OH, NO!
Eli Lilly's latest scam.

tas: , , , , ,

This is posted on a GREAT BLOG.

Did you hear that Eli Lilly, the company that was caught in a big
kerfuffle (read: had at least one 690 million dollar "settlement" and is being sued by various US States - cases against them in other countries) over Zyprexa (Olanzapine), recently released

an antidepressant for dogs? (Lady B says: emphasis mine).

The product, called Reconcile (fluoxetine hydrochloride), is a
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that is prescribed for
dogs that suffer separation anxiety. It is prescribed on a
dose-to-weight basis for use in conjunction with behavior modification
training to help ease anxiety in dogs that become stressed-out when
their owners leave them behind to go to work or for other reasons. (Okay, boyz and grrls, we are dealing with Eli Lilly. I believe that they have Reason Makers - experience with Zyprexa seems to indicate this ... and sometimes the "reasons" are really DANGEROUS, like giving them to children ... sure build$ up them profit$, though)

Lilly research shows that 10.7 million, or up to 17 percent of U.S. dogs(1)
suffer from separation anxiety," said Steve Connell, D.V.M., manager of
technical, academic and consumer services for companion animal health
at Lilly. "We're thrilled that our first product for dogs can help
restore the human-pet bond, which can be compromised when dogs suffer
from separation anxiety." (Just wait. All sorts of dawgz are going to turn up NEEDING this drug.)

Reconcile is a chewable flavored tablet that is proven safe for dogs and puppies 6 months or older. (and aint that sweet? We used to wrap our dog's meds in some ground beef .. she would 'wolf" it right down! But it just might make it a reason to charge lots more ca$h per pill to have them in dog-friendly flavors.)

In field studies of approximately 600 dogs, 73 percent of dogs that
were receiving Reconcile showed improvement in separation
anxiety-related behavior within eight weeks when compared with dogs
receiving behavior modification training alone. Within one week of
starting Reconcile(TM) treatment and behavior modification training, 42
percent of dogs showed improvement. During trials, the most common
adverse reactions to Reconcile were calm or lethargy, reduced appetite,
vomiting, shaking, diarrhea, restlessness, excessive vocalization,
aggression and -- in infrequent cases -- seizures. [story]

Considering that the Chinese tainted pet food intended for American and
Canadian pets, I wonder what they think of Americans and their pets
now?

V's RANT

Oh, my DOG! I mean God!!

Eli Lilly has NO shame, no ethics, no credibility whatsoever.

I find it signficant that I am reading this the week after all the stories about the VTech murderer and his profound usage of SSRI's.

Zyprexa IS a killer drug. It is an atypical antipsychotic THAT has been shown to be peddled by liars. They said it worked BETTER than the others. Guess what!?? It simply wasn't true.

Now, since the flashlight of truth has been shone upon the zyprexa shadows, we know that Mssrs. Eli Lilly & Co. are not always beacons of medical truth.

I knew that it was prescribed to my son who had drug psychosis. (DO NOT get me started on the dangers of MDMA and pushing one's consciousness where it should not be going.)

He was "labelled" paranoid schizophrenic.

I tried valiantly to keep him off it.
I tried valiantly to GET HIM OFF IT.

He is 22 and last July he had a STROKE.

I was prepared for the diabetes and pancreatitis (one develops the latter as the body fights to NOT get the diabetes. This phenomena makes it EXTREMELY difficult for a health practioner to detect the dangers to come, as the danger signals for diabetes do not show up in time to prevent it) .. but a STROKE?

At 22.

The fight against Eli Lilly has not come to the courts here in Canada YET, but the of counsel lawyer is the man who beat the Red Cross during the tainted blood scandal and the court battle should be a jolting media "ride". With this new dawg "medicine" Rover will be looking out the back window for the "dog catcher".

Back to DAWGS .. I have seen separation anxiety in dogs.

I HAD a Rhodesian Ridgeback. This is a breed that is not only INTENSE to the 10th power, BUT has separation anxiety so badly that there are rescue organizations dedicated to rescuing them. Yup.

The SPCA (where I got her) told me she was a Golden Retriever mix. Yeah, right. They said she was at the facility as the owners had a baby and they couldn't keep her any more. The dog had never had clicker training (btw, folks, this is what they mean by "behavior modification") which is essential for a dog that was BREED to be that agressive. Ridgeback is a mix of nine breeds to produce a lion hunting dog, who will not KILL the lion, simply corner it so that The Great White Hunter can go in for the KILL.)

I could not understand her ways. Love didn't seem to be an essential part of her personality; but being territorial certainly wuz. Being aggressive with other dogs certainly wuz. Being absolutely demanding certainly wuz.

So her seperation "anxiety" got really bad without the folks she had previously "bonded" with in her previous home. She was in FULL SCALE GRIEF, and I surely do not blame her.

These are some of the world's strongest dogs and she needed TONS Of exercise and freedom to roam; things I could not give her. Probably out in the suburbs she could fit her traits to that environment.

She began to nip at me as the days passed AND she took over all the furniture. You cannot fight a Ridgeback. I am disabled and couldn't sleep in my bed, sit in one of OWN chairs, or have even a 6" space on my sofa. Eventually I took the dog back to the animal shelter after I got SCARS from her biting me when I sat down on my own sofa.

She was put in quarantine and behavior modified for several months before they tried to let her be adopted again. (Poor ole Daisy! I am SO sorry .. but I did have to bring you back. How do I know what happened to you ...? I kept track of you on the shelter's website.)

Now, the POINT is - what would happen -- SHOULD Daisy be put on SSRI's? I'll bet she was damned mad being kept in cage except for a brief walk daily.

Note the side effect you have just sort of SKIPPED over - AGGRESSION. This is far likely to cause more problems than seizures, actually. Really really damaging for the dawg to be punished for what is a natural reaction to an ABNORMAL situation. What we are looking at here is post traumatic stress disorder (the dog lost its best friends and protectors) ... it is NOT depression.

But what do you think Daisy's chances of being put on Reconcile, had the drug been available back then ..?

I would say 100%. Why?

Because Eli Lily is totally unethical about selling drugs to organizations and to public care facilities. Several states have sued over this (Mississippi is a case in point) connection between diabetes and zyprexa. THEY have been picking up the tab for treatment of those who developed diabates on zyprexa and WANT THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THE TREATMENTS coming from the corporation that did the damage. But these States paid for all the zyprexa!! @ about $6 per pill X the no. of people taking them X the number of months they were on them ...

Who makes the pills for diabetes treatment .. why Eli Lily OF COURSE.

I refer any one reading this to Newstarget, an excellent anti Big Pharma blog by Mike Adams. It's an eye opener. My blog has several articles (in the main not written by me but just reposts) about BIG PHARMA.

I am angry enuf about pharmocorporate acculturation in our society, without now having to worry about the canine population being drug to death and seizure land.

If you go to www.ladybroadoak.blogspot.com -- just run a blog search on Big Pharma or zyprexa (teen screen articles are interesting, too) and although I wasn't using links back then, you will surely see a picture emerge of a corporation that is truly not helpful to living things. You will see how VIVA ZYPREXA was a way to reward pill pushers from Lilly who came up with new and unique ways to prescribe the drug (bipolar, dementia, depression, you name it) as well as to provide "incentives" for medical professionals to prescribe it. This tidbit of terror-ifying pill pushing took MONTHS to uncover.

And, btw, it is interesting to note who is on and/or has been on the Board of Directors of Eli Lilly. Why isn't that George H. Bush ... at one point? And there a few others who are still making a financial killing with their stock ..? (It is at least rumored that Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have huge stakes in the pharma shares.)

This corporations profits remain startling stable despite the rapid decline of zyprexa prescriptions .. why? They are just higher/double dosing those who are still unfortunately on it ...

NOTE: The real public awareness about Zyprexa only surfaced when NYT ran a series on diabetes. Everyone they interviewed was on some form of SSRI or atypical antipsychotic. A few of us pointed it out when we read about it. We KNEW the reason they were overweight, bloated, lethargic, etc and talked about in the comments LONG AND LOUD. We bloggers, we made the mainstream media STAND UP AND BE NOTICING REAL "NEWS". Be sure to go to OpEd news and check out the many fine and truth telling articles by Evelyln Pringle. (And also, remember Daniel Hazard who went to the web with his own story ... I wonder if either of them has a dawg ....)

Compact Florsecent Light Bulb and MERCURY!!

It is (extremely) important to know that Compact Florescent Light bulbs contain mercury and should be disposed of properly.

Here is a link to more information:

This links is to energy star's info.

Here is a link to more information:

Now let's look at this new CASH COW!!

Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) - newer, highly
efficient lamps that screw into existing light bulb sockets
(in most cases) and resemble traditional bulbs in
appearance rather than the tubular style of regular
fluorescent lamps.

Fluorescent lamp - a tubular electric lamp having a
coating of fluorescent material on its inner surface
and containing vapor whose bombardment by electrons
from the cathode provides ultraviolet light that
causes the material to emit visible light.

High Intensity Discharge lighting (HID) - formerly
outdoor or special use lights that now are being produced
for indoor use; HID greatly increases the
amount of light produced.

Incandescent lamp - an electric lamp in which a filament
gives off light when heated to incandescence
by an electric current (incandescence means white,
glowing, or luminous with intense heat).

Lamp - "light bulb"

Lumen - a unit of luminous flux equal to the light
emitted in a unit solid angle by a uniform point source
of one candle intensity.

Restrike Time - the time it takes for a lamp to reach
full brightness when the lamp is first turned on; or if
the lamp is burning, the time it takes for the lamp to
restrike when power is switched off and then back on.

The article above discusses the Australian phenomenae and Ontario's TIME LINE!!

View Article Ontario to ban old Edison bulbs
by Tyler on Wed 18 Apr 2007 02:28 PM EDT
Well, California made noise about it, Australia got the ball rolling, now Ontario is jumping in with its own ban on inefficient incandescent bulbs. This makes Ontario the first jurisdiction in North America to commit to a ban, though unlike the Australian target of 2010, Ontario's regulation won't kick in until 2012. The province has also been careful with its wording. It's not banning incandescent bulbs. Rather, it plans to ban inefficient lighting technology that would include current incandescent bulbs. It left the door open to innovation with regards to incandescent technology. No doubt, the government wanted to be sensitive to General Electric, which claims it is working on an incandescent bulb that will be just as efficient as compact fluorscent lights and which contain zero mercury. One could argue the Ontario ban should match Australia's timeline, but I think the fact that the province has drawn a line in the sand will have an enormous impact. It will be interesting to see how many other provinces and states follow
.

Some (excellent) posts I read on a yahoo!group!!

Martin says,

Consumers in dark over risks of new light bulbs

The problem is that they are trying to "guilt" us into believing the hype
about "good for the environment". It is B.S! Why is it that the citizen has
to always pay in the end for industries mistakes? They stand to make
billions but it is us, the consumer, that will pay the extra cost of the
cleanup. I won't use the new bulbs in the house but do have some outside. I
am trying them out. But as far as I can tell, they still burn out maybe last
a little longer but are the health risks worth it? Do we always accept the
government's assumptions that they are "safe"? There is a new cow hormone on
the horizon that is not safe for people but the cattle feed lots are going
to start using it. We are the guinea pigs alright! We had better wake up
quick around here before corporate amerika owns us!!

Your reasoning rings true, often the legislature doesn't fully think about
how things will work or turn out before they pass laws. Although the bulbs
have worked well for me, you have me thinking about what to do with them
when they do burn out. And regardless of how well they work or don't work,
the government has no business telling people what bulbs to use in their
homes. What's next? we can only use Dial soap or Tide detergent?

Virginia Comments: I just bought 2 of these "wonder" bulbs for the first time. I felt pious and virtuous. But the thing is - everything I own is secondhand!! So an occupational therapist goes to visit and sees the first bulb. I have no shade on the lamp so she can see the bulb. What does she say ...?

WATCH OUT!! These bulbs can blow up if the energy standard of the lamp is not correct.

I began to have visualizations of me turning on my lamp, my bulb blowing up, the glass shattering into pieces tearing holes in my lovely face, and deadening my body by the ingestion of MERCURY.

Forget so-called efficiency ...

On Russian economics

very interesting stuff ..

If you dont' go to the link, let me at least mention that this ran in the Globe & Mail's Report on Business; There is NO anti-Soviet nor anti-Russian "tone" to it.

I highly recommend it. The book in bold below, sounds like a GREAT read.

V

Tax reform, not oil, fuelled Russia's revival

Richard H.K. Vietor teaches business and political economy at Harvard Business School. In his new book, How Countries Compete: Strategy, Structure and Government in the Global Economy,

Professor Vietor says Boris Yeltsin, first president of post-Marxist
Russia and tragicomic free-market reformer, got double-crossed by
Viktor Gerashchenko, the chairman of Russia's central bank.

When Mr. Yeltsin abruptly lifted price controls on 90 per cent of

all consumer goods in 1992, he says, the central bank needed to limit
the growth in money supply immediately - or risk runaway inflation. It
cranked up the printing presses instead.

*snip*

Russia's murder rate tripled in five years, making the country the

second most homicidal in the world (after South Africa). Amid this
anarchy, alcoholism rates soared - as did HIV/AIDS rates. The Russian
mafia acquired a kind of authority akin to the sovereign authority of
governments. Close to national bankruptcy, Russia defaulted on its
domestic debt. Mr. Yeltsin took an emergency $10-billion (U.S.) loan
from the International Monetary Fund - from the West.

To finance the residual operations of government, Mr. Yeltsin sold

off Russia's state-owned corporations at corrupt auctions - the process
by which Mikhail Khodorkovsky acquired Yukos, Russia's biggest oil
company, for $309-million; even in the 1990s, long before the rise in
oil prices, it was worth more than $15-billion
.
The auctions, all
together, yielded Mr. Yeltsin a mere $800-million "in exchange for
priceless assets." But he came not to care. In the end, Professor
Vietor says, he would be satisfied with the complete, irreversible
destruction of the Soviet economy.

In the past few years, Russia's economic success has been explained

away as a consequence of high oil prices.

*snip*

Since 2000, according to a Deutsche Bank report, Russia's GDP will
have increased sixfold in real, inflation-adjusted dollars by the end
of this year - from $1,334 per capita to $8,350.

*snip*

evertheless, Professor Vietor says, "resource endowments" are hard to manage wherever they are. They drive "unwise government spending,"induce corruption and - in the long run - reduce economic growth. Oil wealth can be almost as dangerous, in other words, as a saboteur in thecentral bank or a despot in the presidential palace.

May 13--A Positive Demonstration of Our Own Commitment to Attaining a Better Future

Dear Souls who will stand together on May 13,

The
response to our call has now spread throughout the world. We will have
people standing throughout the world in groups ranging in sizes of one
to thousands. We are in awe of the possibilities for our future.

We
know from the kind and gentle wording of so many of the messages that
we have received that our sisters and brothers will be standing in
honor of the intent of the original call--a positive demonstration of our
commitment to do what we can individually and collectively to attain a
better future for our children, grandchildren and the seven generations
beyond. We are not asking that someone else make this future happen,
but rather acknowledging that we can create our future. We are not
protesting anything, but rather committing to our future.

Thank you, dear sisters and brothers, for standing with us and for honoring the intent of the call.

After May 13, What Next?

Many have begun asking what happens after we have stood together on May 13. What should we do next?

Our
hope is that the very act of gathering and standing together in silence
will inspire and energize all of us to take actions that will help
realize our dream of a better world for our children, grandchildren and
the seven generations beyond them.

The most important ideas for
what comes next will come from you. We hope that in the discussions
that follow your standing, you will develop ideas to share with all of
us. We are in the process of creating a page on the StandingWomen site
that will allow all of you to offer suggestions, tell us about existing
organizations and efforts, and that will permit connecting links to
occur by areas of interest.

We have great power to shape the
world to achieve our dreams. Individuals, in deciding how to spend
their time and where to donate their money, can have an enormous impact
on the world. For example, students from a school in the Bronx, P.S.
52, made up of some of the poorest kids in the area, after seeing the
water scarcity in a UN video hosted by rap star JayZ, got together
their pennies, dimes and nickels and raised over $2,000 to send to the
most drought affected villages.

In many countries we, as
individuals, through how we cast our votes, can help our elected
officials come to see that they are the guardians of our children's and
grandchildren's future and that every decision they make should be made
within this context.

In this internet age, we also can band
together collectively. We suggest that you look at the work of these
existing groups that already bring women together internationally to
change the world:

Women's Intercultural Network www.win-cawa.org

Gather the Women www.gatherthewomen.org

The Millionth Circle www.millionthcircle.org

Circle Connections http://www.circleconnections.com/

Peace X Peace www.peacexpeace.org

UNIFEM www.unifem/org

For U.S. women, we also recommend

U.S. Women Connect www.uswc.org

Stand Up and Vote http://www.standupandvote.org/partners.html

One.org

ONE (www.ONE.org).
ONE: The campaign to Make Poverty History is a coalition of over 2.4
million supporters and over 100 of the nation's most well-known and
respected non-profit, advocacy and humanitarian organizations. ONE is a
new effort by Americans to rally Americans--ONE by ONE--to fight the
emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty. ONE is students and
ministers, punk rockers and NASCAR moms, Americans of all beliefs and
backgrounds, united as ONE to help make poverty history.

In our work, we can be guided by quotes from Margaret Mead and Helen Keller:

"Never
doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change
the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever does."
Margaret Mead

"I
am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I
can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do."
Helen Keller

Wonderful Note from Sharon Mehdi, author of Great Silent Grandmother Gathering

Sharon
Mehdi, the author of The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering, sent us
this wonderful note that follows. We share it here with her permission.
She also sent us the superb poem by Margaret Robison that follows
Sharon's note. We share it her with Margaret's permission.

I want to tell you a story.

Last
summer during the Lebanon-Israeli altercation, a handful of us started
standing every morning from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in our beloved Lithia Park
here in Ashland. We continued standing until November. Three months.
Seven days a week. No matter what the weather. It was hard. Our backs
hurt and our bones ached.

As summer turned to fall and the
mornings got colder, we wore layer upon layer to try to keep warm.
Sometimes there were four or five of us, sometimes 18 or 20. At the end
of our stand each day, we joined hands in a circle and sang: "Peace is
flowing like a river/ flowing out from you and me/flowing out into the
desert/setting all the people free."

On a grand and global
scale, what we did was insignificant. But it was what we could do and
we were committed to it. Like the wonderful Helen Keller quote: "I am
only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can
do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do."

Perhaps
it didn't transform the world, but it transformed us. Our local
newspapers ran front page stories about us. Ours is a tourist town and
visitors took pictures of us standing. No signs, no banners. Just
standing. Sometimes they joined us. And sometimes they emailed friends
back home. One woman from your own state of Ohio wrote that she lived
on a farm and didn't have a park or a group of women to stand with, so
every morning she stood in her cornfield. She said she pretended all
the cornstalks were women standing with her. She wanted us to know she
was doing what she could.

You Ohio women have put so much energy
and creativity and hard work into the invitation to others of us,
around the world, to stand on May 13th. Your sincerity spoke to my
heart. That is the magic. Women from the heartland, inviting others to
stand at a certain moment on a certain day to save the world. The word
is spreading. Friend to friend. You are empowering women all over to
find their own way, their own park, their own cornfield.

The glory of your dream is that it is not organized. It is spontaneous and it is holy.

Love, Sharon

POEM

To Save the World by Margaret Robison

I sit still in my wheelchair

With my back straight, my head erect.

I breathe in the warm air of the room.

Out my window light from the full moon Shines on the dark water.

I breathe the warm air out.

This house is quiet tonight.

I too am quiet.

I breathe the warm air in.

On the mountain across the river a train passes

Howling its plaintive howl.

I breathe the warm air out.

The night is silent once again.

Light from the full moon shines on the dark water.

What did I do to save the world today?

I watched no news on TV.

I walked in no protest demonstrations.

I wrote no letters to Senators or Representatives.

I sat very still in my wheelchair a long time.

I held my back straight and my head erect.

I breathed in the warm air of this room.

I breathed out the warm air of my body.

And all the time,

I was smiling.

Kucinich Files Articles of Impeachment Against Cheney

By Joshua Holland, AlterNet. Posted April 25, 2007

Impeachment may be gathering steam in a way that the whispering ladies of the DC establishment can't stop. As John Nichols writes in The Nation:

When
Nancy Pelosi announced last fall that impeachment was "off the table,"
official Washington accepted that the primary avenue for holding
lawless Presidents to account had been closed off by the new Speaker of
the House. But the Republic's citizenry has not been so inclined ...
Outside Washington ... an "impeachment from below" movement is
gathering steam.

Someone mentioned Seeds

So
here I go again with a little teaching (I hope). There are 2 types of
seeds (well really there are more than that, but for basic garden
purposes we are focusing on 2 types) Hybrid seeds and open-pollinated
seeds.

If you plan to garden, do yourself a favor and make sure
you only buy open pollinated (the real expensive versions are known as
Heirloom) seed. here's a little info taken from http://www.primalseeds.org/hybrid.htm

Open-pollinated
varieties are the traditional varieties which have been grown and
selected for their desirable traits for millennia. They grow well
without high inputs because they have been selected under organic
conditions.

These varieties have better flavour, are hardier
and have more flexibility than hybrid varieties. Breeders cannot
manipulate complex characteristics such as flavour as easily as they
can size and shape.

These seeds are dynamic, that is they mutate and adapt to the local ecosystem, as opposed to modern hybrids, which are static.

What
that last line means is that if you plant & grow an open pollinated
seed in California & let some of your crop "grow to seed" for the
next planting, the plants will instinctively adjust themselves to your
area. Plants from CA are going to be different than plants from
Alabama, but you can save seed in both areas to plant the next crop.

You can't do that with hybrid seed. So don't buy it!!!

And
here's a tip for new gardeners - have your soil checked - a local
university or agri co-op will usually do the test for under $10 - many
do it for free & prepare your soil before planting food - this
means add the nutrients that you don't have enough of - can't have
nutritious food grown in soil with no nutrients.  You will find that
your plants are healthier & you will deal with less insect damage -
Insects usually do not attack healthy plants!!

A simple yet very
effective and non toxic bug b gone for your garden is - get this - a
soapy water spray!  Get one of those garden sprayers (like for
fertilizers) and put some mild dish soap in it (like ivory) and water
your plant after the sun has gone down - spray them real good & let
it dry - won't hurt the plant or the soil & the bugs hate it!

profiting from anyone's illness.

I am in transit to the Codex Committee on Food Labeling and Natural Solutions Foundation's

Comments end on April 30 (we MAY be able to submit for another
month, but that is not clear right now!)

As of this moment, 145,541people have submitted their comments on this over reach by the FD through our site!

Good, but not good enough!

We need to show the kind
of strength that we have on this issue.

The last time people got this angry, we got the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act (DSHEA,1994) which gave us back the right to take any supplements we desire since they are classified as food and therefore recognized as safe.

Clearly not everyone is happy about our strength!

But we need all the comments we can get right now.

Here is the link:

Use it and tell your circle

Post it to your chat groups.

some of it from well meaning people,
some not,
that says this is not important.

MEDIA RELEASE

Leaked document reveals bulk water exports to be discussed at continental integration talks

Ottawa

– The leaked document of a prominent Washington-based think tank
obtained by the Council of Canadians reveals that government officials
and business leaders from Canada, Mexico and the United States are
scheduled to discuss bulk water exports in a closed-door meeting at the
end of the month as part of a larger discussion on North American
integration.

Titled the “North American Future 2025 Project,”
the initiative being led by the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and
International Studies, the Conference Board of Canada and the Mexican
Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas calls for a series of
“closed-door meetings” on North American integration dealing with a
number of highly contentious issues including bulk water exports, a
joint security perimeter and a continental resource pact.

According to the document, a roundtable on the “Future of the North American
Environment,” is planned for Friday April 27 in Calgary, and will
discuss “water consumption, water transfers and artificial diversions
of bulk water” with the aim of achieving “joint optimum utilization of
the available water.”

"This is just the latest in a series of closed-door meetings that grant the business sector privileged access while shutting out the public,” says Maude Barlow, national
chairperson of the Council of Canadians. “The document is damning not
just because it outlines a process that lacks transparency and
accountability,” says Barlow, “but also because of what is being
discussed by governments and so-called corporate stakeholders.”

The document also reveals that “trilateral coordination of energy policy”
and the development of “North American security architecture” are being
discussed by high-level government officials from Canada, the U.S. and
Mexico.

The Council of Canadians is demanding that the
Canadian government cease all further participation in such talks on
North American integration until there is parliamentary debate and
meaningful public consultation on the issue

Efficiency Policy, Jevon’s Paradox, and the “Shadow” Rebound Effect
Posted by Prof. Goose on April 26, 2007 - 10:36am

Topic: Demand/Consumption

Tags: efficiency, Jevons' Paradox, rebound effect

This is a guest post by Jeff Vail.
Is the push for greater energy efficiency a good policy choice to address energy scarcity after Peak Oil? Here’s a bold answer: NO, at least not in a vacuum. Efficiency is not a standalone solution, but part of the much more complex problem of reducing total energy consumption that must address Jevon’s Paradox and the Rebound Effect.

Jevon’s Paradox tells us that when we increase the efficiency of the use of a resource, we initially decrease the demand for that resource, but that ultimately this lower demand reduces price, which causes a “rebound” of increasing demand. When applied specifically to energy efficiency, this is commonly referred to as the “Rebound Effect.”
Here’s a real-world example. Let’s magically double the average fuel economy of America’s cars and trucks. Gasoline demand would drop immediately by 50%. This would affect the supply-demand equilibrium of gasoline, reducing its price significantly. However, with dramatically lower gas prices, many people would choose to drive more than they had in the past—this is the “rebound,” where some of the energy savings provided by gains in efficiency are negated by the corresponding effect on energy prices. Clearly, a 50% drop in gas prices won’t result in the average American doubling their driving, as would be required to completely negate the efficiency gains in this scenario. Even if gas was free, there would be some limit to how much we would drive. So this “rebound effect” doesn’t negate the entirety of energy savings due to efficiency. Studies suggest that it erases perhaps 10%-30% of the gains.
If Jevon’s Paradox, via the “rebound effect,” only negates 10%-30% of gains from improved efficiency, then efficiency appears to be a very viable policy option to reduce energy consumption, right? Not so fast. Jevon’s Paradox and the Rebound Effect are models that create snapshots in time of the operation of a highly complex system—it is important that we approach this problem with the entire system in mind. Consider the cascading effects in the energy-consumer system: when you save energy because of improved efficiency, you also save money. What do you do with that money? Chances are that most or all of it is spent on goods and services, and that these reflect energy consumption in some form. Whether you spend your savings on a trip to Hawaii, a new coffee table, or merely a plastic bauble, that expenditure reflects energy consumption. The exact form of energy consumed, as well as the relative quantity of energy consumed compared to energy initially saved via an improvement in efficiency is difficult to quantify, but in aggregate these two may be roughly equal. This is the “shadow” rebound effect. The “direct” rebound effect—that is, the increase in consumption of the same energy resource through the same process that experiences an improvement in efficiency—may be only 10%-30%, but it is possible that the true rebound effect approaches 100% when this “shadow” is accounted for.
Does this mean that efficiency is an invalid policy choice? No: true conservation, the goal of efficiency policy, can be achieved, but this represents a far more challenging policy dilemma. It is relatively simple, for example, to legislate higher CAFE standards. But what happens with the money saved on gasoline? It is quite a policy challenge to ensure that the energy saved by CAFE changes doesn’t simply go to another use of energy. One solution—the one that I am proposing—is that monetary savings from efficiency legislation is offset by an energy tax that is then invested in a manner that minimizes its energy consumption. Options for this offset fund reducing existing spending deficits, encouraging social pressure for absolute conservation, or my personal choice, funding efforts to design for quality of life using less energy—what I have called the Design Imperative. But selling this policy combination—CAFE increases paired with gas tax increases, for example—is a much more difficult task.
My intent is not to discourage the push for energy efficiency—quite the opposite: energy efficiency is a key part of addressing the challenges posed by Peak Oil, but ONLY if it is paired with measures to address both the direct and shadow rebound effects. There are valid arguments to focus on efficiency first, because it takes time to develop the technologies that create efficient energy use. However, we must be careful not to present efficiency as a standalone panacea, but rather to spur debate of systemic solutions of which efficiency is a key part.

This is a prelude to corporatization,

And what is truly frightening is that these people meeting are not elected!!

The planned North American corridor is a corporation, NOT an elected assembly.

Counter-meeting in Calgary prepares citizens to oppose bulk water exports

CALGARY, April 25 /CNW Telbec/ - The Council of Canadians is holding an

"open-door" meeting in Calgary to discuss the looming threats to bulk water

posed by North American integration. The meeting will enable key civil society

actors and the general public to discuss and share concerns with the process

and content of closed-door meetings that the US Centre for Strategic and

International Studies (CSIS), the Conference Board of Canada and the Centro de

Investigacion y Docencia Economicas (CIDE) in Mexico will be hosting in

Calgary on April 26 & 27.

"The meetings organized by CSIS are the latest round of private meetings

taking place within the context of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of

North America (SPP), which has not been debated by the legislatures of the

three participating governments," says Maude Barlow, National Chairperson of

the Council of Canadians. "The big business community and corporate lobby

groups have been granted executive level access to the integration process. No

equivalent role has been granted to labour groups, civil society or even

Parliament in Canada."

The Council of Canadians obtained a leaked document revealing that bulk

water exports would be on the agenda at the private meetings where government

representatives and private sector actors from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico

will be congregating.

"I am concerned that the Canadian government would agree to participate

in a process where the dice is so heavily loaded in favour of U.S interests,

says Ralph Pentland, former Director of the Water Planning and Management

Branch of Environment Canada. "We have a Treaty (the Boundary Waters Treaty)

and an institution (the International Joint Commission) that enables us to

deal with our neighbours to the south as equals. We should use it."

Quebec-based Eau Secours is concerned North American integration will

result in the commodification of water. "We oppose the continentalization of

water for market purposes," says Danielle Julien, Chairperson of Eau Secours'

international committee.

The groups hope their counter-meeting will raise awareness about the

impacts of North American integration on natural resources and prepare

Canadians to oppose upcoming integration talks.

There will be many more links to this leaked story

(to be continued).

Now here is a lesson I learned while living in the UK. Since the National Health Service was DESIGNED to reward patients with SYMPTOMS, there was no rationale to keep people healthy.

I see the same phenomena here in Canada where the founding premises was the same. Fund looking at sickness rather than using preventative medicine.

Big Pharma has certainly learned how to take advantage of this problem over the past decades. So sad, really.

My dream is to PAY my doctor so much per year to keep me HEALTHY. If I do my part and take the suggestions, my doctor keeps the money. If I get SICK, my doctor would forgo getting paid. And don't get me wrong. I LOVE my doctor and wouldn't give her up for anything. But I'd like to pay her for all that care and attention , not for sessions for dispensing drugs.

BTW, sometimes simply drinking water to take those expensive 'scripts does MORE for your health then taking them expensive PILLS. Works wonders in herbology that you HAVE to take water to ingest most of the cures, eh what ...?

The healthcare system in America is in serious trouble.

The doctors are getting squeezed by insurance companies for profit, while the drug

companies hold out money and gifts. A large percentage of doctors are

ready to hang it up because they can not stand having insurance

companies be their master, but are too decent of a person to take the

drug companies handouts.

One of the biggest ripoff now happening is the rebranding of

grandfathered drugs. Drug companies are dusting off obsolete

medicines, giving them a new name and charging top dollar for the new

drug, where the drug which replaced it 50 years ago is cheaper and

more effectve, but does not command the same profit.

The only hope i see is if american healthcare system adopted the

medical homes model. Under this model, the local clinic takes charge

over patient care. Under this model, primary health care equates to

$500 per person or $1,500 per family.

Under insurance current insurance, there is no incentive for the

patient to become well.

With a $500 deductible, most people simply avoid going to the doctor.

I this case, the doctor receives no money and the patient stays sick.

Should a person meet their person $500 deduction, the doctor benefits

the more time you visit. As long as the patient does not get better,

the doctor can make more money. These are the doctors and the cases

where overpriced prescriptions come in. The greater the price of the

prescription, the less likely it is for a patient to use it, therefor

the more likely it will be that the patient will return.

In the medical homes model, the customer pays the $500 up front, which

places it in the doctors best interest to keep you healthy for the

year. Since the clinic is basically contracted to be open a fixed

number of days each week, with a predefined patient load, it really

doesn't matter taking in a very sick person as a new customer. If they

can make this person well again, he will stay as a customer.

The American academy of pediatrics was the group who founded the concept.

This link is from the american medical association.

http://www.ama- assn.org/ amednews/ 2007/04/09/ prsc0409. htm

Medical homes represents the capitalist version of socialized

medicine. Price is calculated based on expenses plus profit, divided

by the number of patients. Doctors don't need to expense each band

aide to each patient, but instead just need to keep track of how many

band aides were used in a year. Given this structure, cash patients

are always welcome.

http://www.goprivat edoctor.com/ home

Only when doctors are put in charge of primary care, rather than

faceless insurance companies, will the prescription drug problem get

straightened out. Right now, the doctors have no problem screwing the

insurance company with overpriced drugs, then get a kickback for being

part of a study of the patients who use the overpriced drug. The

doctors i know are good people, who just want to be a doctor. The

didn't spend 12 years in school to hire a staff of medical coders.

Dear Readers,
There are major developments today in the war on your health freedom and the actions of the FDA. Concerning the recent CAM Guidelines, the FDA has responded to public pressure and finally extended the deadline for public comments to May 29th. See the feature article below for full details on the FDA's attempts to slip this document under the radar and get it adopted before anyone noticed.
The second major development is described in a feature story by Byron Richards that reveals plans buried deep in the new "Food and Drug Administration Revitalization Act" that would put an FDA-controlled non-profit entity -- the Reagan-Udall Foundation -- squarely in the drug business, where it could enter into contracts with drug companies and earn revenues from the licensing of drugs.
This is a frightening development. When the people who regulate the drug industry become part of the industry itself, there's no limit to the harm and corruption that could ensue. I've always said that every government regulatory body eventually becomes an extension of the industry it claims to regulate, and this latest legislative effort clearly demonstrates that principle in action.

share. Breathless boosters at RedChip issued a "strong buy"
recommendation and predicted that within 18 months, the stock would
soar to as much as $18.70 per share. Really?

In fact, Left Behind Games' stock chart
looks like a ski slope. Not a gentle bunny hill, but a World Cup grand
slalom course, groomed for a world-beating downhill run. Today, you
could buy a share of Left Behind Games for a quarter -- with change
left over. On March 21, 2007, the stock closed at 18 cents a share.

Left Behind Games has sunk more than $27 million and four years into
the development and marketing of a game that has been critically panned by gamer blogs, who sneer at its bugginess and built-in spyware, and was boycotted by members of its target audience.

Although game sales have brought in some revenue, the stock has yet to earn a dime of profit, according to the latest quarterly report
of Left Behind Games, filed on February 20, 2007. And, according to the
quarterly report, "As of December 31, 2006... we had $698,763... of
deferred salaries due to our officers." Moreover, in December 2006 and
January 2007, a corporate officer made two interest-free loans,
totaling $23,000, to help the enterprise with "working capital." (folks: I think they are talking about crapitalI$M here.)

And the road ahead looks even bumpier. For example, the firm is
obligated to pay Bible publisher Tyndale House, by March 31, 2007, a
hefty $750,000 royalty payment for licensing the game, which is based
on the best-selling and profoundly bigoted Left Behind novels co-authored by Southern Baptist minister Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins.

These concerns are summarized, in wonky accounting language, in the
firm's Going Concern statement, found on page 21 of its quarterly
report:

As
of the three months ended December 31, 2006, we have started to
generate revenue, and through December 31, 2006 have incurred net
losses of $31,157,019 and had negative cash flows from operations of
$6,383,394 since our inception through December 31, 2006. Our ability
to continue as a going concern is dependent upon out ability to
generate profitable operations in the future and/or to obtain the
necessary financing to meet our obligations and repay our liabilities
arising from normal business operations when they come due. We plan to
continue to provide for our capital requirements by issuing additional
equity. No assurance can be given that additional capital will be
available when required or on terms acceptable to us. We also cannot
give assurance that we will achieve significant revenues in the future.
The outcome of these matters cannot be predicted at this time and there
are no assurances that if achieved, we will have sufficient funds to
execute our business plan or to generate positive operating results.

Our independent registered public accounting firm has previously
indicated in its report included with the Form 10-KSB filed in June
2006 that these matters, among others, raise substantial doubt about
our ability to continue as a going concern.

How have the mighty fallen?

One thing's for sure, spouts Left Behind Games CEO Troy Lyndon: It wasn't the fault of Talk to Action for breaking the story of the convert-or-die theology behind this videogame.

Mr. Lyndon has publicly proclaimed that the controversy has spurred
sales of the game. The controversy, Mr. Lyndon boasted to the Los Angeles Times, "has been great for the product."

So, if Mr. Lyndon is to be believed, if it hadn't been for the consumer boycott first called for by Talk to Action, and organized by CrossWalk America, the Beatitudes Society, Christian Alliance for Progress, The Center for Progressive Christianity, and Campaign to Defend the Constitution (DefCon), then the company would have sold far fewer copies of its sole product.

Yet Mr. Lyndon has not expressed gratitude (not a crumb) to these
bloggers and faith communities, to whom he claims to owe so much.

While Talk to Action
was the first to call for a consumer boycott of the product -- not
because of the level of violence, but because it makes a children's
game of hate literature
-- no one has called for the game to be
censored.
Rather, this blog and others, joined by both progressive and
conservative faith communities, have asked consumers to reflect on
whether they really want to buy a buggy, spyware-laden videogame that
teaches mass killing in the name of Christ, and that also lets children
switch sides and command the armies of the AntiChrist, unleashing
demons that feast on the bones of conservative Christians. (Wait:
before you say, That sounds like fun!, just know that the game is
programmed so that the AntiChrist can never win.)

If Left Behind Games fails, it won't be because the stock price got
blogged down. It will be because they made a crappy, hate-filled
product that managed to offend its two target audiences: Rapture-ready
Moms and hardcore gamers. As SapphireGrl
wrote on RaptureReady.com, ""Where in the Word does it say to 'kill the
infidels'? Where are we told to kill anyone that won't convert? Jesus
said to shake the dust from your feet, not to mow them down with
automatic weapons!" And as Gameinatrix Cori
wrote in a smash-mouth review by a gamer who had really wanted to like
the game but found that it stank out loud: "Let's just leave this
behind us and never speak of it again."

* * *

And let us not forget, the more publicity this game got, the more it sold. Sad to think that Mssr. Lyndon laffed his was to the bank ...

As the Mom of a gamer, just what STRATEGY is this "game" based on. Without it the games are just NO FUN.

And as for the fact that the anti-Christ can never win: consider - the person(s) who come along to set the record straight on the gospel are EXACTLY the ones to be perceived as anti-Christs, eh what?

A true shoot-'em-up game with no soul ....

Ever hear of a CON game - this must be its Ultimate Definition.

Chemical Weapons and Drug experiments brought

to you by the CIA and DOD Email Print

Most of you that have been reading my work over
the past year know that I am one of the enlisted men that was used in
the program described in this book Forgotten Secrets although the author states the program ran from 1955 thru 1972 Army records show that is was not stopped until 1975.

Yesterday the memories were ripped open again by some book reviews, in
the USA Today paper and some other reviews on the web. Below the jump I
will give the links and some of the quotes.

The author of this book is a retired Army Colonel a pyschiatrist that
worked at Edgewood Arsenal during two seperate time periods early in
the 1960's and again in the late 1960's his name is James Ketchum. I
first heard of the book a few months ago by seeing this webzine article
in 10 Zen Monkeys that led me to have some e mail exchanges with the man.
He does not accept the fact the experiments may have caused any long term

*snip* (V's Comments: there is a wealth of material in this snip. Try to make some time to read it. I have heard that the DOD developed MANY of our current "psychiatric" medicines, and then turned them over to corporations. They sure made a scrambled extinct egg souffle when they did the experiments ...)

The Army refuses to recognize the veterans with their promises of
medals, in Congressional appeals in the past few years it is the Army's
contention that the 7120 men of Edgewood did noting heroic, despite the
promises of the Army from 1955 thru 1975 to decorate the men for
"volunteering".

Like everything else related to these experiments, it all is a lie, ask
a question about the Edgewood experiments one thing you are sure of you
will be lied to, lied about, or made to look crazy. No one can make
this stuff up, life is stranger than fiction.

White Matter Matters in Schizophrenia

New study of effects of two genes on schizophrenia may aid in quicker diagnoses and the development of new therapies

SLOW-GROWING:
Oligodendrocytes in mice with compromised signaling of the growth

Scientists have suspected for more than two decades
that schizophrenia is linked to defects in the brain's white matter.
They could not tell, however, whether changes in the
information-transmitting region of the brain detected by brain scans or
autopsies were the cause or the symptoms of the illness.
A new study not only clarifies the association but also links it to
genes previously tied to the debilitating mental disorder and chemical
changes believed to occur in the schizophrenic brain. "[The report]
provides evidence that alterations in myelin [the lipid layers that
sheath and insulate nerve fibers and are the main constituent of white
matter] can cause defects in neurons and the central nervous system in
general that are related to neuropsychiatric disease," says the study's
senior author Gabriel Corfas, a professor of neurology at Harvard
Medical School's Children's Hospital Boston

*snip* (and this is a long and complicated snip)

Corfas says that the new findings indicate that screening children with
noticeable cognitive and social defects for increased white matter or
changes in its organization could lead to earlier diagnosis of
schizophrenia.
In addition, he says the results indicate that therapies
designed to treat other white matter disorders such as multiple
sclerosis could be useful in treating schizophrenia and other
neuropsychiatric disorders.*

Nuts R Us News and Alternative Views: VIRGINIA TECH MASSACRE

April 24, 2007

The sugar and SSRI

as well as atypical psychotic

defenses

* * *

RIP the shooting victims at Virginia Tech

I have sat around thinking and waiting ... because I have STRONG feelings about those shootings at Virginia Tech and what might befall us in the future.

I find that the mass of people I talk to do NOT want to think that there is anything more to this than a MAD MAN. But there are just too many anomolies AND too many parts of a puzzle as to what makes a mind control victim lose it to just take this as patly as the Mainstream Media has and is playing it. So many many suggestions are made; get students more organized and togethr. Don't get paranoid. Get paranoid. and so on and on and on.

The truth is that there ARE overlapping detalis with previous clump murders in the past. I certainly have seen the videos that contradict each other .. why does he have a shaved head in the videos, but the person shown arrested has PLENTY of hair ..? If you want a full run down of some of this kind of stuff, I refer you to prison planet if you are having problems believing more was at work here than met the eyes.

But back to the junk food defense.

I am not even going to post what has been said, but I am gong to post one comment from the blog which ran that argument, because it is easier for you to see it all in black and white from that source, than me researching and digging to bring all this up on the blog. And many thanks to Suzy.

And since this is non-censored "journalism", I do want to point out to people that each time I took HALDOL, something awful happened. Two bonafide suicide attempts. Complete hallucinatory states. In one case I was stabbed in the thigh with it and the entry point of the needle still has a scab and that part of my leg has been numb ever since. That was five years ago! Was I crazy and HAD to have this drug ...? No, I was given it becuz I questioned AUTHORITY in each case. I am thankful I lived through it all ... and didn't hurt anyone.

Comments
Sugar certainly is something to watch out for. Please consider, as well, the common denominator here: Cho Seung-Hui, the shooter, was on psychiatric drugs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Public Health Advisory of March 22, 2004 identified the side effects of SSRI antidepressants, as: “Anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, akathisia (severe restlessness), and mania (psychosis), have been reported in adult and pediatric patients being treated with antidepressants.” SSRI antidepressants have documented side effects of suicide, mania, psychosis, aggression and hostility. There are numerous incidents to illustrate the point, most are never publicized. Here are the very few which were: Eric Harris, 18, on Luvox, with his friend Dylan Klebold, killed 12 classmates and a teacher at Columbine High School, before taking his own life. The coroner confirmed that toxicology reports showed Luvox in his system. Dylan Klebold's autopsy was never made public. Christopher Pittman, on Zoloft, killed his grandparents. Andrea Yates, on Effexor and Remeron-Effexor, drowned her five small children in the bathtub. Princess Diana, on Prozac, and Dodi Fayed died in the car crash driven by their driver Henri Paul, on Prozac. Chris Farley, on Prozac, had a Prozac-induced heart attack. Mrs. Phil Hartman, on Zoloft, killed her husband. A wrongful death court case was filed and settled by the Zoloft manufacturer. T.J. Soloman, 15, on a mix of antidepressants, shot and wounded 6 classmates. Jim McDougal, on Prozac, Clinton's ex-partner, died of a Prozac-induced heart attack after his dosage was increased to 60 mg in prison. Shawn Cooper, 15, on a mix of antidepressants, fired two shotgun rounds on students and school staff. Kip Kinkel, 15, on Prozac and Ritalin withdrawal, killed his parents and 2 classmates, wounding 22. Jeremy Strahmeyer, on Dexedrine, raped and murdered a 7-year-old girl in a ladies restroom in a Las Vegas casino. Jason Hoffman, 18, on Effexor and Celexa, opened fire at his high school, wounding 5. Elizabeth Bush, on Paxil, responsible for a school shooting in Pennsylvania. Cory Baadesgaard, 16, on Paxil and Effexor, took a rifle to his high school and held 23 classmates and a teacher hostage. Chris Shanahan, on Paxil, killed a woman. Chris Fetters, on Prozac, killed her favorite aunt. Matt Miller, on Prozac, hung himself in his bedroom closet after only 6 days on Zoloft. Seth Privacky, on Wellbutrin, shot his grandfather, parents, brother and brother's girlfriend while celebrating Thanksgiving. Jarred Viktor, on Paxil, stabbed his grandmother 61 times, He took Paxil five days. Jeff Franklin, on Prozac and Ritalin, killed his parents as they came home from work. He used a sledge hammer, hatchet, butcher knife and mechanic's file, then attacked his younger brothers and sister. Sergi Babarin's, on SSRI withdrawal, Salt Lake Family History Library shooting left three dead. Matthew Beck, on Luvox, left five dead and killed himself. Edward Leary, on Prozac, was involved in the New York City Subway bombing. Nick Mansies, on Paxil, was convicted of killing a little boy who was selling cookies door-to-door. Dana Sue Gray, on Paxil, killed several elderly people. Officer Stephen Christian, on Prozac, ran into a police substation shooting at fellow officers and was killed. A wrongful death case was settled by the makers of Prozac. David Rothman, on Prozac, killed two co-workers and himself at the Department of Agriculture in Ingelwood, CA. Williams Evans, on Zoloft, shot a co-worker at Columbus, Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, then himself. Marilyn Lemak, on Zoloft, killed her three children. Christopher Vasquez, on Zoloft, butchered Michael McMorrow in Central Park. Michael Lubrecht, on Effexor, drowned his own child. Paul Marsh, on Paxil, killed his best friend. Megan Hogg, on Prozac, killed her three little girls and attempted suicide. Vera Espinoza, on Prozac, shot her small son and daughter, then herself. Mr. Cunningham, on Prozac, axed his wife and daughter to death. Margaret Kastanis, on Prozac, killed her three children, then stabbed herself to death. Larramie Huntzinger, on Zoloft, ran his car into three young girls, killing two. Mary Hinkelman, on Prozac, shot her two small daughters and her sister before shooting herself. Lisa Fox, on Prozac, shot her small son and her dog before shooting herself. Dr. Debra Green, on Prozac, set her home on fire, killing her children. Lauri Dann, on Anafranil, shot seven children in an elementary school classroom, killing one. Donald Schell, on Paxil, shot his wife, daughter and baby grand-daughter, then himself after taking Paxil two days. In June 2001, the Paxil manufacturer was found guilty of this murder/suicide and ordered to pay $6.4 million. Gloria B., on Prozac, killed her sleeping 17-year-old son with a sledge-hammer before she attempted suicide. Larry Buttz, on Prozac, superintendent of schools, shot his wife, son and daughter, then himself. Michael McDermott shot seven co-workers in Wakefield shortly after his anti-depressant medication was increased. Julie Woodward, on Zoloft, took her own life 7 days after the first tablet. Rebecca Riley, on Seroquel, Depakote, and Clonidine, died at the age of 4. When I was going to school, no one ever imagined violence in schools. Now we are accepting it as part of life. Evil isn't easy to confront. Note from Connie: Wow! Where did you get this very convincing information? Did you see the column by Mike Adams to which I referred, which also cites antidepressants as playing a role in the shootings?

Save internet radio!!

Radio Paradise has joined forces with other webcasters as part of the Save Net Radio coalition. Our goal is to pressure the US Congress to adopt a copyright royalty policy that will allow US-based webcasters like RP to continue operating -- which would not be possible under the royalty fee structure which was dictated by the record industry and recently rubber-stamped by the US Copyright office.

Here's how you can help:

  • Educate yourself. Check out the information on the SaveNetRadio.org website, read Bill's blog post and stay in touch with ongoing developments via Kurt Hanson's newsletter.
  • Sign the online petition and send messages to your members of Congress. This is a new petition and letter campaign. Even if you've already signed a petition or sent an email or letter, please take a few minutes to do it again. Congress needs to get the message loud & clear.
  • Make your voice heard online and in the mainstream media. Let everyone know what a personal loss it would be to you if RP and your other favorite Internet radio stations went away.
  • You can also participate in the discussion about this issue in our Listener Forum and on the Save Our Internet Radio Blog.

Thanks a lot for following through on these suggestions, and stay tuned for other ways you can help.

As of the 23rd of April the Observatoire Volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise, IPGP, Réunion, France reported that the eruption is still in progress in le Grand Brûlé: The trémor remains constant, the intensity of lava flow varies from one day to another. Seismics under the summit are always recorded, the walls of Dolomieu continue to be exhausted.

An important seismicity is always observed with the balance of the summit and a one kilometre depth to the lower part of the sea level. On the other hand no seismics in the area of Tremblet was observed. The magmatic chamber continues to be emptied. The gases "pistons" are in reduction at the summit but appear on the level of the eruption which explains the recrudescence of the noted fountains of lava this morning. Many inhabitants of Tremblet came as neighbours Saturday evening in summit from the slopes which dominate the enclosure of the volcano to be filled with wonder in front of the spectacle of lava flows. Work consisting in arranging a point of view of observation is in the course of security. Consequently, the access to the public remains prohibited.

The massive Piton de la Fournaise basaltic shield volcano on the French island of Réunion in the western Indian Ocean is one of the world's most active volcanoes. Much of its >530,000 year history overlapped with eruptions of the deeply dissected Piton des Neiges shield volcano to the NW. Three calderas formed at about 250,000, 65,000, and less than 5000 years ago by progressive eastward slumping of the volcano. Numerous pyroclastic cones dot the floor of the calderas and their outer flanks. Most historical eruptions have originated from the summit and flanks of Dolomieu, a 400-m-high lava shield that has grown within the youngest caldera, which is 8 km wide and breached to below sea level on the eastern side. More than 150 eruptions, most of which have produced fluid basaltic lava flows, have occurred since the 17th century. Only six eruptions, in 1708, 1774, 1776, 1800, 1977, and 1986, have originated from fissures on the outer flanks of the caldera. The Piton de la Fournaise Volcano Observatory, one of several operated by the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, monitors this very active volcano.

The volcano Piton de la Fournaise is currently at the ORANGE alert level.

The volcano Piton de la Fournaise was successfully forecasted by INTLVRC's programme ERUPTION Pro 10.6 to erupt in 2007 with 100.00% probability.

    ON SLAVERY AND PERFECT COFFEE

PUBLIC RELATIONS History of the Island

Some 800 kilometers off the coast of Madagascar, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, lies one of the world’s most perfect islands: La Réunion. Many of the world’s finest coffees had their origins in the rich volcanic soil of Reunion Island’s mountainsides.

Discovered by Portuguese explorer Tristan da Cunha in 1505, the island has a fascinating (?) history. For centuries, this tropical jewel regularly changed hands between European naval powers.

With its perfect climate and mountainous terrain, the island proved ideally suited for coffee cultivation. Early in the 1700’s, the island became home to flourishing coffee estates. The finest coffee trees were transplanted to Eastern Africa to create the foundations of today’s fine estates in Kenya and Tanzania.

Reunion Island currently flies the FRENCH flag.

Reunion Island from space, via NASA

At one time, the Yemeni held a monopoly on all the coffee beans. These beans are what are referred to as ARABICA beans, as they came directly from Ethiopia, where beans were discovered (supposedly by a shepherd who was curious as to why his goats came home giddy and happy after wandering away. They were ingesting and celebrating caffeine and the delightful taste of coffee.

On 5 August 1665, Etienne Regnault was sent to Bourbon by the Compagnie Française des Indes Orientales, which had a royal monopole on French trade in the Indian Ocean since 1664. Regnault was appointed Governor of Bourbon by Colbert. The twenty men who came with him were the first official colons in Bourbon. In March 1667, a fleet commanded by de Mondevergues called at Bourbon on its way to Fort-Dauphin. Five women were disembarked and Regnault was given Colbert's instructions for colonisation of the island.

A French military squadron, commanded by Lieutenant-General de la Haye, reached the island on 7 April 1671. De la Haye issued on 1 December 1674 a decree prescribing the organisation of the colony. Hunting was forbidden ("because it would made the colons lazy") and every colon had to rear two oxen, 400 poultries and twelve pigs and to grow rice, grains and vegetables. In 1685, the Compagnie Française des Indes Orientales took the control of Bourbon, then settled by 260 colons, and expelled the pirates who overran the coasts of the island.

A Provincial Council was created on 7 March 1711. In 1715, six Moka coffee trees were imported from Yemen. Coffee became the main production of the island and each colon had to grow 100 coffee trees. This cultivation was extremely time and labour consuming, which caused the introduction of slavery on Bourbon.

The regulation from 29 January 1727 stated that the Governor should stay alternatively six months in Ile-de-France (Mauritius) and six months in Bourbon. On 27 December 1730, a decree appointed the first permanent Governor of Bourbon, Dumas. However, Ile-de-France was favoured, especially during the rule of its governor Mahé de la Bourdonnais (1735-1746). Most maritime activity was located on Ile-de-France whereas Bourbon was used for staple food production (read: sugar, tea, coffee ...) *snip*

n 1806, the island was renamed Bonaparte and became a hot spot in the struggle against England for the control of the Indian Ocean. England seized the island in 1810 and introduced the cultivation of sugar cane. Not really interested in the island, England retroceded it to France in 1815. The island was renamed Bourbon during the Restauration. The name of Reunion was reestablished in 1848.

On 20 December 1848, General Commissioner of the Republic Sarda-Garriga proclaimed the abolition of slavery, freeing 62,000. Several Indian workers were imported to replace the former slaves and avoid an economical crisis. The end of the XIXth century was marked by the sugar crisis (1865), a slaughter on 2 December 1868 and a severe economical crisis caused by the opening of the canal of Suez in 1869.

Now, the Piton de la Fournaise is erupting AND there is a very nasty strain of virus going around which has been caught by the high 100,000's.

Reunion Island stands as an example of imperialism, resistance, extreme beauty and political intrigue, the use of chemicals and food production and what is now a real headache for the French!!

Kucinich and the legal grounds for IMPEACHING Cheney ...

I was most disturbed to find the comments posted on the announcement that Kucinich was to pursue impeachment were in the main derogatory. Especially those that called into question the LEGAL grounds for such an action and threw darts at D's honest attempt to try to restore some decency to America. He, Kucinich stands "impeached" and called into question as if this was the ONLY way he could get attnetion. A headline grabber who has no chance of winning.

Invidious attacks on his motives will help no one who is honest. I have noticed, in the main, the male alphas of the so-called left are all over Dennis now that he has "announced" - would that they have the power he has!! He is no wimp, and saying he is does not make him so. Nor is what he is doing to grab headlines .. where are the others in CONgress lining up to stop torture, ensure an Iraq withdrawal deadline is kept, standing against developing the Arctic slope, etc ...?

I went back through my "archives" and came up with this email below. You can see the date for yourself. This, plus TWO very respectable books have shown that there IS a case against Cheney very clearly.

I think that tomorrow, or within days we will know EXACTLY what the legal basis for the action are. It must be so.

Conyers has certainly been in possession of enough damaging evidence to go after Bush, BUT ...

At the time of the email below, we had a republican-controlled CONgress. It would have been VERY awkward to have Bush impeached and then Dick leading the puppet show. In the case of Nixon, Agnew was "relieved" of his "duties" so that he could not stand-in before impeachment against the President (mainly for wiretapping of Elsberg's psychiatrist -- and the revelations in the Pentagon Papers) was pursued. Hence, the Kucinich approach is surely more compelling and certainly more pragmatic at this point in time!! Just he kind of leadership we have been led to expect from him.

And as for Dennis, I think as time goes along, many people (and sheeple) are gonna find that what they are looking for is the Dem from Ohio ... and the team he can create to finally put people above profit$.

Richard Johnson points out that the moral turpitude of impeachment must include a finding that the official benefitted personally from a policy decision that hurt the country. It should be easy enough to prove that Cheney's ties to Halliburton, which has profited enormously from the Iraq war, meet this standard, and Cheney is impeachable.

    Bush's stock holdings:

USATODAY.com - Bush portfolio shows fiscal conservatism

Financial gain by Bush would be harder to prove. However, it might be
possible to show that he benefitted politically from wiretapping political
critics and opponents, as Nixon did. This would require access to some of
the info gained by warrantless wiretapping and email reading. The outing of
Plame makes a much stronger case: retaliation against a truthteller for
    undercutting his lies on Iraq.

    DAN,

This is all very interesting, but there are 2 facts that make
impeachment politically infeasable [sic] at this time: the majority of the
House is held by Republicans; and the vice president is worse.

Moreover, the legal standard for impeachment according to the
constitution is moral turpitude, bribery, and high treason. This
implies there must be a finding the president intended to benefit
personally from his actions, which at the same time contravened the national interest in a material way.

The following message advocates the following as possible
    impeachment grounds:

On the other hand, retaliation against critics of the
administration by means that in themselves are illegal, and violation
of laws regulating spying against US citizens could sui generi be
impeachable offenses if shown they were undertaken for motives of
personal gain instead of overriding national interest.

Report | The Constitution in Crisis
By House Judiciary Committee Minority Staff

    Tuesday 20 December 2005

The Downing Street minutes and deception, manipulation, torture,
retribution, and coverups in the Iraq war.

    Full Report:http://www.truthout.org/3 .122005ConRes.pdf>www.truthout.org/3.122005ConRes.pdf

    Executive Summary

This Minority Report has been produced at the request of
Representative John Conyers, Jr., Ranking Member of the House
Judiciary Committee. He made this request in the wake of the
President's failure to respond to a letter submitted by 122 Members
of Congress and more than 500,000 Americans in July of this year
asking him whether the assertions set forth in the Downing Street
Minutes were accurate. Mr. Conyers asked staff, by year end 2005, to
review the available information concerning possible misconduct by
the Bush Administration in the run up to the Iraq War and
post-invasion statements and actions, and to develop legal
conclusions and make legislative and other recommendations to him.

In brief, we have found that there is substantial evidence the
President, the Vice President and other high ranking members of the
Bush Administration misled Congress and the American people regarding
the decision to go to war with Iraq; misstated and manipulated
    intelligence information regarding the justification for such war;
countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and
other legal violations in Iraq; and permitted inappropriate
retaliation against critics of their Administration.

There is a prima facie case that these actions by the President,
Vice-President and other members of the Bush Administration violated
a number of federal laws, including (1) Committing a Fraud against
the United States; (2) Making False Statements to Congress; (3) The
War Powers Resolution; (4) Misuse of Government Funds; (5) federal
laws and international treaties prohibiting torture and cruel,
inhuman, and degrading treatment; (6) federal laws concerning
retaliating against witnesses and other individuals; and (7) federal
laws and regulations concerning leaking and other misuse of
    intelligence.

While these charges clearly rise to the level of impeachable
misconduct, because the Bush Administration and the
Republican-controlled Congress have blocked the ability of Members to
obtain information directly from the Administration concerning these
matters, more investigatory authority is needed before
recommendations can be made regarding specific Articles of
Impeachment. As a result, we recommend that Congress establish a
select committee with subpoena authority to investigate the
misconduct of the Bush Administration with regard to the Iraq war
detailed in this Report and report to the Committee on the Judiciary
    on possible impeachable offenses.

In addition, we believe the failure of the President, Vice
President and others in the Bush Administration to respond to myriad
requests for information concerning these charges, or to otherwise
account for explain a number of specific misstatements they have made
in the run up to War and other actions warrants, at minimum, the
introduction and Congress' approval of Resolutions of Censure against
Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. Further, we recommend that Ranking Member
Conyers and others consider referring the potential violations of
federal criminal law detailed in this Report to the Department of
Justice for investigation; Congress should pass legislation to limit
government secrecy, enhance oversight of the Executive Branch,
request notification and justification of presidential pardons of
Administration officials, ban abusive treatment of detainees, ban the
use of chemical weapons, and ban the practice of paying foreign media
outlets to publish news stories prepared by or for the Pentagon; and
the House should amend its Rules to permit Ranking Members of
Committees to schedule official Committee hearings and call witnesses
    to investigate Executive Branch misconduct.

The Report rejects the frequent contention by the Bush
Administration that there pre-war conduct has been reviewed and they
have been exonerated. No entity has ever considered whether the
Administration misled Americans about the decision to go to war. The
Senate Intelligence Committee has not yet conducted a review of
pre-war intelligence distortion and manipulation, while the
Silberman-Robb report specifically cautioned that intelligence
manipulation "was not part of our inquiry." There has also not been
any independent inquiry concerning torture and other legal violations
in Iraq; nor has there been an independent review of the pattern of
coverups and political retribution by the Bush Administration against
its critics, other than the very narrow and still ongoing inquiry of
    Special Counsel Fitzgerald.

While the scope of this Report is largely limited to Iraq, it
also holds lessons for our Nation at a time of entrenched one-party
rule and abuse of power in Washington. If the present Administration
is willing to misstate the facts in order to achieve its political
objectives in Iraq, and Congress is unwilling to confront or
challenge their hegemony, many of our cherished democratic principles
    are in jeopardy.

This is true not only with respect to the Iraq War, but also in
regard to other areas of foreign policy, privacy and civil liberties,
and matters of economic and social justice. Indeed as this Report is
being finalized, we have just learned of another potential
significant abuse of executive power by the President, ordering the
National Security Agency to engage in domestic spying and wiretapping
without obtaining court approval in possible violation of the Foreign
    Intelligence Surveillance Act.

It is tragic that our Nation has invaded another sovereign nation
because "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the
policy," as stated in the Downing Street Minutes. It is equally
tragic that the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress have
been unwilling to examine these facts or take action to prevent this
scenario from occurring again. Since they appear unwilling to act, it
is incumbent on individual Members of Congress as well as the
American public to act to protect our constitutional form of
    government.

Health tip found in peoplenomics this morning ...

    Vicks Vaporub

"Supposedly this works 100% of the time although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren't sure why.
To stop nighttime coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime then cover with socks.
Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief.
Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.

I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like accupressure. Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so, I listened.

It was a surprising finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, and in addition, to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

Lolly tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, ( incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough free for hours every night that she used it.

So, if you have Grandchildren, pass it on, if you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect."

    If the Earth
were only a few feet in
diameter, floating a few feet above
a field somewhere, people would come
from everywhere to marvel at it. People would
walk around it marvelling at its big pools of water.
its little pools and the water flowing between the pools.
People would marvel at the very thin layer of gas surrounding
it and the water suspended in the gas. The people would
marvel at all the creatures walking around the surface of the
ball, and at the creatures in the water. The people would declare
it as sacred because it was the only one, and they would protect
it so that it would not hurt. The ball would be the
greatest wonder known, and people would come to
pray to it, to be healed, to gain knowledge, to know
beauty and to wonder how it could be. People
would love it, and defend it with their lives

The God of Unconditional Love (Part 2)

If the world were taught of this God, the world would change. Yet, where are the courageous spiritual leaders who will give up the God of fear to teach about the God of unconditional love?

Could you be one of them? Spiritual leaders do not have to be members of the clergy. Regular, ordinary, everyday people can be spiritual leaders. . . .

. . . the idea now is not to hide out, but to come out, so that others will find the courage to do the same, and all the world may know that it is not alone.

    Earth Day 2007

The pic above (by Ellynore, and a fine pic it is, too)

seems to symbolize EXACTLY how I feel about

    Earth Day this year.

In the past, no one seemed to remember that there were FOUR r's, not three. Reduce, reuse, recycle are great. But RETHINK is so IMPORTANT. We live on ONE planet, with finite resources, but infinite creativity.

For the past coupla weeks, I've asked people to post me their ideas as if they belonged to a think tank that was refashioning the world.

Today, I read Mary Ratcliff's fabulous article in OpEd News

    Her question is ...

So you want to save the planet? What should you consider first ...

and the answer is very forthcoming.

And in line with what I put forward to my OWN question. We need a consortium that does nothing but think about what needs to be done!! And she shows how one such month-long conference lead to so many positive innovations .... I think we need our own think tank!! (with pay, of course! I am SO sick of reading CIA documents about the doom to come from water, drought conditions, terrorists and the like).

Now, Mary has an open thread for discussion at The Left Coaster
which I think you could post your comments on this important question as well as on OpEd. Someone remarked that her article was timely. I think it was beyond timely!! It's the PRIORITY NUMERO UNO. It's up to US becuz with these governments' YOYO mentality (You are On Your Own, as Katrina so poignantly showed us), we are going to have to set the AGENDA.

Funny, but Lenin's first book was "What needs to be done ...?" This is not to say we must have socialist or communist ideology or systemology, but highlights just how important setting an agenda really IS ...

And in that vein, a very exciting event is marked for 17 May.

Read the story. Sign up to stand up. Set up an event in YOUR community. Invite EVERYONE in your address book(s). Send news about this to your media. Get all the men there!

Earthquakes lead to increased volcanic activity

(okay. I did try to fix the link, I really did!!)

Washington, Apr 11 : Scientists using NASA satellite data have found strong evidence that a major earthquake can lead to a nearly immediate increase in regional volcanic activity.

The intensity of two ongoing volcanic eruptions on Indonesia's Java Island increased sharply three days following a powerful, 6.4-magnitude earthquake on the island in May 2006. The increased volcanic activity further persisted for about nine days.

"During this period, we found clear evidence that the earthquake caused both volcanoes to release greater amounts of heat, and lava emission surged to two to three times higher than prior to the tremor," said lead author of the study, Andrew Harris, from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu.

While scientists have long debated whether earthquakes can trigger new volcanic eruptions, this study linked an earthquake to enhanced volcanic activity at two ongoing eruptions that were being closely monitored by satellite-based sensors on a daily basis.

At the time of the earthquake, each volcano was being checked for changes in heat output by satellite sensors as part of a routine global "hot spot" monitoring effort that uses near real-time satellite data from NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites.

Maps of worldwide hot spot activity are created with data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on these satellites, pinpointing locations where surface temperatures are much hotter than their surroundings.

Researchers combined these data with other details about the Indonesian volcanoes gathered by the satellites to analyze temperature and lava output rates at both volcanoes over a 35-day period spanning the earthquake.

They found that the two volcanoes, Merapi and Semeru, which are about 260 kilometres apart and roughly 50 kilometres north and 280 kilometres east of the earthquake epicentre, showed an increase in eruption rate due to underground stresses from the earthquake's seismic waves.

The seismic waves pumped magma -- molten rock beneath the surface -- into the conduit to the surface, increasing eruption rates.

"The responses at Merapi and Semeru lagged about three days behind the triggering earthquake, which may reflect the time it took the change felt by magma residing at deeper levels to be transmitted to the surface," said Harris.

The researchers said that regional earthquake events had sufficient power to modify the intensity of activity at ongoing eruptions, although they may not always be able to trigger new volcanic eruptions.

According to their findings, the Java earthquake had a significant influence on the volcanoes for a relatively short period of several days.

"Eruptions must be closely and continuously monitored in the days immediately before, during and after an earthquake if we are to link any earthquake with enhanced volcanic activity," added Harris.

The research was recently published in the American Geophysical Union's Geophysical Research Letters.

I told you so, doesn't even BEGIN to cover it, that's why I hack away at Big Pharma and Pharmocorporate Culture.

It isn't just that they give people these drugs (including me) BUT the doses are unbelievable. I think that even though people are getting hip, the profits are still going up ... they take more pills EACH.

There are other putrid things about the Virginia Tech murders, massive oddities as in each case. Clump murders. Were their two shooters or one? Why was the shooter's nationality not released immediately? Why do people sell these folks gunz? Why did no one notice this young man's distress? Why did it come on the day Alberto Gonzales was scheduled to testify to CONgress?

As Desi would say, "Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do ..."

However Mike Adams has covered all the bases here, including the most appaling of all ... that 100,000 people die EACH YEAR from Big Pharma (at a minimum).

Are antidepressant drugs an accomplice in the Virginia Tech shootings? (opinion)

The Chicago Tribune reports that Cho Seung Hui, the Virginia Tech shooter who killed 32 fellow students in a shooting rampage, was taking antidepressant drugs. This is not the first time a school shooting rampage has been linked to antidepressants. The infamous Colombine High shootings took place almost exactly eight years ago, and the shooters in that rampage were also -- you guessed it -- taking antidepressant drugs.

What is it about antidepressant drugs that provokes young men to pick up pistols, rifles and shotguns, then violently assault their classmates? Clearly, there's something wrong with the mind of anyone who engages in such violent acts. Could the drugs be "imbalancing" their minds, priming them for violence?

The answer is a very sobering, "Yes, they could be." As we reported in a previous NewsTarget article on Paxil:

Researchers from Cardiff University in Britain and the Cochrane Centre examined data on Paxil -- or its generic form, paroxetine -- from GlaxoSmithKline, legal cases and emails from nearly 1,400 patients who responded to a British TV program on antidepressants. The researchers found that 60 out of 9,219 people taking Paxil -- 0.65 percent -- experienced a "hostility event," compared to 20 out of 6,455 patients taking placebo, or 0.31 percent.

In that same article, published in September, 2006, I stated, "This finding helps explain why school shootings are almost always conducted by children who are taking antidepressants. We also know that SSRIs cause children to disconnect from reality. When you combine that with a propensity for violence, you create a dangerous recipe for school shootings and other adolescent violence."

Sadly, that explanation rings true once again with the Virginia Tech shooting. Wherever we see school violence, antidepressant drugs seem to found at the scene of the crime. The correlation is not coincidence. There is a causal link between the two.

The links between antidepressants and violence are well documented
A study published in the Public Library of Science Medicine (an open source medical journal) explored these same links in detail. (See Antidepressants and Violence: Problems at the Interface of Medicine and Law, by David Healy, Andrew Herxheimer, David B. Menkes)

The authors note that "Some regulators, such as the Canadian regulators, have also referred to risks of treatment-induced activation leading to both self-harm and harm to others" and the "United States labels for all antidepressants as of August 2004 note that 'anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, akathisia (psychomotor restlessness), hypomania, and mania have been reported in adult and pediatric patients being treated with antidepressants for major depressive disorder as well as for other indications, both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric'".

In other words, the link between antidepressants and violence has been known for years by the very people manufacturing, marketing or prescribing the drugs. As the author of the study mentioned above concluded, "The new issues highlighted by these cases need urgent examination jointly by jurists and psychiatrists in all countries where antidepressants are widely used."

That was last year, well before this latest shooting. The warning signs were there, and they've been visible for a long time. Medical authorities can hardly say they are "shocked" by this violent behavior. After all, the same pattern of violence among antidepressant takers has been observed, documented and published in numerous previous cases.

    How to stop the violence
Following this recent episode of violence, some Americans are renewing calls for gun control. But I ask, isn't it time we looked at antidepressants control? Why do we continue to drug up young people in this country with psychotropic drugs that we know are closely associated with violent outbursts?

Giving young men antidepressant drugs is, in my opinion, just like building silent timebombs and waiting around for one to suddenly go off. Chemically assaulting these young, troubled brains with powerful drugs -- while denying them real mental health solutions based on nutrition -- is the bread and butter of modern psychiatry, an industry that in my opinion has sold its soul to drug companies and now serves primarily as a glorified system of legalized drug dealers that preys upon children and teenagers.

That doesn't mean the doctor or psychiatrist who prescribed the antidepressants is directly responsible for the violence committed by Cho Seung Hui, but they may have very well played a key role in destabilizing the mind of a young man who was on the verge of insanity. You don't give another shot of whisky to a drunk driver, and you shouldn't prescribe antidepressants to troubled young men. Especially when there are weapons lying around.

(Click the cartoon for the full-sized version.)
How many more Americans will be killed by pharmaceuticals?
FDA-approved prescription drugs kill 100,000 Americans each year. Sadly, these 32 dead students at Virginia Tech now join the list of those killed by pharmaecutical side effects. And yet nobody in the mainstream media seems to be reporting about the drugs.

Don't you find it curious that when 100,000+ Americans are killed in their homes and beds each year, dying from heart attacks and strokes caused by pharmaceuticals, there's virtually no news coverage, but when mind-altering drugs cause a student to pick up guns and blow away 32 classmates, it's suddenly front-page news everywhere? The reason is because there's violence involved, and violence gets ratings for news organizations.

Another interesting point in all this is that a Korean diplomat contacted the Bush Administration to offer his condolences. Does this seem a bit strange to anyone else? The student was an American citizen, and he had lived in America for many years. In fact, he got put on antidepressant drugs in America, following the same fraudulent system of medicine that is uniquely American in the degree of harm it causes people. If anybody should be picking up the phone and apologizing, it's the U.S. diplomats who should be apologizing to the world for exporting death, disease and western medicine. Drug companies should be apologizing to the families of those who died, as well as to the family of the shooter. And the doctor or psychiatrist who prescribed these drugs to Cho Seung should be apologizing to everybody. Where is the apology from the drug companies who manufacture these chemicals that kill?

The question I'm asking is: Who's really at fault here? Sure, it's primarily the person who pulled the trigger. But it's also the companies and FDA regulators who allowed dangerous, violence-inducing chemicals to be prescribed to the person who pulled the trigger. "Chemically-induced violence," I call it. And antidepressant drugs make it so much easier for the shooter because they make people feel dissociated from reality. One of the Colombine shooters said it was all, "like a video game."

Or, as described in shocking detail in the PLoS Medicine study mentioned above, a 12 year old boy was being drugged with antidepressants when the following took place. As reported: (emphasis added)

The independent forensic report on the case notes CP as saying that that night: "something told me to shoot them". He had initially reported this to be hallucinations and then said he thought it was his own thoughts. When asked to specifically describe what the experience was like, he said it was "like echoes in my head saying 'kill, kill', like someone shouting in a cave". According to the forensic report, "He reported this began happening after he went to bed…He reported he had never considered harming his grandparents before and this was unlike anything he had previously experienced. He reported that the voices were coming from inside his head and they bothered him so much that he got up. He reported that the voices continued until he killed his grandparents. He reported that he couldn't control himself and reported the echoes stopped after he shot his grandparents. He set fire to the house but could not explain these actions saying the thoughts just popped up". He then took a vehicle and began driving but reported that he had no idea where he was going and that it all felt like a dream. He recalled asking the police about his grandparents after he was picked up because he was not sure if it had really happened or not.

My heart goes out to those who died... ALL of them
Yes, I mourn the dead. Do not mistake my skeptical thinking with a lack of compassion for those individuals and families traumatized by this event. But unlike most tabloid reporters, I don't end my story with the 32 dead at Virginia Tech. I mourn the 100,000 Americans killed every year by FDA-approved prescription drugs, and the millions more killed all around the world by pharmaceuticals, regardless of whether they were killed in a headline-grabbing act of extreme violence. And unless we restrict the use of antidepressant drugs and find a way to help young men achieve genuine mental health through nutrition, sunlight, and avoidance of toxic chemicals, mark my words: We will see more antidepressant-induced violence in America.

The shootings will not stop until the pills are banned.

You can bank on it. The next attempted shooting is likely only days or weeks away.

If we want to end this violence, we must end the chemical warfare being waged against the minds of our young men and children by the drug companies.

    Study summary:
Here's the summary of the study, mentioned above, published in PLoS Medicine:

Recent regulatory warnings about adverse behavioural effects of antidepressants in susceptible individuals have raised the profile of these issues with clinicians, patients, and the public. We review available clinical trial data on paroxetine and sertraline and pharmacovigilance studies of paroxetine and fluoxetine, and outline a series of medico-legal cases involving antidepressants and violence.

Both clinical trial and pharmacovigilance data point to possible links between these drugs and violent behaviours. The legal cases outlined returned a variety of verdicts that may in part have stemmed from different judicial processes. Many jurisdictions appear not to have considered the possibility that a prescription drug may induce violence.

The association of antidepressant treatment with aggression and violence reported here calls for more clinical trial and epidemiological data to be made available and for good clinical descriptions of the adverse outcomes of treatment. Legal systems are likely to continue to be faced with cases of violence associated with the use of psychotropic drugs, and it may fall to the courts to demand access to currently unavailable data. The problem is international and calls for an international response.

Support the Health Freedom Protection Act

Imagine how much healthier we would be if, before leaping to purchase synthetic prescription drugs, we turned to foods and natural remedies as the first step toward solving our health problems. A bill has been introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives which would give consumers access to truthful, non-misleading health information; send a letter to support the Health Freedom Protection Act today!

    One more Mike Adams classic!!

    Psychiatry and Big Pharma (comic)

    Why we stay straight

I had promised to do some posting about hallucinagens and why, what, where, who and when ...

And then Blogger started playing up AGAIN. I've now beat the posting system once again.

And now, I found the one statement I was looking for to post FIRST

    And here it is ...

We do these drugs and potions to access some heaven on earth.

    Rob Brezsny says:
Its names are many; dreamtime, fourth dimension, underworlld, astral plane, collective unconsciousness, afterdeath state, eternity, bardo and Hades - to name a few.
    -Pronoia, p. 204
    Then he says:

The problem was that unlike the other techniques on the list, psychedelics bypassed my willpower. Their chemical battering simply smashed through the doors of my perception. No adroitness or craft was involved on my part. One of my meditation teachers referred to drug use, no matter how responsible, as "storming the kingdom of heaven through violence."
    Pronoia, p. 205

So, I will be updating this at odd times, with different stuff.

I think it is an important issue. I think lots of people think the end times are coming. I think lots of people think "the ships" from Arcturus are coming. I think lots of people are not creating a NEW reality here on Earth, because they are lazing but think typing emails into groups is The Answer - and are still putting lethal and VIOLENT drugs into their systems (and that includes abundant amounts of alcohol, the liquid drug).

But if we are to be REAL shamans, visionaries, gateways, portals and multidimensionalists, we need to be listening to our INNER TEACHERS as our leaders, not our drug induced "real"ities.

The Birth of Big Pharma (comic)

Check out this Mike Adams dandy, too!!

The Church of Big Pharma (comic)

Commentary by Mike Adams, the creator of this cartoon:

The FDA has a long history of attacking and suppressing health freedoms (see our article, Tyranny in the USA: The true history of FDA raids on healers, vitamin shops and supplement companies), but did you know the agency might now be threatening religious freedom, too? Under the new CAM Guidelines issued by the FDA (see Health freedom action alert: FDA attempting to regulate supplements, herbs and juices as "drugs"), any items used in altering or enhancing the "function" of a living person are subject to regulation and control by the FDA. Items used in religious practices are NOT excluded from these guidelines.

Holy water, for example, could be regulated as a drug. Churches that continue to use Holy water in their services could be raided and accused of practicing medicine. Sound absurd? The FDA has already conducted an armed raid on one church (see "tyranny" article, above) and made no announcement that churches are exempt from FDA rule.

The crackers and grape juice used in Communion, which are tied to changes in the energy, function or spirituality of the person receiving them, might be regulated as drugs and require a prescription from a doctor. The Elder who annoints a member of the church with oil could be arrested and charged with practicing medicine, and church members who use rosaries to help heal themselves or others could be similarly arrested for using "unapproved medical devices."

Baptism could be regulated as a medical procedure involving "untested, unapproved drugs" (the water). Prayer cloths could also be regulated as "medical devices" and would require FDA approval before being used. In fact, any object, artifact or religious implement used in church services could be subject to FDA regulation and, essentially, regulated out of existence. Prayer wheels, shawls, candles, mandalas, crosses, beads and religious musical instruments could all be confiscated by the FDA as "unapproved medical devices," and anyone who sells such devices could be arrested and imprisoned for doing so.

If this sounds too hard to believe, I certainly understand your skepticism. No sane person would ever think that Holy water, rosaries, prayer oils and cloths could ever be considered drugs and medical devices, but then again, the FDA is not an agency that operates within the boundaries of sanity.

The FDA believes it is above God. Any person who has ever dealt with the FDA will confirm this. The arrogance of the FDA is so extreme that if the agency could find a way to actually regulate God, it would no doubt have done so by now. Because prayer heals people; physically, emotionally and spiritually. It helps people recover from surgery and it calms troubled minds. Prayer is good medicine, and because it is helpful to people and thus competes with conventional medicine, the FDA no doubt hopes to figure out a way to ban it entirely.

    The new FDA CAM Guidelines

Welcome to the new world of FDA tyranny. The FDA recently declared war on natural medicine, and it went way beyond herbs and vitamins in naming things to regulate as drugs or medical devices. The agency is now targeting "energy medicine" and stating that any physical objects used in the practice of energy medicine will be regulated as medical devices. That is, unless the therapy in question is completely useless and has no effect on patients, in which case it will be happily allowed.

The FDA's ultimate game plan? Force everyone to rely on dangerous prescription medications by eliminating the competition. Anything that offers people genuine healing seems slated to be outlawed or regulated out of existence. It's a revenue strategy: Keep the American people sick, outlaw anything that prevents disease, and arrest anyone who dares challenge the system. Even if they are pastors or priests.

It's the new system of medical tyranny, brought to you courtesy of the marketing branch of Big Pharma, also known as the Food and Drug Administration.

These new rules are all part of the FDA's new CAM Guidelines (Complementary and Alternative Medicine). The guide defines a medical device as:

...an instrument, apparatus, implement, machine, contrivance, implant, in vitro reagent, or other similar or related article, including any component, part, or accessory which is... intended to affect the structure or any function of the body of man or other animals, and which does not achieve its primary intended purposes through chemical action within or on the body of man or other animals, and which is not dependent upon being metabolized for the achievement of its primary intended purposes.

In other words, any device that affects the "function" of a human being is now a medical device. So a priest who uses the symbol of Jesus Christ on a cross, for example, to "bless" a member of the church as part of a healing therapy is now practicing medicine with an unapproved medical device, and is subject to arrest and prosecution.

    Skeptics and critics: be warned

Many people are skeptical about all this. They say the FDA would never raid a church and arrest its members. That would normally be a believable position to take, except for the fact that the FDA has already raided a church, arrested its leaders and confiscated its religious tools, claiming they were "medical devices." I've documented this raid in the articles mentioned above. It may not have happened to YOUR church, but if someone else's church isn't safe from the FDA, what's to say that yours is?

The FDA has clearly proven its willingness to smash down the doors of a sacred building, terrorize the members and staff, and confiscate everything it can find in order to disrupt church operations. As a result, all this is not mere conjecture. It is an established pattern of behavior by the FDA. This little-known history of the FDA is documented fact.

Perhaps the FDA will claim it would never again enforce its CAM guidelines in such a manner, but that's not the point. The new guidelines ALLOW the FDA to choose, at its own discretion, to enforce these rules at any time, with no prior notice. One day, prayer implements might be openly tolerated, and the very next day, your church could be raided at gunpoint and have its pastor or priest arrested by federal authorities, dragged away in handcuffs merely for blessing someone with Holy water or sacred oils.

Whether churches are allowed to continue practicing religious freedom is now left up to corrupt FDA "experts" who can decide, on a whim, to outlaw any religious object, liquid or oil by regulating them as drugs or medical devices. In other words, it is now the FDA, not God, that grants permission to conduct religious ceremony in the United States. And the FDA believes it overrides God.

Importantly, the idea of "faith" does not stand up to the FDA's so-called scientific scrutiny. So a church can never prove that Holy water actually works, or that prayer beads have any scientific merit, and therefore the FDA can declare them all to be "unscientific and unapproved" devices, further discrediting them. Faith is not a concept that is understood at the Food and Drug Administration (except, perhaps, faith in Big Pharma and the gullibility of the American consumer).

The FDA now has total control over your life

The FDA, you see, has crept into virtually every area of your life. The agency now controls your foods, beverages, cosmetics, medicines, herbs, functional foods, superfoods, and potentially even your religious practices. The fact that you are allowed to participate in religious services in the church of your choice this coming weekend is only allowed by the grace of the FDA. And if the FDA changes its mind, religious services involving water, oils, symbols, foods or beverages could one day be outlawed, with National Guard troops stationed outside churches all across the country, barring entry into these "crime scenes" where "unapproved medicine" was being used.

Even religious art -- paintings, statues, sculptures and stained glass windows -- could be siezed as "unapproved medical devices" if they are described as having any sort of therapeutic or healing effect on the people who look upon them.

Think it could never happen? You have no idea what the FDA is really capable of. To maintain its control over the people and the entire medical industry, the FDA seems willing to do whatever is necessary, including violating Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, and any other freedom that gets in its way. It will violate federal laws, knowingly engage in fraudulent science, violate basic human ethics and morals, and use intimidation at every opportunity to protect its power over both industry and the public.

The agency has already proven itself willing and capable of engaging in such acts against the American people, and once natural medicine is largely shut down by the FDA, the Church may find itself the next target.

Think about it: With the FDA having declared war on natural medicine and attempting to virtually outlaw naturopathic practices altogether, natural healers will increasingly move into religious practice for protection. You will find more local churches springing up, where "blessed herbs" are given to members as part of a psychospiritual healing practice. The FDA, seeing that these churches are actually healing people with herbs, oils, homeopathy or functional foods, will target the churches and seek to shut them down. And when that happens, there's nothing that will stop this out-of-control federal agency from utterly destroying religious freedom and trapping the U.S. population under a medical monopoly dominated by FDA mafia bosses.

God save us from the FDA.

Because God is the next target. If you believe in religious freedom, then you cannot simultaneously support the FDA.

The Food and Drug Administration is, quite literally, the enemy of freedom (including religious freedom), and giving money to the drug companies by buying prescription medications is much like doing business with the devil. If we continue to support these industries, we will one day wake up and find ourselves imprisoned in a diseased, God-less nation of tyrants who prey upon degenerative disease to shore up their own power and profits.

    Final challenge to the skeptics

For those who still can't believe all this and who think the FDA would never regulate religious items or attack religious freedoms, I have a direct challenge for you:

Show me the law that exempts churches from FDA regulation.

It's that simple. Show me the law. Because the reality of the situation is that you can't. There is no such law. And if one gets passed, then I'm starting my own healing church and handing out superfoods to all the members!

The truth is that there is nothing protecting religious organizations from the FDA. And if you're going to look at this issue with any degree of intellectual honesty, you've got to start with sobering fact. The FDA regulates the Church. And hence, the FDA believes its power supercedes that of God.

My promise: If you can find a law which clearly and openly states that churches are exempted from FDA regulation, I will print it on NewsTarget and issue a correction to this story. But barring any such discovery, I will continue to educate people on why the FDA is so dangerous, not merely to Freedom of Religion, but also to Freedom of Speech, health freedoms and even the freedom to save your own life using the system of medicine of your choice.

The FDA has done more to suppress the freedoms of the American people than any enemy combatant, terrorist group or "axis of evil." The real enemies to a free America are right here at home. It's time we recognized this serious threat and took action to eliminate it through desperately-needed reforms.

End FDA tyranny. Support health freedom.

The media and the pundits spend a lot of time focusing on the massive increase in compensation for top jobs.
But if we really care about strengthening the national economy, it's time to focus on the other side of the story -- what's happening in the low-wage labor market. In a report we've written (with Heather Boushey and Rachel Gragg), "Understanding the Low-Wage Labor Market in the United States," we find that more than 40 million jobs -- about 1 in 3 -- pay low wages.

What they don't want you to know about the coming oil crisis
Soaring fuel prices, rumours of winter power cuts, panic over the gas supply from Russia, abrupt changes to forecasts of crude output... Is something sinister going on? Yes, says former oil man Jeremy Leggett, and it's time to face the fact that the supplies we so depend on are going to run out
    By Jeremy Leggett
    Published: 20 January 2006

A spectre is haunting Europe - the spectre of an acute, civilisation-changing energy crisis. The latest wobble over disruptions to gas supplies from Russia is merely the latest in a series of reminders of how dependent our economies are on growing supplies of oil and gas. On Wednesday, Gazprom's deputy chairman was in London reassuring Britain that there would be no risk of disruption to British gas supplies in the fall-out from the ongoing spat between Russia and Ukraine over pricing. The very next day, temperatures in Moscow broke a 50-year record, plunging to minus 30C. Gas normally exported was diverted to the home front. Supplies to the West fell.
