Tehran Times: Canadian Hostility vs. Muslims fidelity
By our staff writer
Today we are witnessing that the identity of a large number of nations which is intertwined with their religions is ignored by some Western governments. The attempt by some governments to manipulate United Nations mechanisms by designing and projecting politically motivated resolutions and statements against the values and independence of other countries has become a redundant and bitter experience in recent decades.
In a very recent case the government of Canada has registered a draft resolution against the Islamic Republic of Iran in the third committee of the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly. Undoubtedly the sponsor of this political and dwarf attempt i.e. the government of Canada, by adopting this parochial approach has been put into the abyss of superficial one-sided human rights assessment of other countries.
Canadian government by singling out and condemning the Iranian society on the pretext of being religious and performing Islamic values and rituals is heinously nourishing the greater idea of uprooting the religiosity in religious countries.
Obviously a government like Canada with a very poor human rights record can not be in a position to make any allegation against others. The government of Canada is facing a huge number of well recorded charges and criticism, for its human rights violations, at national and international levels. The Canadian government’s several breaches of human rights and fundamental freedoms of its own people entails different dimensions and manifestations.
The extent of Canada’s non-compliance with its legal obligations under the international human rights instruments to which Canada is a party, even has triggered attention of the relevant treaty bodies of the United Nations.
Hypocritical treatment with, and repressive tactics applied by the government of Canada against its nationals, in particular towards the aborigines, migrants and women and children even voiced the concern of the United nations relevant mechanisms and institutions, inter alia, Working Group on Arbitrary Detention - that paid a visit to the country - and also resulted in issuance of various observations and recommendations by the treaty bodies of the United Nations.
Social exclusion policies, blatant racism and racial discrimination, police brutality, unlawful detention, torture and death cases in custody, violence against women and children, violence against aboriginals and indigenous people who are being treated as the second class people, discrimination against Muslim citizens are among the long list of human rights violations of Canada.
Canadian hostility against the Iranian people is happening at a time that Canada severely and continuously endorses the catastrophic and systematic violation of human rights by Israel. The Canadian government has formed an alliance with those who are committing war crimes against humanity, those who are bombarding and killing innocent schoolchildren with precision-guided and hi-tech weaponry; those who are paving the way for derailment of international human rights law through proliferation of unilateralism; those who are preventing or obstructing adoption of strong resolutions as well as blocking effective implementation of the adopted resolutions by the newly established Human Rights Council to protect the human rights of Palestinians. Canada was the only government which challenged the agenda of the Human Rights Council to prevent it from including an item to consider the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Hence it is understandable why the Canadian draft against the Islamic Republic of Iran in the third committee of the United Nations General Assembly is cosponsored by the Israeli regime, a regime with an appalling and indisputable record of war crimes and systematic violation of human rights of innocent Palestinians. This alone is telling enough and adequately self-explaining that how ill-intended, deceitful and preposterous the Canadian attempt against Iran is
