PAINT BALL GAME GONE WILD! SECRET MILITARY EXERCISES NEAR MOHAWK COMMUNITIES? [In-depth Report]

If Canada is such a peace loving country, why is it saber rattling and playing war games like "Vigilant Shield 09"? Huge military exercises are taking place on Turtle Island this month. These are being run by “NorthCom” and “NORAD” [North American AeroDefence Command]. NorthCom works with “Canada Command” and coordinates civil incidents through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security DHS. This has nothing to do with Afghanistan. It has to do with “civil” control, not democracy. The Canadian part is called “Determined Dragon, Trillium Response”. [What bunch of jerks made this one up? Sounds like some kind of teenage fantasy video? These guys are scary!]

In the U.S. during a "disaster or emergency" JTF-CS operates within a Department of Defense chain of command that begins and ends with the President of the U.S. Canada is on this dog chain. In other words, it gave up its independence. Civilian agencies, including "State, local, territorial, and tribal [band] governments, and private sector owners and operators of critical infrastructure," would be controlled by the military. They define the “disaster” that will lead to world domination.

What’s going on here? Details are scarce, especially on the Trenton Air Force Base aspect which is near the Mohawk community of Tyendinaga. Another exercise is going on in Hamilton, near Six Nations. Another in Thunder Bay. Are there others? Is it a coincidence that these are mostly next to Ongwehonwe communities?

The main focus is "Communications Interoperability" to coordinate various agencies: the military, Joint Task Force JTF, army, navy and air force; all police agencies, RCMP, OPP, CBSA, “Aboriginal” police, municipal police; emergency responders, ambulances, fire trucks, rail security and select government bureaucrats; and the effected private sector such as nuclear reactors. “Interoperability” means coordinating all their goons and thugs to have “Joint War Games”.

It looks more like an exercise designed to set up the infra structure needed to impose “martial law”. Communications and radio frequencies will come under one command. The new device called the "Incident Commanders” Radio Interface looks like a cigar box, about 5" x 8" x 2". It can be held by one wired-up adolescent to receive and send messages to all these agencies during an emergency, natural or man-made disaster, including a "terrorist attack". But who and where are the terrorists? The only scary guys in the neighborhood is them!

NORAD is the North American AeroDefense Command, a U.S.-Canada control center based in Colorado, that is supposed to warn of an attack by aircraft or missiles. Project HAARP is the Pentagon-run “High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program” with plans to heat the earth’s ionosphere, using high frequency radio waves. How do we know they haven’t already been doing this? The military can send signals to nuclear subs and spy deeply underground [www.haarp.net]. This is based near Anchorage Alaska where military exercises are going on too. E Systems which is owned by Raytheon has the defense contract to run this. [They’re the biggest arms makers and dealers in the world.]

It’s all scripted. The U.S. has a “Hollywood Style” National Training Center NTC in California and Joint Readiness Training Center JRTC in Louisiana. They’re not teaching peace. They’re teaching warfare against Iraq and Afghanistan and whoever else gets in their way. Hi fi simulations are created, complete with mock towns and actors portraying natives and insurgents. One actor even dresses like a “tribal sheik”. Bombs are exploded and rockets stream in from the countryside. Civilians scream and scatter. The victims wear gory make up to simulate bloody wounds and morbid deaths. Injured civilians are left behind by the soldiers. The soldiers secure the town before going in to meet with the “regional governor”, supposedly “to win over the locals” but actually to get information from him in exchange for money. The young natives are taken away to Abu Graib for questioning. [It has already been established that the methods used there include torture and death]. Observers judge and grade each performance. Our question is who are the “traitors” who help them set up these scenarios? [www.worldpoliticsreview.com] Are these same guys writing the script for Bin Laden and Al Qaida too? Meanwhile the Taliban will just have to keep on improvising!

In Canada in the 1990s, after the Mohawk-Oka Crisis, a mockup of the Mohawk community of Kahnawake was created at a New Brunswick army base to help soldiers practice warfare on us. Who played the Mohawks? Who played the cowardly treasonous band council? It gets worse! In Saskatchewan the target at the police shooting range was a stereotypical Indigenous woman.

Doing so many exercises in our communities is meant to desensitize us to the presence of armed soldiers over, around us and in our back yards. We forget the danger. We’ll be close targets when the guns are turned on us.

Even more sinister is that these exercises can act as a cover for "real"/pretext events such as 911, the London bombings and the Oklahoma City bombing. It was hard to sort out what was real and what was an exercise. Cities where exercises have taken place such as Seattle are considered as being "prepped" for martial law.

These exercises involve hundreds of people, dozens of vehicles, boats, UAVs, helicopters and planes. Thunder Bay is the furthest inland port where large ships can load and unload and where rail and truck lines meet. Right now nuclear reactors are arriving here on their way to the Alberta oil sands. Rumors abound that these exercises will involve a simulated nuclear attack. At the same time US exercises are taking place in Alaska near the HAARP weather modification installation and in California where wild fires are now raging.

The Thunder Bay exercise will combine a severe weather event and emergency situations to create various scenarios. The first part will be an incident with a container ship along the federal port. Simulated will be collapsed buildings, human casualties, and toxic spills. The second will involve a rail incident. Simulated will be a response to a train fire/explosion and resulting toxic spill. Of course, they’re trying to recruit Ongwehonwe for the military because they want “expendable” people to do their dangerous work.

For this, National “Defense” [offense?] will transport the Toronto Heavy Urban Search and Rescue group to Thunder Bay on a Globemaster aircraft: between 400 and 550 military personnel from the Immediate Response Unit (IRU) and 63 Domestic Response Company to arrive on 22 Nov. 2008 and leave by 25 Nov. 2008.

Involved may be the local civilian authorities such as “primary responders”, provincial authorities, imbedded media, the Coast Guard (to provide fire fighting and power generation), the RCMP and Navel Reserve divers. Our Haudenosaunee territory includes many "strategic infrastructures" such as nuclear reactors, nuclear waste stockpiles, chemical factories, rail hubs and harbors. The Great-Lakes St. Lawrence is a major industrial area. The military needs the nuclear stockpile. By the way, whatever happened to the 500 tons of yellowcake that was dumped off in Montreal harbor last July 2008? It was in the papers. Then we never heard about it again.

Government agencies and actors roped into this “war movie” include Public Safety, Health Canada and Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Guess what? Indian Affairs is in there like a dirty shirt? Why? This is coming right out of our budget for desperately needed clean water, housing, education and medical care. The “chain of command” starts at the Pentagon. The recent horrific crash that killed three non-natives at the Cornwall Ontario border checkpoint in Akwesasne last week was a similar multi-“service” operation, by the Canada Border Services Agency CBSA, the Ontario Provincial Police OPP, the RCMP and the Akwesasne Mohawk Police. The guys on steroids with guns and fast cars are obviously trying to take control.

The Mohawk Police were chasing and ramming the van driven by the 21 year old non-native youth that ended in a dramatic fiery fatal crash. The cops created the kind of catastrophe they say they are protecting the public from. Two days later, while military exercises were going on in Hamilton, there was another strangely similar high speed chase of a non-native into the 6 Nations community which ended up in a crash and shoot out. Is this coincidence or was it planned?

We’re still waiting for answers at Akwesasne. Why didn't ambulances and nearby fire trucks take action immediately? Why did the Mohawk cops go straight for the load of cigarettes and not help the victims? Why were witnesses told to stop talking to the media about anything they saw? Was this staged to make an excuse to bring in the outside colonial agencies that don’t have jurisdiction but we can’t seem to get rid of? Watch out! They might be installing surveillance devices everywhere, like they did in Kanehsatake, or planting weapons to come in and raid us.

What’s going on? Are these lunatics trying to bring martial law into our communities because the colonists are saying we can’t handle the bedlam they’re creating? The fascist method is to isolate and eliminate the source of greatest resistance to their plans. Let's face it, folks, right now one of the main resisters is the freedom loving Ongwehoneh. The military interest in us could have something to do with the fact that all the land and resources of Turtle Island belong to us. In the US militant groups are getting more scared and more armed. Frightened people with guns is a dangerous scenario! Nobody wants that.

Postponing the election: It’s a joke, or is it ?

Thank heavens for the Internet; it’s put the surprise back in October Surprise.

Here is the latest big-picture conspiracy theory, which has been gathering strength on the blogosphere the way a hurricane feeds on Caribbean waters: It is widely believed, both online and, increasingly, offline, that the Bush administration intends to declare martial law and postpone next month’s elections. To prevent Barack Obama’s inevitable ascension to the Oval Office, obviously.

This theory/rumor/delusion dates back almost a year and a half, with the appearance on the White House website of National Security Presidential Directive 51, which outlined a policy for “continuity of government” in the event of a national emergency. Such emergency is defined as “any incident . . . that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the US population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions.”

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel says the new directive supplants a Cold War-era emergency memorandum that is no longer valid in the post-9/11 world, with the country at risk of a “no-notice terrorist attack.” But on websites with names such as justanothercoverup.com and abovetopsecret.com, the public document - often described as “secret” - was read quite differently. “FEMA Official States Bush Is Planning to Implement Martial Law,” is a headline from justanothercoverup. “Pelosi Declared Martial Law Last Night,” was a September headline from abovetopsecret.

Like a much-awaited Messiah (I am channeling the famous sociological text “When Prophecy Fails”), the date of the martial law takeover keeps moving forward. This spring it was to coincide with the bombing of Iran, this summer with the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ike. In the minds of conspiracy theorists, the current economic crisis seems like a propitious moment for the suspension of the November election.

The martial law paranoia has an engaging adjunct: the “FEMA coffins” story. If you Google those words, you will find pictures, videos, and reams of text explaining that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has stockpiled 30,000 - or is it 50,000? - coffins (or are they coffin liners? or . . . boxes?) in anticipation of a vast civil disturbance, presumably triggered by the imposition of martial law. “We do not have FEMA coffins,” says spokeswoman Debbie Wing.

On the one hand you say, OK, this is Internet madness. On the other hand, you note that Ireland’s largest bookmaker, Paddy Power, is laying 20-1 odds that the American election will be postponed. When I first checked that site on Tuesday, the odds were 40-1.

We’ve seen this movie before, right? Writer Ron Rosenbaum remembers a 1972 story averring that Richard Nixon asked the RAND Corporation to study whether he could postpone that election, which he won, handily. University of California historian Kathryn Olmsted, author of the forthcoming “Real Enemies: Conspiracy Theories and American Democracy, World War I to 9/11″ notes that Franklin Roosevelt’s many enemies were convinced that he would assume dictatorial powers and cancel the election of 1944, which he won handily.

“There are all kinds of trends coming together now to feed the paranoia,” Olmsted says. “The financial meltdown evokes Americans’ longtime fear and hatred of bankers, and people on the right think Obama’s candidacy might mean the end of civilization. What’s scary to the left right now is that Obama has a good chance of winning, and there is a segment of the far left that thinks ‘they’ will never let this happen.”

And of course, there is this inconvenient, animating truth: “Sometimes the government does engage in real conspiracies, like Watergate, Iran-Contra, and the assassination plot again Castro,” Olmsted explains.

Martial Law: A License to Loot, a Permit to Plunder

Breaking and entering: Where does this fit under the heading "To protect and serve"? A paramilitary "strike team" commits a felonious break-in of a home in the flood-ravaged Midwest.


Digging up the planted axioms that litter our ordinary conversations can be a revealing exercise. We learn how deeply rooted our supposedly free society has become in collectivist and militarist assumptions.

For example: How often do we hear or read language that draws a distinction between "police" and "civilians"?

Our republican framework of government supposedly prohibits the use of the military in domestic law enforcement. Yet if a police officer isn't a civilian, he of necessity must be considered some variety of soldier: He bears arms, belongs to a force organized in a military hierarchy, issues orders, and expects immediate obedience to his demands.


Police are supposedly civilian "peace officers," distinguished from the rest of the citizenry (to paraphrase Robert Peel) only by the fact that they are specially charged to protect the rights and property of the innocent as a permanent assignment, rather than an occasional necessity.


Yet when non-professional police officers are given "law enforcement" duties by local governments -- as in Gilbert, Arizona, where such people are part of a unit that can issue traffic citations and investigate accidents -- they are referred to as "civilian auxiliaries" of police departments. Again we see the critical distinction: The regular police are something other than civilians.


Roughly a year ago, USA Today reported that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had created a shortage of ammunition, leaving police and "civilians" at the back of the line. Annual police awards ceremonies across the country routinely honor not only law enforcement officers but "civilians" for various distinguished acts.


Cultivating a new crop of "law enforcement" officers: Teenagers participating in a summer police training program receive instructions from SWAT operators at a firing range.



And, significantly, it is very common for "civilians" to be charged with "disobeying an officer" even when no other alleged offense is involved. That charge makes little sense unless it is assumed not only that police exercise authority akin to military personnel, but that common civilians are at the bottom of the hierarchy. Were this actually a country in which governments and their enforcement agencies derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, wouldn't it be possible to charge a police officer with "disobeying a citizen"?


As I mentioned above, these assumptions are usually buried and carefully ignored. But they are rudely exposed whenever crisis descends on a community and the familiar pretenses are blown away. Catastrophic natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina or this year's Midwestern floods are eagerly embraced by law enforcement agencies as a pretext for overtly exercising the kind of power that many of them covertly lust to employ all the time -- the power to regiment their communities at gunpoint under a form of martial law.

Think, once again, of the roots of that expression: "Martial" has its origin in the proper name Mars, referring to the pagan deity of -- what activity?

The term unmistakably refers to a military posture, or a state of war. It is the suspension of normal life via force majeure, resulting in rule by unalloyed force. And the capacity for rule of this kind is embedded in every law enforcement body in every community across the country, simply waiting for an excuse to manifest itself.

Many who reside in our flood-ravaged Midwest are learning, as residents of New Orleans did before them, that our paramilitary "protectors" will eagerly exploit disasters in ways that compound the suffering inflicted by a natural disaster. Many citizens in such circumstances prefer to stay in their homes, running their own risks in order to protect what is theirs. But it is
standard operating procedure for police -- aided, at times, by National Guardsmen -- to force such people out of their homes, and to use the force of arms to prevent those who have left from returning.

In the wake of the floodwaters in Iowa came all of the impedimentia of military occupation -- armed guards, checkpoints, detention areas. These strictures were imposed on communities already reeling from a deadly caprice of nature. Rather than permitting people to inspect their own property, "strike teams" that included armed police broke into locked homes, including the occasional occupied dwelling.

One Cedar Rapids homeowner, understandably outraged that a "strike team" had broken into his otherwise undamaged home, confronted them and made his feelings known in forceful but measured terms. This prompted police officer Josh Bell to threaten the homeowner with arrest for "harassing" the "strike team."

That aggravated homeowner was relatively fortunate.


Fellow Cedar Rapids resident Ricky Blazek, one of several thousand flood victims reasonably infuriated by "checkpoints" preventing them from returning to their homes, tried to circumnavigate one such roadblock in his automobile. This resulted in Blazek being forced out of his car at gunpoint and arrested.


While the armed "strike teams" had unfettered access to homes of flood victims, and the media was given limited access in order to chronicle the supposed heroism of the government functionaries, homeowners basted in a seething broth of frustrated suspicion.


After all, would any thinking person feel secure knowing that government agents, freed by a natural disaster from the constraints of the pesky Fourth Amendment, had free rein to break into their homes and help themselves to anything they found therein?


Last year, the small town of Greensburg, Kansas was all but obliterated by a tornado of a ferocity not seen in the region since Dorothy Gale's house was rapted away to Oz and deposited rudely on top of Hillary Clinton's long-forgotten sister.


That's certainly more than enough for any town to suffer. However, the police establishment, displaying government's infallible gift for compounding tragedy, made matters immeasurably worse by barring residents from their homes and then selectively looting them for firearms (and, in some cases, jewelry and other valuables).

Gun Week reports that these thefts were made possible because officers "from various agencies" -- local and state police, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, FEMA, and the ATF -- "allegedly claimed that martial law had been imposed when it had not, and ordered all residents to leave the town."


Those residents who discovered the thefts and demanded the return of their firearms found them, in many cases, damaged to the point of being useless. A few opened gun cases only to discover that their firearms had been replaced with guns of inferior quality.


Bob Martin, an 83-year-old trap shooter, returned to his home the morning after the tornado to discover that several of his guns were missing. Like Ricky Blazek, Martin was originally barred access to his home by officers who claimed, falsely, that martial law had been declared by the municipal or state government. He was forced to take a circuitous route to his home; by the time he got there, his gun safe had been plundered.


After getting back several -- but not all -- of his guns (which had been damaged in police custody, Martin, along with his wife, moved out of Greensburg. He now regrets not shooting his way through the police barricade that kept him from defending his home and property.


"If I'd have known [that the martial law claim was a ruse, and the police were looting his gun collection], I had a gun of my own in the car, and I'd [have] loaded it and gone in," Martin says. "Ain't nobody going to keep me off my property."


Whatever it is that prompts a man in his ninth decade to take such a commendably militant stance toward the looters in blue, I earnestly hope it's contagious.


Provoked by the police crime wave that descended on tornado-ravaged Greenburg, the Kansas state legislature this year enacted HB 2280 (.pdf), a law that (per the official summary) "prohibits officials, during a declared state of emergency, from forcibly dispossessing an owner of any firearm not otherwise prohibited by law, or from requiring registration of firearms not required to be registered under state law."


Now, that bill was pockmarked with troubling qualifications (for instance, no peaceful and law-abiding citizen can properly be "prohibited by law" from owning any weapon he has the means to purchase and the skill to operate, "laws" holding otherwise notwithstanding). But the fundamental point here is of the "Well, duh" variety: Police shouldn't take advantage of natural disasters to steal firearms from citizens, any more than street crooks should capitalize on the opportunity to swipe consumer electronics from undefended retail stores.


Thus it is hugely significant that HB 2280, which only prohibits police from doing something they weren't authorized to do in the first place, was opposed by the Pratt County (Kansas) Sheriff, the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.


From their point of view, it's just not worth the trouble of having a natural disaster if the event can't be exploited to regiment local civilians and confiscate their firearms.

Emergency Preparedness Week starts Saturday

Many of us think natural disasters like earthquakes, volcano eruptions and floods won't affect us - only other people, the ones you see on the news.

EVENTS KICK OFF THIS SATURDAY

But what if? A flood, earthquake or a Mount Baker eruption could easily affect valley residents, so the City of Abbotsford is encouraging locals to get involved during Emergency Preparedness Week, which kicks off Saturday at Mill Lake Park.

"We are in an area where the potential for hazards can affect us every day," said the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service's Ron Hull, who is deputy chief in emergency planning for the city.

"In the event of a large-scale incident, the more prepared you are, the better."

Ideally, people should be prepared to be self-sufficient for 72 hours in such an event, Hull said, but, "realistically, we'd like to see people self-sustainable for a week."

DRINKABLE WATER, FOOD IMPORTANT

Having drinkable water and food are important, Hull said, but so is knowing about the risks, and having a plan in place if your home is destroyed.

Emergency Preparedness Week starts with a pancake breakfast on Saturday, and will feature displays, demonstrations, workshops and a first aid Olympics. Events run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Other presentations will run at the Seniors' Resource Centre [2478 McCallum Rd., Abbotsford] all week, such as It Won't Happen Here, a personal preparedness event, which starts at 7 p.m. Monday.

Emergency measures

The recent discovery of a shallow fault line near Abbotsford, capable of producing a massive earthquake, underscores the importance of being prepared for an emergency.

New hazard maps released last week by the U.S. Geological Survey show that the fault, which is 11 km long and 17 km wide, spreads from the Bellingham area north towards Abbotsford.

According to seismologist Craig Weaver, the fault has the capacity to produce an earthquake measuring 6.8, strong enough to cause damage to buildings throughout Metro Vancouver.

But earthquakes are not the only worry for Langley residents and, as Emergency Preparedness Week approaches, Langley’s Provincial Emergency Program co-ordinator Ginger Sherlock is urging everyone to use the opportunity to be prepared.

Train derailments which involve the release of toxic materials would trigger an evacuation of homes and businesses. A pandemic would cause massive disruptions in hospitals, the workplace, schools and public transportation systems, as would flooding, which posed a real threat last year.

And while the prevailing winds all but rule out a significant impact from Mount Baker blowing its top, winds from a volcanic eruption in Hawaii could blow ash over B.C.

At the moment, there are no suggestions that flooding on the scale anticipated a year ago will occur this spring, but all it would take is a spell of warm weather to melt snow all at once for major flooding to follow, Sherlock said.

“Mother Nature is unpredictable,” she said.

If for no other reason, be prepared. “It takes time to think personally how you are going to be prepared,” she said.

“Everyone needs to think, ‘How will a certain event impact me?’”

For example, people in wheelchairs need to know that there is someone who will help them. A personal support network is crucial for everyone, and someone in this network should have a key to your home, know how to operate medical equipment and where emergency supplies are kept.

Anyone on medication should keep a list, including dosage, and note all allergies.

Sherlock urges everyone to have “out of area contact cards.” Given to family and friends, these record pertinent details which can be relayed to contacts living outside the Lower Mainland.

Sherlock said that if land line phones are knocked out in an emergency, out-of-area lines may still be intact.

Emergencies can strike at any time, often with little warning, and 95 percent of those ‘rescued’ are done so by regular people, family and friends, Sherlock said.

“Everyone has a role to play in learning how to be better prepared,” Sherlock said, adding: “We need to reach out and help one another, be it business to business or neighbour to neighbour. When we know the risks, plan for or minimize those risks, we are not only prepared, but resilient as a community.”

“Don’t be left hanging,” Sherlock warns.

The City and Township of Langley will join the national campaign for Emergency Preparedness Week, May 4 to 10.

A number of activities have been planned to heighten awareness and help educate all Canadians.

Of the 57 identified hazards in B.C., earthquakes are among the most severe. Two thousand are detected every year, and while a small number are large enough to cause damage, the threat of a major one is very real.

Earthquakes cannot be stopped, but there is much we can do to protect ourselves, our families, and our property, Sherlock said. As with all hazards, we all must prepare to be self-sufficient in the event of a disaster.

‘Demystifying earthquakes — what this means to Langley’ is a first step. Led by Maiclaire Bolton, a PEP seismologist, the event will be held at the Murrayville fire hall, 22170 50 Ave., on Tuesday, May 6.

There will be two sessions, the first from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p .m., and the second from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Historically, B.C. has experienced one of the world’s largest earthquakes. British Columbia has been impacted by seven earthquakes with a magnitude of seven or greater in the past 100 years.

These “great” earthquakes like this are rare, occurring every few centuries, but damaging earthquakes can still occur relatively often, approximately once every few decades.

These more frequent earthquakes are of great concern as they can occur inland and closer to the urban centres of Vancouver and Victoria.

Students to Test 'Tsunami Shelters'

Their tsunami shelters are only made out of small wooden blocks and held together by toothpaste used for glue, but they also incorporate months of study with computer-aided design, learning about engineering principles, applying skills to real world problems and the simple ingenuity of hundreds of middle school students from Oregon coastal and rural areas. And now, it’s crunch time. Or maybe collapse time. This Thursday and Friday, about 350 students will travel to the Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory at Oregon State University to see how their one-fiftieth scale models stand up to real wave tests.

This “Tsunami Shelter Challenge” is part of a two-year effort to increase student science and technology skills, using issues that seem relevant – in this case, building a vertical-escape tsunami shelter that could help save lives if such an event hit the Pacific Northwest.

“These students have worked the past year learning about tsunami science, the engineering of structures, and how computational modeling is used to design and test structures,” said Rozeanne Steckler, creator of the project and director of the Northwest Alliance for Computational Science and Engineering at OSU.

“They then used a custom-built tsunami shelter simulator to design and test their structures on a computer,” she added. “Now in the wave basin we’re going to simulate waves that would mimic the 2004 East Asian tsunami. And the big question is: Which structures will be left standing?”

Working in small teams, the students learned about how tsunamis and storm surges happen, the forces they generate, and the types of structural design it would take to withstand them. Testing of their creations will take place in OSU’s Tsunami Wave Basin, the largest facility of its type in the world.

A vertical-escape shelter tries to save lives by helping people get above, rather than away from an incoming wave, in the very short time frame of a few minutes that may be available. The structure needs to be high enough to be above the wave, and strong enough not to collapse from its forces. Most of the Pacific Northwest is now believed to be vulnerable to potentially devastating tsunamis, due mostly to potential future massive earthquakes on the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

The initiative has been funded in part by a $75,000 grant from Symantec Corporation, as part of a corporate goal to encourage more young students to pursue careers in science and technology. It included support for Oregon teachers to be trained with the program, and encourage gender equity in its implementation.

Two Contrasting Models of Lithospheric Structure

The subduction of the Juan de Fuca plate beneath North America changes markedly along the length of the subduction zone, notably in the angle of subduction, distribution of earthquakes, volcanism, geologic and seismic structure of the upper plate, and regional horizontal stress. To investigate these characteristics, we conducted detailed density modeling experiments of the crust and mantle along two transects across the Cascadia subduction zone. One crosses Vancouver Island and the Canadian margin, and the other crosses the margin of central Oregon. Both density models were constructed independently to a depth of approximately 50 km. We gathered all possible geologic, geophysical, and borehole data to constrain the density calculations. The final densities for the Oregon and Vancouver lithosphere models were obtained from gravity inversions.

Our results confirm that the downgoing slab of the Cascadia subduction zone dips significantly steeper beneath Oregon than beneath Vancouver Island, lending support to the idea that the Juan de Fuca plate is segmented from north to south. In addition, our gravity models indicate that the mantle wedge beneath western Oregon (i.e., below the western Cascades) is lighter than the mantle beneath the Canadian continental crust. This low density agrees with the low mantle velocities observed in the mantle and the present day extensional regime of the Pacific Northwest.

A gravity low at the deformation front of the Oregon margin, absent along the Vancouver margin, can be explained by the different bathymetry of the two regions and by the depth to the top of the subducting Juan de Fuca plate. If the accretionary prisms along these profiles were modeled with equal densities, a density inhomogeneity in the lower part of the models would be necessary. Thus that the density of the accretionary prism for the Vancouver profile must be approximately 0.1-0.2 g/cm³ greater than that for Oregon. A density difference within the accretionary prisms also agrees with other data. We note that the volume of accreted sediments is approximately twice as large along the Vancouver profile than along the Oregon profile, and the prism reaches a greater depth (approximately 20 km as compared with 12 km for the Oregon profile). This implies that the sediments within the accretionary prism at Vancouver Island are at a higher metamorphic grade, and therefore have higher densities.

We find that a substantial part of the coastal gravity maxima for both lines is caused by increasing density with depth in the subducting plate. In the proposed model, the maximum possible density of the slab was used to satisfy constraints for the average density of the near coastal crust for both profiles. If a density increase with depth is not introduced into the model, very high densities would be required for the near surface coastal and continental crustal blocks.

Cascadia Subduction Zone Is The Cause!

My friend Robert Somerville calls my attention to an article in the NewScientistEnvironment that says the San Andreas fault is a victim. It's the Cascadia Subduction Zone's fault.

Chris Goldfinger and colleagues at Oregon State University, Corvallis, analysed sediment records from deep sea canyons that stretched back over the last three thousand years, looking for the disturbed strata that are the hallmarks of big earthquakes.

They found evidence that "...the massive Cascadia quakes – eight of which Goldfinger estimates exceeded magnitude 9.0 on the Richter scale – trigger events that top out around magnitude 7.9 along the San Andreas by stress transfer."

Their evidence also suggests that the Cascadia is 90 years overdue for a "big one".

"In answer to your question: Yep- big time earlier- headache, nausea. Took some head med,
it knocked it down a bit. I was at work this evening when it hit me pretty hard, and yes , the neck thing,
etc. This kinda headache is for west coast or US mainland quake. But as you may already know,
we're having a slow slip quake PNW which began Mar 2 thereabouts. Don't think it's over and the
other part of headache was for North pole storms/quake into PNW and Europe side. And I have been
off balance for a month now. This for me is unusual- it began just prior to the Baja swarms and Nevada
6.0 plus all the aftershocks. I got a word from my guide that the whole western side of USA going to
come unglued. That was about a week ago. Thanks

Former Prime Minister Paul Martin is too ashamed to show face in Parliament because of role in North American Union agenda

Paul Martin needs to confess to Canadians about his role in a neo-colonial initative of the U.S. Bush administration to take-over Canada.

In the article titled "Martin should resign as MP, Layton says" by Elizabeth Thompson, that was published in the Montreal Gazette on 2 April 2008 "New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton, is calling on former Prime Minister Paul Martin to resign as a member of Parliament, saying residents of LaSalle-Émard deserve an MP who is going to actually show up in the House of Commons." But there is an apparent basic explanation why Paul Martin has not been in Parliament. If you were an Member of Parliament or even more so, a former Prime Minister, who signed an Agreement to sell out your country, without informing that nation, and if you felt guilty about it afterwards, how would you feel, after that, about taking your seat in Parliament? You would probably seek to stay as far away as possible from re-taking your seat in Parliament, and would busy yourself, as much as possible, with other issues that by help soothe your conscience. Indeed, this is exactly, what Mr. Martin seems to be doing.

Dozens injured as floor collapses at Christian rock concert in Abbotsford

Stage scaffolding fell and knocked approximately 70 people through the floor and into the basement at a crowded Christian rock concert in an Abbotsford, B.C. church on Friday night.

Thirty-two people were injured and treated at Central Heights Church by ambulance, police and fire personnel from several Fraser Valley communities. Twenty-two of them had to be taken by ambulance to hospital, said Const. Casey Vinet of the Abbotsford Police. Three were seriously injured, although Vinet did not know their ages or conditions.

"This was a rock concert and it was attended mostly by youth," Vinet said.

About 1,000 people from around the Lower Mainland and Washington were enjoying the concert by Christian rock band Starfield when light fixtures and scaffolding above the stage crashed down at 9:17 p.m. It landed on a crowd of people dancing in front of the stage and knocked them approximately 12-15 feet through the floor to the basement below.

Alyx Peckinpaugh, 13, was distraught and crying after narrowly averting the fall.

"People were jumping and I started to jump," she said. She then saw a security guard gesturing and all of a sudden the floor gave way. "I ran to the wall and yelled for my friend. I couldn't find her, and then I saw her. I ran out to the hallway and then outside."

Groups of people, including parents of youth who attended the show, huddled outside the church crying and praying after the incident, as the injured were treated and rushed to hospitals in Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Langley.

"Most of the injured were walking wounded, but some were taken away in stretchers," said Chris Douglas, senior pastor of Central Heights Church.

Ryan Collum and Troy Grenier were at the chaotic scene trying to locate a friend who had been inside.

"We had a friend at the concert," Collum said. "We're really worried about her. We don't know where she is."

Lorin Bergen, pastor of Living Hope Church in Surrey, said four youths from his church were in hospital, one with a suspected broken arm and another with a gouged hand.

"We're just very thankful," Bergen said. "It could have been so much worse."

The concert wasn't organized by the church, said Douglas. Rather, the band's management had rented it out and sold their own tickets. Members of Starfield were aboard their tour bus outside but did not have any comment.

Vinet said the police's forensic identification team was going over the scene.

"Everything that can be done will be done to determine the cause," he said.

After the incident, first-hand accounts began appearing on Starfield's Facebook page. The following was posted by "Elwin" to the "Fan Wall" message board:

We were in the last row of the pews the crashed to the basement. We have bruising and lots of aches. Our pew landed on top of others with people underneath. Pray for them all.

I was there. Fortunately, my young sons and I arrived late and were in the balcony.

I pray for the band. I pray that they are not too shaken by the event. That those who were injured (and their parents) will heal quickly, and will not launch lawsuits against the band or the church. I pray for the congregation of Central Heights that they will be able to worship on Sunday and not be disrupted during the reconstruction.

When I went down to help with the trussing (I'm a former volunteer roadie) I saw that there was one woman who had fallen. She was lying face down, just to (audience) right of centre stage. She was unconscious and convulsing. I called 911 but couldn't get a line. This was at 9:18. I checked back after we realized that the horizontal lighting truss wasn't going to fall into the hole. She was lying on her back. I couldn't tell if she was OK or not. If anyone knows who she was or her condition, please update.

Guys from Starfield. I want to encourage you through what could be a tragedy. The guys from Shane and Shane talked about fires but that God was with Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego. He will be with you through this. He will be with those who were injured as well.

McElhanney Completes Clean Sweep of 2007 Transportation Awards

At the 2007 Consulting Engineers of BC Annual Awards on March 3rd, McElhanney received the Award of Excellence for design of the Mount Lehman Interchange, on the Trans-Canada Highway in Abbotsford. This was the top award out of 11 high quality submissions in the Transportation Category.

Coming less than a month after our two wins at the Ministry of Transportation Awards in February, this means that McElhanney has won all the first places in transportation design and construction in BC in 2007. This is an outstanding achievement that sets the bar as high as it can go.
