Feds Prepare To Scour P2P Networks

Published on Sunday, April 20, 2008.

Source: Truth News - Kurt Nimmo

In order to “monitor and map illicit file sharing activity on popular P2P networks, web sites, and chat rooms,” the feds are pushing the scourge of child porno, supposedly rampant on the internet if we believe the corporate media.

“At a hearing yesterday before the Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Drugs, anti-child porn activists urged the Senators to increase the FBI’s budget for combating child porn online and to move forward with plans to create a next-generation network monitoring and database system that can ferret out child porn trafficking on P2P networks, web sites, and chat rooms,” reports Jon Stokes for Ars Technica. “The new system would be hosted on the FBI’s Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) network and would give more law enforcement agents across the country access to an existing system, based in Wyoming, that’s currently being used to find and catch online child porn traffickers.”

But if we read headlines, we discover the FBI is more interested in snagging antiwar activists than child porno traffickers.

“The FBI has collected extensive information on the tactics, training and organization of antiwar demonstrators and has advised local law enforcement officials to report any suspicious activity at protests to its counterterrorism squads, according to interviews and a confidential bureau memorandum,”
the New York Times reported back in 2003, less than a year after the neocon bombed and invaded Iraq. “
FBI officials said in interviews that the intelligence-gathering effort was aimed at identifying anarchists and ‘extremist elements’ plotting violence, not at monitoring the political speech of law-abiding protesters.”

As it turns out, a lot of those supposed anarchists are in fact government agents, as they were at the NAU summit in Montebello, Canada, a fact reported by the corporate media. In the United States, “law-abiding protesters” have been targeted and “neutralized” for decades by way of intimidation, harassment, discrediting, snitch jacketing, a whole assortment of authoritarian and illegal tactics, and the FBI trailblazed the way.

Sure, the FBI may grab a child porno dealer or two, but if history is any indication the intended target of the “next-generation network monitoring and database system” will be activists.

Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey hit on something back in 2005 when he “wondered if the FBI was considering any one who protested government policy as a potential terrorist,” as the Christian Science Monitor reported at the time. Lautenberg, a self-described “tree hugger,” worried that the Ministry of Homeland Security would go after the Sierra Club. No, of course not, as the Sierra Club is a machination of the Rockefeller and Ford foundations and enjoys protected status, but the same is not the case for antiwar and patriot movement activists, or at least those not associated with the feds. In order to destroy an resistance, the FBI needs pervasive snoop ability and a “next-generation network monitoring and database system.”

Busting child pornographers is simply the most effective way to sell it.

SPP: World "free" trade and Montebello ..

This 10 minute video is a summary of the top ten reasons to oppose the two worst trade agreements in Canadian history, TILMA (the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement) and the SPP (the Security and Prosperity Partnership). It is the first chapter of the documentary 'Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule', and it describes 10 areas and issues that will be impacted by these agreements. Several experts voice their concerns and send an alarming message to Canadians that it is time to put an end to undemocratic trade deals that are developed with input from only the largest corporations.

Hard evidence of police provoking violence at Montebello

A just-discovered new bombshell in video shot by Nanaimo filmmaker Paul Manly shows one of three Surete du Quebec policed officers disguised as radicals first hitting a member of the Surete du Quebec (SQ) riot squad in the face mask and then hitting the shield of another member of the SQ riot squad with the rock in his hand. This is a direct violation of section 63 of the criminal code of Canada and an attack on the Constitutionally guaranteed rights of freedom of assembly and security of the person. The video posted on Youtube can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCRsj06wT64

When Manly hit the national news with his exposé of the Surete du Quebec (Quebec Provincial Police) trying to incite a riot on August 20th at the SPP protest in Montebello, Quebec, his film project became secondary to his exposure of police misconduct. But Manly sees a direct relationship between the incident and the topic of the documentary he is working on: Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule.

Manly says, “Despite the sweeping changes it is making to the fabric of our country, almost nobody in Canada knows what the SPP (Security and Prosperity Partnership) is. Why is no one asking what was so important that thousands of demonstrators were in the streets of Montebello? Why is no one asking why the SQ brought out the riot police and the demonstrators had to police the police?”

“It appears that the strategy of the federal government to evade public debate while bringing Canada into one economic and political unit from Hudson’s Bay to the Gulf of Honduras is working.”

Supported by the Mid Island-Nanaimo chapter of the Council of Canadians, Manly is calling for a public inquiry into the incidents at Montebello. Quoting Section 63 of the Criminal Code of Canada against unlawful assembly, (1. An unlawful assembly is an assembly of three or more persons who, with intent to carry out any common purpose, assemble in such a manner or so conduct themselves when they are assembled as to cause persons in the neighbourhood of the assembly to fear, on reasonable grounds, that they (a) will disturb the peace tumultuously; or (b) will by that assembly needlessly and without reasonable cause provoke other persons to disturb the peace tumultuously) Manly asserts that the SQ must be brought to account for the events of August 20th, 2007, “This covert action undermines public confidence in the police and the three essential requirements of any democratic system: responsible government, the rule of law and freedom of legitimate political dissent.”

They also demand accountability from Stockwell Day, Federal Minister for Public Safety, whose responsibilities include law enforcement and police policy. Day defended the SQ assertion that the officer caught in an act of incitement was “given the rock by radicals – and was trying to fit in”.

“In the light of video, Day’s statement is patently false. That heavily-guarded protest site was thoroughly covered by surveillance cameras. The videotapes from all these cameras must be released for scrutiny by a public inquiry to determine, among other things, whether Mr. Day, an elected public official with considerable authority, has broken his oath by delivering false information.”

Manly has also uploaded a short documentary about the SPP and TILMA called ‘Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule – part 1 – Ten Reasons to Oppose the SPP and TILMA’. “I was shocked at what I was learning while producing this documentary so decided that I should create a short video to help educate the public immediately before it’s too late. This information is too important to sit on while I work on finishing the full length film.”

Democracy threat countered by Youtube and indie media - union leader Dave Coles; Agents provocateurs only the tip of Montebello

Posted: August 27, 2007
Section:

HarperIndex.ca, August 27, 2007, HALIFAX, NS -- Yesterday, HarperIndex.ca interviewed Dave Coles, the union leader at the centre of the Montebello agents provocateurs story, by phone from the Halifax airport. Coles is President of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers of Canada. He has been active in union organizing since 1967, and got his start with the local representing pulp mill workers in Crofton, British Columbia. We present excerpts of the interview:

HarperIndex.ca: A week later, how do you feel about Montebello?

Dave Coles: I feel disappointed and disgusted. I've been around people being infiltrated all my life in the labour movement. It never stops. These people will resort to every dirty trick in the world.

It's not uncommon in the progressive movements for either the corporate cops or the state police to do this kind of thing. They have used these types of tactics for 100 years, from the Pinkertons to the RCMP.

HI: What's new here?

Dave Coles: What's new here is they tried to agitate or cause trouble with demonstrators who clearly were no threat to anyone. We were dressed in suits and jackets and dresses and sandals, no masks to be seen. We were holding a police line back and held it back for hours.

The police were trying to move on six young protesters who had stopped their line and were sitting in the road, but they didn't have masks on. We had backed away from main gates of Montebello when the police forces got pretty rough with us. A couple of times during the day, some of the direct action kids came to our line trying to get us to do something provocative, and I talked them down.

An hour or so earlier, we were being taunted by the police. They stole from one of my staff a flagpole with a CEP flag and ran through the graveyard taunting us with it.

We have a very critical story to tell, our union, and Harper and his crew don't want it out

HI: Was this done by plainclothesmen?

Dave Coles: No, it was the cops, the Darth Vader crew. This is why I maintain that somewhere up the political ladder someone is giving instructions to not let us tell our story. We have a very critical story to tell, our union, and Harper and his crew don't want it out.

That's why we were in Montebello. It's all about Canada's energy security. The SPP has nine working groups on energy, all corporate executives and bureaucrats. There's nobody there from civil society or politicians. The Harper government is bowing to every American wish possible at the cost of energy security for Canada.

There is no pipeline from the Alberta tar sands to refineries in eastern Canada. All production, to get to eastern Canada, must go through the United States of America. Ninety nine percent of all Canadians, including most politicians, don't understand that.

The Harper government has been pushing through the FTA [Free Trade Agreement] to speed up pipeline expansion proposals to export bitumen [unprocessed oil sands]. There are pipeline applications to export 5 million barrels a day of this stuff by 2015. We have applications saying this ain't right. The stuff should be processed in Canada so we get the economic value from it, and the jobs, and society gets to determine the overall value we will get from it. Harper and his gang want it sold and shipped directly to the States. Canada, and especially Alberta, get the pollution, and the U.S. gets the jobs.

When Canadian raw crude oil has to go through the U.S. before it can get to any eastern refineries, including the big Irving refinery in St. John, New Brunswick, don't we have the right to ask what about Canada's energy security?

The same applies for electricity. There's no east-west grid, it's all north-south. Ontario is landlocked from Manitoba. All we want to do is make sure these questions get asked so Canadians see how these questions are dealt with. The SPP should be dealt with in the House of Commons. Politicians should be the ones dealing with it, not the corporate elite.

That's why I believe there's corporate interference in our movement. Provocateurs are sent in. The mainstream media won't cover us. What they want to cover is rocks and tear gas. Some mainstream media belittled me in the beginning. I think it's a disrespect to democracy and a threat to democracy.

HI: What was it like on the ground in Montebello?

Dave Coles: There really was hardly any trouble in relative terms to many actions I've been around and seen in the past. This was a church picnic. They had to stir it up. If the real reason the Council of Canadians and we were there were understood, the public would be up in arms about the SPP. It's treated as trivial, they call us the left wing loons, they keep giving us the back of the hand, only this time they got caught.

HI: Who took the video and posted it?

Dave Coles: A young chap from Nanaimo hired by the Council of Canadians, as well as a bunch of citizens taking still photos. I knew in my heart, after I looked these guys in the eye and they shoved me around, that they were cops. I'm a union leader. I've been on picket lines all my life. These guys looked like, acted like and smelled liked cops.

I find it really insulting they say they were carrying rocks to blend in. This guy assaulted me, he shoved me, he fingererd me. They were marching on a line that didn't have a mask. There's no mistake what they were doing or what we were doing.

HI: What are your next steps? Do you intend to press charges

Dave Coles: We have legal counsel working all weekend on this. We are going to file complaints, when it's to our advantage to expose this assault on democracy.

There are a number of issues that concern us. The reporting of the media and how they refuse to take our issues seriously. There's the issue of the infiltration by the police of a democratic process. There's entrapment, personal assault against me and my staff, the whole issue of political direction. Which politician made that determination they should infiltrate us?

HI: What made the story take off?

Technology is a marvelous thing. We had the Youtube and digital pictures, and more picture coming. We had two or three pretty clear shots of their faces. The cops knew we were going to Facebook them. The media had been talking to me. Sooner or later, somebody in Quebec was going to say "That's my neighbour." There was no way. Facebook, all the blogs. They got caught. Without a democratic free press, there is no democracy. Right now indie media is what's saving our butt in the democracy. Very few Canadians understand the importance of it. The Web is going to be the foundation of democracy for a while.

HI: Do you feel you successfully undermined Stephen Harper's agenda as a result of last week's events?

Dave Coles: Harper, he's just a mouthpiece for corporate capital. Think of the power of the oil companies. Their role in Iraq, the SPP...

A number of media insiders have told me that if they really wanted to have a meeting that didn't have a confrontation, why wouldn't they fly into Camp David or some other armed fortress and leave? They set it up so they could send their goons in. Why would the police steal our flag and taunt us with it, running through graveyard. We didn't get any pictures, but lots of witnesses saw it happen.

HI: What makes you think it's coming from the Prime Minister's office?

Dave Coles: Past practice, and also history. The guy doesn't like us to start with. I want to know if it's Stockwell Day or the Prime Minister himself who's behind it.

HI: We'll never know

Dave Coles: We intend to find out.

Daniel Casey on the media coverage

of the

Montebello summit and demonstrations!!!

PUBLIC TRUST ABHORS A VACUUM
by Daniel Casey
August 20, 2007

The media’s coverage of the secretive Montebello summit calls to mind an Irish cop in an old movie: After having insisted that there’s nothing to see here, they now start telling us to move along. CTV News, the Globe, the Star, the Post, La Presse and the Citizen all go inside with their patient explanations of why a framework for tighter continental integration is good for us even if we don’t know what’s in it. Only La Presse and the Citizen put even the briefest of mentions of the summit or the protests on their front pages, a tiny box with a generic photo of demonstrators in each. Demonstrators on Parliament Hill—one to two thousand of them, according to the Post, a flat two thousand in the Star, and a mere “several hundred” in the Globe’s estimate—gathered to oppose the talks, which were never formally approved by any of the three national legislatures, and to oppose the exclusion of any outside representatives other than a hand-picked committee of chief executives.

The Citizen pulls off a trifecta of dismissal: a story about how boring the talks are, how so little of any consequence will be discussed there, accompanied by an interview with Canadian Chamber of Commerce head Perrin Beatty smugly opining that “protesters believe in a zero-sum game” in defiance of the iron-clad law of comparative advantage, and followed by a dry account of the protest itself. To cap it all off, there’s a piece from US ambassador David Wilkins on the editorial page, advising us to leave our leaders to their folksy tête-á-têtes, because “that’s what diplomacy is all about.” A conservative estimate would put the ratio of opinion to news content addressing the summit in today’s Citizen at five to one, which oversells the point to the extent that the paper loses credibility. When put together, Harper’s penchant for secrecy, the security bubble around a widely unpopular US president, and the divided Mexican electorate that voted in Felipe Calderon in a questionable poll last year, are all combining with the visible unpopularity of the continental-integration agenda to create a vacuum of information about the “Security and Prosperity Partnership.” When Harper came into power and changed press briefing rules, the media were up in arms for weeks. Now they see a vacuum about a much more consequential policy issue and fill it with reassurance; were it that the media was as concerned with our collective access to information as they are with their own.

Comment: These liar$ (overt and covert) in the press are going to be right sorry about their actions surrounding this in days to come.

This is going to prove to be the most riveting chapter in the fight for Canadian democracy yet!! You can mark my wordz on this.

There has been a very tenuous thread holding the social contract together in Kanada for a very long time. NO ONE I know trusts any politician.

No one I know here LIKES increasingly globalization; no one I know very well would ever shop at Walmart!! even if it's become the (high priced and nutritionally valueless) grocery store in their neighborhood. Staying away from transantional entities are a regular POLITICAL pasttime here - even if going to vote is not. So far that is.

And few I know want Canada increasingly militarized for any reason at all. Thus far the Canadian media is only REALLY talking about this "antiwar, anti-Afghanistan" sentiment in relation to the SPP protests; there is FAR more going forward than THAT.

My prediction is that with the NDP and the Greens (the latter being the only political entity saw getting TV coverage over the weekend) on side, we are going to come to a national referendum on the SPP/ North American 'issue" befor this is all over and people are going to V O T E against it in the biggest numbers ever shown at the polls.

People like me are going to bang away and bang away at what is at stake here; the press be DAMNED. I think we may see, finally, the start of some viable alternative media; I could not get press credentials for the event . this says something as hundreds of people read me on this topic.

For every reactionary (and it is) step taken by the media the reaction to social control will rachet up ever further.

We are going from deafening silence to Alfred E. Newman "what me, worry?" on the part of the mainstream media, that is ALL. They had better start paying attention themselves before total censorship sets in as it did every time a war or "national emergency" sets in, as people are going to only read a handful of journalists at that junction.

Over the weekend, I was shocked to find that I could only use the Globe&Mail of ALL Canadian information sources for reference to the financial meltdown situation. Not relevant to make that comment? you think. No, that IS the point - only there can one from information on finance and business in Canada TODAY to figure out what is going on. This is a travesty .. and the information THEY gave out on the SPP so bad, I wrote them a letter which of course never got published.

The item in The Star appeared on Page 19, no commentary whatsoever in the editorial pages. CTV made sure any protester quoted (with the exception of the head of the Greens) mad no sense to the viewer - the signs and banners selected for viewers CAREFULLY censored to mislead and misrepresent. (unfortunately there were any number of them to choose from) The Globe and Mail and the Sun have been taunting dissents for nearly two weeks now. Writing editors and TV stations can be a full time job.

I took a gander over to Garth Turner's site hoping to find some commentary. While the posters THERE are very knowledgable in the main and there is some very good discussion, the SPP is being IGNORED. His site is, afterall, the site for those concerned with middle income Canadians flocks; one would expect more. The North American Union (camoflagued for the time being as the SPP) is of strategic interest to them as they plan for their futures ...

As a general observation, I think the MSM (mainstream media) is going to make the battle over the NAU, and the SPP, more difficult, but their very silence and contortions are only going to make people more radicalized rather than less in the days ahead.

And the politicians who cover up are in more trouble than ever, too.

Time for a clean sweep!! of the lot of corporate apologizers.

*** CAMPAIGN TO SCRAP THE SECURITY AND PROSPERITY PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT!

The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) was founded
in March 2005 at a summit of the Heads of State of Canada, the US, and
Mexico. SPP is not an official treaty; it is not an official law;
therefore it has been able to escape any public scrutiny. The major drive
behind the SPP is a CEO-based organization, which is the only official
advisory group to governments on the SPP.

The SPP is a NAFTA-plus-Homeland-Security model and will involve the
harmonization of over 300 areas of regulations, including: integration of
the military and police, expansion of temporary worker programs as a means
of ensuring low wages, coordination of no-fly lists, expedited resource
extraction particularly oil and water on unceded indigenous territories,
and harmonization of health and environmental regulations to lower
standards and development of a North American alternative to the Kyoto
Protocol.

We believe that the SPP is a continuation of ongoing capitalist and
colonial policies- including that of the Canadian government’s- and will
bring greater insecurity and misery: murderous wars and occupations
abroad; border militarization; increased detentions and deportations;
attacks on indigenous peoples, the poor, migrants, and working people;
ecological destruction; and mega-projects in the service of corporate
greed.

Therefore we demand that the Security and Prosperity Partnership Agreement
be scrapped immediately!

WHO INVITED BUSH TO CANADA?

No one uses the “L” word up here in Canada .. liars.

We may make bad talk about our politicians being greedy and corrupt, but we are light years behind the US at labeling our government as crook$ and LIAR$ on that grand scale.

The spectre of the Security and Prosperity Agreement summit to come to Montebello, Quebec (1/2 way between Ottawa and Quebec City) may change all that. From a mass deception about what is going on, we may find Our Leader, Stephen Harper, a member of the Three Amigos, having to tell some pretty tall ones very soon as the summit is booked for 19-20 August.

Sometimes it is good to learn from our mistakes. Start with avoiding the alphabet soup proposed by the neocons and their academic apologists and business allies.

A classic example would be to learn from North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that some things do not work. However, this doesn’t seem to be part of the process going on today in Canada – and it isn’t going to benefit the citizens of the world, that is for sure.

It’s right hard to stay a GLOBALIST, that is care deeply about the entire planet, when digging into the backwaters of Ruling Class strategy without reverting to arguments pro the Constitution or in Canada’s case, pro Confederation. This must be done however IF we are to get a sane world.

Nationalism has proven, largely, to be a disaster as dispensed by “planners” at the CIA in the past few decades .. a major thrust of US policy has been to push for Arab nationalism, African nationalism, and any nationalism at all that would keep people divided, their people “conquered” and their resources ripe for picking. But any discussion on the Strategic Protection and Prosperity Agreement means we must take a real hard look before plunging into a quarmire Progressives might fall into. This complete disregard is based on one simple premise:

Security and Prosperity for WHO ....?

Whether this coup goes through in a neocon-generated business paradise for the rich becomes a new way of life or even if it falters, an understanding of North American integration is due right away.

Our problem begins with the duet sung by Reagan and Mulroney signing the NAFTA. Mulroney attempted to provide the motivation for signing by citing that protectionism and starvation would be waiting in the wings if Canada did not meekly agree to the US terms. Little bit players, entering the stage, suggested that Canadian pride and manhood (!) were on the line if Canada did not enter the glorious struggle in the global marketplace.

So the rich get richer, the poor remain poor, maybe poorer .. if a person could find three jobs (and many did) a middle class person could stay afloat.

Suddenly Canadian steel companies were sold .. Dofasco, Algoma Steel and Stelco (back in the news this week!) are no longer Canadian .. but not to worry.

Under NAFTA, the US has secured their oil industry by a GUARANTEED share of Canada’s oil resources. Canada becomes the major supplier to the US (gas guzzling) war machine. In 2007, 65% of Canadian oil and gas are now shipped to the US, but Canada has no reserves. Funny, the Mexicans don’t sign away their oil. Maybe they know something about the gringos we don’t.

The Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI) is put on the table, but due to the mass of non-ignorant FRENCH people and their government, this is avoided. My, my, the rich are finding out that perhaps they cannot find a good way to protect the “international” investors.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) was exposed in Seattle when a mass protest of citizens, many of them union members, filled the streets .. the WTO meeting was shut down and future meetings were held FAR from the very angry MAD crowds. The

Free Trade of the Americas (FTAA) was given a death blow by the massive protest and police brutality in Quebec City.

----- PAGE BREAK -----

A long time ago -- back in April -- the Bilderbergers had a little confab in Turkey. The items of interest were Canada and Turkey. The Canadian Prime Minister is cleverly NOT going to these parties as he knows that progressives and radicals and his other political opponents are watching him. Last year, the meeting was held outside Ottawa and even the mainstream media reported it because Canadian security forces slipped up and arrested Alex Jones of 9/11 fame and held him captive (looking for porno they said) for 15 hours. This gave the media time to come and have a look at the heavy security the Canadian taxpayer was footing for the high and mighty hanging about the place.

Since then we've been perusing papers and ‘net sites to guess what they confabbed about THIS spring. The US fleet is now in the Gulf. Turkish troops massing around the Kurds. Turkey’s playing hanky-pankying with Russia. These things get reported.

But eh? How is it Canada has been slipped in among these world hot spots?

This couldn’t be more alarming. We’re supposed to be in an economic boom! All hunky AND dory! Harper and the RCMP graft (our major source of intelligence gathering) notwithstanding, every little thing is ship shape (even with the coming "investment" in six icebreakers capable of cutting through one metre of ice). Russia has declared parts of the Arctic (read: Arctic oil) as THEIRS, but there’s no way to protect it without the assistance of the US’ Northern Commnand …

The media honeymoon with Harper has been fey from Day One. It’s plain that Harper used his western Canada oil money backers to buy a political position that no one envies. Who’d want to be PM of Canada today? Strategically, logistically, and politically we’re in an international hot seat.

Does Canada have a plan for its future? Is it even likely to get one?

Nope. Years of graft, corruption and lethargy have left the Liberal Party inert to deal with the future now upon us. The Conservatives couldn’t pull together under Preston Manning. The complacency got so rusty and cruddy, the Liberals got the boot only after the Gomery report on corruption.

We Progressives prayed Harper’s days be shortened to a few months. God proved unbountiful here, though Harper had booted the press sufficient to be targetted and skewed daily in the press for all to see.

Worse, there is no one in place to assume leadership. We do have a damned fine opposition, but insufficient numbers for a coalition government. Instead the NDP (New Democratic Party) gets hauled out in a crisis to do deal making; then we get just a dab of progressive legislation and budgetary discretion to let off some political, budgetary steam that should have been released years ago. It’s the Canadian way to not get too riled about things ….

Harper has successfully dodged calls for a new election. To the progressive way of thinking this is surprising. Our press is practiced at investigative journalism; the press corps aren’t prudes when it comes to exercising a bit of rumpy pumpy in the editorial and analysis pages. Why, we even have GOOD military and political commentators on privately held TV stations, who are just plain folks like us wanting social spending that no one is seeing. Why are all now being so kind about the boiling cauldron Canadian Government is preparing to toss us into? I think the trees have blinded them to the forest and they can't see the inner ecology of things as they are now, although cries for a reduction in warmaking troops falls on deaf ears.

Canada's true problems stem from complicated relations with the crank “New American Empire” with Prince George Bush and Cardinal Dick careening intoxicated at North America’s steering wheel these seven years. Inherited headaches from bastard parentage of the BritishEmpire, to boot, don’t help. We have a myriad of issues from this un(w)holy family system.

Unsettled land claims with First Nations peoples grow more difficult, day by day, to negotiate as aboriginals become increasingly unwilling to take money for land maculated with uranium runoffs and dirty water. Plus, the refusal by the goverment to ratify the UN agreements on aboriginal peoples is being attacked by the Liberals, who spent years themselves ignoring them ... providing them with an excuse to not ratify UN proposals.

There are the headaches about regional variations on taxation and transfer of tax payments to the Provinces. For years, rich Provinces were paying to support those less fortunate. This was bad enough, but now as the western Provinces pipeline precious resources into the US -- and they get provided to Israeli fighter jets -- people take to the streets. Why SHOULD Atlantic Canada be importing oil ..? Why are there no gas and oil reserves there? Harper's own party has been shouting at him and his paper-thin coalition of Conservative forces are at each other and him.

It's a paper thin coalition because it only exists on paper . these guys have never worked together before, it's all ink, no controlling the back benchers who are only too willing to get up and walk out and try to start their own little power ploys against the West all over again. Being a Conservative backbencher is the most thankless job in Canada and totally frustrating. They are expected to be a chorus line to Harper's stoic dance which no one fancies.

Then there is the headache of being mired in Afghanistan. This is not a popular conflict. And most importantly, we like to think of our troops as . gasp! .. peacekeepers, not pawns in a bloody US imperialist game to gain more oil resources in the Middle East.

Unlike the US there is a definitive military family tradition in Canada, handed down generation after generation. There is at rock bottom a true loyalty to Canadian troops. But the images of the body bags are displayed on television here; nothing is covered up. The report that the US had killed Canadian soldiers is something one never forgets. We know, too, that the US pilots were on speed when they did it, too. So every death is weighed carefully and they register with "the masses". When the vote was up for extending the commitment to the conflict, I think many people were surprised.

Certainly they government and war profiteers weren't gonna to get carte blanche; it is apparent, again, to even the inexperienced eye that Iraq is a dismal and utter failure. The high cost of today's genocidal wars will not be allowed here ... this past week even the TV commentors are having a feast on Harper’s apparent misunderstanding of what the Canadian people will allow. They do not want their tax dollars being spent on military equipment or troops in some international hotspot; they want dollars for social programs. The last budget saw $8 billion dollars paying off the debt, while thousands go without doctors. Big mistake, Mr. Harper. Our cities go down the drain. Big mistake, Mr. Harper. Our tuition to schools of higher learning go way up. Big mistake, Mr. Harper …

No one is trusting Harper these days .. his recent visit to South America to do Bush’s dirty work blew up in his face as he rationalized doing business with known human rights abusers. It just didn’t work. Meanwhile, on Canadian soil, a US military presence has been detected, just prior to the SPP summit …. Who invited THEM in ..?

What to do?

The Stop the SPP committee is probably the oddest coalition of groups EVER assembled in Canadian history. Unions, climate activists, the respectable Council of Canadians, rightwingers, a new national party (the Canadian Action Party) opposed to the SPP/NAU, anticapitalists, the usual anarchists, refugee organizations and groups who say no one is illegal, and the list is broadening daily.

Headlines proclaim that no one KNOWS about the SPP; this is not the case, fighting back against it – a big business, government alliance – is not the uphill fight it is made out to be. Getting a coalition to work together is another story. We are doing what Parliament cannot do -- work together.

Although things might have started peacefully enough with activist progressive holding a quiet soiree at a public hall in Papineuville, Quebec the day before, the government, aided and assisted by the US Army has set a 25-km security perimeter around Montebello.

This prevented even the staid from discussing the SPP and caused headlines. The hall was made unavailable. Scholars and concerned citizens were prevented from speaking – but the realization that the US Army, in league with the RCMP and the Quebec local police, was calling the shots got people’s dander up. Vehicles with over five people in them are banned from the area. But the rich, the corporations will be inside the perimeter conducting business as usual.

The numbers who are bussing into Ottawa grows daily. New plans for bike caravans, river launches and canoes up the Ottawa River are proposed. The US government has Harper closing down the river for the duration. No less than 40 other supportive demonstrations around Canada are planned. This has a momentum that can only be understood by reading THIS:

The threat to public discourse and free speech will not be tolerated in Canada.

Crucial issues at the heart of this "partnership": the accelerated extraction and delivery of Canadian oil and water resources to the US economy; a deepening of economic partnership with the US conditional to a war-driven foreign policy; the pretext of "national security" to justify the secrecy surrounding the precise nature of the discussions and the deals made.

Guaranteeing and increasing the profits of the largest corporations In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, George W. Bush declared "[E]ither you are with us, or you are with the terrorists". That year, the only directive given to Paul Celluci, as he became US Ambassador to Canada, was to do whatever he could to bring about a major increase in Canadian military spending. And Harper has now made a huge commitment to this.

Harper is not loved in the Canadian press; he has made it so by playing martinette .. making himself PRIME Minister to the demise of his own cabinet. He is not loved, nor charming. His ties to business become clearer day by day.

There is a menacing tone to all this: unless Canada adopted the same "security" agenda as the US, our trade relations would suffer. Thus security trumps trade. Canada is falling quickly into the trumps game in which Bush and Cheney have been the masters …

In August two unelected Presidents and a minority Prime Minister meet in Quebec (we think, maybe not? maybe Ottawa? the people are being "toyed with") with their royal cortege of business princelings, attended by high level bureaucrats who have decided to remain mute will hold court in Quebec.

Who invited THEM …? They are about to find out we do not want them HERE.

Letters are being written, the media at all locales contacted, plans are laid.

Phone calls made nonstop; people are learning to work together.

Stay tuned as the US attempts to highjack and annex Canada ...
