ADOPT A LIBERAL, END THE WAR
Over 80% of Canadians are opposed to extending the war in Afghanistan beyond
2009. For some time the official position of the Liberal Party has been that
the mission in Afghanistan should end in 2009. And yet, this Thursday, when
Parliament votes on whether to extend Canada's troop deployment to 2011, the
Liberal Members of Parliament are likely to either vote in favour of the
motion, abstain, or not even show up, as has happened frequently over the
last several months. The Canadian Peace Alliance has collected thousands of
signatures in recent days to underline this point. But Stephane Dion and the
Liberals won't return our phone calls.
The antiwar movement even confronted Stephane Dion in Toronto to call on him
to oppose extending the war. The response was silence. Not even a witty
rejoinder. When mainstream media asked why Dion hadn't addressed the
concerns of the "well-reasoned protesters", he had nothing to say and left

However, there are a large number of Liberal MPs (including Mr. Dion) who,
in 2006, voted against even extending the mission to 2009 (beyond the
original end date of 2007). The list is included here with Ottawa and
constituency phone numbers, and those with critic's duties are listed first.
These MPs voted to stop the war being extended to 2009, and there is no
reason they should support extending it to 2011. Call them now (all of them
if you can, but ideally pick a few and call them frequently). We need to
flood their voicemail and email over the next two days. Tell them: Don't

I was asked to post this and here it is. Although I myself have a housing mess here in Toronto (being forced to live in mold and with toxic carpetting), I am buying a phone card and gonna call these offices UP!
Hope you do, too. The last time I got on the horn about NOLA, big time, was when they shut down the only soup kitchen. And you know, that phone campaign worked!! It was run by Afghan/Irak veterans but the city of NOLA wanted them OUT.
It would be a great Xmas present to see this initiative succeed.

Next Monday, Dec. 10, is international Human Rights Day. It's also the day when activists in New Orleans are calling for actions opposing the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to tear down more than 4,600 public housing units in four complexes across the city -- while replacing them with private, mixed-income developments that will set aside only 744 apartments for low-income people.
The decision to demolish these public complexes, which suffered only relatively minor damage [PDF] during Hurricane Katrina, comes as rents across the city have doubled since the storm -- as has the homeless population.The activists are asking concerned citizens across the country to join the actions in New Orleans or to take action at home. According to a statement from Kali Akuno, director of the Stop the Demolition Coalition:
What is at stake with the demolition of public housing in New Orleans is more than just the loss of housing units: it destroys any possibility for affordable housing in New Orleans for the foreseeable future. Without access to affordable housing, thousands of working class New Orleanians will be denied their human right to return.
Although this situation is unique and urgent in the city of New Orleans, it does not occur in isolation. The plans for redevelopment here are part of a national assault on public housing, in which tens of thousands of homes have been demolished in the past decade.Organizers are asking supporters from across the country to organize demonstrations at local HUD offices and other government buildings. They are also asking them to make calls to government officials demanding the reopening of public housing in New Orleans. Among those leaders they are asking people to call:
* New Orleans City Council Member Stacy Head, who has been a leading force in pushing for the tear-downs. Her number is 504-658-1020.

For several months, I have been watching certain political yahoogroups for candidates for CONgress. Most of the people running i would not work nor vote for.
However, I noticed that someone from Nancy Pelosk's office was posting quite regularly to some of them. very very neutral stuff. Then the Administration went after Pelosi for wearing a headscarf in Iraq, and the gloves came off!
Someone was also during this time forwarding certain RANTS I was writing to her her office. Wondered why someone would do that. I would also get a return email saying I would ONLY get a reply if I was a member of her District. Well, I am not a member of any District, folks.

Strategically there has been a sudden flip reversal of conditions - a
shift of 180 degrees.

Bush STUPIDLY vetoed the
spending bill which would have enabled him to continue the war and
figure out ways to cheat on the limits (there were some loopholes big
enough to drive a full armored division through). BUT HE VETOED his own
capability to continue his farce. Nixon would have been tricky enough
to accept the bill and find ways to bullshit around the limits. But
Bush has lost many of his tricky advisers.
AT THIS POINT ALL THE DEMOS NEED TO DO TO STOP THE TRAGEDY IN IRAQ IS
STAND FIRM WITH STIFF UPPER LIPS, ARMS FOLDED, AND DO NOTHING. When
Bush pleads for money, all the Demos have to do is tell Bush to accept
the congressional mandate of a scheduled withdrawal and the troops can
have all the funds they need to accomplish an orderly withdrawal. No
compromises should be made.
Bush will have a hard time licking on his own self-imposed wounds. Both
Cheney and Bush are likely to look, act, and seem even more demented
that before. This will add fire for the rapidly growing sentiment to be
done entirely with these two.
SUCCEEDS OR NOT,
IS AN ELEGANT BULLDOZER
FOR FORCING THE SHIFT.
Tell Pelosi, because she will become President if Bush and Cheney are
impeached, that she cannot personally make a sound judgment call on
whether to proceed to allow impeachment on the agenda, thus she should
delegate the decision to a small committee of Congressional democrats.
