How to Kill the Meth Monster: NYT opinion

OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR

How to Kill the Meth Monster

Newport, Ore.

THE latest bad news from the world of methamphetamine is that makers of the drug have perfected a one-pot recipe that enables them to manufacture their highly addictive product while on the move, often in their car. The materials they need — a two-liter soda bottle, a few cold pills and some household chemicals — are easily obtained and easily discarded, often in a trash bag dumped along the highway.

There is, however, a simple way to end this mobile industry — and, indeed, most methamphetamine production. We’ve tried it in Oregon, and have seen how well it works. Just keep a key ingredient, pseudoephedrine, out of the hands of meth producers.

Pseudoephedrine is a nasal decongestant found in some cold and allergy medicines. In 1976, the Food and Drug Administration allowed it to be sold over the counter, inadvertently letting the genie out of the bottle. Afterward, the meth epidemic spread across the nation, leaving destroyed lives and families in its wake.

Sales of products containing pseudoephedrine in the United States now amount to nearly $600 million a year. Yet, according to the pharmaceutical industry, only 15 million Americans use the drug to treat their stuffed-up noses, and these people typically buy no more than a package or two ($10 to $20 worth) a year.

Over the years, Congress and state legislatures have passed laws meant to prevent the diversion of pseudoephedrine to meth production. But such efforts have amounted to only temporary Band-Aids.

In 2006, Congress required pseudoephedrine products to be moved behind the counter, set daily and monthly limits on the amount that can be sold to any one customer and required retailers to keep a log of sales. But meth users quickly learned to evade these controls by making purchases in several different stores — a practice known as “smurfing.”

In an effort to avoid having more stringent controls placed on the drug, the pharmaceutical industry is lobbying Congress to require electronic tracking of pseudoephedrine sales, as some states already do. This makes it harder for an individual smurfer to collect large quantities of the drug. But meth users get around the tracking system by banding together in cooperatives, with each member buying pseudoephedrine products in amounts small enough to evade detection. These group smurfers then contribute their portion to the pot in exchange for cash or a share of the cooked-up meth. Or, in the West, they feed the “super labs” run by drug trafficking organizations in Central California.

In Kentucky, an electronic tracking law that went into effect in 2008 has had no effect on the number of meth labs there, and only 10 percent of them are found by electronic tracking. The number of police incidents involving meth labs has actually increased by more than 40 percent.

The only effective solution is to put the genie back in the bottle by returning pseudoephedrine to prescription-drug status. That’s what Oregon did more than four years ago, enabling the state to eliminate smurfing and nearly eradicate meth labs. This is part of the reason that Oregon recently experienced the steepest decline in crime rates in the 50 states.

Earlier this year, Mississippi also passed a law requiring a prescription to get pseudoephedrine. Since July, the number of meth labs in that state has fallen by 65 percent.

In 2009, Mexico, which had been the source of most of the methamphetamine on the streets of the United States, went further, banning pseudoephedrine entirely. The potency of meth from Mexico has since plummeted. This is great news. But now the ball is back in our court.

These pseudoephedrine prescription requirements apply to only 15 pharmaceutical products and their generic equivalents — medicines like Sudafed 12 Hour, Aleve D and Advil Cold and Sinus. Most cold and allergy medicines on store shelves are not affected, because they contain no pseudoephedrine.

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon has proposed legislation to require prescriptions for products with pseudoephedrine nationwide, and Congress should enact it without delay. American families, too many already devastated by the meth epidemic, deserve no less.

Rob Bovett, the district attorney for Lincoln County, Ore., was the primary author of Oregon’s anti-methamphetamine laws.

WAR CRIMES DOSSIER:

BULLETIN ITEM: Subscriber Question On Oregon Quakes

Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2008 16:35:34 -0000
From: "Sam"
To: earthchange- bulletins- owner@yahoogroup s.com
Subject: Seismic activity off the coast of OR

Hey Michael,

What is your take on all the 4-5's off the coast of Oregon? I have a
friend who lives in Portland area who can tell before they hit - She
gets extreme migranes just before and is quite concerned about them.
These have evidently been going off for over a month now and she is a
complete wreck. Any input appreciated.
Sam

MWM: It is a very complex geology. It combines strike slip action of the Pacfic Plate sliding Northwesterly against the North American Plate with a Spreading Rift Zone which extends from the Queen Charlotte Islands to basically Cape Mendocino in North Cal. At least three small plate frags hugging the coast line of North America, two of which Cascadia is over-riding very very slowly. These repeat Oregon quakes are largely associated with the Rift, involving both transform slips (nearly east and west) between the plate frags and actual Rift spreading. Strongly associated with them is major underwater volcanism. These repeat quakes (tectonic oscillations) have been reocurring in the area for the past couple of years, most noticably since early 2007. Most likely several megaplumes of very large quantities of hot water have been generated by this activity during the past many months. Where this heat is going to is not clear, it may be the source of the heat which is appearing in the North Pacific Gyre Hotspot, but this takes our thinking out on the limb quite aways. Each quake may be an indicator of another bursting of the "pipes" and another sudden surge of heat. I think this is a very good demonstration of "Global Warming" at work.

P.S. Please have your friend contact me ASAP directly. I am still watching for a complex chain of events which will begin off the coast of Oregon, create major damage in Southern California, and end up with catastrophic volcanic eruptions in Mexico.

Potential for Strong Earthquake in Pacific Northwest
Idaho Earthquakes

Boise, Idaho -- A series of shallow earthquakes have been startling residents from Oregon to Idaho and even as far way as Alaska.

In the Gem State, the strongest shaking was felt just east of Pocatello.

The tremors, all of which are a 4.0 magnitude or less, have been occurring along the Blanco Fracture Zone off the Oregon Coast.

Emergency managers say the quakes are no cause for alarm but shouldn't be handled with absolute complacency either.

"Future activity cannot be predicted, however people living anywhere in the Pacific Northwest could potentially experience a magnitude 5 or 6 earthquake. Planning is not a prediction, but planning for the worst and hoping for the best is good advice in the disaster preparedness profession," said Susan Reinertson, FEMA's regional administrator.

Emergency managers say all Americans should have a 72 hour disaster preparedness kit with food, water, prescription medication and first aid supplies in their homes.

Some of the geophysical news that affects the geopolitcal arena

BULLETIN ITEM: After Nearly A Month Of 0 Sunspots, Activity At 11 On July 18

Frankly, it smells like we just passed through, finally, absolute Solar MIN, several months after it was initially called. One of my gauges is the universal sense of depression which has settled in over the human species. People everywhere are at a standstill, large masses barely hanging on. In U.S. political circuits, the let-down and disappointment with both major party candidates is palpable, all U.S. institutions are currently surrounded by severe lack of confidence by the great majority.

Two more quakes hit off Oregon coast

<
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A pair of earthquakes were recorded about 250 miles off the Oregon coast after similar quakes in the same undersea area.

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 10 miles under the ocean west of Yachats just after 6 p.m. Friday, followed 10 minutes later by a 4.7 magnitude quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said five other quakes hit the same area and depth in the past three days.

QUITO, July 18 (Xinhua) -- A 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador's southwestern coastal province of Guayas early Friday, injuring dozens and causing minor property damage.

According to the National Geophysics Institute, the quake occurred at 00:41 a.m. local time (0541 GMT) and its epicenter was located 310 km southwest of the capital city Quito.

Many shanty towns along the Guayaquil River collapsed in the quake, local media reported. The government has pledged to provide aid and temporary shelters to those rendered homeless.

Northern Ecuador was also hit by a mild earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale later on Friday. There are no reports of casualties or property loss so far.

Very unusual activity is occurring just off the Oregon Coast. Also of interest...

Seismometers closest to an event always chart the quake at a higher intensity that seismic equipment located further away. Isn't it interesting that the USGS' seismometers and the EMSC both show the latest quake at Mag. 5.6, recorded at a mere 2 seconds difference. However, something strange happens with TWO "missing" Richter 5 quakes on the USGS report. Yet they show on the EMSC list. Since the two lists report data in different order, they have been color-coded for your convenience.

When you look at the legend for this USGS earthquake map, keep in mind the time frame of "last hour, last day, last week." This can be confusing because any shaker that occurred even 25 hours ago, falls into the "last week" category since their is no daily breakdown.

Also, some of the Oregon Coast quakes have occurred under the bigger squares and won't show up. For these "invisible" quakes, see the inset.

Tornado Count in This Very Active Season

July 18, 2008
Holly Deyo

As stated by NOAA, the 1,735 tornado count is a preliminary figure. Even so, if you look at their stats for the past 3 years, actual vs. preliminary numbers at their widest only vary by 207. That would make the count nearer to 1,538 instead of lagging at April's 547 number.

More importantly, NOAA statistics show that the US is seeing an earlier start to tornado season as well as a decided uptick in events.
NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory states that the US sees about 1,000 tornadoes in any given year. The NWS' 10-year running average shot up considerably when 1,817 twisters hit in 2004.

This pushes the 10-year number to a distorted average. Even taking this into account, the graph speaks for itself. With months still to go before year end, this could be a very impressive twister year.

Hurricane Season Getting Longer

By Andrea Thompson, Senior Writer

posted: 14 July 2008 12:15 am ET

Hurricane seasons have been getting longer over the past century and the big storms are coming earlier, LiveScience has learned. The trend has been particularly noticeable since 1995, some climate scientists say.

Further, the area of warm water able to support hurricanes is growing larger over time. The Atlantic Ocean is becoming more hurricane friendly, scientists say, and the shift is likely due to global warming.

"There has been an increase in the seasonal length over the last century," Jay Gulledge, a senior scientist with the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, told LiveScience. "It's pretty striking."

A study Gulledge co-authored with other climate scientists found a five-day increase in season length per decade since 1915.

Hurricane season officially starts June 1, but the first named storm of the 2008 season, Tropical Storm Albert, formed on May 31. The first hurricane of the season, Hurricane Bertha, formed on July 1, reaching hurricane strength on July 7, relatively early in the season for a major storm.

In the last decade, more strong storms have been forming earlier in the season, said hurricane researcher Greg Holland of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

While this trend hasn't been formally linked to global warming because climate models can't reproduce individual storms, Holland thinks it's likely that the warming caused by manmade greenhouse gases is a major factor in the seasonal shift based on observations of changes in recent decades and the predictions models are making for the changing conditions in the Atlantic basin.

The length of the hurricane season is "one of the potentially big signals" that could change in response to global warming, Holland said.

Defining the season

The definition of the hurricane season depends on who you ask: For hurricane forecasters and coastal residents living in an area prone to hurricane landfalls, the standard dates are June 1 to Nov. 30. The National Hurricane Center uses these dates because historically most storms occur within that span of six months and because having a definitive time frame helps to heighten the public's awareness of the dangers of hurricanes.

But for researchers looking at how hurricane activity has changed over time, those dates don't really matter — meteorologists look at the dates of the first and last named storms in a given year, which allow them to evaluate the actual length of each hurricane season.

Since 1995, hurricane seasons have been increasing in length based on the latter definition, Holland said, with stronger storms that typically wouldn't be seen until mid-August showing up in July (Bertha, which became a Category 3 storm in the Atlantic last week, is one example).

Expanding warm pool

Like a hurricane's intensity, the length of the hurricane season is affected by the temperature of the ocean that fuels the storms. The warmer the water, the more energy a storm has to draw from.

Hurricanes and tropical storms have been forming earlier in the season recently because "we now get warmer sea surface temperatures earlier in the year," Holland explained. "The whole season has extended out."

Peter Webster of Georgia Tech put a finer point on it. "There is some work that says that the length of the North Atlantic hurricane season has become longer as SSTs [sea surface temperatures] warm up more quickly early in the season," he said.

Tropical storms and hurricanes need water of at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.5 degrees Celsius) to form. The area where water temperatures meet or exceed that mark is called the warm pool.

In recent years, the warm pool has expanded, creating a larger area over which hurricanes can develop and strengthen, Holland told LiveScience. It is now reaching all the way to the coast of Africa, allowing storms to form farther east, and so giving them more time to strengthen as they traverse the Atlantic.

Bertha, for example, formed farther east than any other July storm on record.

These storms that form so far over in the eastern Atlantic are called "Cape Verde-type" storms, after the chain of islands off the western coast of Africa. Cape Verde-type storms account for a major proportion of all major hurricanes (Category 3 and higher), Holland said.

These storms tend to take a straight westward path across the Atlantic, avoiding land and cooler waters, which can kill a storm. Hurricane Andrew, which devastated southern Florida in 1992, and 2007's Hurricane Dean, which wreaked havoc in the state of Yucatán in Mexico, were both Cape Verde-type storms, along with Bertha.

Holland thinks that the growth of the warm pool will be a factor in the length of future hurricane seasons by promoting these and other early-forming storms.

Outliers

Other early storms, outliers to the standard June 1 to Nov. 30 season, such as this season's Tropical Storm Arthur or last year's Subtropical Storm Andrea (which formed on May 9), aren't all that unusual. Such early birds were seen even before global warming became an issue — the earliest-forming storm in recorded weather history was observed on March 7, 1908.

"There's always been the odd one out," Holland said, adding that we'll likely see more of these in a warming world.

"We have to expect that they'll be more outliers," he said, though he doubts that the official dates of hurricane season will change, since most will still lie within that window.

But these aren't the early-forming storms that Holland is worried about, because they tend to be weaker. It's the major storms, like the Cape Verde-type, that are forming in July and later that are the ones to watch out for, he said.

These shift to more major storms is also cause for concern because the Atlantic historically had fairly timid hurricane seasons compared to other storm-producing basins such as the Indian Ocean. Because the Atlantic basin wasn't optimized for hurricane formation already, "it didn't take much of a change to see a difference," Holland said.

One other way the Atlantic basin is becoming more hurricane-friendly, besides warmer oceans, is more favorable atmospheric conditions. Warming ocean temperatures also change atmospheric circulation patterns. Holland said some changes are already happening over the Atlantic and climate models predict that these changes will also tend to promote the development of storms off the coast of Africa.

"All of the stars are lining up," he said.

Martial law soon?

SFC Donald Buswel1

April 26, 2008

The name "false flag" comes from the old pirate's ruse of flying another country's flag during an attack, thereby shifting blame for the attack to a party that had nothing to do with it. Governments use false flag attacks to push their nations into dictatorship or war. As military experts, we fear that national terror drills, scheduled for May 1-8, could be used to camouflage a false flag attack in the United States.

Strategic Signals

Dr. James Fetzer

Yesterday an American-flagged ship fired on the Iranian Navy, and now Pentagon sources say that they have been ordered to prepare attack plans. Admiral "Fox" Fallon, the Centcom commander who opposed war with Iran, has been ousted in favor of Bush loyalist General David Petraeus, who has spent the last month accusing Iran for our increasing problems with the Iraqi resistance.
Saudi Arabia has been preparing for nuclear fallout from an attack on Iran since last month, when Dick Cheney paid a visit. Israel has just finished its largest-ever domestic war drills. Israel and the Bush administration are insisting that Syria and North Korea are nuclear collaborators. Syria is preparing for the contingency of an Israeli attack. Iran is preparing for the contingency of a US attack. US government insiders speculate that Bush has promised Israel an expanded Middle East war before he leaves office.
The Neo-Cons are pounding their war drums again, according to Dr. James H. Fetzer, the founder of Scholars for 9/11 Truth, and he believes that nothing would help them spread their imperial war in the Middle East as much as another 9/11.
He has just published "9/11 and the Neo-Con Agenda."
http://www.amfirstbooks.com/IntroPages/ToolBarTopics/Articles/Other_Topics/9-
11_Anomalies/Dr._James_H._Fetzer_2008-04-22_9-11_and_the_Neo-
Con_Agenda.html
The article is a must-read introduction for anyone wanting to understand the origins and aims of the "global war on terror."

Domestic Discord

Capt. Eric H. May

Inside the US, Bush approval ratings are well below 30%, and approval ratings for the U.S. Congress and mainstream media are even lower. Over three quarters of the American people believe that the country is on the wrong track, and just as many want to end the quicksand war in the Middle East. The economy is crashing as fuel prices are skyrocketing. The Establishment is losing its grip on power. It would take another 9/11 to make the nation forget its domestic woes and resume its lost zeal for the Neo-Con "new American century" of foreign wars and a domestic police state.
In his much-discussed February article, "False Flag Prospects, 2008," http://www.thepriceofliberty.org/08/02/25/may.htm Captain Eric H. May documented the disturbing fact that military and police exercises were occurring at the same time as the 9/11 US attacks in 2001 and the 7/7 UK bombings in 2005. In that prescient article, he designated the Pacific Northwest as one of the top three target zones for the next US false flag attack, and the Pacific Northwest will be the target of terror drills May 1-8.
Should a major event occur during the drills, the Bush administration is prepared to implement National Security Presidential Directive (NSPD) 51, which establishes dictatorship "in the event of a man-made or natural catastrophe." It is an extraordinary measure, and the White House has stonewalled Homeland Security Committee members from the House of Representatives who wanted to read it. One of those members, Oregon's Peter DeFazio summed up the feeling of many Americans about NSPD 51 when he said "Maybe the people who think there's a conspiracy out there are right."
Fears that a false flag attack might result in martial law are nourished by last week's militaristic Operation Sudden Impact, reported by Infowars.net writer Steve Watson: "Three States Subjected to Martial Law Sweeps"
http://www.infowars.net/articles/april2008/180408impact.htm

National Level Exercise 2-08

Maj. William Fox

NLE 2-08 will involve the very highest levels of Homeland Security and the US Northern Command. Both "Homesec" and "Northcom" were established by the Bush administration in the wake of 9/11 to take control of the nation in the event of another terrorist attack. They will be joined by FEMA in the May 1-8 exercise, which is one of the two largest terror drills scheduled this year.
On Thursday, May 1, the exercise begins in Washington, when an explosion collapses the Alaska Way viaduct in downtown Seattle and damages surrounding buildings. Twenty minutes later, terrorists explode a highjacked tanker filled with highly toxic chemicals at the Seattle Ferry Terminal. Deadly gas soon permeates downtown Seattle.
Emergency responders come in waves. Police and firemen, first to arrive, are quickly overwhelmed. The state deploys its 22-member Civil Support Team, a National Guard unit, to assess the damage and coordinate support. Later, 100 soldiers from a chemical battalion based in Yakima arrive to rescue, decontaminate and treat survivors. Finally, 5,000 troops arrive to handle logistics and security.
On Monday, May 5, the scenario shifts to Oregon where VX, the most toxic nerve agent ever synthesized, erupts from the Umatilla Army Depot.
The next day, terrorists blow up a chemical tanker in Ferndale, Washington. The county sheriff requests national support, and a Marine Corps chemical warfare detachment temporarily based at Ft. Lewis, Washington for the exercise responds.
According to sources at Northcom, NLE 2-08 will involve "robust play," with "surprise injects" of unanticipated events in which participants are "stretched to the limit" and have "everything thrown at them except the kitchen sink." All of this makes it easier for the exercise to "go live" by having a real catastrophe occur.
As the Pacific Northwest scenario is playing out, Washington, DC will be simulating a catastrophic hurricane as part of the same exercise. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to suggest that this puts Dick Cheney back in the bunker he occupied during 9/11.
Citizens interested in understanding how local, state and national levels of the military can be manipulated into working against us should read "The Real Drill" by Major William B. Fox, about Portland area terror drills last year.

Mission of Conscience

SFC Don Buswell

Many American citizens are deeply concerned about police militarization, and about government and media preconditioning of our nation for future terror attacks and martial law. We recommend that they monitor NLE 2-08 closely. Armed with cell phones, cameras and the Internet, they are the single greatest deterrent against false flag terror.
If we, the co-authors of this alert, are in error about anything, then we invite reasonable officials to investigate us and our assertions at the very highest levels. In the past we have too often met with hostility, evasion or deception by officials involved in terror drills. We have been stonewalled when we have requested access to an extended schedule of unclassified military and police terror drills.
We believe that there is a pattern of official retaliation against patriotic service members who ask questions about 9/11 and false flags.
In 2006, Sergeant First Class Donald Buswell, an Army military intelligence NCO, suggested that 9/11 might have been a false flag operation. Within a month the decorated 40-year-old Iraq war veteran suffered a freak pulmonary embolism, which nearly killed him. After he was released from the hospital, his command accused him of disloyalty for his remarks, and subjected him to an extensive military investigation. Ultimately, he was fully exonerated, and the now-retired Buswell has become widely known on the Internet as the "9/11 NCO." Stephen Webster, writing for The Lone Star Iconoclast, gained national attention with his story about Buswell, "Under Fire! U.S. Army Intelligence Analyst Targeted for Suggesting New Independent 9/11 Investigation."
http://www.lonestaricon.com/absolutenm/anmviewer.asp?a=426&z=40

The duty to keep the government honest isn't optional for those of us who have taken an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. It has always been difficult, and even dangerous, to serve the American people. We call on all active-duty soldiers, police and first responders to obey their oaths by asking questions that need to be asked, and by thinking twice before blindly carrying out orders that may result in an a false flag attack against their country. We urge leaders of those soldiers, police and first responders to explain that diligence is not disloyalty, and that no one ceases to be a free American citizen by putting on a uniform.
Issuing an alert—as we are doing now—is not an instance of "crying wolf," as Bush administration apologists often assert. As military-trained experts, we are convinced that the US 9/11 and UK 7/7 attacks were set up under the camouflage of terror drills. The existence of a wolf is not in question. The wolf of false flag terror has killed our fellow citizens and frightened our country into needless wars. It's our mission of conscience to keep it from striking again.

Three States \Subjected To "Martial Law Sweeps"

Local, state police and sheriff's office join feds for "terror" sweeps that result in hundreds of citations for traffic violations

Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Fri
day, April 18, 2008

Federal law enforcement agencies co-opted sheriffs offices as well state and local police forces in three states last weekend for a vast round up operation that one sheriff's deputy has described as "martial law training".

Law-enforcement agencies in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas took part in what was described by local media as "an anti-crime and anti-terrorism initiative" involving officers from more than 50 federal, state and local agencies.

Given the military style name "Operation Sudden Impact", the initiative saw officers from six counties rounding up fugitives, conducting traffic checkpoints, climbing on boats on the Mississippi River and doing other "crime-abatement" programs all under the label of "anti-terrorism".

WREG Memphis news channel 3 reported that the Sheriff's Department arrested 332 people, 142 of whom were fugitives, or "terrorists" as they now seem to be known.

Hundreds of dollars were seized and drugs recovered, and 1,292 traffic violations were handed out to speeding terrorists and illegally parked terrorists.

Click here to watch a WREG Memphis news report

The authorities even raided businesses and store owners, confiscating computers and paperwork in an effort to "track down possible terrorists before something big happens".

The Sheriff's Department is determining if and when they plan another round-up.

The operation, which involved police, deputies, the FBI, drug agents, gang units and even the coast guard, is just one example of how law enforcement at the state and local levels is being co-opted and centralized by the Department of Homeland Security via massive federal grants.

It also highlights how the distinction between crime and terrorism is becoming irrelevant

An Infowars reader called in to the Alex Jones show yesterday to alert us to the story and explain that he had gleaned the information from a his friend, a sheriff's deputy in Memphis, who had described the operation as "training for martial law in America".

Forget innocent until proven guilty, you are now a terrorist suspect until you are told otherwise.

It is now the norm to consider everybody equally likely to be guilty of something than innocent. This is proactive policing, not preventative or reactive policing, and is widely indicative of a society that is NOT free.

This form of proactive policing is a phenomena indicative of a once free state rapidly declining into a authoritarian police state.

If there was a real terror threat in these states, it would surely make sense to for law enforcement agencies to target known trouble areas, and follow up on already existing leads. Instead we are seeing local police and the coast guard being recruited to randomly target anyone in any area as possible terrorists.

Surely if there was a real terror threat, this activity would harm the effort to combat it.

Of course, such activity is clearly not related to a real and tangible terror threat, it is related to the ongoing effort to vastly increase the size and scope of the federal government and increase the power it has over American citizens.

The information and intelligence from the operation will be collated and routed through federally funded state-run fusion centers, which are working in conjunction with the military arm of the DHS, NORTHCOM.

Such information will soon include the DNA and other biometric information from every person arrested, which DHS head Michael Chertoff has declared is no longer your personal information.

We recently reported on the fact that after 9/11 the Justice Department advised the Bush administration that it was able to effectively suspend the Fourth Amendment where domestic counter terrorism operations are concerned.

In light of this, and given that the government has begun to class any crime as terrorism and set local and state police to work on "anti-terror" operations, it is clear that the protections provided by the Bill of Rights and the Constitution are under direct threat.

We have seen how new provisions will effectively nullify the U.S. constitution, and a recent spate of executive orders, in particular PDD 51, outline preparations for the implementation of open martial law in the event of a declared national emergency.

Centralized and federally coordinated law enforcement programs complement nationwide FEMA programs to train Pastors and other religious representatives to become secret police enforcers who teach their congregations to "obey the government" in preparation for the implementation of martial law, property and firearm seizures, mass vaccination programs and forced relocation. The effects of this particular program have already been witnessed.

These were the last earthquake warnings I posted (and ministers are who are being trained to handle the earthquakes AND martial law.)

Oregon earthquakes update, books of note

Another series of earthquakes added to the geological mystery off the Oregon Coast on Monday.Four sizable quakes rumbled off the coastline in a span of four hours Monday night. The largest, a 4.1 earthquake located 115 miles west of Port Orford, occurred at 7:17 p.m.Over the past several weeks, there have been hundreds of small quakes west of the coastal towns of Bandon and Port Orford. They have varied in magnitude from 3.0 to above 5.0.

Scientists have said they don't know exactly what the earthquakes mean, but they could be caused by molten rock rumbling away from the recognized faults off Oregon.Monday night's earthquakes:

  • 7:17 p.m., 115 miles west of Port Orford, 4.1 earthquake.
  • 7:58 p.m., 92 miles west of Bandon, 4.0 earthquake.
  • 9:35 p.m., 103 miles west of Bandon, 3.9 earthquake.
  • 10:41 p.m., 107 miles west of Port Orford, 3.7 earthquake.

  • There may have been 600 earthquakes recorded off the Oregon Coast in recent weeks, but it took an imaginary quake to get volunteers with the local American Red Cross office shaking.

Luckily, none of the recent tremors caused any damage on land, but if any did in the future, local Red Cross volunteers want to be ready.

That’s why about 80 community members, including some 35 Red Cross disaster relief volunteers, pitched in over the weekend for a disaster response drill through the Oregon Pacific Chapter of the American Red Cross Roseburg branch.

Roseburg’s George and Virginia Roth, who started volunteering with the disaster relief program following Hurricane Katrina, came up with the idea to practice the scenario about a month ago.

“I couldn’t think of anything else that would provide us with fires, floods, road closures and house damage,” George Roth said Friday morning, about a half-hour before the imaginary 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the area. “I didn’t plan it to correspond with the 600 earthquakes off the coast.”

With around 60 dams in Douglas County, several of which have a high risk for damage in an earthquake, Roth said the potential for widespread flooding and landslides is not far-fetched.

A large-scale earthquake could also turn homes to rubble and damage natural gas lines, leading to fires.

With so much destruction to the community, hordes of people would have to evacuate their homes. The Red Cross is mandated to set up emergency shelters for community members, so volunteers spent Friday morning setting up blue and green cots and dining facilities at the New Life Christian Center near the Red Cross headquarters, located on Alameda Street.

Some community members had agreed to play the part of victims whose homes had been damaged in the earthquake, and headed to the shelter where volunteers assessed their needs.

Other Red Cross volunteers practiced assessing damage to homes, sending out communications through radio and assessing medical needs.

The Douglas County Health Department, the Civilian Emergency Response Team, the Amateur Radio Emergency Services, the Roseburg fire and police departments, the Salvation Army, and the county’s health and social services department and emergency operations center also participated.

Roseburg High School’s Health Occupation Students of America group and the Red Cross First Aid Support Team pitched in, while local restaurants and stores also provided food for the exercise that helped sustain the “victims” who stayed in the shelter Friday night.

The Roths and Jim Caplan, Red Cross district director, said as far as they know this was the first exercise of its scale undertaken in Oregon. The drill continued over a 30-hour period.

“It’s not just the Red Cross people,” Caplan said. “It’s people from throughout the community.”

The purpose of the drill was to identify strengths and weaknesses in the abilities of the volunteers and the community to handle a disaster.

But Caplan and the Roths emphasize that community members bear responsibility as individuals as well. Residents should always keep at least 72 hours’ worth of food and water in their homes, along with other supplies such as a portable radio, a flash light and a list of contact information for relatives.

“Individual and community preparedness is our single best proactive thing to do,” George Roth said.

Watching the Local Red Cross in action at this training session a wise person might just make sure they can take care of their own family and not rely on the Red Cross. It had the look of chaos aplenty.
I hope they improve. It looked like way too many volunteers bossing others around, without knowing what they were supposed to do...
It seemed that the ham radio people had more training, than the Red Cross people did.
Maybe this Red Cross office here has never really put in any time with disaster training.
Oh well, they are good at getting blood donations..

When you need the Red Cross, we will be there. For example, we repond to dozens of Douglas County house fires every year, providing people with clothing, shelter, and food. As it was on 4/18, every exercise begins with some confusion. In this case, it was straightened out quickly and the shelter was up and operating in short order. With the active involvement of our partners, we hosted about 25 "clients" overnight and fed more than 50 people at a time. This was the first full-scale shelter exercise in Roseburg in at least a decade. We learned a lot that will help us improve in the future. Anyone is welcome to join the Red Cross and contribute to the community. Our extensive disaster training courses are free to disaster volunteers. I agree with the commenter that every family should work hard to be prepared. We have preparedness orientation and information available for free to families and community groups. Just call us at 673-3255.

    Reminder:

The 2008 National Earthquake Conference, if nothing else, will go down as having benefited from good timing. Starting today (Tuesday, April 22) and continuing through April 26, conferees gathering in Seattle, Washington can talk among other things about the Friday, April 18 earthquake that originated in Illinois and had after-shocks that were felt days later. Indeed, the event renewed media interest in the New Madrid (Missouri) seismic zone, site of a momentous series of earthquakes in 1812. The 2008 National Earthquake Conference is chaired by the four national earthquake and emergency consortia groups funded by FEMA under the National Earthquake Program (the Northeast States Emergency Corsortium, Central United States Earthquake Consortium, the Western States Seismic Policy Council and Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup), the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) and the Emergency Preparedness for Industry and Commerce Council (EPICC) of British Columbia, Canada.

"An urgent call to action. After this, we can't say that we haven't been warned." -Tacoma News Tribune

In this expanded new edition of Living with Earthquakes, Robert Yeats, a leading authority on earthquakes in California and the Pacific Northwest, describes the threat posed by the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a great earthquake fault which runs for hundreds of miles offshore from British Columbia to northern California. New research reveals subtle movements on the deepest part of this fault every fourteen to fifteen months-building up strain toward the next major earthquake.

Combining cutting-edge research with practical safety information, Living with Earthquakes

*introduces new information about the danger from faults beneath major Northwest cities: the Seattle Fault, Tacoma Fault, and Portland Hills Fault

*explores such topics as earthquake forecasting, catastrophe insurance, tsunamis, soil liquefaction, and seismic waves in Northwest lakes caused by Alaskan earthquakes

*reviews earthquake preparedness and disaster response in the aftermath of the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, the worst natural disaster in Washington's history

*suggests actions that citizens can take to protect their families and homes

An essential guide for anyone interested in understanding earthquake science or in preparing for the next earthquake, this book is also a call to action. Vivid descriptions of recent disasters-including the great tsunami that swept down the Northwest coast in 1964, the 1993 Oregon earthquakes, and the 2001 Nisqually earthquake-underscore the urgent need for better earthquake planning and awareness.

    earthquake update!!

Magnitude-6.7 quake hits near B.C. coast

Updated Sat. Jan. 5 2008 7:31 PM ET

Why is this announcement coming in my email NOW??

    CTV.ca News Staff

A "strong" underwater earthquake occurred off the coast of B.C. early Saturday morning, registering a magnitude of 6.7.

The quake, the second of three to strike in the same area early this morning, hit at about 3:45 a.m. Pacific Standard Time Saturday, said Guy Urban of the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

The original quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.3, Urban told CTV Newsnet.

"We thought nothing of it, put out an information statement on it, and approximately 20 minutes later the larger quake came in with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7, and that was located almost in the same spot about 135 miles (241 kilometres) southwest of Sandspit, Queen Charlotte Islands."

Urban said there is little or no chance of a tsunami occurring, but officials followed standard procedure and released a "tsunami information statement high" to make people aware that a quake had taken place.

"A damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts," says the statement from the centre. "Some of these areas may experience non-damaging sea level changes. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides."

The underwater quake registering a magnitude of 6.7 could easily cause major damage were it to occur on land, Urban said.

"It would probably cause walls to crack and probably concrete foundations to tumble a little bit, so it could be fairly devastating. It's called a strong earthquake so it's large enough to cause some damage."

Urban said underwater earthquakes of 30 seconds or more have the potential to cause a tsunami.

"The general rule of thumb is if people are in or near the water when an earthquake occurs and it lasts for more than 30 seconds they should go to high ground because there's a possibility a tsunami could have been generated."
