing a bunch of small companies such as ours from becoming profitable," he said.

Some privacy advocates, however, say rules and ordinances need to be drafted to protect civil liberties during surveillance operations.

"There's been controversies all around about putting up surveillance cameras in public areas," said Howard Simon, Florida director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

"Technological developments can be used by law enforcement in a way that enhances public safety," he said.

"But every enhanced technology also contains a threat of further erosion of privacy."

The Honeywell Micro Air Vehicle or "Honeywell MAV" is seen during a flight test in this undated photograph taken at an undisclosed location. The MAV weighs 16 pounds when empty (dry) and 18 1/2 pounds when fully loaded with fuel (wet). It is 14 inches in diameter and 22 inches from the feet to the top of the MAV structure. Miami police could soon be the first in the United States to use cutting-edge, spy-in-the-sky technology to beef up their fight against crime.

The Sami al-Arian case really gets my "back up" .

Police State America: Sami Al-Arian’s Long Ordeal by Stephen Lendman

Dandelion Salad

by Stephen Lendman
Global Research, March 24, 2008

Sami Al-Arian is a political prisoner in Police State America. This article reviews his case briefly and updates it to the present.

Because of his faith, ethnicity and political activism, the Bush administration targeted Al-Arian for supporting “terrorism.” In fact, he’s a Palestinian refugee, distinguished professor and scholar, community leader and civil activist.

Nonetheless, the FBI harassed him for 11 years, arrested him on February 20, 2003, and falsely accused him of backing organizations fronting for Palestinian Islamic Jihad - a 1997 State Department-designated “Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).”

A week later, in spite of his many awards, impeccable credentials and tenured status, University of South Florida president Judy Genshaft fired him under right wing pressure.

Since February 20, 2003, Al-Arian has been imprisoned - first at Tampa, Florida’s Orient Road jail, then on to more than a dozen different maximum and other federal prison facilities. He’s currently on hunger strike at Warsaw, Virginia’s Northern Neck Regional jail after being transferred back March 18 from Butner, North Carolina’s medical prison.

Al-Arian’s trial began in June 2005 and was a travesty. It lasted six months, cost an estimated $50 million, and the prosecution called 80 witnesses, including Israeli intelligence agents and victims of suicide bombings to prejudice the jury. It introduced portions of hundreds of wiretapped phone calls from over a half million recorded; “evidence” from faxes, emails and what was seized from his home; quotes from his speeches and lectures; conferences, events and rallies he attended; articles he wrote; books he owned; magazines he edited; and various publications he read - all legal and in no way incriminating unless falsely twisted to appear that way.

After years of effort and millions spent, Al-Arian was exonerated. On December 6, 2005 after 13 days of deliberation, the jury acquitted him of all (eight) “terrorism” charges. They were deadlocked 10 - 2 for acquittal on nine others. All of them were false and unjust.

Nonetheless, within days, the Justice Department said it would re-try him on the lesser charges. His lawyers called it legal but a highly unusual move. At the same time and in secret, a plea bargain deal was struck. It stipulated:

– Al-Arian neither engaged in or had any knowledge of violent acts;

– that he would not be required to cooperate further with prosecutors; and

– that he would be released on time served and deported voluntarily to his country of choice.

In the meantime, Al-Arian remained in custody pending sentencing and deportation on May 1, 2006. He expected to be free and his ordeal ended. Instead, the presiding judge changed the deal. He sentenced Al-Arian to the maximum 57 months, gave him credit for time served, and ordered him held for the remaining 11 months, after which an April 2007 deportation would follow. Now it’s extended as explained below.

In October 2006, assistant prosecutor Gordon Kromberg violated plea bargain terms by subpoenaing Al-Arian before a grand jury. His defense attorneys tried to block it by citing his “no-grand jury cooperation” provision to prevent DOJ from springing a perjury-obstruction trap. Defense’s motion was denied, and on November 16 Al-Arian refused to testify and was held in contempt.

A month later, the grand jury expired, a new one was convened, and Al-Arian was again subpoenaed to testify. He continued to refuse, was held in contempt, and had his sentence increased without mitigation to April 7, 2008.

On March 3, 2008 Kromberg ordered Al-Arian before still another March 19 grand jury, three weeks before his scheduled release and deportation. On the same day, Al-Arian began a hunger strike against the government’s continued harassment. It’s his third one but is life-threatening for a man in his condition. He’s diabetic and needs regular sustenance to avoid serious health problems. His January through March, 2007 strike depleted one-fourth of his body weight, gravely harmed him, and ended only at the urging of his family.

He’s now 20 days into his latest fast, lost 30 pounds, is weakening, and his life is endangered. On March 12, Al-Arian was transferred to the Butner, North Carolina medical facility where treatment is poor, the staff indifferent, and in Al-Arian’s case hostile to a designated enemy of the state. On March 18, he was returned to Warsaw, Virginia’s Northern Neck Regional jail ahead of his third grand jury appearance. Again, he refused to testify, so he’ll likely face new contempt charges and continued confinement.

George Washington University Law School Professor Jonathan Turley heads up Al-Arian’s legal team. On March 3, he released the following statement:

“On behalf of Mr. Olson and Mr. Meitl and the entire legal team, (we are greatly disappointed by) the Justice Department(’s) continu(ing)….effort to mete out punishment that it could not secure from a jury. Having lost (its) case (it’s) openly sought to extend (Al-Arian’s) confinement by daisy-chaining grand juries. As in other cases, the government has given Dr. Al-Arian the choice of an obvious perjury trap or a contempt sanction. (Either way assures his imprisonment. This) choice….is obnoxious to our legal system and contrary to any standard of decency. The mistreatment of Dr. Al-Arian remains an international symbol of how the Bush Administration has discarded fundamental principles of fairness in a blind pursuit of retribution against this political activist. We stand committed to fighting this great injustice and hopefully reuniting Dr. Al-Arian with his family and friends.”

In the meantime, his long ordeal continues at a time lawlessness prevails over justice, and we’re all Sami-Al-Arians in America’s “war on terrorism.”
