Evidence That Stun Guns May Stimulate The Heart

Evidence That Stun Guns May Stimulate The Heart

Science Daily
Posted: 2008-05-02 17:52:03

On the eve of the British Columbia inquiry into the death of Robert Dziekanski, a review of scientific data in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) finds that in some cases, stun guns may stimulate the heart in experimental models. This evidence is contrary to current views that stun guns only affect skeletal muscles.

"The frequency and the shape of the pulses generated by stun guns are designed to incapacitate the target by electrically overwhelming his or her control of these muscles," state Dr. K. Nanthakumar and colleagues. "In principle, these pulses are designed to act only on skeletal muscles and to not affect internal organs such as the heart." The evidence that stun guns do not stimulate the heart is based on "...theoretical studies [that] suggest that stun guns cannot deliver the amount of energy required to stimulate the heart or cause ventricular fibrillation."

Dr. Nanthakumar and collegues point out that most theoretical and some experimental studies reveal that cardiac stimulation does not occur with stun gun discharges. However, experimental studies on pigs by 3 independent groups of investigators found that "a stun gun discharge can stimulate the heart" depending on the location of the stun gun barbs. Barbs that are located such that they form a vector across the heart have greater effect than those focused on the abdomen. In one study, swine blood pressure was abruptly lost after discharge of a stun gun, and another study "reported the deaths of 2 animals caused by ventricular fibrillation immediately after the stun gun discharge....This suggests that sufficient current density was produced by the stun gun to stimulate the heart, which according to theory should not and could not occur."

The researchers caution against applying data from pigs to humans, although "most of the basic mechanistic concepts in cardiac fibrillation and defibrillation are derived from animal studies, not humans."

Recently, there have been several deaths after the use of stun guns, including Robert Dziekanski in Richmond, British Columbia, a Montréal, Quebec man and 24 year-old Chicago, Illionois resident, Kevin Piskura. More than 300 deaths following stun gun use have been documented, 20 of them in Canada.

Regarding arrhythmias long after the discharge of the stun gun, Dr. Nanthakumar, Dr. Paul Dorian and colleagues conclude "...there is no conclusive evidence to show whether stun gun stimulation (under certain electrophysical conditions) can result in cardiac arrhythmias late after stun gun discharge. With regards to deleterious effects on the heart during the discharge they state "In our view, it is inappropriate to conclude that stun gun discharges cannot lead to adverse cardiac consequences in all real world settings."

NOTES
My Life Is My Sun DancePrison Writings of LEONARD PELTIER

Silence, they say, is the voice of complicity.
But silence is impossible.
Silence screams.
Silence is a message,
Just as doing nothing is an act.

Let who you are ring out and resonate
in every word and every deed.
Yes, become who you are.
There's no sidestepping your own being
or your own responsibility
.What you do is who you are.
You are your own comeuppance.
You become your own message.
You are the message.

May the Great Spirit Make Sunrise in Your Heart . . .

Hoka Hey!

Leonard PeltierA Bio of Harvey Arden
Author/Editor of:Wisdomkeepers: Meetings with Native American Spiritual Elders
Dreamkeepers: A Spirit-Journey into Aboriginal Australia
Noble Red Man: Lakota Wisdomkeeper Mathew King
Travels in a Stone Canoe: The Return to the Wisdomkeepers
Prison Writings: My Life is My Sun Dance by Leonard Peltier
Have You Thought of Leonard Peltier Lately?
White Buffalo Teachings by Arvol Looking Horse

Over the past few years I have given readings/lectures on the Dreamkeepers and the Wisdomkeepers at Harvard, Columbia, CalTech, USC, the University of South Dakota (Vermillion), Briarcliffe College (Sioux City, IA), etc etc etc

I've given readings from Leonard Peltier s PRISON WRITINGS: MY LIFE IS MY SUN DANCE and Mathew King s book NOBLE RED MAN to audiences in schools, churches, museums, private homes, coffee shops, public auditoriums and theaters in New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston, New Orleans, Washington DC, Cape Cod, Western Massachusetts, New Hampshire etc.and scores of smaller towns. I've also given scores of readings at Borders and Barnes & Noble (and many, many other) bookstores across the country; I've been interviewed on NPR (national "Public Interest" show, twice), also on many many other radio stations. I was for 23 years a staff writer at National Geographic Magazine.

A play of mine on Leonard Peltier, already performed at USD, is in the early stages of a professional production. My books have been translated into French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, and Japanese..with Greek and Swedish in the works.

Anyway, I'm willing to put my old body on the line anytime it's needed for the Cause, but I can often be of more of use here at my basement-study PC, since I plug into lots of places in the Indian and international indigenous worlds, though I'm a white guy myself. Lot's of people know me and, hopefully, trust me. You can check me out ad nauseum with a Google search on my name. (someone told me a few weeks or so ago she found 22,000 entries on me with a few simple searches)

I still spend lots of time working for and with Leonard Peltier. I ve visited Leonard half a dozen times at Leavenworth. Also I have a few novels, plays, screenplays and other nonfiction books that I'm trying to give birth to lest they be, alas, stillborn. Like Mat King used to say, "You're not too bad for a white guy, Harvey. You're lucky. Tunkashila has a job for you to do and you're going to do it!" Regarding why I, a white guy, am so involved in the indigenous world, I subscribe to the philosophy expressed in this statement by Australian Aboriginal Elder Lilla Watson: "If you've come here to help me, you're wasting your time. But if you've come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together."

Reviewer: Geri TimmonsAbsolutely loved the CD and the way it brings Leonard's words to life. I intend to send the CD to our irish republican political prisoner's in Ireland. We are not in this struggle alone. Ta an la ag teact (our day is coming)

The Ripples are Reaching Out!Reviewer: RishaI sat and listened to this in my room, a few candles flickering in the darkness and I could FEEL the pain, the loneliness and the emptiness of Mr Peltier as his powerful words reached into my mind and painted many disturbing and despairing images, they reached in and touched my heart and I felt so sad, yet I could also feel such strength and dignity. That amazed me. I don't think there are many people who would be able to stay as strong and not lose their dignity under such a disgusting and disgaceful injustice forced upon them! I am here in England and like a pebble dropped in the water the ripples are reaching out to other lands and other people who also fight in their own way for Mr Peltier... and the injustices of the American Indian Peoples.

heart rendingReviewer: Peg ShrinerHaving read the book and other writings about Mr. Peltier including "In The Spirit Of Crazy Horse" by Peter Mathiasson. Very Impressive Work

Reviewer: Little Eagle - Earth Citizenhsip NetworkVery impressive work. It will take the listener to a place where most of us will never be but all of us are all familiar with. The place is Leavenworth, Kansas the residence of a Native American and Earth Citizen political prisoner by the name of Leonard Peltier. The spoken words you will hear is from Leonard's personal story and it will ring to your heart, go ahead and buy it. In fact, buy one for a friend and send another to a politician. Free Leonard Peltier!
Sure I felt compassion, I felt anger again for the FBI

Reviewer: Llye K'angSure, I felt compassion but at the same time, I felt anger again for the FBI, there arrogance and unbelievable ignorant ways. "If I can get away with it-why not", kind of attitude. You know what I mean...

Being ThereReviewer: barbaraI can feel myself in that cell with Leonard listening to this CD....
Demand Freedom for Leonard NOW!

Reviewer: John at CD BabyThe powerful words of Leonard Peltier are not to be ignored. This one man has done more to promote Human Rights while unjustly held within prison walls than most of us can ever hope to do outside of them. This CD is a compelling reading of Leonards own words, read by the man (Harvey Arden) who helped him get those words out to the world. A must have for anyone who cares for the future of the generations yet to come and the realities of a man currently being denied freedom due to a gross miscarriage of justice.

Cheney home after heart treatment

Olivier Knox, Agence France-Presse
Published: Wednesday, October 15, 2008

WASHINGTON - U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney on Wednesday underwent successful treatment for an irregular heartbeat that led him to cancel appearances at the White House and a political rally, his office said.

Cheney, who had his first heart attack at 37 and his fourth in 2000, returned home after a nearly two-hour hospital stay and was expected to be back at work as scheduled on Thursday, said spokeswoman Megan Mitchell.

Doctors had diagnosed a recurrence of atrial fibrillation, an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart, and recommended he undergo treatment for the second time in under a year."An electrical impulse was delivered to restore the heart to normal rhythm. The procedure went smoothly and without complication," Mitchell said in a statement. "The vice president is home and resumed his normal schedule."

The health issue forced Cheney, 67, to cancel a planned appearance at a campaign event in Illinois and instead telephone the reception to express his support, the spokeswoman said.

Cheney also missed a meeting of U.S. President George W. Bush's cabinet - the name card usually by his seat as well as a glass of water could be seen on a small side table - on the global financial meltdown.

Bush, who later traveled to Michigan for a political fundraiser, told reporters hours before the procedure that "the vice president is doing fine," and that Cheney had told him of his condition during their morning briefings.

"He came in and told me he was going to head back into the hospital to have his, you know, his heart checked, worked on," said Bush. "And he was confident, his doctors are confident, and therefore I'm confident."

Cheney, one of the most powerful and controversial vice presidents in US history, underwent an angioplasty weeks after taking the oath of office in January 2001 and had a pacemaker implanted that same year.

In September 2005 Cheney had an operation for blood clots behind each of his knees, and in January 2006 he was hospitalized for shortness of breath.

In November 2007, Cheney underwent treatment for the same irregular heartbeat, which required an electrical impulse to restore the upper chambers of the heart to normal rhythm.

And the vice president went on a course of blood thinners after doctors discovered a blood clot behind his left knee following a nine-day trip to Asia in March 2007.

Just a Moment from my Heart to your Heart

A greeting in the Cook Islands from the local people "Kia Orana" meaning 'may you live on", is most appropriate as I researched "coconut" at the request from an ebuddy in Canada. Virginia had requested some information on coconut with a particular view into the spiritual aspect. For those readers not familiar with the medicinal properties I have included them in this post as well. Thanks to the Internet and a travel website, I found a photo of a coconut tree in the Cook Islands - (I added the two figures of the dancers, to create the graphic.) The Cook Islands are about half way between Hawaii and New Zealand. Their language is Maori with all business conducted in English. It is estimated that the people of the Cook Islands arrived there in about 800AD from Polynesia. The Cook Islands are part of the Commonwealth of Nations (previously the British Commonwealth) and will be presenting a team of athletes at the Commonwealth Games being held in Melbourne, Australia in March 2006. The Commonwealth games baton stayed for 7 days in the Cook Islands in early January on it's travel through all competing nations.

Throughout the Tropical regions Coconut trees grow abundantly and easily. It takes about 20 years for a coconut palm to reach full nut bearing maturity. They provide shade, food, clothing and for many years the material for shelter from rain, wind and storms. The scientific name is Cocos Nucifera - Cocos meaning "monkey" and nucifera meaning "nut bearing". The cocos derives from the three indentations on the hairy nut giving the appearance of a monkey-like face. In India, these same three indentations take on a spiritual meaning as they are likened to the eyes of the Shiva. In religious ceremonies the coconut is the symbol of selfless service. Coconut is considered a Divine plant in Vedic tradition. More than any other plant coconut speaks to us with the vibration of living in the moment, being prepared to take risks. It strips away our defences, boosting vitality and gaining protection in all areas of life. It shows the way in understanding how unique we are, allowing us to be steadfast and persevering through all the storms as well as enjoying the glories of sunny days and starry nights.
I share with you these thoughts to assist the vibrational energy of the essence

Coconut - To Boost Vitality

We come to you with information of your own Uniqueness.
We bring a message of Divine Love, allowing for the solution through our vibration,
to bring balance within all energy systems.
Our vibration manifests within your conscious and sub-conscious mind,
thoughts of selflessness in obtaining the protection from negativity
which is your birthright.
Through your physical body we reach for a solution to those issues which remain unresolved.
We strip away all defences held against the control you place upon yourself,
stopping growth.
Through the genetic decoding of your DNA we remove those obstacles which caused
doubt and fear to create a feeling of unworthiness within you.
We bring you the spark of life which was always yours from the beginning.
It has been the seed, dormant within you
waiting for the recognition of self love,
gifted between soul and the physical pathway you now travel.
It is time to understand that you have passed the test of endurance,
through perseverance of always walking forward.
You have a stability of knowledge gained through experiential wisdom of soul.
Use this knowledge now
as you emerge with a strong commitment
to the Blueprint you designed before incarnation.
It is time to become The Master, bringing to fulfilment Life's Plan.

Coconut oil is an edible oil that has been consumed in tropical places for thousands of years. Studies done on native diets high in coconut consumption show that these populations are generally in good health, and don't suffer as much from many of the modern diseases of western nations.
http://www.coconutdiet.com/%20coconut_oil.htm

The soothing and antimicrobial properties of coconut oil justify its widespread use in medicinal preparations.

Coconut oil

The oil is also used on a day to day basis in many household products such as soaps, cosmetics and shampoos. This is because the fatty acids in coconut oil make good creams and detergents. Coconut oil contains fatty acids which are antimicrobial and a compound called sucrose cocoate, which is moisturising. The oil is used in skin soothing treatments to ease inflammation such as eczema and psoriasis. Sucrose cocoate is also added to some pharmaceutical preparations because it can help the body to absorb certain drugs.
Coconut water
Coconut water, a popular drink from the mature fruits, is nutritious and contains sugars, vitamin E, amino acids and minerals. It is also an antioxidant.

Safety

Coconuts are not harmful to the health, but regular consumption of large amounts of coconut oil may not be advisable because it contains saturated fat, which is associated with heart disease. Coconut soap may cause irritation to the skin of people sensitive to it.
This information is provided for general interest only. It is not intended as guidance for medicinal use.

Coconut - traditional medicine

Multipurpose plants in the true sense, coconut palms have been used to treat an extraordinary range of health problems. The seeds, roots and even flowers have been prepared into pastes, infusions and creams for Ayurvedic and other traditional South Asian medicines.

Coconut remedies

White meat and water from the cavity are used for heart conditions, dysentery, fever, pain, digestive and bladder problems, to quench thirst and as an aphrodisiac. To treat diarrhoea, meat from young fruits is mixed with other ingredients and rubbed onto the stomach. Oil prepared from boiling coconut milk is thought of as antiseptic and soothing and so is smoothed onto the skin to treat burns, ringworm and itching. These two properties are also valued in Western medicine. It has been applied to the scalp in the belief that it might encourage hair growth and prevent grey hair.

Other parts of the palm

Other parts of the palm are also used in traditional South Asian medicine. Juice tapped from flowers stalks is given to cure fever and promote urination. Fresh juice mixed and heated together with rice flour is applied to gangrenous ulcers and skin boils, while fermented juice is taken as a laxative. The roots have been used for a host of ailments, including as an infusion for sore throat gargles. Coconut palm hearts are nourishing and are regarded as good for the digestion. To regulate menstruation, a paste made from grinding the hearts with molasses is eaten every day for several successive days. The fresh juices from the hearts are used against fevers. Coconuts also feature in traditional medicines in other parts of the world. In Indo-China, the seeds are used as a treatment for skin and nasal ulcers

one of its elements is lauric acid, a known anti bacterial and anti-fungal component. When mixed with monoglyceride becomes monolaurine, similar to fats in a mother's milk, which has the same nutriceutical effects. Once inside the body, the MCFA goes directly to the liver, from the liver comes out, and creates the energy needed by the body unlike the other oils that has long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) that circulate around the body, which then produces cholesterol. These LCFA are not good for the body because the body does not have enzymes to break it down, thus making it one of the main causes of heart ailments.

http://www.vrpmc.com.ph/medspeak.htm

Main constituents

Khopra (desiccated coconut) contains about 60 to 70% coconut oil. Coconut oil is composed, as might be inferred by its high melting point of over 32 °C, mostly of triglycerides of saturated fatty acids. Lauric (dodecanoic acid; 40 to 55%) and myristic acid (tetradecanoic acid; 15 to 20%) dominate, but several other fatty acids are found at concentrations of 5 to 10%: The two short-chain acids caprylic (octanoic) and capric (decanoic) acid (which are responsible for the smell of overaged coconut oil), the long-chain palmitic acid (hexadecanoic acid) and oleic acid, which is the only unsaturated fatty acid found at significant amounts. Consequently, the iodine index is very low (typically, below 10). See also sesame on the topic of plant oils.

The typical coconut flavour is caused by several -lactones of aliphatic hydroxy-carboxylic acids, ranging in chain length from 8 to 14; 5-decanolide (5-pentyloxan-2-one) is the most important single compound. Synthetic coconut flavourings often contain a homologous γ-lactone, 4-nonanolide (pentyloxolan-2-one), which is not found in coconuts.Toasting coconuts leads to pyrolysis of maltose and glucose, whereby new fragrant compounds are formed: maltol (2-hydroxy-3-methyl-γ-pyrone) and cyclotene (cyclopentenolone, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one), respectively. Furthermore, a great number of alkylpyrazines were identified (pyrazine, methyl pyrazin, dimethyl pyrazines, vinyl pyrazin, isopropyl pyrazin).

Launch of the LOVE Network

This is a special appeal to "catch the wave" of something BIG. A win/win for yourself and global civilization.

There is a dedicated band of global Netizens who have always supported the pure intent of GeoNotes to bring light to dark places, igniting the visionary fire that burns through big problems to big solutions for both personal and planetary evolution.

Now we're facing the greatest global crisis in modern history.

The real terrorists behind 9-11 and the Mid-East war are now exposed, cornered, and dangerous -- plotting an Iran attack that could trigger WWIII of Armageddon proportions. This is SERIOUS. Time for "do or die" for Light and LOVE.

The world is a cosmic struggle for the soul of mankind and that struggle is reaching a climax. The best defense against the real "axis of evil" is a good offense... without being offensive. It's time for a "Spring Offensive" -- Easter Resurrection -- in global r EVOLUTION terms. There is a way you can catch, build and ride this promising wave of global transformation. I appeal to your own higher conscience -- call it "enlightened self interest" -- to contribute to the long-planned launch of the LOVE Network.

Heaven knows that the divine destiny of Earth is genuine freedom. Enlightened Netizen patriots know the struggle is for the soul of mankind in our global village. Enlightened Netizens know that the virtue of sovereignty is the heart of true wealth that trumps the poverty consciousness of global terror/tyranny insanity.

Freedom is like health. Once people lose it, they'll pay just about any price to get it back - at least those who are healthy enough to love freedom. It's true that many have lost that love. Like an encroaching disease, many have adapted to lower levels of vitality and resistance to "war in the members" of their own body until they are too sick and tired to remember what optimal health or freedom is like. The whole earth and Family of Man is suffering that "dis-ease" right now -- a serious healing crisis.

Greater LOVE is the heart of both life and freedom. If we don't use it -- the freedom to network for the healing power of LOVE -- we may lose it-- the freedom to network and resurrect genuine freedom. This is it folks - your support is needed. It's your world I'm talking about. We're all connected in this - our instant-everywhere-interactive global village. A global rEVOLUTION in higher consciousness is needed and the means to do that are at hand - your hand. You can pray, you can network, you can "link the light" to our cause, and you can contribute to the new "chain-reaction" strategy for the LOVE Network at www.heartcom.org/contribute.htm.

The best hope for humanity is a bold thrust for worldwide healing with fearless faith in the global rule of law through the universal Law of LOVE. The common sense benefits are self-evident -- a global healing process becomes the gold standard interface for InnerNet interfaith. There are simply ways to contribute to the resurrection spiral needed. Engage your pure heart, your higher mind, and do what you can. Think through it -- how this definitive standard for holistic healing in the collective consciousness can raise mankind's conscience as kind men.

Realize how "heartware" (cyberethics) will provide E-valuation criteria for "whol-E" (holistic) networking and global wholEness. I need your help. My expenses are modest but the urgency now is great. If you can part with a few dollars, please support this GeoNotes Service and the LOVE Network.

On the China Diet, before wikipedia edits the entry!!

The China Study (ISBN 1-932100-38-5) is a 2005 book by T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional biochemist at Cornell University and director of the China Project, and his son, Thomas M. Campbell II.

The book examines the relationship between the consumption of animal products and illness such as cancers of the breast, prostate, and large bowel, diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity, autoimmune disease, osteoporosis, degenerative brain disease, and macular degeneration. The "China study" referred to in the title is the China Project, a "survey of death rates for twelve different kinds of cancer for more than 2,400 counties and 880 million (96%) of their citizens" conducted jointly by Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine over the course of twenty years.

The authors do not solely present the findings of a single study conducted in China. They also introduce a large number of previous but less-exhaustive scientific studies which have correlated animal-based diets with disease. The authors provide a historical context and show consistency between the China Study findings and peer-reviewed scientific studies with regards to the view that both animal fat and animal protein (such as casein in bovine milk) are strongly linked to diseases such as heart disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes. They also examine past studies which have found no apparent link. The authors warn readers that their findings are certain to be controversial because they stand to impact the interests of many in the meat and dairy industries as well as the medical community.

The book advocates a whole foods, plant-based diet (a type of vegan diet which also restricts refined carbohydrates and highly processed foods) as a means to minimize and/or reverse the development of chronic disease.

Criticism

The book claims that the thermic effect of carbohydrate is greater than that of protein. However, it is generally accepted that the opposite is true.

Quotes

“The results of these, and many other studies, showed nutrition to be far more important in controlling cancer promotion than the dose of the initiating carcinogen…Nutrients from animal-based foods increased tumor development while nutrients from plant-based foods decreased tumor development.”
  • "A major review on diet and cancer, prepared for the U.S. Congress in 1981 estimated that genetics only determines about 2 – 3% of the total cancer risk.” “Genes function only by being activated, or expressed, and nutrition plays a critical role in determining which genes, good and bad, are expressed.”
  • “Several studies have now shown, in both experimental animals and in humans, that consuming animal-based protein increases blood cholesterol levels. Saturated fat and dietary cholesterol also raise blood cholesterol, although these nutrients are not as effective at doing this as is animal protein. In contrast, plant-based foods contain no cholesterol and, in various other ways, help to decrease the amount of cholesterol made by the body.”
  • “As blood cholesterol levels in rural China rose in certain counties the incidence of “Western” diseases also increased. What made this so surprising was that Chinese levels were far lower than we had expected. The average level of blood cholesterol was only 127 mg/dl, which is almost 100 points less than the American average (215 mg/dl). ...Some counties had average levels as low as 94 mg/dl. …For two groups of about twenty-five women in the inner part of China, average blood cholesterol was at the amazingly low level of 80 mg/dl.”
  • "[In China] lower blood cholesterol levels are linked to lower rates of heart disease, cancer and other ‘Western’ diseases, even at levels far below those considered ‘safe’ in the ‘West’. As blood cholesterol levels decreased from 170 mg/dl to 90 mg/dl, cancers of the liver, rectum, colon, male lung, female lung, breast, childhood leukemia, adult leukemia, childhood brain, stomach and esophagus decreased.”
  • “The findings from the China Study indicate that the lower the percentage of animal-based foods that are consumed, the greater the health benefits—even when that percentage declines from 10% to 0% of calories. So it’s not unreasonable to assume that the optimum percentage of animal-based products is zero, at least for anyone with a predisposition for a degenerative disease.”
  • "[Consumption of animal protein and fats leads to] early age of menarche” (11 years old in the U.S. versus 17 on average in a sample of 130 Chinese villages), and also “leads to higher levels of blood hormones such as estrogen. These hormone levels remain high throughout the reproductive years if consumption of diet rich in animal-based food is maintained. Under these conditions, age of menopause is deferred by three to four years…thus extending the reproductive life...[An] increase in years of reproductive life is associated with increased breast cancer risk.”
  • “In the China Study, we assessed antioxidant status by recording the intakes of vitamin C and beta-carotene and measuring the blood levels of vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids. Among these antioxidant biomarkers, vitamin C provided the most impressive evidence.” “The most significant vitamin C association with cancer was its relationship with the number of cancer-prone families in each area. When levels of vitamin C in the blood were low, these families were more likely to have a high incidence of cancer.” “Cancer rates were five to eight times higher for areas where fruit intake was lowest. The same vitamin C effect existing for these cancers also existed for coronary heart disease, hypertensive heart disease and stroke.” “…The triumph of health lies not in the individual nutrients, but in the whole foods that contain those nutrients: plant-based foods. In a bowl of spinach salad, for example, we have fiber, antioxidants, and countless other nutrients that are orchestrating a wondrous symphony of health as they work in concert within our bodies.”
  • “The colors of fruits and vegetables are derived from a variety of chemicals called antioxidants. These chemicals are almost exclusively found in plants.”
  • “Using dietary means alone…after just three weeks, the Type 1 diabetic patients were able to lower their insulin medication by an average of 40%. Their blood sugar profiles improved dramatically. Just as importantly, their cholesterol levels dropped by 30%.” "[In other studies,] of the twenty-five Type 2 patients, twenty-four were able to discontinue their insulin medication...of forty patients on medication at the start of the program, thirty-four were able to discontinue all medication after only twenty-six days.”
  • “Overweight subjects were told to eat as much as they wanted of foods that were mostly low-fat, whole food and plant-based. In three weeks these people lost an average of seventeen pounds. [Weight loss found in other] published results for still more intervention studies using a low-fat, whole foods, mostly plant-based diet: About two to five pounds after twelve days. About ten pounds lost in three week. Sixteen pounds over twelve weeks. Twenty-four pounds lost after one year.”
  • “Much less likely to occur if the diet includes too many refined carbohydrates. Sweets, pastries, and pasta won’t do it. …One of the main reasons I usually refer to the optimal diet as a whole foods, plant-based diet.”
  • "One can feasibly add more than ten years to average life expectancy with improved quality of life."

Today's GREAT rant

“I don’t know if it’s God we have murdered; I don’t think that is possible. But capitalism has killed compassion. In a society which only worships the dollar, those who aren’t potential income generating units have no value. None.”

by Rebecca Gibson

“…..What more does man want to know, than that the hand or power that made these things is divine, is omnipotent? Let him believe this, with the force it is impossible to repel if he permits his reason to act, and his rule of moral life will follow of course.”

—Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason

I don’t know if it’s God we have murdered; I don’t think that is possible. But capitalism has killed compassion. In a society which only worships the dollar, those who aren’t potential income generating units have no value. None. Children, the elderly, the disabled, the disenfranchised, the damaged….there is no one to care for them as everyone who could be compassionate and offer care -(we the prey)- are busting our asses just to eat and keep a roof over our heads as the wealth of society gets sucked up by greed and extravagance for the feckless few.

So how do the incapacitated live? What is their value, and why is that even a question? What has happened to mercy and humility, compassion and charity? So many of the incapacitated are casualties of the status quo in the first place - a botched surgery or birth, a drug reaction, heart disease and diabetes and obscene obesity from eating grease and garbage, cancer from chemicals, Alzheimer’s from aluminum, insanity from insanity, the list goes on and on. It has all been co-opted by capitalism: nursing home corporations are publicly traded commodities - rife with enough requisite bureaucratic red tape to keep individual do-gooders (those pesky charity types!) out of the business, community mental health centers and hospitals are just trying to turn a profit, and the care and education of children has been relegated to the same wage-bracket as a garbage collector. In none of these endeavors is there anything more than lip-service to the idea of actual ‘quality of service’, despite the exceptional individuals who do care and try.

I find myself wondering, when I venture out into neon ugly-world, when did it all turn so hideous? I heard this old sixties song recently, Cat Stevens’ ‘Peace Train’, and I thought wistfully, tears in my eyes, ‘Wow, music from the time of hope…’ and I realized in that moment that the time of hope was gone. In 2008 most people hope that the stock market will recover, that they won’t lose their job or home, or that they will be the first one to get a new iPhone. Hope for such “utopian trivialities” as beauty or peace or justice is all but dead.

I get bashed in society for ‘feeling’, but I do feel, and mostly I feel sadness and despair. I am not depressed. I’m just devastated by what I see. I love life, the Earth, people, creatures, flowers and fish. And I grieve over all the unnecessary suffering.

I despair over the question, “what can one person do?” Especially when I am in debtors prison with the rest of the ‘common people,’ changing careers as I am from therapist to teacher–in order to take advantage of the new ‘10-year public service loan forgiveness’ program for my student loans, a form of indentured servitude, institutionalized with a benevolent facade. It’ll be costing me $200k or so to repay the $38k I borrowed so many years ago (And yes I have always worked—even when I was in school). My first job after college in 1989 paid 16k/year, and I had a baby to care for. I’ve paid 18k, but the balance is now over 100k. Oh well. Somebody’s gotta feed the monster, and it’s just capitalism kibble, right? That’ll teach me to get a degree in Human Services—right?

(And by the way, I know you’re tired of hearing about my student loans, but I am also tired of hearing about your vacations in the Hamptons and your ailing portfolios, so fuck you, OK?)

Overall, I feel very fortunate, looking forward to a new challenge, a way to be of service. The finer things in therapy, those I loved, have mostly disappeared anyway. The human potential movement has died. Now it’s Big-Pharma and ‘life-coaching’, which teaches how not to feel anything and to get your own big old slice of capitalism pie. (Neither of these worked for me though because I was cursed with a conscience.)

The most grievous aspect of therapy today is the military’s treatment of all these kids/soldiers with PTSD. The approach is not to heal them, but rather to desensitize them to war, using specially designed video games and antidepressants to get them back out on the battlefield. “What are you whining about? Get back out there and kill someone!” It is so twisted it makes me want to scream.

The “official” reporting on the “problem” gives these stats: 2 out of 5 will come back from war with symptoms of PTSD, and these only include the guys (and gals) who are labeled as having the “problem.” As a therapist and a human being, I am more concerned about the 3 out of 5 who can go to war and be unaffected, be okay with it, and be ready to go back for more. Isn’t war supposed to be hell?

I had already realized, though, that as a therapist I was only treating the victims of the ones who are really sick, the human beings who comprised the “collateral damage” of aggressive capitalism’s predatory creepiness (imposed on my poor, middle, and working class clients by the sociopaths comprising the power elite). Savage capitalism and all of its metastasized tumors gone ape shit and amoral, sucking the life, light and beauty out of people, taking over their DNA and hijacking their thought-processes altogether. Damaged people, people damaged by other people, damaged relationships, depression and despair. I specialized in stress, pain, trauma and addiction.

Despite everything, including a little chip on my shoulder, a bit of damage myself, emotional scars, and a debt-monkey on my back, I cling tenaciously to hope, to the beauty of life, tirelessly coaxing these gossamer filaments of grace in my direction, wrapping them around me and weaving them back into the world, rearranging my screams of horror into a symphony of service, sacrifice, simple kindness, poetry, and the soothing of others. That is just what I do. Seeing, creating space, holding a space, a bubble of grace, the whole of the horrors here, yes, but held in abeyance by the liquid light exuded from these fine gossamer threads.

The ugliness and brutality of the world demand acknowledgment. I see it; yes, I do. I feel it; yes, I do. Ever present, it affects me too. A hideous blight on the otherwise beautiful countenance of this sparkling blue planet, man-made horror mostly, but life on earth does present some innate challenges for our species - the daily grind of existence, food, clothing, and shelter. Birth and death, weather and worms, disease and decay, it is a little gritty and no one is exempt. Community and cooperation for the common good are essential. We cannot survive otherwise. We are a we, I am an us, even isolated, membership in the tribe of humanity is an inherent fact of existence.

Years ago…..an infusion of light and grace and beauty when I needed it most. The veil of illusion, the illusion of separateness, receded in soul-drenching light, and I saw and experienced the unity of life directly. I have never forgotten. Light-love-life, the source and the substance of all manifestations, each individual an expression of that same light - the same light! - shining through different windows. All creatures, plants and trees, elements and ethers, made and manifested from that light. Feel it! Tiger as tigerness, a spider spinning its web, the cycle of life in water and wind, and the weightiness of rocks. The same mysterious essence churns an ugly bulb into an iris, converts your meals into memories and muscles, beats your heart, grew you in your mother’s womb. We are we. The mystery. The same light shines, but, oh, are some windows darkened!

The dark and the light. The dark is no reality unto itself, it is an absence, an obscuration of light, an alteration of light - pride and greed, lust and anger, envy, gluttony, sloth -the classics, the seven Deadlies, always (s)in fashion as light-darkening window shades. Ignorance. Cruelty. Judgment. (I’m judging here.) Selfishness. Subjugation, domination and the ruthless games that people play with power. The light and the darkness. Murder as entertainment. A beautiful child indoctrinated, poisoned by brutality and war and the sick sad saga of humanity’s struggles, twisted and distorted, hurting in and hurting out again.

A miracle and a triumph that any beauty remains, for the darkness is always exerting its influence, claiming its real estate, declaring it’s own autonomous existence. When in reality it is a phantom and nothing more, an absence of the real, a nothing. This is why it evaporates in the light. It is here but it isn’t really anything and it isn’t separate and it doesn’t exist. It is an absence of actual existence. All is light, that is all there is…om mani padme hum - bhargo devasya dhimahi. The dark is the light diminished, obscured. I seek the light which contains the darkness; I welcome it, draw it in, embrace it, brighten the light all around me with each precious breath and wrap the gossamer filaments around the Earth, trailing it off of my long wing feathers as I fly.

I am us and we are we and I wish light into the heart of every human. That light can stop you in your tracks if you let it in and I wish you would. That light can kill you and give birth to you in a moment, a timeless flash. It happened to me. That light is who we are. Wake up people! See the light! Wish light into the heart of every person and into the heart of the earth herself. Shine enough light to eradicate this darkness, render it benign, render it what it is, a simple shadow. This light is who we are! It isn’t enough to seek the spotlight for yourself, to seek you and yours at any cost. You seek survival with convoluted compromises, death traps, dripping darkness. Survival at the expense of another is not survival. We are we. Is it so hard to see?

Is it too much to say, “I, for one, will not seek survival at the expense of another?” (The true spirit of humanity requires that we seek survival for one another. Are we about to learn this the hard way? And I know, I know that if you are even reading this I am preaching to the choir…but you can weave the light! Weave it!)

To survive we need one another. Man needs a family, community, a tribe - air and water and earth. For the first time in history it has become obvious that the tribe is global. It’s all of us, everyone. We are we. Wish light into the heart of your so-called enemy, light, survival, comfort and peace to his family and yours, mine and hers. To all of us. Be the we. C’mon people, be the we!

For the sake of your own survival, you and yours, us and ours, and them and theirs, all of us, all of the species of the earth, it isn’t really so hard to say:

“I will not earn my living selling chemical and preservative-laden corn-syrup water to people, especially children, or dangerous and harmful Big-Pharma drugs peddled with lies and falsified research, or food that is nothing more than garbage and poison and GMO science-fiction. I will not work for a company whose profits depend upon the exploitation of sweatshop labor in Sri Lanka or Singapore or South America, or the devastation of much-needed forests all over the world, and I will not combine my efforts with greed-mongers, warmongers, murderers, and/or perverts. I will not work in a field that has anything to do with plastic, as the puddle of it in the Pacific is frighteningly large already, and I also mean plastic as in credit cards, other debt traps and plastic surgery for the sake of vanity alone. (And by the way my whole fucking refrigerator is full of plastic containers and it makes me sick. Can’t someone who knows this stuff find another way?) I will never work in advertising (consumer seduction) or commercial mainstream journalism-as-entertainment. I will do something better. I will find another way. This is killing me/us/we. So be it. I will find another way. I will be the we.”

Think of a better idea, one that helps others (and thus you too) to survive and thrive. Your own survival depends on it. So does mine. You can do this. If you will do this there are those of us who will help you; love will grow and become light for us all. Wish the light, think it and it’s yours because it is you, waft it around, and with each breath breathe it deep into the heart of humanity. They are you and they are me and you are us and we are we. Grab the gossamer threads of light and beauty and grace, get busy and don’t let them go. I need you. You are me and we are we. We need all of us to be whole and free. Tat Tvam Asi.

Think about it. That is the gift of the mind. When you or I hear about someone making a difference, it always began with just one person and one idea. Visualize that little cartoon light-bulb flashing on over that one head, yours, mine or someone else’s. Anyone. Everyone. Illumination. Enlightenment. A bright idea. It’s the idea, that infusion of light. Infuse the light. Weave it in. Wish it into the heart of humanity. Wrap it and weave it around the earth. It is our responsibility and our essence and our birthright. Breathe it. Fan the flames. Breathe as if you are the breath and heartbeat of life and all that is, for you are, and I am. You are me and we are we. I love you. Breathe it in. Be the we.

Peace Train
by Cat Stevens

Now I’ve been happy lately,

thinking about the good things to come

And I believe it could be,

something good has begun

Oh I’ve been smiling lately,

dreaming about the world as one

And I believe it could be,
some day it’s going to come

Cause out on the edge of darkness,

there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country,
come take me home again
Now I’ve been smiling lately,

thinking about the good things to come

And I believe it could be,
something good has begun

Oh peace train sounding louder

Glide on the peace train

Come on now peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller

Everyone jump upon the peace train

Come on now peace train

Get your bags together,

go bring your good friends too

Cause it’s getting nearer,

it soon will be with you

Now come and join the living,

it’s not so far from you
And it’s getting nearer,

soon it will all be true
Now I’ve been crying lately,

thinking about the world as it is

Why must we go on hating,

why can’t we live in bliss

Cause out on the edge of darkness,

there rides a peace train

Oh peace train take this country,
come take me home again

And finally:

“One way or another, we are poised at the edge of forever.”

Another reminder to FREE Leonard Peltier (me too !)

Hey--check out this powerful prayer for Leonard from the daily meditation sent out by my good friend Chi at chioceansuns@peoplepc.com . It seems to me the Christian community in this country, and ALL of us, following Chi's example, might successfully appeal to President Bush for Executive Clemency for Leonard Peltier as a sacred political act, symbolically taking Leonard down from his Cross.

Leonard has an official parole hearing in December 2008--last month of Pres. Bush's presidency. His next such hearing, should this one fail, will not be until 2017--when Leonard will be 73 years old (he's been in prison since he was 31). It's time for all of us--and EACH of us--to ACT NOW-TODAY! to free our Brother.

I fondly imagine the nationwide Christian community gently imploring the President to free this martyr of his People. This can be done by simply FWDing this email prayer to president@whitehouse.gov with a KINDLY personal request from YOU that he release Leonard, followed by this short and wondrous prayer by Chi. If the lawyers and judges can't free Leonard, I believe this prayer by millions of us in unison could and would. If your heart tells you to take this simple prayerful act of FWDing this email to the President, please CC me at harveyarden@starpower.net so I can keep vague track of what's happening. Please CC or FWD this message to friends and family and whomever you know with a good heart.

Become part of One Great Universal Prayer for Leonard!

Your brother & Leonard's,

/Harvey Arden

And Lord, comfort our brother Leonard this morning.
Hold Him in Your Loving Arms and grant him peace.
And then free our brother Father.
Free him and send him home to his family and to his people.

Oh Lord Jesus, You alone know the heart of a man. You alone see the tears of each human being held in bondage, each prisoner unjustly and unfairly accused.
Ease all their burdens this morning, Oh Great Lover of a Wounded Heart.
Ease not only their hurts this morning, but heal the hurts and wounds of their loved ones.

Today we feel freed by the Loving and Comforting Prayers of Christ Jesus.

Walk in peace today family,

~~Chi'

Yup, here are the world's greatest medical advances (poll)

World's Greatest Medical Advancements

World's Greatest Medical Advancements

To be sure, over the years, I've tweaked medical doctors in my newsletters and blogs. But truth be told, unlike many in the alternative health community, I'm actually a huge fan of doctors -- not so much the organizations that represent them -- but the doctors themselves. Yes, there are doctors who are incompetent or unethical, but for the most part, the vast majority of medical doctors that I have met in my life are extremely competent, highly dedicated, and often even heroic. And make no mistake, no matter how into alternative health you are, there are times you absolutely need a doctor. If your name is John Wayne Bobbitt, you needed a doctor after your wife "altered" you, not an herbalist.

That said, when it comes to most catastrophic illnesses, medical doctors are clueless. They merely manage symptoms and push test numbers up and down. And when it comes to health and nutrition, for the most part, things are even worse; doctors are often arrogantly ignorant. On average, the typical doctor spends a total of 6-8 hours in their entire medical career studying health and nutrition -- and yet they feel free to dogmatically pronounce on all aspects of diet and supplementation with less knowledge than any lay person who has read two good books on the subject. For shame!

In doctors the developed world, we have grown up trusting our doctors. They are frequently the heroes on our favorite TV shows, and we have largely turned over to them complete responsibility for our health. And yes, modern medical science has made incredible advances and contributions which have alleviated much pain and suffering. Surgical technique (the cutting apart and repairing of the human body) has made remarkable progress. Identification of germs that cause disease and improved sanitation, which aids in preventing that disease, have also seen epic achievements. Burn treatment, trauma, and emergency room care are nothing less than miraculous. When it comes to these areas of medicine, the value doctors bring to us is impossible to measure.

It occurred to me, it might be fun in this issue of the newsletter to examine some of medicine's great achievements and see how they stack up when viewed with a skeptical eye. To do that, however, I needed to identify those discoveries that modern medicine takes the most pride in. It would be nice if there were a list of achievements of which the medical community was most proud of so I didn't have to arbitrarily choose them myself. I cringe when the tables are reversed and the medical community evaluates alternative health supplements or procedures by setting up its own protocols for evaluation, and then dismisses the supplement based on that flawed protocol. An example would be evaluating the cancer benefits of laetrile as an isolated supplement, even though every clinic that claimed success with it used it as just one piece of a multi-faceted health protocol. Testing laetrile out of context, then, is like deciding that heart transplants actually involve two separate procedures:

  • Removing the damaged heart
  • Then replacing the empty space with the donor heart

And once you've made that false assumption, it would be easy to make another, that since they are separate procedures, you need to test them independently of each other -- like deciding to test laetrile as a standalone supplement. But if you separate the pieces from the whole, it should not be surprising that the outcomes disappoint and that you come to the conclusion that heart removal by itself is 100% fatal and therefore should not be recommended in any circumstances. It's nonsense obviously, as is most medical evaluation of alternative health protocols and supplements. In any case, I did not want to be accused of the same kind of hypocrisy by arbitrarily choosing a list of medical accomplishments that were handpicked by me so that I could trash them. Fortunately, the British Medical Journal solved my problem. Last year, it ran a survey among its readers (mostly doctors) to determine the biggest medical advancements of all time. (Thank you BMJ.) So, based on their list, here, with my comments on them, are the top ten.

  1. Sanitation: 1,795 votes. The importance of clean drinking water and waste disposal was recognized in the late 1800s, as diseases began to be linked to impure water. However, the World Health Organization says there is still a long way to go. More than 1.1 billion people now lack access to drinking water from an improved source; 2.6 billion do not have basic sanitation.

I'm not actually sure if this qualifies as a medical breakthrough. It's more of a public health issue. And heck, the people who run most of these operations are bureaucrats and PHDs, not medical doctors. But hey, medical doctors were involved in some of the discoveries, so let's give them credit for what is truly a major advance in health. Then again, if they take the credit for improved sanitation, shouldn't they also take the blame for the proliferation of all of the antibacterial wipes and soaps that have flooded the market -- and all of the problems associated with their indiscriminate use?

  2. Antibiotics: 1,642 votes. Alexander Fleming, a British bacteriologist, discovered penicillin in 1928 by accident when he sloppily left a Petri dish of bacteria unwashed in his lab. He found a substance (later named penicillin) growing on it that killed the bugs, and modern-day antibiotics got its start. Fleming shared the Nobel Prize in 1945 for the discovery.

I'm happy to give doctors the credit for this advancement, as long as you also give them the blame for trashing it. Thanks to overprescribing, overuse, and poor management of patients, the medical community has created a situation even worse than existed before the advent of antibiotics. Welcome to the world of medically created super-bacteria. You don't need a military conspiracy to create Outbreak-like disasters. Medical arrogance works very nicely, thank you.

  3. Anesthesia: 1,574 votes. In 1846, a Boston dentist used ether during surgery, putting an end to much of the pain of operations. Since then, general anesthesia has become a mainstay.

Oh, a big thumbs-up on this one. However, it's not quite the advance you might think it is. The use of opiates and herbs to kill pain before surgery goes back to ancient Rome, and the use of acupuncture and chilling of limbs before surgery goes back even further in time to ancient China. Yes, modern anesthesia is an improvement -- but true credit for this discovery belongs to alternative healers who came along well before the modern medical fraternity was even a glint in its founders' eyes.

  4. Vaccines: 1,337 votes. Vaccines have helped prevent a variety of diseases -- including polio, whooping cough, and measles. The first was Edward Jenner's smallpox vaccine, in 1796.

This too is a nuanced issue. For every positive you can point to when it comes to vaccination, you can point to a corresponding negative. Look, I'm not saying vaccines should be eliminated (besides, that's not going to happen anyway) -- just that we should use a lot more discrimination than we are at the moment in their application. And with that said, I'm not sure they belong in the top 10 medical advances.

  5. Discovery of DNA structure: 1,000 votes. Scientists James Watson and Francis Crick presented the structure of the DNA helix, the molecule responsible for carrying genetic information from one generation to the next, in 1953. It earned them the Nobel Prize in 1962.

It certainly is profound, but I'm not sure you can call it a great medical advance… yet. At the moment, only one disease has actually been cured using gene therapy, and a rather obscure one at that. At this point in time, the benefits of gene therapy are more promise than reality.

But there's another potential benefit to the unraveling of DNA: predicting the likelihood of disease by looking at your genetic code. Billed as a major advance in medicine, it unfortunately has a dark side. First, it can potentially be used to deny people access to insurance, based on the risk factors discovered in their DNA. But more importantly, as is already happening, it can cause a medical overreaction. Consider breast cancer, where after testing positive for the "breast cancer gene," women are opting to have their breasts prophylactically removed rather than risk a future cancer. But studies have shown that diet and lifestyle can turn cancer genes on and off in a matter of days. A recent study of men with prostate cancer found that diet and lifestyle changes could "switch off" some 453 cancer-promoting genes, while simultaneously "switching on" some 48 cancer-fighting genes. If you're going to claim the discovery of DNA as number 5 on the list, then don't you have to list the discovery of alternative health as number 4 or higher because the study proves that diet and lifestyle trump DNA?

  6. Germ theory: 843 votes. In the late 1800s, Louis Pasteur was the first to suggest that disease is caused by exposure to microorganisms. Others furthered the theory, showing that specific diseases are caused by specific "bugs."

Come on! How many times can you take credit for the same discovery? Aren't Sanitation (#1) and Antibiotics (#2) expressions of germ theory? Sanitation reduces exposure to germs, and antibiotics kill germs. It's all based on germ theory.

  7. Oral contraceptive pill: 842 votes. The pill arrived on the U.S. market in 1960. For women who use it correctly, oral contraception can be up to 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

I'm not sure what to say about this discovery without offending some large segment of my subscribers. Suffice it to say, that for whatever benefits may be ascribed to this discovery, the tremendous increase in female cancers we've seen over the last couple of decades may not be unrelated. Synthetic hormones wreck havoc with the body.

  8. Evidence-based medicine: 636 votes. As the name suggests, evidence-based medicine involves making use of the current best evidence (such as research), combined with a patient's values and a doctor's clinical experience, to make decisions about patient care. The term was coined in the early '90s and the concept has been evolving ever since.

Ah, one of my favorites. In principle a huge winner. In practice, not so much. First, far less medicine is evidence based than you might believe -- only about 15% as it turns out. And don't forget the practice of off-labeling drugs, which bypasses all testing -- and of which the FDA feels so highly that they've decided to eliminate virtually all restrictions. And then, there's the fact that much of what we think is evidence-based, turns out, on closer examination, to actually be based on very weak evidence and is often contradictory. Bottom line: evidence-based medicine is great in theory, not so much in practice.

  9. Medical imaging: 471 votes. The X-ray was accidentally discovered in 1895. Since then, the field has expanded, giving us computed tomography (CT scans), positron emission (PET scans), magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), and ultrasound.

What can you say bad about medical imaging? Oh yeah, right -- the fact that continued exposure to X-rays is a contributing factor to cancer. But other than that….

Then again, MRI's certainly avoid that problem.

  10. Computers: 405 votes. From medical records to insurance, to making sure your new medication isn't going to clash with an existing one, computers are now considered as important as their stethoscopes by some doctors. They've been in use in medicine since the early 1960s. Doctors can access information on new drugs and interactions, new medical studies, and clinical trials, and keep patient records stored at their fingertips.

Okay, I'm not sure how this qualifies as an advancement in medicine. It's an advancement in technology that has been incorporated into medicine. You might as well claim automobiles as a major advancement in medical technology since they allow ambulances to reach hospitals more quickly. Or for that matter, what about telephones and fax machines that allowed doctors in different cities to confer about the same patient in real time. I'm sorry, computers are a great advancement, but do not qualify as a medical advancement per se.

Or if they do qualify as a medical advancement, then computers qualify equally as an "alternative health advancement." Think about it. Thanks to computers, I can communicate the principles of alternative health, recommend supplements and therapies, and call government health agencies to task -- and broadcast that information to my subscriber base, which is located in virtually every country in the world (hello, all of you in Iran, Zambia, and Malaysia) with the push of a button.

Conclusion

But enough playing around. Let me list what I consider to be some of medicines greatest advancements… yet to come.

The medical hit parade according to Jonny Nostradamus

  1. Stem cell research: Despite a great deal of resistance to stem cell research outside of the medical community, advances have continued -- and in most cases without the need for embryonic stem cells. Tests on mice for treatment of diabetes have shown that stem cell therapy can indeed stimulate the regeneration of lost beta cells to produce insulin. And companies are now gearing up to begin marketing the use of umbilical cord stem cells in the "theoretical" treatment of a whole range of disease. Although more wishful thinking than practical at the moment, stem cell therapy is likely to begin asserting itself as a major medical treatment for a multitude of diseases in the next 10-20 years.

  2. Emergency surgery: It doesn't matter how many supplements you take or how good your diet, after a major accident, you're going to be thankful for all of the great advancements in surgical technique and body part repair that we have witnessed over the last 50 years. Sadly, much of the great advancements in surgical technique have come as the result of treating battlefield wounds and automobile accidents. Truly, there is almost no limit to the types of wounds and injuries that can now be successfully treated by surgeon.

  3. Prosthetics: The advancement in prosthetics is almost mind boggling -- again, something beyond the capability of alternative medicine. In fact, Luke Skywalker's prosthetic arm in The Empire Strikes Back is looking less like science fiction by the day. And it's not just limbs, the vision goggles that allowed the blind Geordi LaForge in Star Trek to see are also becoming reality.

  4. Sub cellular intervention (gene therapy, metabolomics, and metagenomics): Even though I made fun of it earlier, gene therapy is coming. Yes, diet and lifestyle can turn genes on and off, but gene therapy will ultimately be able to replace missing genes and repair defective genes. Again, we're talking 10-20 years down the road before we see any significant number of practical applications, but they're coming.

But gene therapy is just the tip of the iceberg. Metabolomics is the study of all of the byproducts produced by your body's myriad metabolic processes. These metabolites are easily found in the urine and blood and provide a wealth of information as to the state of your health, and more importantly, where your health is headed. Certain patterns of metabolites can easily identify schizophrenia, and more importantly, how a patient is likely to respond to a particular drug when treating that schizophrenia. Metagenomics, on the other hand, is the study of the bacteria that live in and on our body. That's right, we are not alone. Over 1,000 species of bacteria live symbiotically not just in our guts, but in our noses, mouths, urinary tracts, and on our skin (6 different species in the crook of your elbow alone). We now know, for example, that the bacteria on your skin moisturize it and that the bacteria in your gut moderate inflammatory bowel problems and may determine whether or not you become obese.

  5. Crisis intervention and options for those who won't take care of themselves: Even though we know that diet and lifestyle can prevent and/or reverse much of the catastrophic illness we see in the world today, that doesn't matter to huge segments of the population. Heck, everyone knows smoking is unhealthy, and yet vast numbers of people throughout the world still choose to smoke. The bottom line is that we need options for those people who are too undisciplined or unwilling to take control of their own health. And we need options for those people who need to buy time while pursing an alternative option when their condition is discovered late in the game. Medicine can play an essential role in buying time in times of crisis and in providing options for people who won't take care of themselves.

The role of medicine

As we look back, it is easy to see that modern medical science has indeed made incredible advances and contributions which have alleviated much pain and suffering -- and will likely continue to do so as humanity stumbles into the future. However, in our exploration, we we have seen glimpses of medicine's darker side-- chinks in the armor of its accomplishments if you will. For now, though, let's give medicine its due and leave on a high note. Congratulations to doctors and all they have done!

In our next issue, however, we will explore some of the less positive aspects of modern medicine's "achievements."
