Dear friends

Trading Democracy is a documentary being produced in a partnership between the Mid-island–Nanaimo chapter of the Council of Canadians (www.canadiansnanaimo.org) and Paul Manly of Manly Media Ltd. (www.manlymedia.com) We’re seeking your support to help us make this film.

The purpose of this project is to inform Canadians about the two worst trade agreements in Canadian history - the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) and the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP). Since these agreements are well advanced, time is a critical factor in this project.

Recently while Paul was documenting the protest at the SPP summit in Montebello he caught three Quebec police officers posing as activists with rocks in hand. As you may know, he posted this footage on YouTube and it has now been seen by hundreds of thousands of viewers world wide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St1-WTc1kow), and received wide coverage in the mainstream media. This deplorable act by the provincial police of Quebec-which violates our right to peaceful assembly - must not be allowed to go unaddressed.

We feel very strongly that these two trade agreements thrust Canadians into the most critical period since Confederation. They will, if unchallenged, have an enormously detrimental effect upon our democracy and freedoms, our quality of life and our standard of living. Our sovereignty is threatened as it has never been before.

We must stop these agreements, and the way to do it is to inform the Canadian public of what is at risk, and to describe to them what must be done to overcome the problem. These are the two objectives of the documentary. More information on the documentary can be found on our website at www.canadiansnanaimo.org - where you can also watch the youtube videos from Montebello and find out how you can help and get your name in the credits.

We will be releasing the first of five ten minute videos on the internet in the week of October 15th and plan to have the full documentary ready by the end of November. We are currently fund-raising to cover expenses including travel, footage purchases, insurance and DVD manufacturing so that we can distribute free DVD’s across Canada. There will be no license fees for screening the documentary and people will be encouraged to copy and distribute the DVD.

If you would like to help us with this project or want further information see our website at www.canadiansnanaimo.org or contact us directly. If you are able to make a financial contribution please send a cheque made payable to the ‘Nanaimo Council of Canadians’ with video project in the memo section and mail it to;
