McGuinty faces major challenges

The Ontario Legislature resumes sitting today after a three-month recess. In the coming days, its order paper will be filled with earnest legislation like amendments to the Mining Act (to give First Nations more of a say in prospecting and mining on their traditional lands), a measure to limit toxic emissions by industries, and a ban on the use of hand-held cellphones by motorists.

There will also be an economic statement, likely in November, with some short-term fixes for the ailing provincial economy.

And in the daily question period in the Legislature, Premier Dalton McGuinty's government will come under attack for not doing enough to address the economic slump.

But McGuinty should be able to withstand the barrage, given the weakened state of the opposition, with one lame-duck leader (the NDP's Howard Hampton, who is stepping down next year) and the other on probation (the PC's John Tory, who was given a tepid endorsement by his party earlier this year).

Behind the scenes, however, McGuinty will be wrestling with two enormous decisions that will shape the province's future.

The first is whether to keep the budget balanced or to let it slide into deficit if, as expected, the current economic slump continues and significantly erodes the provincial revenue base.

The second is what kind of reactor to choose to replace the aging nuclear power plants at Pickering and Darlington.

On the deficit, even bank economists have said that, given the circumstances, it ought to be under consideration. But so far McGuinty has stuck doggedly to the goal of a balanced budget.

"Obviously if we anticipate that our revenues are going to slow down, as I've said many times in the past, we're going to have to do in government what families do at home," said McGuinty last week. "You've got to make some adjustments and you've got to make sure you're focusing on your priorities."

Thus, with one eye on the fiscal storm clouds, McGuinty has sought to dampen expectations of government assistance. He told municipalities last month not to expect instant relief from the downloading of provincial services onto their plates. And last week he suggested the timetable for his promise to reduce poverty will have to be stretched out.

So no new spending initiatives. But even existing spending – on schools, hospitals, roads, transit, courts, jails and so on – will come under pressure if the recession deepens and the treasury is further squeezed. It remains to be seen whether McGuinty's commitment to a balanced budget is sustainable in that circumstance.

As for the decision on a new nuclear reactor, in hot competition for the multi-billion-dollar contract are: Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL), the homegrown company whose design is now in place in the province's power plants; French-owned Areva; and U.S.-based Westinghouse.

The McGuinty government would like to give the nod to AECL, which is owned by the federal government. But Ontario wants Ottawa to back up any sale with guarantees to cover cost overruns. So far, those guarantees have not been forthcoming, as Stephen Harper's government has wrestled with its own decision whether to keep AECL or sell it.

Both these decisions are due to be made next spring (the deficit in the annual provincial budget, the reactor likely in a separate announcement). The behind-the-scenes struggles that precede the decisions will be more ferocious – and hugely more significant – than the daily battles on the floor of the Legislature between the government and the opposition parties.

Major Challenge is getting rid of McGuinty

At what point will Ontarions ever get choices for good government? The current system is only about getting votes and not doing anything that benefits us. Mr. McGuinty was a reckless promiser in opposition and his party had even tried to get rid of him. He has been elected by playing the game (twice now) with no real strategic plan. You got wonder at a guy who now wants to use a web based petition when many such as tax payers association, support for parents of autistic children and even the small business association have used similar tactics with him with absolutely zero positive results. Can you say PR?

don't bite the hand...

McGuinty never thought about how he's going to pay for all his massive increases in civil servants and their salaries. A strong public sector always requires a strong private sector. Someone has to pay the bills.

Grow up and govern

Have you received your property assessment yet? Lets see some real leadership and halt this annual insanity courtesy of MPAC. Mr. McGuinty road the coattails of fear in the '07 election on the religious schooling issue. It was a non starter. Mr. Tory could have OVERNIGHT turned this entire platform 180 degrees by promising a total revamp of this insane, bully pulpit tax grab. He didn't. Where were the NDP and Howard Hampton? If they raised this issue , they allowed it to be muted. The middle class is being fleeced and all the while wooed with empty promises in this campaign. WAKE UP

Really?

Sure, lets bring more competition to the provision of hydro power. Remember when Mr. Eaves let the rates for electricity float after full deregulation, and everyone hand to pay market price? The government had to step in again to prevent the public outcry from becoming riots in the streets. If we are already so incensed by the collusion of the oil conglomerates, how will it be when the electricity generators and distributors do the same thing? But by all means, Mr. Jones, lets have more competition.

Econimic denials and foolishness

McGullible was too busy boasting of irrelevant issues like banning smoking and pitbulls - the real easy stuff - how proactive. Mr Flaherty urged McG to start cutting taxes across the board, including the health tax. Instead, McG sulked and felt he was victimised - now, Ontario is in a recession and all he can do is give the doctors a big raise and shuffle the cabinet - liberals are all alike - why face reality when you can blame your foolhardyness on someone else.

Cost Over Runs

Let's end the old boys club once and for all. Ontario is shy on competition: there's very very little in hydro and very very very very little in education. This results in complacency, lack of accountability, mediocrity, and inefficiency. As Bob Rae said, " We can do better" Ontario would thrive with an injection of competition into it's highly protected socialized public work force.

No Short Term Fixes

The crisis in manufacturing has been brewing for a long time. Expect to see many more small companies in Ontario close. In the globalized economy, consolidation is a critical trend. Mass is king. Our cpompanies are typically one tenth the size of American companies. Guess who closes first when the market contracts?

MOHAWK WOMEN FILE ‘DEMAND’. CANADA MUST RESPECT THE “RULE OF LAW”.

MOHAWK WOMEN FILE ‘DEMAND’. CANADA MUST RESPECT THE “RULE OF LAW”.

MNN. Aug. 4, 2008. The following “Letter of Demand” was sent to the Attorney General of Canada. We are reminding them to fulfill their obligation to us as our historic allies to protect our rights. Canada Border Services Agents has illegally erected facilities in the midst of our community of Akwesasne and is illegally interfering with our right to live peacefully among our people. In particular, criminal assaults have been conducted against members of our community, including the assault against Kahentinetha and Katenies on June 14th 2008 at the “Cornwall Ontario” check point. According to the Canadian Constitution Canada is governed by the rule of law and everyone is equal before the law. This means that Canadian officials must obey the law, just like everyone else. When they commit an assault they should be charged with an assault under the Criminal Code just like anyone else who commits an assault. According to Federal Court of Canada rules, the Attorney General must answer this letter by August 22, 2008.

LETTER OF DEMAND

Date: July 23, 2008

WITHOUT PREJUDICE

TO: Hon. Robert Douglas Nicholson
Minister of Justice & Attorney General of Canada
284 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0H8

TAKE NOTICE THAT ON JUNE 14, 2008, KAHENTINETHA AND KATENIES, MEMBERS OF THE KANION’KE:HAKA/MOHAWK NATION, WERE ASSAULTED, BRUTALIZED, ARRESTED AND DETAINED ILLEGALLY AT THE CORNWALL BORDER.

The following are the facts giving rise to this incident.

1. On June 14, 2008 Sakowaiaks and Kahentinetha went to Akwesasne to pick up Katenies. Kahentinetha is a 68 year old grandmother. Katenies is 43 years old and also a grandmother.

2. At approximately 2:00 pm they were passing through the Canadian border control on the Cornwall portion. Akwesasne is a small community. The Canada-U.S. border has been placed in the middle of the Mohawk community. The people have to cross the border many times a day for groceries or to visit relatives.

3. Katenies, Kahentinetha and Sakowaiaks went through the border and were told to wait under the canopy. They sat there peacefully for an hour surrounded by guards. Some Mohawk elders showed up to witness. Several other vehicles were searched and released. Only Indigenous people were stopped. Eventually a platoon of about a dozen guards marched towards the car, all wearing leather gloves, flack jackets and all kinds of equipment hanging about their waist. One officer, Maurice Saucier [Badge #16121], was on the cell phone throughout directing operations during the attack on Kahentinetha and Katenies.

4. At approximately 3:00 pm Katenies was dragged violently from the back seat of the car by a gang of hefty young men and women. They knocked her down, pinned her to the ground, and forced their knees into her head and back. They handcuffed her and smashed and rubbed her face into the pavement. Sakowaiaks still remembers the sound of flesh hitting the pavement. She received bleeding scrapes and bruises on her face, shoulders, arms and legs. Katenies’ was taken into the customs building and later to Ottawa. She was not given any medical attention. She was not allowed to call her mother and her mother was not permitted to see her or speak to her. Katenies was held incommunicado for three days until she appeared in Cornwall court on June 17, 2008.

5. There were no warrants or charges out for Kahentinetha. Her ID and car keys had already been taken. Katenies’ has not been returned. Also missing are documents that were in the trunk and the shoes taken from Kahentinetha’s feet.

6. It was only after the assault on Katenies began that Kahentinetha was ordered to get out of the car. She saw what they were planning to do to her. Kahentinetha heard Maurice Saucier tell the other agents to “Take her out”. On June 14th 2008 she was afraid for her life if she got out of the car. She was right and continues to be afraid.

7. She was handcuffed, assaulted and imprisoned. Once in the cell, the attack continued. Some of the officers deliberately tightened the handcuffs she was wearing several times. This cut the circulation to her hands. The pain shot up her arms and she experienced flashes of light and pains in the middle of her chest and back. She cried for help. The guards ignored her and tightened the handcuffs more. They yelled threats at her and kept ordering her to bend down. A man stood behind her and had his hands on her pants. She received scrapes and bruises on her arms and legs.

8. Frank Horn, a Cornwall lawyer, and his son Kanatase, happened to be waiting in the line at the border. [613-935-8882]. They wouldn’t let him see his sister, Kahentinetha, until they took off the cuffs and gave her a chair to sit on. When he saw her, he immediately insisted on calling an ambulance. The Akwesasne Police stood and watched in silence. The ambulance took her to Cornwall Community Hospital and the Ottawa Ontario Heart Institute. She remained in hospital for 5 days in the trauma unit and intensive care unit. Since that time she had a relapse and was hospitalized at the Anna Laberge Hospital in Chateauguay Quebec.

9. The medical record confirms that despite excellent physical condition Kahentinetha had a trauma induced heart attack. Her recovery will take a long time. Part of her heart was killed. Her health will never be the same. Both women are now recuperating in the company of their children and grandchildren.

10. None of these women is associated with any kind of criminal activity.

11. The video footage of the assaults on Kahentinetha and Katenies on June 14th 2008 have been confiscated by Canada‘s Department of “National Defense”. We are informed the only way to obtain these videos is to “waive our rights”. .

12. Some of the CBSA officers had the following badge numbers: 17012; 16320; 16511; 16121; and 16275; Some of those involved and responsible for border issues are Alain Jolicoeur, President of CBSA 613-952-3200; Lance Markel, District Director CBSA 613-930-3234; Hon. Stockwell Day, Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness 613-995-1703 day.s@parl.gc.ca; Dave MacKenzie, Parliamentary Secretary, Public Safety, 613-995-4432 mackenzie.d@parl.gc.ca; Akwesasne Mohawk Police 613-575-2250 ext. 2400; and Louis Mitchell, Mohawk Security 613-932-5183, 613-575-2340;

13. We have reason to believe that the Canadian “state” conspired to kill us. These assaults appear to have been carried out by the Canada Border Security Agency, Canada Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Akwesasne Mohawk Police Services and Mohawk Security Officers, all agencies of the Canadian government. The courts of “Canada” are presently issuing false charges and attempting to serve warrants on Kahentinetha and Katenies.

DEMAND FOR RELEASE:

14. The individuals who assaulted the three women must be charged, tried and punished.
15. Full and complete undoctored copies of the video footage of this event.
16. Full disclosure of all files and official communications concerning the cases of Kahentinetha and Katenies.
17. $10 million for physical, psychological and punitive damages and such other relief as this court may deem fit.

Deadline for settlement:

18. An order that all Canadian government agencies will respect the time delays set out in the rules of court.

How I spent Memorial Day ..

The government will NOT allow me to upload the poster for today's Queen Park event.

They've turned off my photo button on blogger entirely after repeated attempts to upload the poster. Isn't that INTERESTING ?? Partly it's the time of day, as the information warfare people are usually busy after midnight, although I've noticed that their alot more militant in recent days at all times of the day or night.

Today, the sun was magnificent and warm. The spirit was high. The music was passionate and the dancers stretched their limbs in the rhythm of the Universe. HOPE and vitality reached into the Ontario sky.

Thomas King was the master of ceremonies and I spoke with him. We spoke of Pat Amo and Paul Wellstone. We spoke of Leonard Peltier. I explained I am not comfortable being in Canada and need a true mentor !

I spoke to several Toronto students and asked them to come and help me straighten out this blog. I was thrilled when one student leader handed me a four directions button that said "Students for Justice". All students there expressed a similar perspective: a WAR CRIMES tribunal is inevitable and CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY must be stopped. (well, of course!) Our vision is stronger than the power that be's bottom line.

The true spirit of Kanata was there. Toronto truly hailed it's true name - "The meeting place". I think I have come home at last. I no longer felt "invisible".

Leaders were missed, leaders who languish in jail and face 12-sentences for DOING THE RIGHT THING.

Surprisingly, I only saw one person I know there, but over the course of the week I expect to meet some "old faces" I know ..

We can never give up. We will stand firm in our resolve.

I expect to find myself on the concourse of the Toronto Star on Friday. Even my interpol computer entry as a "jet set drug dealer" can't deter me anymore ! I have nothing to lose by being who I am and I support my brothers and sisters.

Ontario is now on the front line in ending globalization and fighting colonialism. The powers that be know that are frightened out of their wits as we build our ranks.

I go to light smudge now, praying for ALL peoples and thanking Creator that I have come this far.

Aboriginal protesters kick off weeklong protest at Ont. legislature

TORONTO - The property rights of all Ontario residents are being threatened by archaic mining laws that allow companies to stake land anywhere they like, aboriginal protesters said Monday before a swelling crowd that gathered on a the front lawn of the provincial legislature to demand change.

And if the province doesn't act now to change the Mining Act, politicians can expect another Ipperwash, an emotional Darryl Sainnawap, one of six Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) First Nation members who were jailed over a dispute with a mining exploration company said in reference to the infamous 1995 aboriginal standoff that ended in the fatal shooting of protester Dudley George by police.

Among the guests of honour at the multi-day sit-in that's expected to culminate with Thursday's national aboriginal Day of Action, Sainnawap thanked the crowd for supporting him while he was in jail and called on the government to negotiate.

"I personally want to call on the provincial government to come to the table and see if we can find a resolution,"
he said before the mass of several hundred, which included aboriginal groups from across the province and beyond as well as labour groups and environmentalists.

"But I would also like to say our land comes first... Ontario says get on board, get out of the way, or go to jail. We cannot compromise our children's future."

Sainnawap, along with KI Chief Donny Morris, deputy chief Jack McKay and members Sam McKay, Cecilia Begg and Bruce Sakakeep, were all released from jail temporarily on Friday after agreeing to abide by an injunction that prohibits them from interfering with the operations of Platinex Inc., a mining company that's seeking to drill on KI land about 600 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ont.

The decision was made only after Platinex promised not to bring an exploration crew onto the disputed land before 9 a.m. Thursday.

The group dubbed the KI 6 is due back in court Wednesday where they are appealing their six-month sentence for contempt of court. The Ontario Appeals Court could decide they've served enough time and release them or send them back to jail to serve out the remainder of their sentence.

The brief reprieve, however, gave them the opportunity to join fellow KI members as well as colleagues from Ardoch Algonquin First Nations in eastern Ontario and Grassy Narrows First Nation near Kenora, Ont. All three groups organized the event, originally aimed in part at calling for their release.

Bob Lovelace of Ardoch Algonquin First Nation still remains in jail in solitary confinement on a hunger strike for a similar breach involving a uranium exploration company.

The group called for his release and also played a recording he made from jail to share with the crowd.

In it, Lovelace called for an end to "colonialism" and compared the situation of Canada's aboriginals to that of organized labour and apartheid South Africa.

"Our time is now and I say that any political party or government in Canada that defends and perpetuates colonialism is not fit to govern," he said to much applause.

Earlier in the day, Morris said he was anticipating a peaceful event, though he suggested organizers were getting some blow back from authorities.

Morris said it was curious that security guards were giving them a hard time about using tent pegs on the lawn of the legislature, yet mining companies could stake their land any time they like.

"They've been throwing hurdles in our way from what I gather. Trying to discourage us from doing this," he said, adding he's "directed the membership to hold back."

"I'm not trying to encourage violence or foul language... I like the way we're travelling right now on the road. Peaceful, trying to communicate, putting out press releases, using the Internet. That's how I want to work."

Noting Ontario came to his community in 1929 to sign a treaty, Morris said KI ought to be involved in the revamping of the Mining Act and suggested there's been no such consultation as of yet.

He also encouraged non-aboriginals to get involved as it's an issue that comes down to property rights and the environment which effect everybody.

"If you have private property, a cottage on a lake, you are in the same boat as us," he said. "You don't own the land."

Toting flags and placards, the protesters erected three teepees on the lawn and are expected to camp out overnight and spend the coming days holding traditional aboriginal ceremonies as well as workshops. Guest speakers are also expected throughout the week.

Premier Dalton McGuinty reaffirmed earlier in the day that the province is committed to changing the Mining Act, but that it will take time.

He said current laws are very much tied into the economy but he nonetheless recognizes the government must also take into account aboriginal and environmental concerns.

"I think it falls on my generation of leadership to do something about this because I don't think what we have in place is... in keeping with our standards, our values and our aspirations," he said, adding changing it will have a "ripple effect" on jobs.

"We can't just dismiss that."

Uranium Producer Warns Of Lake Ontario Pollution

Cameco, the world’s largest uranium producer, has told the Canadian nuclear regulator that its refinery might have leaked uranium, arsenic and fluorides into Lake Ontario.

The plant at Port Hope, Ontario, across the lake from Rochester, New York, and down the shore from Toronto, first refined uranium for the Manhattan Project during World War II. It has been temporarily closed since July to remove contaminated soil.

A spokesman for Cameco, Lyle Krahn, said Wednesday that a computer model created for the cleanup, which is several months behind schedule, indicated that the radioactive and toxic materials have been polluting a harbor adjacent to the factory. The harbor leads directly to the lake.

The company notified the regulatory agency, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, about the finding at a meeting last week and now plans drilling tests to confirm the contamination and to measure its extent.

“We’re anticipating that material may have been entering the harbor,” said Krahn, adding that Cameco did not know how long it would take to confirm any possible pollution.

A spokesman for the agency, Aurele Gervais, said: “The Port Hope UF6 plant matter has been ongoing for some time and the harbor issue is a recent development,” using the chemical formula for uranium hexafluoride.

In a background paper prepared for the agency’s commissioners last week, its staff concluded that the potential remained for continued water pollution from the plant.

Cameco in general and the aging Port Hope refinery, which transforms mined uranium into forms suitable for electrical power reactors, have long been targets of environmental groups and the regulatory agency.

After a flood last year closed one of the company’s mines, which produces about 10 percent of the world’s uranium, Linda J. Keen, then the head of the regulatory agency, said her commissioners and staff had a “lack of confidence” in Cameco and its management.

Gordon Edwards, the president of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, an environmental group in Montreal, said that contamination of the lake had been assumed, given the plant’s age, history and location.

“There’s a long history of contamination at Port Hope,” he said. “The whole siting of this refinery is absurd. It’s right in the center of town, it’s on flood plain and right on the lakefront.”

The plant was opened in the 1930s by Eldorado Mining and Refining to process radium and has undergone several cleanups.

The most recent effort began in July when a construction project at the factory uncovered soil contamination that led to the plant’s closing. At the time, the company said that the shutdown and cleanup would take about two months. Krahn said the 18 million-Canadian-dollar project, which involves removing soil under the plant and constructing a leakproof floor, will be finished by the third quarter.

If drilling confirms lake pollution, Krahn said that Cameco did not expect that would delay the plant’s reopening.

Maybe this is why the Rothschild's have been screaming at EXXON MOBIL about the lack of investment of alternative energies?

The plot was to get uranium out of Ontario, just up the river from Port Hope!

The Mohawk's were right. Why should we all be turned into glow worms because Dalton McGuinty says so?

Hm wonder how old Dalton is sleeping tonight, anyway.

More Charges Laid: Clampdown Intensifies
Support Tyendinaga Mohawks!

(May 20, 2008)

In the wake of recent road closures, OPP intimidation, and jailing of Mohawk community members, charges have now been laid by the OPP against at least 9 additional Tyendinaga Mohawks. These charges, according to police, stem from "events that occurred in and around Deseronto," between April 21 and 26. According to the OPP, the investigations are ongoing and additional charges may be laid against other Mohawks. While none of the 9 people recently charged were forced to remain in police custody, and are free to go home to their families, all carry conditions of 'no protests' and 'not to be present at the quarry site'.

Three men remain in custody at this time, awaiting trial - Clint Brant, Matt Kunkel, and Shawn Brant. Shawn Brant's trial date has been set for mid-June.

The current situation in Tyendinaga is developing into a sweeping crack-down on community members, the stifling of resistance to increased policing and further development of the Culbertson Tract, while federal monies are being poured into the Territory for policing matters and an RCMP report is released, citing federal government intentions to dedicate police "to fighting contraband, which he [Stockwell Day] said is funding organized crime and possibly even terrorists" in three Mohawk communities, including Tyendinaga.

It is important to remember that the feds' concern with Native-made smokes and sales go much deeper than their own pocket book. It is not simply the lost tax revenue that they suffer, but the fact that the lost dollars go to sustain Mohawk families and other services and allows for the Mohawk Nation to stand, as it always has, as a clear and organized force of resistance against the Canadian government's practices of assimilation and control of First Nations peoples.

It is the efforts to strengthen Mohawk Nations' economies and sovereignty that threatens the implementation of Canada's colonial agenda. The policing agendas of the Canadian government aim to crack down on this assertion of self-sufficiency and strength, not, as they claim, "organized crime".

OPP Weaponry and Escalation:

Update on the Struggle for the Culbertson Tract

Update from the Tyendinaga Support Committee (May 13, 2008)

While the quarry site, part of the disputed Culbertson Tract, has remained under Mohawk reclamation since March 2007, the Mohawks of Tyendinaga recently successfully halted another non-Native development effort on the Tract – this successful action led to a series of alarming and serious events.

In late April, a Kingston realtor, Emile Nibourg, made loud public plans to begin construction on the Culbertson Tract, culminating in a written commitment to bring a crew of "25 to 30 guys" to the site. The Mohawks of Tyendinaga responded by closing roads immediately adjacent to the proposed site, which they held for several days. While the OPP swat team was eventually brought in to remove the Mohawks from the roads, no confrontation ensued, and Nibourg backed away from his plans to build on stolen land.

Several days later, after the roads had been reopened, Mohawk spokesperson Shawn Brant was arrested during an interview he was conducting with APTN. Shawn's final words during his arrest on Friday were "This is it, justice for first nations communities: lock us up. Anybody who speaks out, lock-em up. KI6, Bob Lovelace: lock-em up...Don't fix the problems, lock-em up."

Despite the reporting in mainstream press, Shawn Brant's arrest on Friday, April 25th stemmed from an incident that took place days before. Specifically, Shawn Brant has been charged for his role in preventing further attacks on two Mohawk woman and a young child by racist rednecks from the town of Deseronto (see below for more on Shawn's arrest).

Supporters rushed to the quarry after watching or hearing of Shawn's arrest. His arrest sparked off police actions that led to the jailing of four other Mohawks, the OPP pulling their weapons on community members at the reclaimed quarry site, and a weekend of tense stand-offs and road blockades. Psychological warfare on the part of the police resulted in a tense face-off between the OPP and community members that lasted for days.

The same weekend, Six Nations community members erected a blockade of the Highway 6 bypass, near Caledonia, in support of the Tyendinaga Mohawks. This blockade was not removed until Six Nations received confirmation that the OPP had withdrawn from the Mohawks of Tyendinaga.

Following Shawn's arrest, Matt Kunkel, Clint Brant, Dan Doreen, and Steve Chartrand were charged and jailed. Dan, spokesperson for the earlier Mohawk road closures on Highway 2, and Steve have since been released with strict conditions. A couple from the community who were also arrested by the OPP were later were released unconditionally. Matt and Clint, along with Shawn, remain in maximum-security pre-trial custody in Quinte Regional Detention Centre in Napanee, until trial.

Ontario has opted for the incarceration of First Nations people over the resolution of outstanding land issues as their status quo. As for the Ontario Provincial Police, it appears the adoption of Justice Linden's Ipperwash Inquiry recommendations is experiencing some delay. During the road closures in Deseronto, an OPP officer on the scene audibly commented to her colleagues, "We should just shoot them (Mohawks) all." Following the arrests of the 5 Mohawks, the OPP claimed to have seen 'one long gun' at the quarry site, prompting the officers on the scene to pull their weapons out. The Mohawks at the quarry were not armed. The memories of Dudley George have not faded. And while in custody at the Napanee OPP Detachment, several different officers repeatedly informed Shawn Brant that they were going to "slit his throat".

Once again, for his role as a spokesperson in the community, Shawn Brant is facing trumped-up charges. These new charges were laid less than two weeks after Shawn Brant was acquitted of charges alleging that he threatened Canadian Forces soldiers during a demonstration to prevent development of the Culbertson Tract in 2006. Shawn is now forced to remain in jail at least until his trial on these latest charges, which is to take place in mid-June. Further updates on those charged will be coming soon.

As well as dealing with five of their community members now facing charges, the people of Tyendinaga are also facing another serious challenge. The OPP has struck a deal with the Band Council to build a new police station on Tyendinaga territory, ostensibly for the Tyendinaga Reserve Police force (employed by the OPP). Community members have questioned why the four-man force needs a bullet-proof, 5,000-square-foot facility. An identical structure on Mohawk land the Akwesasne Reserve in Quebec is now home not only to the local Reserve cops, but also to the OPP and the RCMP. The deal between the Band Council and the OPP, in which the Band will spend $1.2 million on the new station, with an additional $1 million contributed by the Province of Ontario and Stockwell Day's Federal Ministry of Public Safety, was made without proper consultation with the community. The Men's and Youth Councils, who meet at the recently constructed community longhouse, have openly voiced their opposition to the station, saying the money is needed more urgently elsewhere on the reserve. Meanwhile, construction on the new station has, as of printing time, now begun.

The Province of Ontario refuses to take responsibility for the actions of its police force, the OPP, while also continuing to abdicate responsibility for their role in the licensing of the non-Native quarry operations. The quarry itself now sits partially flooded, while the Mohawks continue their reclamation of the site until government acts to return it to them. The federal government continues to languish at the negotiation table, while making noise in the mainstream press about crackdowns on the Native cigarette industry, and the land – long acknowledged as belonging to the Mohawks – remains unreturned.

Ontario mad at Federal Government over Caledonia land claims - FINALLY

Set Caledonia deadline, Bryant urges Ottawa

Settle land claim rather than point finger at Ontario, minister says

May 15, 2008 04:30 AM
Richard Brennan
OTTAWA BUREAU

OTTAWA–The federal government is being urged by Ontario Aboriginal Affairs Minister Michael Bryant to put a deadline on land claim negotiations in Caledonia instead of letting them drag on with no resolution in sight.

"We say to the federal government with respect to this 200-year-old dispute, it's time for them to set a deadline and set it now,"
Bryant told the Legislature yesterday.

Federal Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl seemed taken aback, saying Bryant hadn't communicated this new sense of urgency to him.

"Certainly we have been pretty aggressive in Caledonia to try to do just that. We've tabled a $125 million offer to the First Nations there and expanded the mandate of our negotiator to explore options there," Strahl told reporters on Parliament Hill.

"We are working hard to settle it."

Bryant said tensions are growing among residents in Caledonia, a town southwest of Hamilton. They have, for more than two years, lived with the occupation of a former housing development by members of the Six Nations band protesting unresolved land claims.

"Instead of being content to sit on their hands, and actually literally point fingers at the provincial government ... it's time for the federal government to actually take responsibility for something that is their responsibility," Bryant told reporters later at Queen's Park.

In 2006, native protesters blocked the Caledonia bypass, the town's main road and the rail line after police raided the occupation site. When the bypass was blocked again earlier this month, clashes broke out between Six Nations protesters and Caledonia residents.

Bryant said claims focus on the Haldimand Tract following the Grand River "and the question is what the federal government did exactly and what the compensation is owed by the federal government to Haudenosaunee Six Nations."

Jason Kenney, Minister of Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity, caused a stir during a recent trip to Brantford when he blamed the province not reining in Six Nations Confederacy activists who have blocked projects there and demanded cash from developers.

Kenney called the activists' actions "extortion" said "the law should apply equally."

Yesterday, Strahl urged the province "to remain part of these negotiations. It's important that people understand that finding solutions to these complex issues will take time."

Hey, wouldn't it be NOBLE if these guys quit having liquid lunches and actually DID something for once?

It'll look BAD to have Canada apologize for
residential schools when you still don't settle
200-year old land claims.

About time Michael Bryant got MOUTHY !!

He's my MP, in fact, and I called them and bitched.

Is there enough to go around?

Okay, folks, face it. Ontario is falling to bits although it looks just fine if you're not looking very hard. But the cracks which are being wallpapered over are being to show STRESS.

How far can they stretch the "security forces" and maintain the budget? That would SEEM to be the question, when in fact the question really is: Why are the tac squads being raided in order to cover the state coming to the rescue of the plutocracy!

It was interesting to find this editorial outta Muskoka on a google alert about Caledonia. (Remember: although not charged, those white hooligans in Caledonia cause the trouble! )

Notice how the writer ( obviously a Conservative Party member ) doesn't mention it's the FEDERAL government's obligation to uphold treaty rights!

It's cheaper in the short and long to uphold human rights over policing to push people around for profit ..

May 07, 2008

A dispute that has disrupted life in a southern Ontario town for the past couple of years has raised the ire of District of Muskoka chair Gord Adams, especially once he heard that local police officers have been dispatched to deal with the conflict in Caledonia, as well as in Deseronto.

Bracebridge OPP Inspector Ed Medved reported to the district mayors last week that several local officers have been seconded to specialized police units across the province, including a police sergeant and two constables, to serve in the native disputes, as well as four of the detachment’s Emergency Response Team members, who are called away on an as-needed basis.

Although all of these officers are currently serving in our detachment area, it is of concern that local resources are being used to handle a dispute that has clearly gone on too long.

Adams is correct in saying the provincial government needs to step into the situation in Caledonia, which began in February 2006, and has cost taxpayers millions and millions of dollars. The OPP, or any other police force, should not be used as a long-standing peacekeeping resource. Responding to an emergency we understand, but a standoff turned into a stalemate is something else entirely.

The negotiations are not working, as the situation continues to flare up, and surely OPP resources could be better utilized in our district. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty should call up former Liberal premier David Peterson, who stepped into the breach two years ago to help solve the crisis, and demand some results.

While the officers seconded from Muskoka are being paid for by the province, as opposed to the District of Muskoka, there needs to be a more effective solution to negotiating situations like Caledonia, Deseronto and Ipperwash. The underlying issues at stake go far beyond provincial and certainly municipal jurisdictions. Having the OPP stand by to maintain civil order is a band-aid solution at best.

How much longer the McGuinty Liberals will let this pathetic stalemate continue before they develop constructive ways to remedy and prevent these disputes is unfortunately anyone’s guess.

"WATCH THE COPS" - CANADIAN battle cry!! - MNN news

”WATCH THE COPS” DAY ON MAY 29 AND EVERY DAY MNN.

April 28, 2008. Canada and Phil Fontaine of the “Assembly of Colonial First Nations” would like to see us standing by the side of the road with our heads down, tears rolling down our cheeks and handing out pamphlets on their “Aboriginal Day of Action” on May 29th. [Beware! It’s an Indigenous “set up” day!] Many think this should be “watch the goons day”. We could walk, drive or bicycle through the roads, streets and highways of our communities and document police brutality and oppression. We’ll be needing a great big notebook for this.

Non-Indigenous communities have their problems with cops too. Maybe they’ll join us. Recently a young student was given a $628 ticket for “sitting on a wall in a park” and for snapping pictures of them on his cell phone. They were harassing homeless people.

We should be monitoring these colonial henchmen. It’s come to the point now where it’s not really safe to go out alone anymore. The abuse has got to stop. Take cameras, cell phones, become a witness and make good notes. We need names, badge numbers and photos of the abuse and the abusers. Then we should file complaints, take them to court and put pressure on politicians who cave into police pressure.

We need “know-your-rights” classes. “Watch the goons” should make periodical reports and publish them regularly on the internet. We want to reduce Police Violence Through Accountability; and to Empower and Unite our communities by looking out for each other. [From: berkeley-copwatch@lists.riseup.net]

In Montreal when the Montreal Canadians hockey team won their series against the Boston Bruins, there was a riot on St. Catherine Street. The media coverage showed cop cars being burnt and kids jumping up and down on top of the cars. Many young people were assaulted and arrested. The police confiscated mainstream media footage so no one could see that they had gotten out of their cars, went over to a crowd of young people and started smashing them for no reason at all. People with phone cameras put these images on the internet. It was an emotional response to abuse. The cops have become the worse abusers.

Watch out for agent provocateurs. They arrive dressed like us, with back packs on their back full of rocks and other implements. They start throwing these at the police and then disappear into the crowd. We get the blame. Let’s face it, cops are attracted to violence. They can’t stand peaceful people. So they try to stir things up so they can use all the expensive toys they claim to need. One of their most despicable tactics is to target and attack young women. This provokes otherwise peaceful men to come to their defense who are then beaten and arrested. What a violent profession. We do not approve of the theory that peace can be gained by violent means.

The cops assume that those who protest their abuse must be under the spell of some kind of “leader”. They don’t want their misdeeds to be made public. There is nothing original about what the cops are doing. They phone the acquaintances of their target and try to get information or get them on side, even offer money and safety. Safety from what! Them? What’s the difference between police action and extortion? In other words, don’t have a leader for them to target!

The cops want more control in Southeastern Ontario because it’s getting harder to illegally siphon the resources of enlightened Indigenous people. The highly trained people like doctors, miners, scientists, politicians, military and corporation heads need relative order to go about their job of stealing our water and energy.

The factory jobs are now outsourced. This area is being built up for the elites. We Indigenous people are in their way. This puts us at risk. They still have depopulation plans for us in areas where they don’t want us. Haudenosaunee Territory includes prime land and a vast watershed.

For example, condos were going to be built on the beautiful Bay of Quinte until we stopped it. The elite always want to be on the water. We Mohawks spoil their view. These condos might have been for the workers at the new proposed U.S. Joint Task Force 2 Training Base that is being set up at Trenton Ontario, just a 20-minute drive from Tyendinaga.

Sharbot Lake-Robertsville Mine site is half way between Trenton and Petawawa Army Bases. Sharbot Lake is also half way between Port Hope and Chalk River, which have the most depleted uranium stored for use by the military to make bombs.

Trenton Army Base is right near Port Hope to guard that nuclear waste. Petawawa soldiers would be available to clean up nuclear messes at Chalk River, as happened in 1958 when one of the research reactors took a leak.

The colonists don’t want all-out warfare here. In guerrilla warfare our great strength is when we are on our home turf. We know it and we feel the power that comes from being truly Indigenous. This is not understood by the colonists. They come from fragmented and abused backgrounds. They don’t know what a real community is. In their ignorance they’ve fallen under the delusion that they have to use “low level” warfare by attacking, harassing, taking prisoners, breaking our arms, surrounding us from time to time and putting out bad stories about us to scare the public. The alternative, peaceful co-existence, is simply unthinkable to them.

Their psychological warfare strategies are meant to destroy all hope amongst our people and sow seeds of terror in our communities. They want to create fear and submission.

The cops wear armor and cover their faces with hideous visors and shave their heads like fascists. They are loaded with so much equipment they can hardly hear, see or move. These cops are scared and not sure why they’re in our communities pointing guns at unarmed people but they’re getting big pay. There are women and children on the roads too. The cops stand there shivering afraid of what will happen to them if they don’t follow the crazy orders they are being given.

The Mohawks took some of the stuffing out of the OPP cops who have been trying out some of their low level warfare tactics on us which aren’t working. If we have courage and know we are right in what we are doing, then we will stand up to them. This perplexes them. They thought it was going to be over a long time ago. Obviously they haven’t read their history. We’re still here after 400 years. And we ain’t going nowhere.

Our persistence and perseverance comes from our ancestors. We are so well rooted with nourishment from the land. A “transplant’s” root has to adjust for a long time to gain strength from the earth, but their roots really don’t take. Most of them tumble about like rolling stones, shifting with every twist and turn of the bankrupt and exploitive economy they brought here.

Such transplants need a lot of crutches – like guns, propaganda, barking vicious dogs, choppers, sirens, floodlights, loud noises, UAVs [unarmed aerial vehicles for “peeping tom” surveillance], victims to target and lots of larceny. Their next step is to throw us all into their colonial jails and courts. These transplants keep trying to replace the Ongwehonwe of Onowaregeh. It hasn’t happened and never will. We keep popping up. The natural world has decreed that we shall always be here doing our job, taking care of the land, plants, animals, water and air.

The non-natives who are organized against us are not political. Otherwise they would be on our side. They would realize their own oppression and abuse by the colonists. The police hire provocateurs to mobilize them. They help set up situations that make it look good for the cops to come in.

They made the recent riot at Six Nations look like the OPP were protecting the Indigenous people from the angry vigilantes from Caledonia. This makes the conservatives start okaying money for more policing and more force against us. For the cops this means job security and more opportunity to take out vengeance on us.

It’s part of some big plan of a few people. It’s called “mobilizing the masses” to “harmonize the peripheries with the center”. The peripheries are Mexico and Canada and the center is the U.S., of course. They rile up society so they will get a bigger budget, be in greater demand and get control over everybody.

The center wants “death squad” type policing like in Chicago, New York, Toronto and Los Angeles, where they hit the people, do open racial profiling and are extremely corrupt internally. Is this happening in all Indigenous communities right now worldwide?

On May 29th Canada with their chief provocateur, Phil Fontaine, who wants to cash in on the re-enactment of the “Sand Creek Massacre”, are coming in with a plan to push the “final solution”. Watch out. Be ready!

ACTVISM SUPER ALERT: Help out the Lake Ardoch protestors TODAY

Please circulate this WIDELY
Ladybroadoak.blogspot.com

to find out what is needed, press on the links below!!!

This is merely some media and go
vernment link information.

Much is needed to help out today!

First off - if anyone wants to come up, my apartment is available!! I will even drag my poor aching body around to clean it up. Creator will give me the strength, I am sure. You can leave a comment on the comments section if you see this.

Read on to see what is need urgently NOW.

This is definitely serious!! Anyone, anyone who will help out is welcome to accept what is extremely humble hospitality.

Once before when RAN had a LIVE demo at Queen's Park, he took the Premier's website down and the telephone lines were TURNED OFF, just last fall. Dalton McGuinty's cousin, FRANK, is one of the primary benefactors of the du and edumping monies!!

I did some checking with Lauren Moret this weekend to figure out the power that be's plans for Canada and particularly Ontario. What she told me only confirms what I already KNOW. There is HUGE MONEY RIDING on shutting DOWN THESE PROTESTS; they sure need EVERYONE'S help and they need it today. She is on here way to a speaking tour in Canada right now. Lauren Moret had me do my lowlevel radiation blog.

Canada is the ruling class' river of nuclear destruction; CN RAIL is one of the 30 corporations set up to run North America. Their head, Hunter Harrison, changed CN rail to hauling all sorts of Nuclear Waste - This is why CN rail went after Shawn Brant. And now they REALLY have him. He goes to court this morning and that is why the ptb are trying to split up OUR forces today. The press firmly sealed its lips about all this abuse over the weekend including the CBC, which we bloody pay for. OUTRAGEOUS. Comeco has done some heavy lobbying and the influence peddling must be INTENSE. Frontenac Ventures is a FRONT.

Additionally, I have a lot of information about earthquakes coming in Abbotsford, BC shortly. There will be traditional lands affected by those two. Martial law may be declared in my opinion; it's all a big fat SETUP. This neocon government will stop at nothing to put all activists behind bars and SHUT UP.

Please send SMOKE to everyone on traditional lands (and in our dingy government apartments, too) here in Canada.

The head of the OPP here in Ontario, Julian Fantino, is slated to be the new head of the RCMP when the Vancouver Olympics are held. This is his "testing ground" I assure you all. He regularly surveils my blog(s) from a location in Barrie. So ... please, get on with the support before he takes me DOWN. So, far he hasn't managed it due to the fact Google uses me as an intelligence source, seriously!! But they never ever index my Ardoch Lake OR Caledonia articles that I see.

I am SO busy, I don't even have time to write proper articles on this, so bear with me. I have gone all out to get GLOBAL ATTENTION FOCUSSED on what is happening here. If there is someone shot today this will be just like OKA very shortly.

Here is a link to ALL government MPs in Canada

Time is of the essence, friends. Just FLOOD ONTARIO and Canadian government officials. I'll be back when that Abbotsford thang starts happening and repost these links

What happened - How you can help -Tyendinaga

Update: Sunday, April 27, 2008 – Needs of

Mohawks - Contacts of cops and politicians

MNN. Apr. 27, 2008. An email came from the real estate

agents, Emile and Theodore Nibourg,

enibourg@sutton.com.

These are the guys who wanted

to build condos on Mohawk land, or at least they wanted

to make it look like they were building condos. They

knew the Mohawks would object. They even told some

of us they were hoping to get a pay out guaranteeing

their profits from Canadian taxpayers when the deal fell

through. What a scam! The "OPP" [who help the thieves

of "Other Peoples Property"] fell for it hook, line and

sinker. These are Nibourg's puppets. You can

practically see the strings. In a press statement Nibourg

said, "We sent out a media release last week stating we

are refraining from continuing our plans to develop the

land to allow for a peaceful resolution and negotiations

with the government".

We want peace too. There is nothing to resolve. If

someone was trespassing on your land, what would

you expect the police to do? Kick them off or kick you

off? Why are the police on Mohawk land? They were

not invited, Nibourg's gone, the cops are trespassing!

They are also violating international law by unlawfully

confining our people.

Throughout the Rotiskenekete have not blocked any

roads. Commissioner of the OPP, Julian Fantino, said,

"There are no blockages except for the ones we put up.

It's all peaceful now." Even though the Globe and Mail

has published photos of the cops pointing guns at us

and beating up our people, Fantino tried to deny this

happened in a Canadian Press release, of April 26th.

He said, "There are claims on blogs that police officers

pointed their guns at unarmed women and children,

broke people's arms and beat prisoners". Fantino went

on to say, "I think it's inflaming what is already a very

tenuous, very difficult situation".

Fantino didn't denying any of this. There's obviously

a double standards in Canadian society. A photo of

an ordinary person resisting violence results in

immediate charges and an arraignment in court. A

photo of a cop doing the same things results in

excuses, foot shuffling and obfuscation. It looks like

becoming a cop makes them immune from prosecution.

It's becoming a magnet for thugs. Fantino doesn't like

it when the brutality and law breaking of his henchmen

gets publicized. [MNN has photos of cops standing

behind their patrol cars, pointing their weapons at us.

Also, in the Globe and Mail is a photo of the cops

beating one of our men in the ditch and breaking his

arms.]

Fantino told the Globe Mail, "The hard work and

dedication of our officers in protecting the citizens of

this community cannot go unnoticed". No kidding!

We have you on video beating up our people.

"Those

responsible for criminal activities will be held

accountable". If this is true, we expect to see some

cops wearing handcuffs in court prisoner's dock.

The standoff at the quarry continues. OPP are still

holding their positions, though their numbers have

decreased. Talks are ongoing between Tyendinaga

Mohawks and the OPP.

Today the OPP sent a message to the Rotiskenekete

at the quarry on Mohawk land. "Let's agree to walk

away from this and go our separate ways and then

nothing will happen"!!! Remember what happened the

other day when the OPP were arresting Shawn Brant

for a fake charge? They said the same thing. When

our five men got into their cars, ten OPP goons jumped

them, threw them in the ditch and beat them up. They

broke both arms of one native man and one arm of

another. Then the OPP put out a lie that one of our men

had a gun.

The Rotiskenekete listened and told the officer, "Put

out a statement that our men did not have guns and

that you lied, and then maybe we'll talk to you".

The community is still holding strong both inside the

quarry and outside on nearby Slash Road. There are

a significant number of supporters. People from other

Indigenous communities arrived last night and today.

Visits from allies are welcome. Come during daylight

hours. The situation is less tense at this moment, but

dynamics can shift suddenly.

Urgently Needed are – first aid - water - money -

non-perishable foods – meat – fish - camping

equipment – communications equipment – fuel – gas –

propane – mobile phones – phone cards – rain coats –

towels – soap – wet wipes – tooth brushes – tooth

can think of. Once again, the police have turned what

should have been a non-event into a summer project.

Directions to the site: take TransCanada Highway 401

to the "Marysville/Deseronto" exit (east of Belleville).

This is the exit to Highway 49. Go south [right] on

highway 49 for about 10-15 minutes. You'll pass a stop

sign "Tyendinaga". Once you hit the Slash Road, turn

left. Drive until you see the people and a big bonfire.

Tyendinaga_support@masses.tao.ca.

The five arrested on false charges of assaulting OPP

on Deseronto Road, are Matthew James KUNKEL, 21,

Clint BRANT, 29, Daniel John DORENE, 34, and Steve

CHARTRAND, 32. All four men are from the

Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. They are scheduled to

appear on Monday, April 28, 2008 in Napanee court.

The names, ages and places of residence of the ten

trespassing police officers who committed the assault

on our men are unknown. Shawn BRANT, 44 years,

was remanded into custody and is also scheduled to

appear in Napanee court on Monday, April 28, 2008.
