A meteorite which ploughed into the Peruvian countryside last year should have shattered and dispersed long before reaching the ground. That is the conclusion of scientists who have been examining samples of the space rock and the 15m-wide crater it dug out in Carancas last September. The discovery of a water-filled hole, following reports of a fireball in the sky, made headlines around the world.Now experts say the event challenges conventional theories about meteorites. This has nothing to do with the mass panic that famously followed the impact; rather it has to do with the science of space impacts. Usually, only meteorites made of metal survive the passage through Earth's atmosphere sufficiently intact to scoop out a crater. But the object which came down in the Puno region of Peru was a relatively fragile stony meteorite. During the fiery descent through Earth's atmosphere, these are thought to fragment into smaller pieces which then scatter over a wide area. Yet pieces of the estimated 1m-wide meteorite are thought to have stayed together during entry, hitting the ground as one. Source : BBC Science

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- A meteor flashed across the Northwest sky early Thursday, setting off booms that stunned witnesses.

Witnesses along a 60-mile swath of the Puget Sound region from the Tacoma area to Whidbey Island and as far as 260 miles to the east said the sky lit up brilliantly, and many reported booms as if from one or more explosions.

"It made a pretty big bang," said Petty Officer Andrew Davis at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, 40 miles north of Seattle.

Toby Smith, a University of Washington astronomy lecturer who specializes in meteorites, said the skybursts were reported over a wide area around 2:40 a.m.

Bright flashes and sharp booms were reported in the skies over Western Washington. Viewers from Lakewood to Camano Island called KIRO 7 Eyewitness News, saying they were awakened by light or the booms.

Witnesses along a 60-mile swath of the Puget Sound region from the Tacoma area to Whidbey Island and as far as 260 miles to the east said the sky lit up brilliantly, and many reported booms as if from one or more explosions.


Civilian pilots reported seeing the flash from Ellensburg, east of the Cascade Range, said an FAA duty officer who did not give her name.

At Whidbey Island Naval Air Station about 40 miles north of Seattle, Petty Officer Andrew Davis said he and others saw the skyburst.

"It made a pretty big bang," Davis said. "We thought it could maybe be a meteorite or something."

In Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, about 260 miles to the east, **** Haugen said he was driving to work at KVNI Radio when he saw a flash that he took to be lightning about 2:40 a.m. -- then learned there were no lightning storms anywhere in the region.

Ralph Gaume, head of astronometry at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., said he knew of no likely source from outer space, such as a passing comet or meteor cluster or shower, but added that meteors commonly appear at random.

A Horizon Airlines pilot reported seeing the meteor hit Earth with a flash and a burst of light near Highway 26 and the Lind-Hatton Road in the southeast corner of Adams County about 5:25 a.m., said Mike Fergus, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman in Seattle.

I used to live in Othello, and Moses Lake for years. This location should be just past the little town of Royal City, Wa. If it's something they don't want the public to know about, what a perfect coruppt county to have this object land in. Mason/Mormon OPD ( othello Police ) I don't call it otHELLo ( Hell ) for nothing.

Meteor provides early-morning celestial display for Pacific Northwest residents

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - A meteor that blazed across the darkened early-morning sky above the western United States was also clearly visible on the Canadian side of the border.

A Kamloops, B.C., man, who identified himself only as Doug, says he was driving south of the city when he saw a blazing ball that appeared to have hit the ground because it illuminated the entire horizon.

Another Kamloops man, Gerald Haggerty, says the horizon lit up like a bomb.

A Federal Aviation Administration duty officer in Seattle told The Associated Press the streaking meteor was reported by pilots from Boise, Idaho west to Washington State.

A Horizon Airlines pilot reported seeing the meteorite hit the ground with a flash and a burst of light near State Route 26, about 280 kilometres east-southeast of Seattle.

Sheriff's dispatchers said they had no reports of damage or injuries from the reported meteorite strike around 5:45 a.m. local time. They said one caller from Walla Walla, about 90 kilometres south-southeast of the reported impact site, said she heard a sonic boom and felt a shock wave not long after seeing the streaking meteor.
